"England defeated India by 196 runs at Lord’s in London in the first of four test matches between the teams. India was all out for 261 runs after starting the fifth and final day 80-1. James Anderson took 5 wickets for 65 runs and Stuart Broad had 3-57.
England has a 1-0 lead in the series; the second test starts Friday. England can overtake India as the top team in the International Cricket Council rankings if it wins the series by two tests or more. The match was the 2,000th in the 134 years of elite Test cricket.
Anderson dismissed Rahul Dravid for 36, VVS Laxman for 56, Sachin Tendulkar for 12, Suresh Raina for 78 and Harbhajan Singh for 12. India bowler Zaheer Khan, whose injury was a blow to India’s bowling, was not out but did not score.
England’s batting in the second innings was led by a century from wicketkeeper Matt Prior. The innings ended after England declared on 269-6. England batted first on Thursday and declared on 474-8 on Friday after rain cut into play. Kevin Pietersen reached 202 runs to lead the host in its first innings. India was bowled out for 286 on the third day, with Dravid reaching 103."
