More Pops Draft Buzz

Chad Ford, who does ESPN Insider, and covers the draft etensively, has listed Pops in his most recent article as a guy who could test the draft waters this off-season in the Chicago Camp, but not actually sign with an agent to return to school. This is his brief scouting report. "Nana (Pops) Mensah-Bonsu, Jr., George Washington University: He's an unbelievable athlete. A highlight reel waiting to happen. However, he's still very raw and will need to bulk up in the pros. He has NBA potential, but he's a reach right now."

Also, Mardy Collins was mentioned as a potential first-round draft choice, who is on the fence about going pro. And Steven Smith was labeled in the same category as Pops, someone could try to use Chicago pre-draft to get into the first round. Ford calls Smith one of the best scorers in the country.

As much as I enjoy seeing Pops, his pro-potential has not been much on display this year. I think Yinka showed more promise than Pops, and Yinka was maybe 5 years away from being ready for the NBA when he left GW. Pops has an awful lot to learn, and the first think is who he can trust as an advisor.

I seriously doubt Pops is considering even testing the draft waters this off-season, however I do think he is going to get serious looks after his senior season. I think he'll continue to improve his rebounding, defense and offensive game, and you just don't find guys as athletically gifted at his height. As they say, you can teach skills, but you can't teach athletism. That alone will get him serious looks. Also, in the NBA he would see a lot less zones, which will make him more effective. If you remember back to the beginning of this season, when he was putting up 20 and 10 in those games, it was when he was facing man defense. He shredded apart Paul Davis, who many feel is a future NBA player. I think one of the reasons now that people feel he has become ineffective on the offense end is because he is facing a zone defense every game, in which every time he touches the ball there are 3 defenders on him. That obviously makes it much harder for him to score. But couldn't you see Pops fitting in perfect in say, the Suns' system? There will be a team looking that likes to run, that will either give Pops a chance with a second round pick, or an undrafted free agent.

Pops is as skilled as Darvin Ham was coming out of college -- and about equally athletic. You could probably say the same about Ben Wallace. Ham hung around for several years, Wallace has blossomed. While he's far from being an NBA contributor, I won't be surprised if a team decides to take as chance on our raw athetlic prodigy.

Pops has no back to the basket game from outside seven feet and absolutely no face-up game. So in order to be drafted he would have to be an absolute lock-down defender. I think Pops has improved tremendously on the defensive side of the ball, but there is no way a team would draft him based upon his current defensive capabilities. Agreed that his best asset is that he is 6'9 and athletic but the college player of recent vintage who he athletically reminds me in his size and athletic ability is Marcus Haislip who was a first round draft pick out of Tennessee. Haislip had a pretty solid face to the basket game and could occasionally step outside and make a three. He has been cut by four teams since his arrival in the league.

pops needs one more year at GW, at least...he's a great raw talent that needs some refining before he attends those workouts, that's just my opinion....he does have great NBA potential...then again, so did Val before he botched that opportunity....

Love Pops, love GW, but I agree with Ziik on this one. Very raw, no discernible offensive moves besides a power dunk, often out of position on defense, does not really dominate in a league with no big centers and really no athletic peer. I'd take Jawad Williams from UNC or something similar before Pops. That UNC squad is scary good, at least 5 NBA type players. Marvin Williams is lottery type talent. I also really like Mardy Collins and think he will be a good, solid pro.

I don't watch the NBA much but I can't see Pops playing at that level with his current game. He is arguably one of the worst offensive players I have seen, his moves to the basket are disasterous, he is the 11th best foul shooter on the team (surprisingly Ricky Lucas is 12th), he has no outside shooting ability-can anyone remember him stepping out and making a mid-range jumper, ever? His very eciting slam dunks become a lot more difficult when the opponents are Shaq or Tim Duncan rather than St. Bonnie or St. Francis PA. (St. Francis is the patron saint of my parish and I happen to know he is very short). He is also prone to foul trouble, makes some dumb plays (the announcer pointed out that he needs to learn to lay the ball in sometimes, and not always go for the dunk) and gets frustrated easily. It probably doesn't sound this way but I love having Pops as part of the program, surely he has unlimited athletic potential, he was the New Jersey state high jump champion in high school, he brings tremendous energy to the team and especially to the home fans, he seems to be a great kid and I remember that he wrote an article in the Hatchet at the beginning of his freshman year saying how much he was looking forward to studying at GW. That outlook always seals the deal for me. I just hope that he doesn't get sweet talked into doing something dumb, like leaving school early. He has a lot to learn about basketball.

I agree with FQ here, the comparison is to a guy like Darvin Hamm who is a crazy athelete and good defender. Pops's offensive skills would be totally irrelvenent to a team interested in him.

Pops may be athletic like Ham and Wallace, but he's not near the defender either one is. But to me, it really comes down to strength. Pops doesn't muscle anyone around on either end. He'll need to if he wants to play at that level.

On a side note though, at the avier game there was a scout from the Bobcats evaluating only three players during the game: Pops, JR and Brian Thorton.

Apparently that scout was also at the UMass game, JR had a much better game then. Hopefully he won't be coming to anymore home games...he's bad luck!

You are all ignoring one of the big reasons NBA teams draft the way they do; Hype.

If we a) get to the NCAAs b) Win c) He has a couple of highlight dunks/blocks, Pops will get as serious a look as any other "name" (vs skill) player.

As a note - Pops was the last player listed under the category for second rounders who might play their way into the first round with a good camp. As a comparison, Steven Smith was the second player listed under that heading. Collins was #15 under the on the fence first round prospects category, ahead of the likes of Shelden Williams, Charlie Villanueva, JR Giddens, Dee Brown, Sean may, Mustafa Shakur, and Paul Davis. Clearly Ford thinks very highly of him and GW better watch out tomorrow. I was really impressed by him when I the Temple/Wake game. Its amazing how he can read plays so well and get steals so frequently.

I think Pops has great potential for us and might have considered this if he matched the hype this year. But at the moment, he seems a long way away from the NBA. Unlike a Ben Wallace, Pops thus far is not a big rebounder for his size. He's not all the dominant college player that Yinka really was. And I hope he sees what happened to Yinka when a sleazy agent, who should wind up in the flames of heck, whispered in his ear that he was ready to turn pro. Pops, stay and make yourself a real NBA prospect and first-round pick with Coach Houston.

I don't think anybody seriously thinks Pops would consider jumping to the NBA after this season. I'm sure the coaches, NBA scouts, and friends would tell him that he needs his senior year to continue to improve before he can go to the NBA. However, I think if he continues to show improvement net season (I have no reason to doubt he won't), then he will get looks as a second round pick, or a late first round pick if he were to significantly improve.

I must be missing something here: EVERY game I watch, the opposing team has a player who basically dominates us and scores about 20-30 points. when does Pops do that? he is skinny and is sure to miss at least one dunk/alley oop a game. plus he is not a very good foul shooter. why would anyone think he can make it in the NBA when Juwan Howard was a bust?

2 words...sir valiant brown. yeah hes benching somewhere in Puerto Rico. Pops needs to have a career year this yr as well as net to have a legitamate shot...but its not impossible. He has the heart and the mindset.

I don't know if I would call Juwaun Howard a bust. Sure, he might not have lived up to some very high epectations, but he has still had a long, successful career in which he has made tons of money and stuck in the league as a starter. The problem was the epectations were always so high for him.

I can't believe this is even up for discussion. NBA scouts are known for falling for athleticism but don't you have to have a semi-polished game to play in the league? Until he learns to avoid silly fouls, play defense with his body (and not simply try to block every shot in sight), and develop a post game that includes both an ability to score as well as an ability to find an open cutter or shooter without turning the ball over, all on a fairly consistent basis, I just don't get this.
