 I'm gonna go with "Hold Your Head Up" by Argent, a song which still, somehow gets played on the radio and seemingly has no beginning or end. Of course, I'm still distraught that classic rock radio now plays U2. Ouch.

As someone who has seen live each of the Beatles, The Doors, The Who, Pink Floyd, Derek and the Dominos, Stevie Winwood. just to name a few, I actually do know a little about rock.

The worst "rock" songs are usually songs by rock musicians that don't rock.  I'd particularly like to be able to obtain the masters of two songs and have them destroyed (as well as all copies) -- Angie by the Stones and My Love by Paul McCartney.  You could argue they aren't rock songs in the first place and I wouldn't argue with you.  You could also argue that for the most part, McCartney's post-Beatles music doesn't rock either.  One rock group that I didn't get and still don't is Aerosmith.  For the most part, I've blocked out their songs.  I really really hate Dream On, particularly when he goes into the Big Screech (as opposed to his usual screech).  The only other song of theirs I can really remember is Sweet Emotion, which isn't horrible.  For some reason the goofy "rap" part doesn't bother me, although I won't argue with anyone who hates it.

I agree wholeheartedly with Steely Dan.  They invented the adult contemporary genre before there was even such a thing.  They should be shot.

Steely Dan is hard to put in a Rock category such as ToTo and other recording groups that relied heavily on studio musicians.  As rock, I see why they would be on the list.  As musicians, I thought they were very good  and really helped salvage an awful music decade along with Bruce and Dire Straights.  As to what's to be hated: Jefferson Starship, Styx (Babe), Journey - the non Santana spin-off group, Kiss and Duran Duran have whole libraries that made me puke.

The world came to a screeching halt when I watched a live performance of Popsicle Toes by Michael Franks at Lisner. I had to go to the doctor and he perscribed two Hound Dog Taylor Albums and told me to call him in the morning.

Steely Dan (i.e. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen) were/are phenominal, groundbreaking musicians who were light years ahead of their time. I wish I could have seen them early in their SD careers. Countdown to Ecstasy is still a great, great listen and if anyone can, I suggest checking out those early 70s bootlegs. Show Biz Kids is as good as it gets. The band has evolved into the adult contemporary phase of their careers, but woe is they who brush off what SD brought to rock music.

You had me until your comment on the Beatles.  Nobody has come close to the innovative brilliance of McCartney/Lennon.  IMHO, to this day, nothing comes close to either St. Pepper or Abby Road.  I will never get tired of the Beatles.

LSF, If you don't think anything recent has come close to Sgt. Pepper or Abbey Road you should check out Nas and Junior Gong's work on "Distant Relatives."  That album is tight IMFARO.

SW, sorry about the misspelling.  Agreed on SD (two words for me "Pretzel Logic").  I thought their concert at Constitution Hall last year when they played the entire Royal Scam album before they transitioned to their other music was as good as it gets.  Being tired of the Beatles is like being an Yankees fan and being tired of World Series parades.  Simply put, there are some musicians that changed music forever - both the sound of it and/or how we listen to it.  The Beatles are part of that elite class.

As an individual who got to see them perform live last month for the first time, I can most whole-heartedly assure you that U2 doesn't suck.

U2? Steely Dan? Hopefully they are some new recruits who can anchor our frontline and give us depth at the pg position.
