We can go on forever cataloguing Bob Knight's sins: he also shot (a birdgun) at a homeowner who accused him of trespassing on his farmland during a hunt. On the other hand, he supposedly was nice to his Momma (Though he is a well known "women hater.")
I went to an Army basketball game years ago, largely to get a sense as to how the guy coached. My guess is that over the past 40 years, thousands of us doofusses have gone to see Knight's teams play, largely to see how he coaches. But hundreds of thousands have gone to watch Army, then Indiana, then Texas Tech, and they would have gone to those games no matter who was playing the role of "Coach."
Bob Knight is worse than yesterday's news. He's yesterday's Skeezix, or Little Abner, or Dick Tracy. A cartoon character that may once have held your interest, because you were a kid, unsophisticated, immature, unwordly, and uninformed. He does not play to adult audiences any more, though, and he would not draw anybody other than a few more doofuses and yahoos than usual to the Smith Center. We want fans who want to be proud of GW, and proud of its coach, not the occasional oddball who would show up at this stage of his career just to see Bob be Bob.
You want a coach who can recruit today's college players, coach them, and put on a show based on the genuine emotions of the game, Mentzinger is right on. Bring Back Joe Dooley. Assuming, of course, GW can offer him more pay than he's currently earning as an assistant at Kansas.
