Anybody else watch this? This is my scouting report, though note that I missed most of the first quarter:
Larson is big and athletic. He looks like a legit 6'10", 240 -- but he's no stiff. He can move for a big man. Physically, he reminded me of Kevin Lyde from Temple (for those who remember him).
It was hard to judge his offense because he was the team's 5th option and despite playing almost the whole game that I saw he didn't touch the ball on offense more than a couple of times.
That said, the two shots I remember showed a lot of potential. On one, he caught the ball about ten feet from the basket on the right side, and made a very quick fluid dribble to his left (toward the basket) and threw it in from about four feet over a defender who was caught flat-footed. On another, he caught it in the post and showed a nice form on a 4 foot turnaround over the defender. Shot didn't go down, but it looked nice.
However, here's the problem. He looked EXTREMELY raw on defense and rebounding. He consitently looked lost on defense -- not that his man scored (other team never fed the post), but he was slow to provide help defense and rotate and seemed unsure how to get through screens.
On the rebounds, he looked even worse. I'm not sure he had more than a board or two while I was watching. The problem was that when the shot would go up, he seemed to not know where to be to get the boards. He was often out of position and/or having trouble finding his man to box out. and when someone else got position on him, he didn't fight through it or contest the boards at all.
Likewise, off-the-ball on offense, he seemed a little unsure. His screens weren't very hard and he didn't seem to know where to be. Then again, it's just a high school team, not college and i don't watch much HS so maybe that's all pretty typical of a HS player.
My conclusion is that this is definitely a kid we'd want to land. That size and athleticism combo isn't something you find very often, and he could become an excellent offensive player. But based on that one game I saw -- and it's just one game for a HS kid, and on national TV nonetheless -- I wouldn't expect him to be ready to play defense or rebound for a couple of years.
