This was a tale of two halves, as GW stared fast, holding Richmond scoreless for the first 3:36 and building a 13-3 lead. Passing and cuts were crisp and shooting was sharp. The Spiders cut the lead to one at 15-14 before Tara Booker nailed two consecutive threes, and the Colonials were up by 30-25 at the half.
Those who thought it wouldn't last were onto something. Richmond came out in a smothering defense that the Colonials were unable to solve after the first four minutes of the half, when they clung to a 40-36 lead. That's when the Spiders ran off 21 unanswered points to go up by 57-40. After a timeout, GW rallied as Booker again hit two threes and the team scored 10 in a row to cut it to 57-50. But GW came no closer as their shooting percentage steadily sank.
Booker's 14 points led the Colonials, but Richmond's 5'7" Brittani Shells poured in 20 of her 30 points in the second half to lead all scorers.
The women play again next Saturday at 5 p.m. against St. Bonaventure, following the men's 2 p.m. game.
