Its after exams which are this week, most likely next Tuesday. I've heard from numerous sources its not the Washington assistant, stony brook's pikiell or Jeff Jones.  Its Lonergan or Dooley. Hobbs also is rumored to be headed back to Uconn but that remains to be seen.

 Why would they announce the new coach when a lot of the players will be home already not giving them a chance to meet before the summer session? I'm not doubting your sources but if this is true it's yet another misstep by this athletic department. 

If accurate, I see no big deal to have the team wait around a couple of extra days to meet the new coach.  KH back to UConn also seems to make sense, even though after 10 years as head coach, it would be a bitter pill to have to become an assistant.  

Would Hobbs try to take Copes with him?

DEA- You'd rather distract the students during finals?  So that they can meet a new coach- and process all that comes with it?  I think, if they are waiting- it is a good thing.  Assuming that GW wants its basketball players to be students as well, I see very little reason to distract them now with the thoughts of where they fit into a particular new coach's scheme.

This, also assumes, that the players don't know who is being chosen.  Just because we don't know, doesn't mean the players don't know.

LA Fan- great question!  We heard from many on this board that Copes was coming here because of Hobbs....and that it wasn't really just Houston.  Hobbs wasn't lukcy to have Houston on his staff- Hobbs skillyfully recruited Copes- and Hobbs was the reason copes was coming.  If that is the case, I'd imagine Copes would follow Hobbs...

I'd like to know how many complex decisions in a person's life can be summed up as either/or, black/white, etc.  It is asinine to believe that the sole reason that Copes was coming to GW was to play for Hobbs, as if his relationship with his uncle had nothing to do with it.  Similarly, it is naive to think that Hobbs had no influence on this decision.  And, I don't recall a single post indicating that Erik's reason for signing with GW was 100% one or the other.  In the end, decisions like this simply aren't as cut and dried as some here would portray. 

MV- Many on here said something along the lines of "If it weren't for Hobbs, Copes would not be coming to GW."  Nobody ever said that Hobbs didn't have his foot in the door because of his uncle.  Nobody said it was 100% one or the other- but many said (and certainly implied) that if it weren't for Hobbs, the fact that Houston was the assistant coach here, would not have made the difference.

Nothing is, MV.  Only thing more schizophrenic and glass half-empty than GW fans is Caps fans. 

UConn can recruit some pretty high calibar players.  I know Copes would be quite a get for us but for them he's standard operating procedure so why do we even assume they have a schollie for him?

If Roland is not on the new staff there is zero chance Copes is coming. You can argue all day who recruited him and whether Hobbs made any difference etc. Because Copes and Houston have a relationship, the nephew isn't going to school where his uncle just got fired.

If "many" have said this as you claim Danj, why don't you provide just a few examples.  I'll speak for myself when I say that I frequently pointed out that Hobbs and Erik had fostered a relationship over the past several years and that Erik was very excited to play for Coach Hobbs.  And not once did I ever say that Roland has nothing to do with Erik's plans to play at GW, or that if it weren't for KH, Copes wouldn't be coming to GW.  I'm not saying that you're accusing me of having said it, but I would like to know who has said this since "many" have according to your estimate.

I'm on the MV point of view on Erik.  Everything that I've heard about Erik's involvement with GW points to a multitute of factors that have led to his signing.  In no particular order:

His uncle being here,

Hobbs - he has a LONG relationship with Hobbs - Many years

Really liking the other guys on the team,

Being closer to home (Philly) than a lot of other schools,

His mother being comfortable with, Hobbs, GW, and DC.

If any of those factors aren't working then it might not have worked.

Don't forget that Erik's mom almost certainly has a lot more influence over the situation than does his uncle.  People talk like he is simply a commodity that Roland can just take with him wherever he wants and I think that is incorrect.  Erik and his mom are first and foremost interested in what's best for ERIK - not uncle Roland.  As it should be.

If I offended people or rubbed people the wrong way with my post- I'm sorry.  I just would be interested to see if the development of Copes relationship with Hobbs would lead Copes to follow Hobbs- even if his uncle stayed at GW

Danj, I don't believe you offended anyone but you appeared to make a statement that just wasn't the case.  As for your question, if Roland stayed at GW and KH were to go to say UCONN, I'd put the chances of Erik staying at GW at around 60% (assuming he is academically eligible), going to UCONN at 25%, and going elsewhere at 15%.  This is just an opinion based more on intuition than anything else.

MV- my statement was misplaced.  Never meant to characterize anybody as saying Copes was solely coming for Hobbs.  I do believe (though I can't provide examples) that I read many (i.e. more than 3) people almost seeming to take offense to the notion that Copes was coming here, largely based on the fact that his uncle was the assistant coach--and feeling that Hobbs deserved to be given his due, as well.  That may have just been my perception of other's posts though.

Do half of you even want Copes to come? Seriously, if you like Hobbs or not, you should all want Copes to come - GW doesn't get Top 50 recruits too often.

Chatter from UVM people is that he is a good big man coach, so it would be especially interesting to see what he could do with some national-quality talent.

EVERYBODY on this board wants Copes to come here.  EVERYONE.

Count me as part of the half that doesn'tw ant Copes to come...I mean, having a top 50 recruit that happens to be a big man can't possibly be good for teh program- he can't shoot 3's....and we all know this team needs shooters.  ANybody can see that.

 MV you are wrong on this one. If Houston stays here there is nearly a 100% chance that Copes stays. And if he leaves there's probably a 90% chance that he goes. I know this for sure.

Well in that case, I feel a whole lot better.  Because a new coach would have to have his head examined to take this job, fire Houston and run Copes out of town in the process.  Even with limits on the number of coaches a team can employ, anyone should be able to make this work.
