I would think that Lonergan would be on the prospect list (assuming GW doesn't hire him today).

Wow.  I was so excited about Lonergan, guess I'm going to have to get myself psyched for Dooley -- a guy who clearly has tremendous potential.

That's a cream of the crop job.  I would try and go get the Butler Coach.  Maryland has the resources, it's gotta be a top 20 job in the nation with the facilities and resources they have.

 Steven's re-upped at Butler (and got a big fat national runner-up bonus this year) last year and has a monster buy-out clause. He also has clearly stated he wants to stay at Butler.

I hope Debbie Yow is behind it and not just another DUI.

 Gary Williams also has a relatively new girl whom he calls his "fiance."  He's in for some real changes. He had no advance notice that he was losing his center, and apparently was busted up about that.

Mike Brey, I think, should stay happy as a clam where he is. Why move to a much more fickle fan base?

Al Skinner comes to mind as a short term fill in, at least,  if Lonergan does not make the cut.  And Jimmy Patsos, of course.

Shaka Smart may want to rethink that extension, but it's got to be less frustrating than Maryland.

Wondering about Lonergan for Md. Somehow, think GW might not be the premier open coaching position in the Washington area.

Great news on so many levels

 Herve is right about Stevens and Butler. That guy seems to know exactly what he wants, and College Park, Md, with its vast parking lots, etc., does not seem to be it.

Watch for the following as possible candidates:

Tubby Smith, Jay Wright, Mike Brey, Tommy Amaker, Sean Miller, Jamie Dixon

Would fit in awfully well at UMD in my opinion.  Easier recruiting than VU.  On campus facility.  Better fan base.  Deeper pockets.  He'd be a big fish I'd be after.

Pastos hasn't been fantastic at Loyola.  I know they were terrible when they took over, but they really haven't competed for the MAAC since he's been there.  I love the guy though.

I think Maryland shold hire Steve Blake -- and we should hire Bernard Barrow.

Posters on Twitter are lighting up about Lonergan for the Maryland job.  It will be crazy if we lose him over this.

So, now I know why Gtown and Maryland may play one another.

I think that Maryland realizes it's late in the game and I'm not convinced that they will want Lonergan for the long term.  One of the links Herve posted already said that a young assistant will be made "Acting Head Coach" for next season, which is destined to be a disastrous one for the Terps anyway.  It's too late for UMD to get who they want for next season, so this gives them a year to make the right choice for 2012-13.  I can't see any of the names on Seneca's list leaving for Maryland right now, but who knows about the year after.

If he's good enough for Maryland, I guess he's probably good enough for GW- no?

 DC Radio guys seem to think Lonergan is a done deal for GW. I have to think after talking to some people today that it is as well and may be announced tomorrow. 

MV, of the guys I mentioned, I could see one or two making the move now - Tubby Smith. Born in Maryland and supposedly not real thrilled about where he is. I could also see Amaker now. The others would be much more difficult. But one thing I've learned in college basketball is never say never.

seneca isn't freaking Blue Seats he is Andy Katz . The list seneca posted here was largely reflected in Andy Katz' column on ESPN.com a few minutes ago. This explains where he is getting all the info from.

Tubby Smith is most definitely miserable up here in Minnesota.  He's been whining up a storm about how the school won't build him the proper practice facility that his squad needs to be competitive, yet he won't bother to ever even attempt to whine and dine with the people who may actually be able to find money for the project.  Sound familiar?

He's also had pretty high turnover (including having Smith's former HS teammate Devoe Joseph leave the team in January this season) with a lot of guys transfering out.  Again, sound familiar?

It would definitely be interesting if Maryland poached Lonergan from us. But wasn't one of the reasons we fired KH when we did allegedly to take him away from Mason?

this has been simmering for some time now.  Fans complain that Williams will not recruit.  Williams' people suggest that he will not "play" the AAU game to get recruits.  Fans pointing to people who could have played for UMD but went to programs where the other school did not play the AAU game and still landed the recruit.  Boosters offering a ton of money to Williams to get him to leave, including renaming the arena after him.  I think Williams was going to come back - thus, the remarks by Yow.  I just think that this is make or break time and he cannot get going for another season.  What I find remarkable is that it seems like yesterday he was landing at College Park in the wake of Wade's dismissal and convinced Walt Williams to stay - and thus, built a program.  22 years, wow, where does it go?

 I also don't think that UMD will want Lonergan. Right now people are saying Jay Wright, Mike Brey and Rick Barnes. How will that fanbase react if they end up with Lonergan who is a nice get for GW but not necessarily for an A10 school.

 My fault, Lonergan is more than qualified to be an A-10 coach. Not sure he's at the level of a premier ACC program like UMD though. In the last hour Mike Brey and Sean Miller have both said they're interested in the job.

I wonder where all the people complaining about the timing are. I mean there is NO WAY at this LATE date that College Park CC could ever hope to find a good head coach and it is so unfair to the players yadda yadda yadda. Or does that arguement apply only when GW fires someone's friend/meal ticket?

GWAA, that's only relevant if Gary was forced out, which I'm not sure is the case. If he resigned on his own, then that's kind of a shitty thing to do, though the timing seems to imply his decision was based on Jordan Williams not coming back. I will say, though, that these are very different situations. Maryland is one of the most desirable jobs to open up in years and even now they'll have no trouble getting a great coach for next year.

 I guess the only difference is Williams retired voluntarily while Hobbs resigned...why let facts get in the way of your narrative though?

GWAA- I agree with your post, to a point.  Williams recruited kids.  Williams told kids he'd be there.  Now he won't be.  That makes Williams as bad as the GW administration.  for what it's worth, I don't think either are all that bad (for this).  The team wanted to get rid of a coach- and there are logical consequences and hurt feelings that follow.  Williams wanted to retire- and there are logical consequences and hurt feelings that follow.  It's just a matter of who it falls on.

Correct danjsport but who is pinning any medals on Williams for his timing? He should have made the decision earlier unless there was some other (e.g. health) reason we don't know about. And let's take this to its logical conclusion - if UMD hires a current head coach then another school is going to be dealing with this soon and possibly so forth and so on. I can't recall this major a job opening this late other than when Dean Smith retired in the Fall and UNC had no choice but to name Guthridge as his successor. I am sure there might have been others I just can't recall them. And imagine if the next coach is a Sean Miller, Mike Brey, Jay Wright, Tubby Smith or Jamie Dixon? That's another major job opening even later. This all could extend well into June if things follow a certain path.

Herve, do you like how the Post 'infomred' their readers about Mike Brey's local ties by telling them where he grew up and where he went to high school,  but omitted where he went to college? 

Seneca, it's for those reasons that I don't see Maryland making a major move this off-season.  Actually, the exception to this would be Mike Jarvis.  There, you could have an understanding among all parties that this would be a 3-5 year gig.  Some candidates are logical but would Maryland want a Tubby Smith, for example?  Otherwise, is Maryland a better job that Pitt or Villanova at this point?

Tim Brant did the same thing on the local ABC News last night. Mentioned DeMatha and strong local ties and assistant experience at Duke but didn't bother to mention he was a GW graduate.  It's that kind of omission that hopefully won't be occurring in the future in the totally revamped local college basketball scene in this area.

Gary Williams didn't leave for another job and presumably he was not forced out. He simply retired. There are always consequences and reactions to a long-time employee's departure but the world just has to deal with what was a personal decision by Williams. Guy's been as loyal a Terrapin as anyone could ask for...he gets a pass on any adverse impact this may have on the Maryland program in the short-term. Let's just see how it turns out for all those Terps fans who have been calling for his head since they didn't "cash in" on the national championship he won.

I agree with Poog about Williams.  He gave up a primo job as head coach at Ohio State to return to a mess.  Considering where they were when he took over at Maryland, they owe him just about everything.  It is unfortunate for the current recruits, but I think the guy deserves the slack.  I also think, about GW's timing, that we're better off that the new AD had some role in the coaching turnover and new hire.  This way he has at least some accountability, which is always a good thing. 

MV, don't think Maryland is a better job than Pitt or Villanova right now but it could be a few years from now. Look at the ACC. It is changing fast and how long do you think Coach K and Roy continue to coach? It could be a great opportunity for Maryland to move back into the upper echelon of the ACC in a few years. You would have to think more long-term on this if you were Dixon or Wright but I could see one of them making this move if the $$$ and other things were right. Not necessarily likely but certainly possible.

frankly they gave Brey all the "he's a GW grad guy" when we screwed him over for the job.  Too late now.
