I decided to start a new thread because I'm too lazy to search for the first one!!
gw alum abroad1/4/2017 4:57:09 PM
And then, apparently, were too lazy to list any games of interest!
I'll start. Tonight Fordham @UR
UMASSholes @ Mason
SLU @ LaSalle
VCU @ Duques
FAMU @ Howard
Arkansas PB @ Central Michigan
Sienna @ Niagra
thomas1/4/2017 4:59:32 PM
Sorry for the mistake, I hit something and it posted before I was finished
MIAMI at Syracuse 7PM - Syracuse has been terrible, they just got dominated at Boston College a few days ago. Before that, they lost at home to St.John's by about 30
South Carolina at GEORGIA 7 on ESPNU
SIENA at Niagara 7
PENN STATE at Michigan 8:30 on Big 10 Network
TEMPLE at SMU 9 on CBS SportsNetwork
OTHER GAMES OF INTEREST:
Villanova at BUTLER 6:30 on FS1 - Savage looks to be at full health and is playing well, but it's going to be hard for him to crack Butler's starting rotation
Rutgers at Michigan State 6:30 on Big 10 Network - SH@# Got Real for Rutgers after starting 11-1 due to a Soft Hobbs-ian OOC schedule. They have now lost 3 straight, including their first 2 conference games where they've scored 47 and 52 points.
Georgia Tech at Duke 7 on ESPN2 - I added this game because of the discussion about Grayson Allen and Coack K. Grayson Allen will not return for this game. It will be interesting to hear what the annoncers say about K's "back issue" and when G.Allen will return. Georgia Tech beat North Carolina by double-digits over the weekend, maybe they can give Duke a game.
luvdagame1/4/2017 7:17:31 PM
@Thomas ESPN says Grayson returns tonight. I may have misread.
thomas1/7/2017 11:59:08 AM
Michigan State at PENN STATE 1PM on ESPN
East Carolina at TEMPLE noon on ESPN3 online
Missouri at GEORGIA 1 on SEC Network
Virginia Tech at FLORIDA STATE 2 on ACC Network
SOUTH FLORIDA at SMU 5 on ESPNNews - the post Orlando Antigua era begins!!! But they are still a 22 point underdog in this game
HARVARD at Dartmouth 7 - I believe Harvard has now won 6 or 7 straight games. Their last loss may have been the home game against GW.
St.Peter's at SIENA 7 on ESPN3 online - Nick Griffin goes up against ML's buddy Jimmy Patsos!!
UAB at Rice 8
BIG TIME A-10 MATCHUPS:
UMASS at VCU 1 on NBC Sportsnetwork
George Mason at St.Bonaventure 5 on NBC Sportstnetwork
OTHER GAMES OF INTEREST:
Butler at Georgetown Noon on Fox(as in your local free TV fox channel, Fox 5 in D.C.) - As soon as Savage announced he was transferring to Butler, I've brought this game up a couple times on here to see who you all would root for and now this game is about to happen!! This has got to be the 'Other Games Of Interest Game of The Year' because Kethan Savage may play a huge role in adding to Georgetown's misery!!! If Georgetown loses this game, they will be off to their worst conference start in school history, and will have lost 13 OF THEIR LAST 14 BIG EAST GAMES!!! The only win coming against then-lowly St.John's. I used the word 'then' because St.John's appears to be a lot better this year.
Boston College at Duke 2 - I'm mentioning this game only to see whether Grayson Allen will behave himself with Coach K out
luvdagame1/7/2017 12:32:23 PM
I am definitely rooting for Butler! I hope Kethan has a great game in front of his family and a hometown crowd.
luvdagame1/7/2017 12:49:51 PM
KS not looking as good so far.
thomas1/7/2017 1:09:08 PM
The last time Savage played on that Verizon Center floor is when Maurice Creek Beat Maryland at the buzzer!!
Yeah, Savage is struggling early on, but Butler is getting good play from their other guards Baldwin and Woodson. Georgetown leads by 1 at the half. It looks like it may come down to the wire, and Georgetown struggles with late game execution.
The announcers mentioned that coming to D.C. for this game was the first time Butler had been on a plane since the terrifying incident they experienced about a week ago when the plane went dark for about 10 minutes and they had to put on oxygen masks. The announcers said the players met with a sports psychologist and cracked jokes with each other to ease their fears of flying again.
bobo1/7/2017 1:13:18 PM
the dude1/7/2017 1:37:59 PM
Butler is better with Kethan at point or former 4 star recruit Tyler Lewis?? No knock on Lewis, I like him as a player but Butler plays better with KS.
I am impresed with Kethan today actually, playing under control making good decisions, passing well, playing solid D. Kethan does two things very well, penetration and on D fights through screens
luvdagame1/7/2017 1:39:20 PM
True concerning Butler's guards Baldwin and Woodson. KS looks like he is getting it started. Butler playing better this half. Thought they were sloppy early on.
luvdagameluvdagame1/7/2017 1:45:42 PM
Love the freshman Baidwin. Great instincts for a freshman.
luvdagame1/7/2017 1:49:33 PM
Not sure Dude. I was impressed with Lewis early on in the season. I need to see a little more to determine who runs the point better. You may have watched more since KS has been back.
luvdagame1/7/2017 1:54:16 PM
I will agree the last two games KS has looked better with Kethan at point rather than Lewis.
the dude1/7/2017 1:57:38 PM
Granted, as I said like Lewis, but check him vs pressure, check him on D. Not that Kethan's perfect with regard to either.
Baldwin should probably emerge by season's end as the primary ball handler!
Some serious home cooking served up for Gtown today from these refs.
the dude1/7/2017 2:05:30 PM
Also, Kelan Martin, talented as he is, reminds me of Carmelo in all the worst ways. Ball stopping, shot machine, apathetic defender. Not exactly the "Butler way"
luvdagame1/7/2017 2:07:17 PM
This is a game! Still plenty time on the clock. They bring in KS as a veteran in late game situations.
luvdagame1/7/2017 2:08:23 PM
Agreed about Lewis under pressure and on D definitely since conference play has started.
long suffering fan1/7/2017 2:08:25 PM
Kethan in the game down the strech of a 2 point game, airballs a short, fall away jumper. Good to see that he hasn't forgotten what he developed at GW in clutch situations.
the dude1/7/2017 2:10:24 PM
Those type of decisions from Kethan! really impressive. He looks like a legit point
luvdagame1/7/2017 2:11:07 PM
Nice play by Butler between KS and Fowler! Game tied 66-66 with 54 sec remaining.
the dude1/7/2017 2:12:08 PM
What the suffering one didn't mention is that Kethan got the ball with 3 seconds on the shot clock in traffic and nowhere to go. Or that he forced a double and found the open man for 3 and the tie on the next possession.
luvdagame1/7/2017 2:12:56 PM
LSF I must confess the same hint went through my mind. Flashbacks of those last second clutch moments. Sorry Kethan.
luvdagame1/7/2017 2:14:16 PM
luvdagame1/7/2017 2:15:54 PM
Who takes the shot for G-town? OT?
long suffering fan1/7/2017 2:16:26 PM
OK, Dude...how about that last play by Savage, dribbling the clock down and throwing up another bad shot that didn't come close. I guess he has improved from his GW days...for us he would have simply turned it over. And that great pass was a perimeter pass to someone standing wide opened at the top of the key. I could have gotten an assist on that one.
the dude1/7/2017 2:18:35 PM
LSF, was it 2 or 3 nights ago that Kethan took over the game against #1 ranked Nova in crunch time? I forget. you seem to have as well.
Luv, the 8-0 Gtown happened with Lewis in and KS on bench, interesting to see who gets the time here in OT. I'd wager KS
long suffering fan1/7/2017 2:18:40 PM
OT. A great game. Wanting Ge**getown to lose but Savage to do bad. If I had to choose between the 2, I would still take a H*ya loss. But certainly no love for a Butler team that bolted the conference then poached 2 of our players.
luvdagame1/7/2017 2:19:07 PM
But the fact that he gave the ball up to the guy on the perimeter after dribble the clock down previously was a plus! Lol
the dude1/7/2017 2:19:42 PM
The last shot I agree, didn't like it. Type of shot he makes but I didn't like it. The prior shot was getting stuck with the ball, needing your team to cut and no one did.
the dude1/7/2017 2:21:27 PM
Who roots against former Colonials? Would you be rooting against PJ for Butler too? Lasan at UCONN?
Kethan gets the OT. lets go KETHAN!
thomas1/7/2017 2:22:18 PM
The Dude, great point about Kelan Martin. I credit the Butler coach for benching him late in the game.
I think both sides are right about Savage, it seems he alternates between making a great play and then a bad play. Butler's coach seems to ride the hot hand when it comes to his guard rotations. It seems as if he's substituting each one on every play.
Georgetown should've have gotten a better shot than that to win the game, LJ Peak taking a contested long 2-pointer couldn't have been what JTIII drew up!! Or maybe it was!! HA!
long suffering fan1/7/2017 2:22:37 PM
You are correct Dude. Admittedly, I look at Kethan with jaundiced eyes, as I generally have an intense dislike for any good player who leaves the program.
luvdagame1/7/2017 2:23:37 PM
Agreed Dude! No doubt it would be KS in OT.
long suffering fan1/7/2017 2:26:21 PM
I rooted against both Lasan and Pellom, but not as much, because I saw the coaching change as a mitigating (but not completely exculpatory) factor. Not sure how I feel about Jorgensen. I was upset about his leaving, but I will also give him some mitigating factors in the way he was used at GW and that I don't think GW's game under ML was suited for him. Kethan just clangs a 3 but then hits 2 free throws. I will say I am impressed that he has been in for so long down the stretch.
the dude1/7/2017 2:26:35 PM
Does that include PJ?
So strange to see him playing that way on Butler, Thomas. Everyone else plays a totally different way and you know the HC has to walk the tight rope with him because they legit need him.
Kethan at his best when he attacks. He was against Nova, big rim attack right there to tie the score, hasn't done enought of it today. That actually does remind me of his GW days.
jae1/7/2017 2:29:07 PM
From what I saw, Kethan was a complete disaster.
long suffering fan1/7/2017 2:29:23 PM
Kethan with the chance to hit the dagger but darn...he clangs a wide opened 3. He really was bad in the clutch vs. GW and that does not seem to have chanbed. Oh, but that dunk in the exhibition game against Bowie State....
the dude1/7/2017 2:31:01 PM
Like you said. Jaundiced eyes. Biased, jaundiced eyes. He's played well, hasn't shot well today
More rim attacks! Back to back big games and its Kethan playing almost entirely down stretch
luvdagame1/7/2017 2:31:06 PM
Really impressed with Fowler as a sophomore. He can go both ways on the post up. Looking forward to seeing the development of our freshmen bigs next year.
thomas1/7/2017 2:32:00 PM
Butler is up by 6 and probably will win, but both teams are making bad decisions in the OT, but Butler has gotten offensive rebounds and hit their free throws. If Savage were playing 25+ minutes, he'd probably be putting up the EXACT same numbers he did at GW during his junior year. Savage had Georgetown's 7-footer Hayes on him twice and instead of driving by him, he shot 2 long jumpers over him and missed them both.
fmc1/7/2017 2:33:18 PM
You forgot to mention 6-6 clutch Free Throws to seal the win.
luvdagame1/7/2017 2:33:50 PM
KS 6-6 from the line.
long suffering fan1/7/2017 2:34:16 PM
Got to love that Ge**getown is about to become 0-4 in conference.
maine colonial1/7/2017 2:38:25 PM
How sweet it is. Kethan Raising High from the line to finish them off!
long suffering fan1/7/2017 2:42:49 PM
So many games of interest....right now Umass vs. VCU (VCU killing them); Michigan State vs. PSU, Virginia Tech vs. Florida State and for me, Creighton (my law school) at Providence. At 3 pm, St. Joes at Fordham and Maryland at Michigan. Snowy day. On the coach with my little dog, with my big dog close by. Life is good.
the sons of liberty1/7/2017 2:50:28 PM
Umass & VCU are playing right now on NBCSN.
(Like LSF mentioned.)
thomas1/7/2017 2:50:34 PM
Georgetown could probably be a top 20 team if they could execute down the stretch of close games, but they are at the point of no return with an 0-4 start in the conference. It looks like the Choke Job loss to Maryland derailed their season!! They haven't recovered from that loss. About Savage, I think we saw a lot of his JR year(2014-2015) play today in which his good plays and bad plays were about even. But he did go 6 for 6 from the line today which helped put the Hoyas away.
The Virginia Tech-Florida State game is on WDCA 20 for those of you in the D.C. area.
Michigan plays at Maryland on the Big 10 Network at 3 for those of you who want to see how Maryland rebounds from a Choke Job home loss to Nebraska last weekend.
thomas1/7/2017 2:52:16 PM
Correction... Maryand is playing at Michigan. They could be in the midst of a downward spiral, I don't like their chances at Michigan.
fmc1/7/2017 2:53:30 PM
Thought Savage did everything well today outside of his range shooting.
the dude1/7/2017 2:56:00 PM
The talent is there at Gtown to be a pretty good team. I'm no JT3 hater but this year they are getting very little out of a talented enough team.
the dude1/7/2017 2:57:07 PM
LSF, now if we could only get you to root for former Colonials!
Speaking of getting less with more this year, Michigan St!
luvdagame1/7/2017 2:57:26 PM
FSU really impressive this year.
maine colonial1/7/2017 3:02:32 PM
UMass could have the skinniest A10 team ever.
thomas1/7/2017 3:11:57 PM
The Maryland-Michigan game is on ESPN2, not the Big 10 Network. But the former long-time GW women's coach(McKoewn) is getting crushed by Maryland's women on Big 10 Network if you want to watch that.
the dude1/7/2017 3:17:22 PM
Thomas/others, does St John's ever win again as a program? Watching Xavier just annihilate them. Why can't St John's win any more? Seems to me the right Coach could make it happen, and I doubt that guy is Chris Mullin.
luvdagame1/7/2017 3:18:18 PM
Can't find the Maryland game on WatchESPN.
thomas1/7/2017 3:27:33 PM
LUVDAGAME, the Maryland game should be up on the ESPN app, but it will be on ESPN2 after the D-II College football championship game ends.
The Dude, St.John's had actually been playing well. I had no idea that Xavier was blowing them out until you brought it up now. I'll tune into FS1 shortly. Mullin seemed to have turned things around this year behind a McDonald's All-American point guard(Ponds) from New York who he convinced to stay home. He's been playing very well. They also have another guard from Chicago in the backcourt along with him who is also very good. During the Georgetown game, I believe they showed St.John's as being 2-1 in the Big East so far, so Mullin has turned things around. I believe he has another big-time player from NY coming in next year too.
luvdagame1/7/2017 3:31:49 PM
Thanks Thomas! Odd I had to use my Firestick to access it but I am on ESPN2 now.
the sons of liberty1/7/2017 4:13:49 PM
St Joe's vs Fordham right now on NBCSN.
ziik1/7/2017 4:15:54 PM
I wonder if Kethan comes here after each game, to check our reviews?
the dude1/7/2017 4:47:45 PM
Hope you're right Thomas, mark me down as a strong skeptic. College recruiting and Coaching is a grind, tough job for a guy who made millions already as an NBA star. Take a look at their OOC results, looks to me like same ol' St Johns team.
What's the track record on legit stars doing well as Coaches? Mixed at best I'd argue.
maine colonial1/7/2017 6:45:48 PM
I'm not Catholic, so I'm not sure, but it sounds like the school on the wrong side of Rock Creek is in either basketball hell or purgatory...Which one is it?
thomas1/7/2017 6:47:52 PM
The Dude, you're right it's probably a mixed bag when it comes to former NBA players(especially guys with virtually no coaching experience like Mullin), but the reason I have hope for Chris Mullin is because he was immediately able to sign Shamorie Ponds, who was one of the top players in New York and one of the top point guards in the country last year. S.Ponds has come in and more than lived up to the hype as a freshman. The success of Ponds should convince other highly touted players from New York to sign with St.John's. S.Ponds is having one of the best seasons for a freshman in St.John's history. St.John's 2nd and 3rd leading scorers are also newcomers to the team this year which may indicate that Mullin has the program heading upward.
On a lighter note, another reason I like watching St.John's is seeing Chris Mullin and Mitch Richmond together again!! I loved watching them play together in Golden State, even though it wasn't for a long period of time. They just need to add Tim Hardaway!!!
the dude1/7/2017 7:22:34 PM
Thomas, we shall see, no one has been able to keep enough of these guys in the Garden for 20 years.
bigfan1/7/2017 7:34:36 PM
Mixed feelings about Kethan.
But if he helped the rapid decline of that other program, great. Generally want the best for GW affiliated players, though his departure was odd.
Don't think, as mentioned before and by others, that he is Mr. Clutch from the field down the stretch, though he usually could hit free throws. We all knew the play at the end of the game and were all cringing and wondering why ML gave him the ball to force something once again.
However, the answer was that he could draw and shoot free throws, so no suprise.
Kethan could do anything he wanted, pre-injury particularly, but tended to get up for big games a lot more.
If his free throws nailed an especially painful loss for the H**as, then that is the biggest last minute bonus ever seen from Kethan. Good job.
thomas1/9/2017 5:38:04 PM
This one is for The Dude(or anyone else who has an interest in St.John's basketball) and/or wants to see what could be a low point for a certain local school:
St.John's at Georgetown 6:30 on Fox Sports 1 - This group of Georgetown players has had a lot of difficulty stopping quick, high-scoring guards and that happens to be St.John's strength as their leading scorers are freshman Shamarie Ponds(a McDonald's All-American) and Marcus Lovett. Another one of their standout players is sophomore Malik Ellison, who is the son of former NBA player and NCAA Final 4 MVP 'Never Nervous' Pervis Ellison.
the dude1/9/2017 6:11:41 PM
Thank you Thomas for the heads up! Didn't realize that was on, I will certainly watch some and be rooting for a blowout of the Hoyas
gw05091/11/2017 9:08:16 PM
UMASS gets their first A-10 win with a strong win vs. Dayton
thomas1/14/2017 12:50:23 PM
Minnesota at PENN STATE right now on ESPNU - Minnesota is actually 15-3 and ranked #24 in the country. I had no idea that Pitino's kid had them playing this well
GEORGIA at Florida now on ESPN2
MIAMI at Pittsburgh
FLORIDA STATE at North Carolina 2:00 on ESPN
Marshall at UAB 2
Houston at UCF 4 on CBS Sportsnetwork
Tulsa at TEMPLE 4 on ESPN News
SOUTH FLORIDA at Memphis 6 on CBS Sportsnetwork
TELEVISED CONFERENCE GAMES:
Dayton at Duquesne now on CBS Sportsnetwork
Richmond at St.Joe's now on NBC Sportsnetwork
St.Louis at George Mason 2:30 on NBC Sportsnetwork
Fordham at St.Bonaventure 4:30 on NBC Sportsnetwork
VCU at Davidson 2 - I'm not seeing a TV network listed, but it seems like a game that will be televised somewhere.
Other Games of Interest:
Xavier at Butler 2 on Fox Sports 1
Duke is playing at Louisville now on ESPN - I'm now including every Duke game only because of Grayson Allen and his dirty tactics
Georgetown is now losing by 8 at home to a depleted UConn team late in the 1st half on Fox. UConn has 3 starters who are out for the year with injuries
the dude1/14/2017 1:51:30 PM
The badly neeed return of Thomas!
Grayson is clutching and whining and grabbing and tripping guys again. Great theater.
luvdagame1/14/2017 4:07:53 PM
interesting Davidson is up on VCU. Gibbs and Aldridge with 29&24 points respectively.
luvdagame1/14/2017 4:09:00 PM
Loving the Xavier vs Butler, FSU vs UNC, and OSU vs KU games!!!
luvdagame1/14/2017 4:19:58 PM
Carolina has pulled away from Florida State they should win this one. No Savage in the final seconds of the Xavier vs BU game. Did he get hurt? KU should beat OSU up by 7 with 20 seconds to go.

luvdagame1/14/2017 4:36:36 PM

the dude1/14/2017 5:08:43 PM
Another solid game from Kethan, rim attacks and finishes, getting to FT. 5th fould was ill advised and he needs to make more 3's.
7 Straight games in double figure scoring.
long suffering fan1/14/2017 10:25:02 PM
3-7 from field for Kethan, no assists, fouls out, may still be sitting on zero offensive rebounds for the season...I guess you and I have different definitions of what constitutes a solid game Dude
the dude1/14/2017 11:01:35 PM
I'll take 10 points against a top ranked team on 7 shots any day
4-4 FT line, 10 points off the bench, played a good point in yet another win against a top 15 team, 3 crucial rim attack lay ups, looked good handling point duties. yeah, solid.
I guess you have taken a 1 day hiatus from bashing Mojo to turn your guns on Kethan, very classy.
high flyer1/14/2017 11:14:45 PM
Did you bother to watch the game Long Suffering Fan? Well, I watched that game, he had a good game. Not flawless but good. Drove well, got fouled a lot made Free throws. He has made 16 straight free throws in his last three games. A key cog on one of the better teams in country.
When is the last time our starting two guard even attempted a free throw?
high flyer1/14/2017 11:46:52 PM
High Flyer...you are correct. I am generally critical of posters who do assessments based upon statistics only, and I am guilty of the same thing. Still...it is hard to put a positive spin on zero assists from a point guard, be it Savage or Sina or anyone else, no? Dude...I like Mojo and part of me says he should be given consideration for a permanent job. My issue is not with Mojo...my issue was with the decision to fire a very experienced and successful coach which left us in the unfortunate circumstances we are in today and indefniitely into the future because he said some bad things to some woefully underperforming players. But I really do like Mojo...he is just, through no fault of his own, in over his head by GW being his first head coaching job. Do you disagree, Dude (not necessarily about the firing of Lonergan but Mojo being in over his head?).
the dude1/15/2017 1:46:33 AM
I'm guessing that's you LSF posting under High Flyer by mistake?
Strongly believe GW had no choice but to fire ML, that the investigation yielded that decision, higly persuaded by those that argue GW would no way otherwise fire a highly successful HC. So yea, that sucks and its going to cost the program.
I do agree Mojo has to do some learning on the fly, I wouldn't knee jerk say he's over his head, just because this his first HC gig, we'll see about that. So far, I'm pleasantly suprised with most of the Coaching decisions, which I think are coming collectively as a staff. When to switch to man, when to go zone, for the most part the playing time allocation, pleased generally with those.
I do see several things Mojo needs to improve on including USE YOUR TIMEOUTS! more direction and energy on the sidelines, agree with Bobo about the latter.
That said, a team's peformance is mostly about the players on the floor. Way too much emphasis on each loss is being placed on Mojo. The players this year are not nearly as good as the players we had last year. Some may be in time, they are not NOW. We had agruably the A10's finest starting 5, good 6th man (Mitola) and a super thin bench, and then graduated 4 of those 6 players. Pleased with the way team has battled
the dude1/15/2017 2:02:12 AM
Few more things, for the team to limit the fall off from last year, which in my view was going to be huge (its well documented I was concerned for some time about this) we HAD to get a lot of the 2 transfers.
1. Sina has played about as well as he's capable, he's just not a PG. We all saw in those first 3 games some of his limitations, hard for him to break a press, no penetration, not really quick enough to play the PG.
2. Steeves many of us, me included just slotted in as a given. Well he's been anything but that.
How could you trade out Kevin Larsen, Pato, Joe Mac, Mitola from a super thin team and otherwise not endure a huge drop off?
Finally, we landed what we thought (I surely did) 2 pretty big time for us recruits in Marfo and Toro. They are averaging 3 and 5 points per game. Toro is already a contributor, Marfo may be in time more of one, but we went from 4 year starters Kevin Larsen and Garino to some impressive but pretty raw Freshmen. Toro is shooting 40% from the Field. 20% from 3. Marfo has about 3 feet of range (has he even attempted a shot from beyond 3 feet yet?) The 3 Freshmen F do not stretch the floor and that is not allowing TC space to operate down low.
Real good chance they will be legit players in time, just a huge drop in players on court, this season from last season, way too much of Mojo as an excuse from certain posters.
long suffering fan1/15/2017 12:06:11 PM
Sorry, all, but that last post by High Flyer was mine. Don't know how the error occured, but I regret any damage to High Flyer's reputation caused by my posting under his name. Now for the Dude. I think you were dancing around my question, so let me ask it directly. Do you think that having Mojo as the coach rather than Lonergan has (1) cost us wins; (2) gained us wins; or (3) not made a difference. Now, for extra credit, do you think that having Mojo as the coach rather than Lonergan has (1) helped player development; (2) hurt player development; or (3) made no significant impact. Okay...one more final question. Do you think that the firing of Lonergan rather than keeping him and his tarnished reputation will (1) turn us into a stronger basketball program over the next few years; (2) weaken the program over the next 5 years; or (3) make no significant difference. Others feel free to chime in, but I am only grading Dude's answer.
thomas1/15/2017 12:16:21 PM
Only 1 A-10 game besides GW today, which is:
UMass at Rhode Island 2:30 on NBC Sportsnetwork - this preceeds the GW-LaSalle game. UMass is coming off a big win at home versus Dayton a few days ago.
Other Game of Interest:
Rutgers at Indiana right now on Big 10 Network - I'm including this game because of Pikell and Hobbs ties to GW and Rutgers Hobbs-ian scheduling that got them to 11-1 early in the year. They have now lost 6 straight games(0-5 in the Big 10) heading into this game in Bloomington

LSF, good questions!! I had to answer a few of them. If GW's permanant coach can bring in strong recruits/transfers in 2017 and 2018 and keep Marfo, Toro and Colin Smith around, I don't think the program will take a nosedive like some seem to think. I'm confident that all 3 of them will be very good players so we can thank ML for signing them. All Mojo or a new coach has to do is recruit backcourt players and shooters to compliment Marfo/Toro/Smith!! Who knows, maybe Justin Mazulla and Maceo Jack are 2 of those guys!! There is also a chance that Sina and Steeves can rebound next year(maybe they'll rebound starting today at LaSalle) and live up to the expectations that a lot of us had for them.
I don't think there would be much of a difference if ML was coaching this team because no amount of X's and O's mastery could make up for Yuta getting injured or Sina and Steeves being injured/average at best!! The last 2 years ML was coaching teams with talented and experienced players, yet they faltered late in the season and lost games to terrible teams which cost them NCAA tourney bids. Given how well the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 GW teams played in the OOC, NCAA tourney bids should've been locks but it didn't happen. ML was unable to "coach up" those players when it counted the most. How was he going to do it with lesser and inexperienced players this year?

Their permanent head coach is making $3 million a year with an extra emphasis on permanent. Home attendance is plunging. Many diehard fans would love to have a new coach. Plus, most of their other sports teams are perennial losers except for soccer, XC/track, sailing, rowing and tennis. On top of everything else, the school recently enacted a new policy prohibiting all athletes from using alcohol as well as drugs and putting in place a random testing program for alcohol use as well as drug use. The athletes are not happy about it.

The big difference is that Dad has pumped massive amounts of money into the Ge**getown program (8 figures worth) and has a new athletic center named after him. I suspect this may have much to do with the son's job security.

Shaka's Texas team is now 7-11. 11 losses already.
What's with Texas, can't win in hoops, can't win in Football. Amazing to see places like TCU and Baylor surpass them in both. Not Just A&M
I believe they signed a top 5 PG today, beating out UK for him, but damn, 7-11 in year 2 of Shaka

Our Temple win looked a LOT better at the time, appears they may be not nearly as good as we might have thought.
For a team that beat Florida St, West VA, and La Salle, they've fallen apart in their last 6.
fredd1/18/2017 9:22:38 PM
Fordham just beat VCU on a last second 3.
thomas1/19/2017 10:30:02 AM
The Dude, Shaka Smart also suspended his leading scorer(Mack) indefinitely, he didn't lift the suspension after after 1 game though, like a certain HOF coach in Durham, NC did with his player!! Mack actually signed with VCU, then followed Shaka to Texas after he took the job. Texas has a very young team, but the problem is, some of those young guys could declare for the draft, even if they aren't projected as 1st round picks. That's a huge issue that Shaka has to deal with at Texas, he never really had to do with players leaving early for the draft at VCU. The worst case scenario for 1-and-done's(and sometimes 2-and-done's) is the player dominates while in school, but the team finishes with a 16-15 type of record and the player leaves for the NBA. It's almost as if you brought in the player for nothing.
About Georgetown, JTIII's record looks pretty good when you look at The Dude's graphic, but I believe Georgetown is something like 2-14 in their last 16 Big East regular season games!!! The only 2 wins have come against St.John's, and when you throw in the 1st round flameouts that several of JTIII's teams have had in the NCAA tournament, a lot of the fan base wants JTIII out!! It's a tough situation because they know JTIII isn't going anywhere as long as JTII is around. The loss to Providence had to be rock bottom for Georgetown because they were blown out(and appeared to have QUIT) against an average to below average Big East team at home. Georgetown is also starting to set records for low attendance in these last few Big East games.
the dude1/20/2017 1:19:34 AM
Thomas, 100x the respect for Shaka I have for Coach HypocryZkewski. However its great to see Texas struggling. Amazing to see them 7-11 with a home loss to Kent St!
Gtown... You have a fan base that's a tad delusional, still thinks its still 1985 and Gtown should be a national title contender. they seem to forgot where the program was before his arrival:

I wonder if Mike Brey, who must have played in that game, has fond memories of playing for Gerry Gimelstob? Brey averaged 5 points a game that season and had 116 assists to go along with 26 steals, 3 blocked shots and 0 dunks. He also fouled out of 4 games.
fredd1/21/2017 1:33:47 PM
Back to the a10. Any of you mguys watch the a10 action this week? I'll you this is easily thr best Fordham team I have ever seen. For us old guys best since the digger phelps team. Aside from thier gurads Sengfelder looks like plenty smart and good enough to beat our butt, I see less than 5 wins, especially if Yuta's out. New coach + lots of new players + weak point guard play = loss of confidence and the ability to get stops.
shofaz11/21/2017 1:50:14 PM
whatever happenned with Mr. NYC prodigy that we were after also? I'm blanking on the name. I know he had a decent freshman year but then some issues with the coach?

Severe. I believe transfered somewhere, saw him somewhere else.
Butler was down 25-5 to DePaul, not a typo. 25-5. Reminds me of our painful blowout loss to them last year. Enter Kethan and the comeback is underway.
Kethan has a right wrist injury which has impacted his range shooting, but just canned a 3. Odds they comeback all the way from 20 down? Probably 50-50.

Fordam beats UMass. by 3 at UMass.
Some pogo stick center for Fordham tips UMass inbound pass to a teammate with about five seconds--and that was it.
So weird to see an energized and happy Fordham team. Like George Mason, not a pushover this year by a longshot.
thomas1/21/2017 6:51:14 PM
Sorry for not posting today's games, but Savage played a huge role in Butler's comeback and 1 point win at DePaul today. He may have led Butler in scoring today with about 20. As bad teams often do against good teams, DePaul made several mental mistakes(2 players by themselves going for a rebound that they knock out of bounds, fouling a player taking a difficult shot late in the shot clock) in the final minute of regulation. DePaul still had a chance to win in OT though. It looks like the perennial bottom-feeders of the A-10(Fordham, Duquesne, George Mason and maybe St.Louis) have all improved this year, even though they may still finish in the bottom 4 of the league. Fordham also has a win over VCU. We still have some games of note tonight:
ST.JOES vs Penn 7
MIAMI at Duke 8 on ESPN - Couple of things to watch for in this game. Miami is an OOC opponent? How good is Duke? And of course...the dirty tactics of Grayson Allen!!!
fredd1/21/2017 9:53:17 PM
Agreed Thomas & Big Fan. If others aren't paying attention and SCREAM how can gw lose to Fordham or Mason? They have not been paying attention. Fordham covers its flaws forcing turnovers and we are peerless at self defending. I love Sengfelder. And Mason is just better. Only Duquesne still sucks

thomas1/22/2017 1:01:34 PM
UCF at Memphis 4 on CBS SportsNetwork
SIENA at Manhattan 2
TELEVISED CONFERENCE GAMES:
St.Louis at Dayton 2 on CBS SportsNetwork - Dayton is a 24 POINT favorite in this game!! That's how bad St.Louis is, but they did win at George Mason about a week ago, which ruined all the good feelings their fans had about George Mason's improvement this year.
LaSalle at VCU 2 on NBC SportsNetwork - both teams are tied for first with a 5-1 conference record. Richmond is also 5-1
George Mason at Richmond 1 - I don't believe this game is being televised anywhere locally or nationally. Maybe it's on the A-10 network
Other Games of Interest:
Georgetown at Xavier 2 on CBS - For almost a year now, Georgetown hasn't been able to beat anyone in the Big East not named DePaul or St.John's(the Fordham, St.Louis and Duquesne of the Big East), we'll see if this streak continues today!!
gw 20121/22/2017 2:45:36 PM
So what has been the issue with Georgetown? Why the big slide the last two years?
bigfan1/22/2017 10:14:49 PM
Personal opinion is that good eventually triumphs over evil, hence their record.
thomas1/22/2017 10:25:13 PM
I'm not sure what the problem with Georgetown is because they have talented players, they should be better than 3-16 or 3-17(2 wins against St.John's and the other against DePaul) in their last 19 or 20 Big East games. Getting swept by a rebuilding Providence team was the ultimate sign that this season is lost and they have some major problems!! Maybe it's their lack of defensive intensity, careless play at the end of close games and lack of a true point guard that has doomed them. Supposedly, they have a big-time, program-changing freshman point guard coming in next year who could fix a lot of their problems.
former colonial1/22/2017 11:09:24 PM
If Georgetown never won again it would be too soon!
the dude1/23/2017 12:55:51 AM
The Big East the way its constructed currently also does no favor to teams looking to pile up wins. Smaller than many other top conferences, with about 50% of the league being top 15 nationally the last few years (4 or 5 of the 9 non Gtowns)
Sort of amazing that teams almost always seem to do better in the Big East (everyone) and worse when they leave it (Pitt, BC, Cuse, Miami etc) Butler Creighton and Xavier have all made the leap up and gotten better.
thomas1/23/2017 10:07:17 PM
I joked about Coach K realizing that this Duke team wasn't very good so he decided to fake another back injury in order to jump off a sinking ship. Well, Duke just lost at home to an average N.C.State team, and it's possible that Duke will not be ranked next week. Ironically, the last time N.C.State won at Duke was in 1995, which was the year that Coach K left the team due to a "back issue" and Duke was terrible. I think we are seeing why Grayson Allen's indefinite suspension was only 1 game. When/If Coach K comes back this year, he's likely going to be coaching an unranked team, when he left Duke was in the top 10!!
About Georgetown, during the game against Xavier yesterday, the announcers mentioned that their RPI is low(around 90) because they were 1-5 in the conference, but their other metric numbers are in the 20's. Georgetown still had a shot at the NCAA tournament if they would have beaten Xavier because they have games against Creighton(twice), Villanova(twice) and Butler, but yesterday's loss dropped them to 1-6 in the Big East, and the way they faded late in the game may indicate that they've given up on this season.
the duke1/23/2017 10:31:02 PM
This Duke team has a lot of talent, including two of the suspected top 5 NBA picks and 5 potential #1s (5 guys on the top 30 NBA draft board via CBS) but the pieces do not fit together that well, no natural point guard, and the two expected top 5 picks are not at all dominant college players.
the dude1/23/2017 10:49:50 PM
Guess I had Duke on the brain. Yikes.
The other standout team is Texas. 7-12, 1-6. The Shaka experiment is not off to a great start in Austin. They are in a close game with 8-10 Oklahoma at home.
invictus1/24/2017 12:21:21 AM
NC State's last six games now include a 51-point loss to UNC, a loss to BC, a 10-point home loss to Georgia Tech...and a win at Duke.
ziik1/24/2017 12:38:10 AM
Thomas, I hope you put your money on NC State. I cut the game off early, and missed the final score.
It's always nice to see them take it on the chin.
the dude1/24/2017 12:48:18 AM
Was watching some of the NC St. game tonight and wondering where Beejay Anya was, now a senior. Dematha and Team Takeover product, listed at 6'9 334 lbs with the longest ever recorded wingspan at 7'9.
Played just 3 mins, minutes are well down this year. Hard to imagine that's better for a player on a mid level ACC team, than to be a star for a good A10 team.
thomas1/24/2017 1:10:21 AM
Ziik, I would've layed the points with Duke in this game if I wagered on this one because N.C.State hadn't been playing well. Duke looked to be in complete control until the final 4 or 5 minutes of the game.
The Dude, Beejay Anya got some decent playing time during his first 3 years at N.C.State, but he's gotten recruited over for this most part during his time there. He would've been a very good player at GW with his bulk and wingspan. He should've transferred to GW after his freshman or sophomore year. Imagine having a presence like him on GW over the last few years!! Lennard Freeman is another local player who GW recruited on NC State. I saw that he is redshirting this year and will play his SR year next season. His game is similar to Armwood's
We always applaud 1-and-done players who don't sign with Duke, Kentucky or Kansas. N.C.State has one of those guys in Dennis Smith Jr., and he totally dominated Duke in this game. He has the greenest of green lights!! When he gets drafted in the lottery of the June NBA draft, they'll be showing a lot of highlights from this win at Duke.
the dude1/24/2017 1:35:30 AM
Thomas, yea, what a difference Beejay would have made. Had some great NCAA tourney games a few years ago, barely plays now. What a waste to have a guy that good playing 3 minutes.
Big kudos to Dennis Smith Jr. Markelle Fulz is another one this year, and like Ben Simmons maybe the best and may miss the NCAA tourne. I wish instead these guys went somewhere where they could help push a team that's close over the top. Fear it might dissuade more be used against them in recruiting.
the mv1/24/2017 9:28:30 AM
Beejay gained 50 pounds this past offseason and it wasn't exactly all muscle. He looks woefully out of shape and McDonough/Bilas commented that the coaching staff was not too thrilled with this development.
I don't believe anyone was saying that the parts of this Duke team did not fit well together when they were 12-1 with wins over URI, Florida and Michigan State and their lone loss being a 2 point loss to Kansas. They are 2-3 since Coach K has taken his leave. Another example of coaching in the college game being so much more meaningful than some here are willing to concede.
the dude1/24/2017 2:27:52 PM
Duke's 2nd loss, got blown out by Va Tech with Coack K, which led to the jokes from Thomas and myself that K was taking a hiatus as he had years earlier with a team he knew was off grade. He coached one last home game against mediocre Ga Tech before opting for surgery as the schedule was about to heat up, hence, the jokes.
They have 1 top 40 win this year, and have not won an away game. (In typical Duke fashon, they did not of course play a single OOC away game.)
the dude1/24/2017 8:15:24 PM
Louisville has a 64-24 lead on the road at Pitt.
Rutgers, Nigel and Pikiell actually hanging with MD on the road.

thomas1/24/2017 8:33:30 PM
I was going to post about the Rutgers-Maryland game if Melo Trimble did not play, but when it was announced that Melo was going to play I assumed that Maryland would win easily. Maryland seems to be pulling away as I write this, but Rutgers hung in there with Maryland for the entire 1st half and early in the 2nd half as The Dude wrote.
Louisville is now up 90-37 with about 8 minutes in the 2nd half!! This game is on ESPNU, I had to turn this on so I could see this slaughter for myself. Louisville is playing this game without one of it's best players in Quentin Snider too. For the last few years, Kevin Stallings underachieved at Vanderbilt, he's even worse at Pittsburgh this year. Pittsburgh actually has 2 outstanding SR players too, they should be way better than this. K.Stallings intentionally got himself ejected too, I guess he was too cowardly to stay around until the final buzzer
the dude1/24/2017 8:38:32 PM

the mv1/25/2017 11:25:06 AM
Duke may have only one top 40 win, but they sure as hell wouldn't be losing home games to mediocre NC State with Coach K running the operation. Two Wolfpack wins in the past 22 years at Cameron..both with Coach K on leave.
fredd1/25/2017 12:41:35 PM
106-51. Holy Shit! Thats 18 3 point field goals to win. If Louisville left the court with 2 minutes to play could Pitt have won shootong only threes? You can say a lot about GW, but we never ran off a coach like Jamie Dixon who created a serious home court advantage at Pitt. Reminds me of Nebraska football when they thought they were bullet proof.
the dude1/25/2017 3:42:12 PM
The thing about Pitt, they've beat UVA, Maryland, Marquette. RPI 49. Puts the blowout into an even more historic perspective.
What was the nature of Dixon's exodus from Pitt?
thomas1/25/2017 4:36:08 PM
The Dude, I think Jamie Dixon just left to coach at TCU, where he played and graduated from. He was in an interesting situation at Pitt because he had them at an elite level(high seed in the NCAA tournament) for several years, but in recent years they've taken a slight dip to a team that makes the NCAA tournament as a 7-10 seed or they go to the NIT...and lose at home to GW!! The fan base expects top 10/high NCAA tournament seed dominance. Maybe it's the move to the ACC that has doomed Pittsburgh, if they were still in the Big East, they'd probably be ranked in the top 20 right now.
Ziik, I know you're joking about Stallings, even though last night's horrific performance may be grounds for a firing after just 1 year, but it raises an interesting question. If GW doesn't retain MoJo, would the best option be to bring in a big-name coach who was fired from a BCS school(like St.Louis did with Travis Ford), an assistant from a BCS school or a coach from a lower level??

OOC Opponents Games:
SMU at UCF 6 on ESPN News - UCF is actually 14-5/ 5-2 in their conference. So they could end up being a good win for GW. SMU is probably the best team in the AAC. They beat Temple at home by 24 earlier in the year.
Memphis at TEMPLE 6 on CBS SportsNetwork
UConn at SOUTH FLORIDA 7:00 on ESPNU
FLORIDA STATE at Georgia Tech 7 - I believe this game is on WDCA 20 locally
