Trim the A-10?

Poster: Colonial Army Captain

I was talking with my fellow Army front-liners at the game last night. We were looking at the Eastern division and how St. Joe's is 9-1 or 10-1 in league play. I couldn't help but think that they're a paper tiger. They get to play UMass twice, Bonaventure twice, Duquense twice, a young Fordham team twice, and URI twice. With that conference schedule, GW could go 10-1, too. This is not to disrespect Fordham because I can see them contending as soon as net year. My friend said to me, "All of the elite conferences don't have too many patsys. We have as many as 6 out of 12 this year and 6 out of 14 net year." He's 100% correct. Our conference RPI suffers because of the dead weight. GW could be in the top 40 RPI if they didn't have to beat LaSalle twice a year. Isn't it crazy that a blowout victory DROPS our RPI? The sentiment I heard was that Linda Bruno should give underachieving squads a 2-year ultimatum to get their RPI in the top 150 or 125, or be booted from the league. I agree with this. Wanted to throw it out there...

Nice thought. Of course if they did this a few years ago, we would now be in the Patriot League.

That's why there's a 2 year ultimatum. We bottomed out a few years ago, but we started to move back up. What has LaSalle done? URI? Duquense? Until last night, I would have said Fordham, but they will be good for the net 4 years. Their frosh are GOOD, and they match up well with us physically.

actually they play duquesne once -- you forgot to mention they play temple twice. and net year the whole east-west thing is dropped.

I don't consider Temple a bottom rung team. They carry our conference RPI and are getting better after some down years. Let's not forget Temple was a #2 seed in 1999 and are coached by a legend (even though he looks like a combination of Skeletor, an owl, and Dom Deloise).

I don't think you can include URI with LaSalle and Duquense in your arguement. The opened a brand new facility three years ago, where in the NIT last year and made the Elite 8 in 1998. They lost their best player this year to injury and would likely be a contender in the East if he hadn't gone down.

The true point here is that we shouldn't be a 14-team league. With the quality additions of Charlotte and St. Louis, we could stand to trim the fat. The specific teams don't necessarily matter, but I proposed a few. Their arena size is inconsequential to me. If you use that argument, St. Joe's, Fordham, and G-Dub would be cut. The bottom line is, the A-10 needs to continue to get better. Leaving some teams by the wayside is a good way to do that.

Your thoughts of cutting teams out of the conference has been talked about for years. But it really is a non-starter. The A-10 is a very laid back conference. No one would try to take this on, GW included. I do think that and Temple have bigger aspirations with their athletic programs and will threaten to jump conferences at some point. Don't be surprised if your post makes a couple of other posters here irate. That's how much people are against trimming the A-10. You can't use the argument that if a team is having a few bad seasons then they should be dropped, b/c one poster after another would tell you that GW should have been dropped under that logic a long time ago. But I agree with the point that are teams in the A-10 that will in all probability never be comptetive programs on the national level. The two I would point to for that are Duquesne and the Bonnies. I think everyone else(Fordham and La Salle included) deserves a chance to get their programs going.

Let them be irate. I'm not one to be happy with the status quo. The status quo is that we can't regularly hope for more than 2 teams in the NCAA's. The status quo means we have to lose quality points by playing bad teams year after year. The status quo means G-Town will get more respect with a worse record and crap out of conference because they are doormats in the Big East. Fact remains: the A-10 could be the 6th best conference in the country (behind ACC, Big East, SEC, Big 12, and Pac 10), but we're stuck with some dead weight that holds our teams back. St. Joe's should have been #1 in the country, but they were hamstrung by their mid-major-ness. If we lose U and Temple, we're prety dead. The A-10 shouldn't be content to be in the top 10. They should strive for more. Isn't that what the ACC did by adding Miami, BC, and VTech? Isn't that why the Big East stole Cinci and Marquette from CUSA? And isn't that why we nabbed Charlotte and St. Louis? If we're going to do this, let's get serious. Otherwise, malaise will set in, and it will do nothing but hurt the conference in the end.

CAC, I've made this argument before as well, but I think most of the facts in your argument are just incorrect. St. Joe's was No. 1 in the country last year, the A-10 does regularly get more than 2 teams in the tourney, Georgetown is not a Big East doormat, and football is the straw that stirs the conference realignment drink not basketball. Net year the A-10 will have eight teams entering the season that have legit NCAA hopes (GW, Temple, Dayton, avier, Charlotte, St. Joe's, Richmond and Fordham), don't get too worked up about one bad season for the league that happens to coincide with one good season for our team. The opposite has been much more common.

We used to be better. We can get better. The teams you listed make this conference great. What doesn't make this conference great? It's the teams that haven't made the tourney in a while. I've been watching A-10 ball for 9 years. Duquense has sucked for 9 years, St. Bonnies had 2-3 decent years, URI was good for a while (under Harrick) but has sucked recently, LaSalle is constantly rebuilding. There's a class issue with the A-10. We have the best and the rest. Problem is, the rest usually stays that way. I know the A-10 will probably have 4 teams in the NCAA net year (my call is Dayton, GW, St. Joes, and Charlotte), but we could be hurt by our mid-major status. I don't want that to happen.

Every league has their doormats....ACC has Florida State and Clemson, Big East has Rutgers and St. Johns, Big Ten has Northwestern and Penn State....I could go on and on with other conferences. Our dead weight teams are bad - don't get me wrong - no ecuses for them. But maybe we should epect more out of our top tier teams. If teams like avier, Temple, GW, Dayton and Richmond would regularly beat top tier teams the RPI issue would take care of itself. But take a look at the conference as a whole - how many wins against ranked out of conference opponents - 3 maybe? This league stinks right now - it is not St Bonnies fault or Duquesnse's fault - eveyone has a hand in this one.

"The status quo means G-Town will get more respect with a worse record and crap out of conference because they are doormats in the Big East." Colonial Army, three points:

1.) While GW has a better record: GU is 16-7 (8-4) and GW is 16-5 (8-3)...I'd say those are pretty similar considering we've played two more games than you.

2.) "Doormats" is a bit of a stretch considering Georgetown is half a game out of THIRD place. Hmm, that's pretty much where GW is in the A-10, isn't it?

3.) "Crap out of conference" well, is it as strong as we'd like? No. But how does it stack up against yours. I see two big mismatches. You played Mich. St. and MD...in their place we played Davidson and Temple. Sure, your opponents are better, but I think the conference schedule more than makes up for that two game difference.
#2 Wake Forrest (R) vs #3 Illinois (H)
#271 Morgan St.(H) vs #263 Citadel (H)
#173 Fairfield (H) vs #216 Penn St. (H)
#312 Mt. Saint Marys (H) vs #311 Howard (H)
#15 Michigan St. (N) vs #57 Davidson (R)
#24 Maryland (N) vs #99 Temple (H)
#167 St. Francis (R) vs #125 Oral Roberts (N)
#266 Towson (H) vs #284 Long Beach St (N)
#207 Florida Intl (R) vs #236 San Jose St. (H)
#71 West Virginia (R) vs #108 Clemson (N)
No one vs #251 Norfolk St. (H)

Again, I agree with your sentiment, but don't lash out at Georgetown, who has for the most part earned their RPI --This Year-- through hard fought road victories in the Big East, rather cast the stones at a team that really deserves your criticism: MARYLAND. Check out their OOC, conference standing and get back to me.

No one is getting kicked out of the Atlantic 10 for anything short of widespread, systemic corruption. The financial costs are not so prohibitive for A-10 sports that teams would drop out of the conference, as Temple did for Big East football. This topic has to just go away already. If you want to root for a team in a "major" conference, there are two within the Beltway that I'm sure would love to have you. Go light some mattresses on fire. (Speaking of which, wouldn't it be great if, before their net home game, UM trotted out Robert Duvall and urged the fans at Comcast Center not to "go to the mattresses" if the Terps win, but then Gary Williams [in the James Caan character] came out and kicked him off the court because he wasn't "a wartime consiglieri?" I don't know how such things come to mind, sometimes.)

As far as where the a10 stacks up agianst others: Over the last few years its been the 8th best conference in the country. The ACC and Big East are clearly the at the top, then SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 10 (rounding out the BCS). The strength at the top of CUSA has put them ahead of the A10, but that will change starting net season. So for the foreseable future the A10 will be 7th (probably as high as 5th as low as 10th depending on the season). The chance of the conference getting to 6th: well it aint zero, but its damn close and jettising the dukes, bonies and whoever isnt going to make a difference. (Try a few billion dollars investment and a BCS bid) Maybe you just overlooked the Big Ten (Which I'd take over the Pac 10 and SEC most years) it's easy to forget that while we were holding on to our win against the spartans the Illini were rolling toward an unbeaten season.

So if we don't play Duquesne in Conference, who do you think we will play non-conference to replace them? North Carolina and Old Dominion? That would help our RPI, and we would be 14-7.

Let's just win 22 games and go dance.

CAC- Could the real problem be that in the one year GW is superior in the A-10, our conference has to be rated 16th? Last year, as St. Josephs played out an amazing season, noone questioned the talent in the A-10. avier shined toward the end and made moves in the tourney. But today, the A-10 is in a different state. None of our perennial powers could win a non-conference game. Temple, St. joes, avier and Richmond were pitiful against other majors. That being said, ill add some fuel to the fire... Humor me and look ahead to net year. We add Charlotte (perhaps the best team in our league net year) St. louis to go along with St. joes, Temple, avier, Dayton, GW, Richmond, UMASS and Fordham. That is 10 teams of 14 that will be competitive. URI did suffer major injury this year. They will be better net year. THe Bonnies will need years to rebuild after the disgrace to their program. Duquesne and LaSalle are below average but trying to improve. where is the problem with this conference beyond this year? It comes down to GW. Ultimately, if we were 16-5 last year at this point, with the A-10 strong, this thread wouldnt have been posted. The A-10 did the right thing by adding 4 quality teams over the past years. That is how we can become stronger.

First of all, this argument has been discussed many times. Second, you say 6 out of 14 teams will be weak net year. That's not the case. Do your homework before you come here. They're all young, they'll all get better. Third, FORDHAM CONTENDING NET YEAR? Get out of here. You're just plain wrong in so many categories.

There's no question our conference RPI is pounding the crap out of our tourney chances. I weep every time I look at the Top 25 or Bracketology and see all the teams with 6 or more losses and fewer quailty wins than us who we're looking up at either in the polls or seeding. Here's my own sample: Maryland (15-7, ranked #22, #6 seed in latest Bracketology), Cincinnati (19-6, #24, #8), Florida (16-6 #5), Georgetown (16-7, #7), Notre Dame (15-7, #9) DePaul (16-6, #7) and my favorite: MEMPHIS (15-10 and a #9 seed). Lunardi's #10 seeds with GW include Stanford (13-9) and UCLA (13-8). Correct me if I'm wrong, but have any of these teams (besides UMd.) posted a single win vs. a top 10 opponent?

This isn't a homework issue. It's an opinion. I didn't use an eclamation point, I used a question mark. I don't epect this to happen, but I could see some benefits if it did. If we were a 12 team league, the west would stay strong (GW, , Dayton, Charlotte, Richmond, and St. Louis), and we would play these teams twice each. Talk about some good in conference play... Listen, I'm not trying to be the answer man. I just thought that with the history of failure from the bottom tier of this division, it may be wise to cut some ties (hey, it rhymes...). Disagree if you want or agree. That's fine. As for noncompetetive teams net season: LaSalle (Steve Smith is gone), Duquense, St. Bonnies, URI (until they prove otherwise), and UMass (until they prove otherwise). So I count 5 teams, supposing Fordham's youth develops well. The A-10 will be strong, but we're held back from true greatness by poorer programs. As a bottom-line kind of guy, I say trim the fat.

"A win vs a top 10 team?"

Neither did GW, but many of the teams you listed have many wins against top 20 teams & top 50 teams.

For eample Georgetown has a lot of quality wins (3 of them on the road):
@ #34 Pitt, @ #16 Villanova, vs #36 Notre Dame, @ #56 Davidson

And only two of their 7 losses are to teams with an RPI above #36 (#99 Temple and #125 Oral Roberts).

This season they are 4-3 on the road -- with all those road games against teams with RPIs in the top #70 ecept one (Rutgers 156).

ArmyCapt: LaSalle's Smith is a junior, but you're right, he may try the NBA. Let's face it, though, as much as it's a good idea, the trend is for megaconferences. Also, conferences dont generally kick anyone out so much as the schools see a benefit in going elsewhere, a decision usually driven by football revenue. That's where the A-10 is hamstrung, I think: Their identity is more a hoops conference than a football conference, so no one is banging down the doors to get in.

I don't think you can say UMass is in bad shape - they have a terrible coach and still posted wins at GW (ahem), against UConn and Florida State. They are 13-9 and 6-5 in conference. They are only 2 games behind the mighty GW which we cry about being under appreciated on the national scale. We are 2-2 against UMass the last three years - I think they are very deserving of staying in the A-10 with us.

Colonial Army Captain: You really don't know much about A-10 basketball if you are including URI in the list of schools (such as LaSalle & Duquesne) that have done nothing for the league. I would venture to guess that URI has better credentials than GW as an A-10 member. URI has been in the A-10 some 25 years. These are some of the highlights of this span: URI as an A-10 Member: NCAA appearances - 5 (88,93,97,98,99) NIT appearances - 6 (81,87,92,96,03,04) A-10 Tournament Championship - 1 (99) NCAA Record 6-5 (two of the losses in OT) NIT Record 6-6 Elite Eight - 1 (98) Sweet Siteen - 1 (88) Twenty Win Seasons - 10 Some of the teams beaten in the postseason as an A-10 member include Kansas, Syracuse, Missouri, Purdue, Boston College, Vanderbilt, and Seton Hall Some of the coaches at URI since it joined the A-10 include Jack Kraft (had earlier taken Villanova to the Final 4), Tom Penders (at URI right before Teas), Al Skinner (now at BC) and Jim Harrick (won NCAA championship at UCLA). All of these coaches along with Claude English and Jim Baron took URI to the postseason. The school is not a one shot wonder under a single coach as you seemed to imply. URI was 4th in average attendance last year for all A-10 members. URI spent 54 million dollars on the construction of the state of the art 7,657 seat on campus Ryan Center which opened in 2002. The building is entirely chairback seats and contains apparel souvenir store, video scoreboards, Alumni Lounge, and luury boes. URI is second all-time in wins of all New England D-1 college basketball programs behind only UConn. The school has a long and proud basketball history. Its longest serving head coach (Frank Keaney) is in the Basketball Hall of Fame as he is is generally credited for inventing the modern fast break. His teams led the nation in scoring for several seasons during the 40's when the team was routinely invited to play at MSG in NYC. It is foolish to include URI in any of your discussions.

Whatever we do, let's never discuss this issue and take into account potential as defined by the size of the home arena. The A-10 is actually sort of a bizarre amalgam of schools thrust together by a variety of circumstances and history. GW gets to stay in the mi because it commits etraordinary resources to its programs (even beyond basketball) and it fills a metropolitan D.C. vacuum. But how do you really balance avier, Dayton, Richmond, UMass, Temple, Charlotte with Duquesne, Fordham, LaSalle, St. Bonaventure? And where the heck does GW fit into all of that? I certainly know where if you just look at seating capacity. But let's not forget that the A-10 is not just a basketball conference. Travel losgistics alone suggest that the confernece should be pared down to something more manageable. But will our lack of a football team, 1-A or 1-AA, relegate us into Tier B? Does our resurrection under Hobbs and our continued ecellence under McKeown make us Tier A? Where's the Shadow when you need him?

No, it is a homework thing. Sure, you may have an opinion, but it is a baseless one. URI and UMass are two of the stronger teams and programs in this league, and one can make a pretty convincing argument for St. Bonaventure being a quality program.

Sure, UMass has stunk it up the last few years and their attendance is lousy, but they were the NUMBER 1 team in the country a decade ago.

URI was a very solid program during the Skinner-Penders-Harrick era. And perhaps you're forgetting, or perhaps you NEVER KNEW, URI was PICKED TO WIN THE EAST THIS YEAR. Take the two best players off most teams for the season and of course they're gonna suck.

St. Bonaventure was a consistent postseason team very recently, and they frequently sell more than our place seats, despite being 2-20.

I would have no problem debating how the A-10 should be 12 or even 10 teams. We debate this 4 times a year here and three more times on the A-10 board (maybe you should check that out first, net time). But instead of making a solid argument, you go off on how Fordham are net year's contenders in the league based on one sloppy game, while at the same time UMass and URI (two teams that in the last 15 years have performed FAR better than GW), should get the ae. You're not a bottom-line kind of guy, you're an idiot.

When I was at G-Dub in the late 1990s the best game each year was versus UMASS. I think everyone in the A10 wanted to be their rivals and because we managed to squeek out a few wins against them we felt pretty tough. I'm all for jettisoning the Bonnies, but the A10 should have done so a few years back when they decided not to play at the end of the season. Give the boot to the net suckiest team (let the leagues AD's vote on it) and the league goes back to a manageable 12 teams with the addition of St. Louis and Charlotte. You can keep the aviers and Temples with a stronger and more consistent from top to bottom basketball league as long as they don't get good football teams and poached by the big boys.

I'm not saying boot them out right now. My point was give all the teams in the league a referrendum: Get your RPI under 150 or show significant progress in the net 2-3 years, or risk "das boot". I'm well aware of UMass and URI's past success. I wasn't trying to say kick teams out now. I pointed out possible candidates based on recent performance. Preseason polls don't mean squat to me. I don't want to debate which teams should go. If you don't agree with me, that's fine. I respect everyone's opinion. It's not like Linda Bruno is going to look at this message board and have some sort of revelation...

We're not kicking anyone out because their team has a four year stretch of not being very good, nor should we. It's mainly cyclical. Even Bona has been to the tournament more recently than G.W. Each of the Atlantic 10 programs has made a committment to academics and athletics, and that is hardly broken by four bad seasons. Barring major wrongdoing, no one is being kicked out. Do you think these programs are trying to field bad teams? La Salle and Bona were decimated by scandal. URI has had perhaps the worst luck with injuries in the country. This Darwinian notion that the Atlantic 10 should be a revolving door, throwing out every SCHOOL (these, after all, are academic institutions, not basketball teams) that hits a down cycle is unfortunately a part of our short-sighted, sports-talk-radio culture, and we'd all be better off if it just went away.

RangW has a point. The A-10 has always been a poor man's conference, geographically sandwiched between the ACC and Big East, taking its great pride in the fact that it's NOT A MID-MAJOR. teams leave it, not the other way around. those that stay may suck; those that leave may suck even worse. i do appreciate the overarching goal of strengthening the conference, and recent additions Richmond, Charlotte and St. Louis accomplish that nicely. so ... addition by subtraction or by addition? The trend is the latter, so I say while we're moving south and west, may as well look at adding teams such as G. Mason, ODU, Kent State, Miami OH and NC-Wilmington. To bolster your city-school cred, you take Manhattan out of the MAAC. And while youre up that way, may as well roll up BU and Vermont, too.
