Who Would You Like To See Next Year

Riding off our current high rankings, maybe we can schedule some decent OOC games net year.

I'll try to stay some what realistic with my list, though I know some of them are impossible, but teams like Mason, ODU, and VCU should be gettable games.

Heres who I've been thinking about:
1. Home and Home vs. George Mason - myabe build a little local rivalry.
2. Any of the top MVC teams - Witchita St, N. Iowa, So. Illinois (would even go on the road for them)
3. One more ACC game besides Maryland or maybe even a Big East team - although I'm certain theres atleast one Big East team that will refuse to play us, that NC State game was sweet on the schedule
4.  Speaking of the Big East, can't Hobbs get a UConn game?
5. Bucknell?  (my dad's an alum)
6.  Western Kentucky
7.  Hofstra, don't laugh they have an RPI of 46 this year
8.  Old Dominion
9.  VCU
10. Manhattan /Iona

Thanks for your insight.

How eactly would playing those teams hurt?
The MVC has 5 teams in the RPI top 50, and another at 51.

The others are all highly ranked as well.

While it would be nice to play an OOC schedule of all big major schools, its not likely, and its even less likely that any of them would ever come play in the Smith Center.  However, we might be able to get some home and homes against those teams that you are so quick to dismiss.

Have fun watching Kennesaw State again.

Learned Hand: We're almost entirely in agreement.  The only difference I see is a West Coast trip.  To build the team's name nationwide, like Gonzaga (our prototype for what we want to be), we need to travel to places that still think we're Georgetown.  How about a Big Ten/Big 12 road game or two every year?  What about a 2 or 3-game trip to UCLA/USC/Stanford/Cal/Gonzaga/Washington/Oregon?  My ideal OOC would be this:

Home - George Mason, Hofstra, MVC Team, Old Dominion, Manhattan/Iona

Road - Big 10 team, Big 12 team, West Coast Team #1, West Coast Team #2, MVC/MAC team

Neutral - Maryland (BB&T)

I know, its etremely ambitious.   However, Temple, St. Joe's, and Gonzaga do it every year, and its our only way of countering any year where the A-10 is not, ahem, up to snuff.  Just think of where we'd be if we went 22-3 with this schedule, rather than 24-1 with our current schedule.  We'd probably be around the same spot in the rankings, maybe a few spots lower, but far higher in the RPI.

It's well worth the investment, especially by epanding the GW brand around the nation to the poor souls who lack the sweet sounds of A-10 TV's fabulous broadcasting teams, and therefore, have yet to see us.

I would like to see us play Georgetown, for the sake of tradition.  I would also like to see routine (if not strictly annual) games with West Virginia and Virginia for the same reasons, as well as Maryland (all three schools are old time GW adversaries).

For the sake of tradition I would like to play American; and I would find time to play George Mason routinely if not every year.

How about scheduling some games against SEC or Conference USA opponents?

I would love it if the Atlantic Ten could dump St. Bonaventure and get Manhatten to replace it as a conference member.

Stetson, BU, Tulsa, Navy, Sam Houston State

We already have Michigan State and Notre Dame for 2006-07. I'd like a two-game series with Mississippi State or South Carolina, for the golfing alums.

Drop Maryland from the BB&T if Gary keeps whining, and bring in UVa. Take a trip on Route 66 to play James Madison.

I could care less about AU, Georgetown, and George Mason. I'd just as soon play Howard as any of the other MEAC schools.

Finally, I'd like a series with Memphis. Re-introduce John Calipari to the Smith Center.

(Of course, I'd like to bring back TP and Houston. But we better make it quick, while they're still on the honeymoon. How many times has TP been married, anyway?)

That's what I would be hoping for, Herve. This would be an attempt to eliminate the myth that the Zags are worthy of considerations over any quality A-10 team and would help us solidify standing with the so-called pundits.

In the past three years, we've scheduled Teas, Gonzaga, NC State, then-#1 Wake Forest and West Virginia. Why is it all of a sudden so difficult? Is it just because we're good now?

2/28/2006 6:13:00 AM
Poster: GdubNC

We might be able to play a top ACC or Big East team if we could schedule it at the MCI Center, kind of like how Temple scheduled against Duke at the Wachovia Center.  Here are my choices:

@ UConn, @ Michigan State, Clemson (for Cheyenne), LSU (for Regis), Gonzaga, Miss. State (for Jeremy), and NC State (MCI Center), Wake Forest (MCI Center), and @ Georgia Tech.

This would have been a perfect year to schedule a rematch against Wake Forest (for the Preseason NIT loss).  They are at the bottom of the ACC but it would have still helped our RPI because they play an ACC schedule.

2/28/2006 6:15:00 AM
Poster: Free Quebec

for what it's worth, Teas, Gonzaga and West Virginia were al part of the BB&T.  Although the goal seems to be to get 2 national teams in again, that is more difficult in large part because we are good now (and in large part because teams don't want to help a charity anymore).

The Wake game was assigned to us by the NIT (and we complained loudly about having to face them in the first round, while other teams like George Mason got cupcake openers).

The only one that was apparently scheduled independently was NC St.

My own wish for the schedule is that we just schedule sufficiently so we aren't subjected to ad nauseum posts all year net year.

2 games against Top 30 RPI teams.  3 games against teams with RPI between 31-100.  2 games against teams with RPI of 101-150.  2 games against teams with RPI between 151-249.  2 games against teams with RPI of 250 or higher.  Realizing that RPI's change from season to season, base it on this year's final RPI.  I don't care who the teams are.  I want to see balance, not 9 of 11 games against opponents with RPI's greater than 200.

Mailvan, FQ, I have had to replace my scroll button three times this season. Of course, I caused a bit with my points on the MCI, so ... BUT, on that topic, I think maybe it is time to look into the MCI for our out of conference matchups. West Virginia would surely continue playing us with a good arena and a chance to get their fans traveling.

I like Law's Idea of the southern schools ... Florida, USC, or Georgia.

Heck, maybe even Kentucky or Kansas or Iowa... all those teams would look at a trip to DC as a W. They all draw really well.

As long as the Smitty is our sole venue, it is tough to get a home and home with anyone of substance other than Gonzaga. Maybe Utah???

Not North Dakota State.

Georgetown, Mason and Maryland should always be on the schedule.  Local rivalry games generate great competiveness and the kind of atmosphere that will get a team ready for conference and post-season play.  Replace Norfolk St and UMES with Howard and American.  If we are going to play these kinds of home games every year, we might as well play schools our fans at least know something about.

Assuming we have Notre Dame (in the BB&T),@Michigan State (fingers crossed) and Marshall,  I'd definitely like to see GU (split $ at the MCI) , GMU and AU.  How about BU, Robert Morris (Colonials) and Stetson (for ziik) in the Red Classic?  FAU to replace FIU and a west coast swing with a Home/Home vs Az State or Pepperdine and finally Towson to appease the inner Calhoun in KH.

Dolphin, in addition to the BB & T, I'd like to see us play 1-2 additional games each season at the soon-to-be named Verizon Center.  These would have to be against Top 30 type competition as any of our conference opponents would fail to attract a large enough gate to make this financially viable.  This would also obviously allow us to schedule home and homes with these schools.

Good lord Mailvan and Dolphin Mike.  How long have you been around here?  And you still think that playing Kansas or North Carolina or even Cincinatti at the MCI Center is a viable option for us?

I agree with Free Quebec that some of these discussions about scheduling go on ad nauseum. Looking over the list of 350 or so Division 1 opponents, though, there are a few schools that would likely jump at the chance to play GW, home and away. In addition to Stetson and Fairfield (I could walk there from my sister's place), there's also Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Idaho State. heck, these latter schools would consider a trip to DC a warm weather treat.

I want GW to take the money from Florida, and go to Deland to play Stetson instead. Chalk it up to a scheduling blip. Then demand that Florida have to agree to a game at Smith before returning them their money. Then have the game scheduled at 2:00, but tell Florida it's a 7:00 tip-off, and watch them take the forfeit. GW has been spun around by Appy State, NCState, and Temple on scheduling changes the past couple of years, and has been forced into the altered BB&T format. Jack Kvanz should have learned a bit of gamesmanship from those changes. When the NCAA tries to come down on GW, JK could give them Dick Cheney's "F**j You!" response. Hell, we're about to discover we're better than Duke. They need us.

FQ, regardless of how long we've been around, if you don't see net year as an opportunity to parlay this year's success, then you're asleep at the wheel.  We have now been a Top 25 ranked program for two consecutive years and will be again net season.  This is eactly the right time to talk to a UNC about playing a home and home (or even a 2 for 1 with our lone home game at MCI/Verizon).  From UNC's standpoint, there is nowhere near the level of shame in losing to GW than there once was, their RPI should not be negatively impacted (maybe slightly but not by a large measure), and you can definitely see ESPN, CBS or ABC televising it meaning the money will be there.  The downside appears to be that we've never done anything like this before, but is that a reason not to try?

Getting a quality opponent into the MCI/Verizon Center isn't as much of a problem as getting an open date for the matchup and paying customers to watch it to make it a viable financial proposition.  A couple of front-runner sellouts in a 5,000 seat gym and 1,000 roadies going to Fordham does not quite assure GW of success in filling Abe's palace. Nothing ventured, nothing lost sounds great until the corollary -- too much ventured, nothing left in the cupboard for the rest of the athletic department -- plays out.  Maybe we can play with house money by advancing far in the NCAA's this year.

10 years ago, during the Yinka/Koul eras, GW was offered games at Duke, Missouri, Michigan State, among others. GW then seemed to have been considered a draw worth seeing, but only on the opponents home court. I think the country will want to see more of GW once we're on national tv, but the finances of the business won't be affected by that. I know we'd like to play the against the top 25 name schools, but I remain convined we're not going to get any kind of equitable scheduling until we've shown the kind of year-to-year consistency as Temple and Gonzaga, and agree to doing more than our fair share of travel as well.

Poog, it clearly has to be against an opponent who: a) has a strong alumni base in the Washington area, b) has a strong national following, or c) both.  This will not work against a conference opponent, I understand that.  And the more I think about it, the more I realize that it would likely need to be a 2 for 1 deal (with GW going on the road twice in echange for one home date) as we are the new kids on this block.  However, Duke/Georgetown is a great eample.  Yes, the Hoyas have had a far greater following than us in the past but this has had to dwindle over the years as their team regressed.  Prior to the Duke game, they were only drawing around 6,000-7,000 fans to their home games.  However, they got Duke to play, CBS televised it and the seats were filled.  I agree that the date could end up being an issue but again, that's no reason not to try.

University of South Florida, one of the new members of the Big East.  I could totally see them taking a home and home and they are a program on the rise (or so I'm told, I don;t know if I believe it - they play in the big east and have an RPI of 238).

Ugggg....South Florida. Are you kidding me? They are the worst kind of team to play. Not only do they have a bad RPI and a losing record (the most important factor in their effect on your RPI) but the style of ball they play is brutal and there is a decent chance they upset you (or at the very least, injure one of your players).

This is not because they are better than you, but they play a VERY physical and VERY slow game that often produces a nailbiter against even the best teams in the country. Don't believe me?

Here's a sample of their Big East games:

They lost to:
WVU by 4
@ Cuse by 6
@ Gtown by 3
@ Seton Hall by 5 in OT
Nova by 3
Seton Hall by 5
@ Louisville by 3
@ Notre Dame by 7

The moral...avoid USF, they are a season killer waiting to happen. Just watch...we'll be their only win in the BE this season when they take us out this weekend and will singlehandedly knock us down to a 10 seed. Mark my words.

Like I said my knowledge of USF is weak at best and based on what my buddy told me (I know, great source)

But what he said is that USF has one of the largest student populations in the country and has started to make a real push in their athletic department.  Thats why they got into the Big East, which makes sense.  Why would the Big East have taken on a sh*tty program when it is already so huge.  (They already have Miami in that TV market).

Looking at what Cambridge said about their losses looks like the might be 1 or 2 players away from swinging that schedule into something successful.  Part of my school of thought about scheduling is establishing a relationship before schools make it big.  That might be stupid, I'm not sure.

Regardless, someone better tell USF to get their asses up to Philadelphia Lutheran before the NCAA shuts it down.
