http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/138749

Strengths:
McDonald is a true point guard that has a great understanding of his position. He advance passes on the break and is very unselfish. he makes good decisions and takes great care of the ball on a consistent basis. He is a terrific rebounder for a guard. His nose and desire to gain possession of the ball in awesome. he can make open shots and is capable of scoring big numbers. McDonald is an excellent on ball defender and sets the tone on defense. He is such a capable scorer he could play off the ball as well.

Weaknesses:
McDonald at times should look to be more aggressive especially on the offensive end of the floor. He can be overly unselfish at times to a fault.

Bottom Line:
McDonald is a very complete guard that knows how to play. He does a great job of taking care of and defending the ball. He is a terrific rebounder and very capable scorer when aggressive.

Joe is a great kid. I think he can play but his recruiting has fallen off a bit - not sure why. Did not have as good a summer as he did as a rising junior (when everyone assumed he was heading to a major) and some of the big names backed away even though when I saw him he looked great. But I'm convinced he'd be a good get for GW. His recruiting sems to have taken somewhat of  the same path as Jamal Lewis who ended up at Penn after folks thought he would go much higher. A little note about BC - Joe's former teammate, Danny Rubin, also a Landon grad, plays there and Donahue has an affinity for guys like Joe who are a little under the radar. So I wouldn't count BC out.

My thoughts:

From his end, fair decision. He's thinking he's got a reasonable shot at an offer from an academically respected Big East school with a proven track record that plays an offense that favors guards. GW is willing to wait, to an extent, and now he gets time to see what ML is doing here.

From GW's end, make it clear you're interested (everyone likes to know they're wanted, no?), but don't be the pushy, aggressive guy trying too hard to seal the deal. Even if he doesn't come, maintains a good relationship with some relevant people in the area. Would've liked to see him sign now, but oh well.

BM,

If you aren't one of the golden boy programs, what I most often remember is a good tandem in the back court for those teams that exceed way above pattern. You need to be rock solid in the ball and still present a scoring threat. As we know, we have to have guys who can light it up in high school to be much more confident that they can score at the college level. Savage and McDonald are proving to be scorers when they need to be... for Joe, that's an every game affair.

What we may be seeing is a special class. I am getting, for those older folks, is that Pat Tallent recruiting class feeling. More recently, we have that Hobbs big class feeling. At first, I thought that Lonergan would be satisfied with 3 or 4 quality guys who were a cut above, but now, I think that we may have the staff throw in all the chips on a big class.

If you blend in 4 or 5 guys who holdover, this could be some fun basketball for several years.

More over, what I really appreciate is the local flavor that will grab the attention of local basketball energy. This would make a nice mix with the international flavor--exactly what we had hoped with this coaching staff.  What we do expect is that the players on the team now will work their butts off this season to be part of the next and beyond... or not.

DM, it's nice to even dream of a backcourt comparable to Pat Tallent - Keith Morris, my all-time favorite GW duo. those two really complemented each other and both were multi-dimensional players. those teams should have been invited to a couple NITs but the tournament wanted bigger name schools which to me is a polite way to say we got shafted.

we desparately need someone to replace TT and it's a lot for any freshman to play PG. maybe Savage or another recruiit can do it. the stories suggest Savage  is a real steal.

Pat Tallant was a great player for GW and a winning attitude. He use to coach in the Fairfax Stars program and rumor has it that he use to coach Kethans sister in the AAU program. If this is true what a small world. Maybe some of that Tallant has rubbed off. If Joe McDonald does commit to GW, I think u will see that same chemistry with Savage and him as you've talked about with Tallant and his back court mate.

Of course, FQ, but I think that there are enough folks on this team coming in who are big-time players (IMHO) that we will immediately see an increased level of basketball. We are seeing Mikic spend more time dribbling the ball (or trying). Give that another year and there will be something there. Add to that, Patricio will come in with the ability to handle the ball, so we will start to see secondary break points and it willl be more risky to press GW, taking the pressure off the backcourt. If they do go get Larsen, as well, we will have 2 space eater 4/5's with skills more like a Gonzaga than a Loyola wannabe. We would be, with Armwood, seeing a rebounder more akin to Mike Hall than we have had in a while. I see Pellom improving, but still inconsistant and with a limited offensive game.

As herve says, they aren't points, but they are really good combo guards and two of them coming in at once will help. At some point, Bynes won't be a big liability with either guy next to him and then a good three. I just don't see the constant positioning of Lasan at the 2. Not to rag on Lasan, but in the games that I have seen, his ball handling and distribution was spotty, at best. The kid has to learn to make a bounce pass, as well.

Notta, not as easy a question to answer for a player who may have aspirations to play professional basketball.  There is also the factor of going to school and playing close-to-home which may or may not be a consideration.

Poster: notta hater

MV, that's why it's such a hard question.  We know about Hall, but I recall that Tom McMillen got into Harvard and during a conversation with Lefty, changed his mind to go to Maryland and obviously his life did not suffer due to his choice (maybe even enhanced - he became a local hero and was elected to Congress from Maryland and had incredible business contacts from Maryland).

1/17/2012 3:22:10 PM
Poster: lowpost

also obviously a cost issue.  ivies don't give athletic scholarships.  yes, they put together a financial package, but it may not cover the whole thing and it might include loans.  gw is a free ride.

and the ivy b-ball schedule is gruesome.  playing every friday and saturday night with sometimes long bus rides in between when on the road.  not the same as going out the day before, having a shoot around, staying in nice places.  kathy orton wrote a very good book on what it's like to play b-ball in the ivy league.

finally, the press coverage.  if gw cracks the top 25, the wapo will cover the team.  if princeton cracks the top 25, the only paper that might care is the new brunswick home news, and they will still give rutgers more ink.

Best class in 18 years?  Let's see them on the court first.

I hope McDonald comes -- and maybe him, Savage, Garino, Maragkos (and maybe others) will be special, too. But Elliott/Pinnock/Lucas are a tough standard to reach, ditto obviously Hall/Pops/Omar/Kireev was too.  I think Shawnta and Yegor were another class (though Shawnta was technically 2nd semester) so if you count them (with whoever else was in that class), that's an all-time great.

Let's hope he signs -- there's a lot to be said for playing for a coach who wants you badly, and a team that needs you badly.

P. Tallent, Burwell, Morris, Harper, Shanta, Riddile. Injuries kept these guys from playing at the same time during their 3 years of varsity eligibility in Foggy Bottom but undergraduate memories still make them the best single recruiting class I've seen at GW. Anticipation is always overblown but if ML can land the additional players he is apparently still recruiting, this incoming class next year could well be remembered in the same terms as the aforementioned Tallent class and the more recent Pops/Hall haul.

McDonald needs to hit the weight room.

Just spoke to a big basketball guy who's seen McDonald play a number of times including last weekend vs St Albans.  He was extremely impressed and said that it seems like the game is going in slow motion for McDonald while the rest of the players are running around frantically.  He's always thinking a few passes ahead and has a massive burst of speed when he decides to go to the basket.  Said he doesn't look that athletically impressive at first glance, but then pulls off plays where the whole crowd is thinking "where did he come from".

The player he compared him to was Brandon Roy & said he has pro potential.

Carry on.

BM, I think Joe will be a really good player for us. But how about he suits up for his first A-10 game before we starting labelling him as the next Brandon Roy or having pro potential? I know you didn't say it and were only repeating what a "big basketball guy" said but that's really out there right now. The IAC is not the A-10 and certainly not the NBA. Let's let Joe be Joe College before putting that kind of label on him. If he is as good as the "big basketball guy" says then it won't be an issue.

I think it's pretty clear to anyone who frequents the board (or any sports board for that matter) that McDonald will not be the next Brandon Roy and the chance of him being an NBA player are slim to none.  I've seen him myslef a couple of times and never noted Matrix-like moves.  Just gave me a rush and thought I'd pass it on.

Joe is a good player and a winner. He certainly makes GW a force to be feared next year. U now have two players that I have seen play a lot and win a lot in Joe and Kethan. They both hate to lose. They will push the ball and get easy baskets next year and take his defender of the dribble with ease. The team will a force in the A10 for those reasons.

Scored 18 in home win.  Next they host Episcopal and Kethan Savage on Friday at 6pm.  Go catch two future colonials if you are in the area.

On another note, I watched the five minute FIOS1 profile piece on him (mentioned in the commitment thread) on the DVR last night.  Highly recomended in general, but also found out that he's been a four year starter at PG for Landon.  They may post the video on Landon's Facebook page at some point.

It should be a good game.  Landon vs EHS is always exciting.  Savage was only about 60% and struggled in the first match.  He seems back to 100%.  McDonald is simply too hard to contain.  If he gets some help from his teammates they might be able to pull it out at home.  If Joe has to score 50% or more of their points (which often he does), he might get 30 but add 1 to the loss column for Landon.

Best of luck to both players.

OK GDubbers, NO picking sides.

Star of the night

Landon’s J oe McDonald turned in a game for the ages Friday, pouring in a school-record 49 points in the Bears’ 83-80 overtime win over No. 6 Episcopal. The 6-foot-1 senior guard, who committed to GW earlier this month, hit the game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation and also had 18 rebounds, five steals and four assists. “I give a lot of credit to my teammates,” McDonald said. “They put me in a position where I didn’t have to work so hard to score.”

OK, in keeping with my half empty philosophy that Poog has accurately labeled me with, I can't help but point out that my excitement of 49 points by McDonald is somewhat tempered by the fact that he was guarded by Savage.

1/29/2012 4:00:35 PM
Poster: SkyHigh

The fact they went head to head for most of the game was exciting, but 20 of those points came after Savage had fouled out. When it come to head to head they are very equal in ability scoring and defense. The only difference I see is that Savage plays a lot above the rim and McDonald is more of a 3pt threat and penetrator. He's not going to be above the rim, both are however excellent rebounders and scorers. Landon had no answer for Savage, just as Episcopal had no answer for McDonald.

I have been following GW basketball for close to a year now. I have been following Savage and McDonald for a few years now because I am a big AAU basketball fan.

"The fact they went head to head for most of the game was exciting, but 20 of those points came after Savage had fouled out. When it come to head to head they are very equal in ability scoring and defense..." is not completely true. Savage guarded McDonald the entire time until he fouled out. The only true head to head competition that took place, was the few times in return that McDonald guarded Savage. It would have been great to see them truly go head to head like they did in the IAC Championship game last year! With that said, I agree with SkyHigh, they are both excellent scorers and terrific players. GW is lucky to have both of them.

EHS did not play man the entire game.  When Savage fouled out, they were playing zone.  Joe was just "in the zone."  I don't think that Savage's defense was that bad, it was that Joe's offense was that good.  He shot 3's with Savage's hands in his face.  Did not see Joe beat Savage off the dribble, everything he threw up just went in.  Easily shot 80% from the field. Landon put several different defenders on Savage, including Joe.   Savage displayed his much improved mid-range game.  Savage didn't score as much(26pts)  because he had Chappelle (24 pts) to work with. Not having Adala-Moto was huge, Joe is a tough rebounder and would not have had as many offensive rebounds if big guy had played.  Great win for Landon.  Highlights from the game:

@BM...when you are a gym rat like I am and follow both high school and AAU basketball, you become very familar with the refs. Talked to one back in December about McDonald and he spoke very highly of Joe. He joked  how he likes allowing McDonald to get banged up every now and then so that he (McDonald) can get used to how its going to be called at the next level.

Bullis beat Landon to advance to the IAC final vs Georgetown Prep (which upset Episcopal).  Bullis invented a new D for the game...

Sangster was the tip of a defense that Bullis Coach Bruce Kelley called “man and a half.” The intention: shut down Landon All-Met guard Joe McDonald, a George Washington recruit.

“Russel had [McDonald’s jersey No.] 22,” Kelley said. “And everybody else had a two. Everybody had a half of him.”

McDonald still scored 15 points with 10 rebounds and three assists, but Landon couldn’t provide him enough help.

He scored almost 1600 points for his career while also grabbing just over 800 rebounds. And if you think about it, he wasnt the teams focal point of the offense until his junior year (1st Team All Met) .He had to share the ball with the likes of Christian Webster (Harvard) and Danny Rubin (Boston College), who got their fair share of shots before running the show with Darion Atkins (UVA) and completely taking over this year. Im looking forward to big things not just from McDonald, but the whole program in the coming years. , as they could bring the glory back to DC. We know this already, now we just have to get some production so the rest of the country understands as well.

I'll say it now, Joe McDonald will be the best floor general we've had since Carl Elliot, and in my opinion from a leadership standpoint, even better.  His twitterings have shown dedication, a connection to other players and a desire to bring to GW a winning team and culture.  He is actively recruiting his friends/acquaintances (Sidewell guard, Carrera), commenting on the talent of future teammates (Garino) and shown a desire to make GW THE place to play in DC.  A guy like this makes EVERYONE better both in their basketball skill sets and freeing each player to be themselves.   McDonald will carry the leadership load as the point guard should.

On a side note, it is good to see GW on that list with all of those big time programs.  It is interesting that BU has a player on there.  That's a nice accomplishment for a school from a smaller conference.  You have to wonder if they will be an A 10 team at some point in the future.  Call me crazy but I would rather see BU in the conference than George Mason.

Happy to see Joe is a Parade All American. It is a great honor for a high school basketball player.

As Free Quebec indidicates, it is great that Parade reconizes him when others overlooked him and Keithan as well. I was beginning to think that maybe this board overrated our incoming guards. But considering what I have read that both guards appear comparable, this recognition of Joe makes me believe that the board's optimism is correct, although I have seen neither play.

Technically, there are only like 12 Parade All-Americans (I guess that's what they consider their "first team")--it's the piece that runs every year in the actual Parade magazine. But NONE of that should diminish McDonald's accomplisments which are first-rate.

As far as I can tell, this is the first year that Parade is doing the single player list (as opposed to first team, second team, etc.)  Looking back at the selections, it seemed to be a BCS-only list (with a couple of exceptions) until last year when they added a bunch of mid-major commits.   I did a bit of digging to see how these kids have done as freshmen and it ranged from potential star (Jarvis Threat, Delaware) to a couple of complementary players to many scrubs.

It's a bit early to judge their selections, but it didn't give me the impression that some uber-committee impervious to the influence of the recruiting media picked out a bunch of diamonds in the rough.  BTW, as far as I can tell the Parade selection committee has been comprised of a number of high-school and college coaches.

Here's what I can tell you about Joe.  His team, relative to its competition, was good but by no means great.  Joe handled the ball a lot and was the best player on his team....by far.  This means that teams with equal-to-better talent should have been more than capable of shutting Joe down through a constant diet of double and even triple teams.  That said, he had some of his best games against Bullis and Episcopal, the two squads that were a bit better than Landon, including a 49 point, 18 rebound performance against Episcopal.  This young man is a winner and we're all going to be very glad to see him running GW's offense for the next several years.  Congratulations Joe on a well-deserved accomplishment.
