Saw this while I was searching for Nnoko news...

Lots of interest in Patricio Garino (6-7, 185, Cordova, Argentina/Montverde, FL Montverde Academy). Played for Argentina national team in the under 19 worlds. Only high school player on the national team. Vanderbilt, UAB, Miami, George Washington and SMU among his current suitors. There will be more. Really nice player in transition.

Nice writeup on DraftExpress and his profile on the FIBA U-19 site

Here he is making a Carl Elliott special and giving an interview

Lots of other links on Google

ESPN writeup...

Surprise player

Patricio Garino (Montverde, Fla./Montverde Academy)
2012, SG, 6-6, 185 pounds
Garino is a long, versatile guard with a great basketball IQ. He does the little things that do not show up on a stat sheet, but help his team win. His length allows him to finish well above the rim when driving to the basket and he has the Manu Ginobli Euro step. Garino also has great court vision when driving the basketball and can make any type of pass off the dribble. Defensively, he has great anticipation off the ball and knows when to shoot the gaps for steals and when to play solid. Garino rebounds down from the guard position and, if unable to grab the rebound for himself, he will tip the ball to a teammate. When the game was tied on Saturday versus Orlando Christian Prep, with 4.8 seconds left and the ball out of bounds on the sideline, coach Kevin Sutton drew up "America's Play." Garino set a cross screen and came off a double screen where he caught the ball at top of the key, behind 3-point line and knocked down the 3 shot for the win. It was impressive. Garino played for the Argentina junior national team last summer.

On the "black players" note: I'm skeptical Garino himself said that, though will say it is possible. Not saying I have a ton of experience in the Southern Cone, but I will say that from the experience I do have racism is much more publicly allowable than it is here. I've heard things said about Paraguayans and Brazilians that are pretty shocking. I doubt a kid who has issues with black players is going to come to GW given the other players and coaching staff, and I would not be surprised if the writer came to that conclusion himself.

I came across this ranking of Florida High School players, which has Garino ranked 18th in the state.

However, I may be wrong, but it seems like this year he is outscouring both Michael Frazier (ranked #3, committed to Florida) and Anthony Cortesia (#7, Ole Miss).   Maybe Garino will turn out to be a major-level player.

There's also a couple of guards high up on this list from Arlington County Day, who recently decommitted from South Carolina.  Maybe Sutton can work some FL recruiting magic...

Article from Argentinian Mag (translated by Google).   FYI:  Marplatense means from Mar del Plata (Argentinian city); Pato, his nickname, means duck.

On The Right Track

Settled in their new life in the United States, Patricio Garino marplatense basketball aims to continue his career at George Washington University. Via Facebook, shared with The Atlantic recently the unforgettable experience of Montverde Academy in Orlando

In August, his life will turn around. And Patricio Garino, marplatense basketball must hit another jump. Two years after first stepping on U.S. soil, the boy prepares to join the George Washington University.

"Pato" who always dreamed of being someone in the basketball and walking the path step by step but growing in every way, chatted via Facebook with The Atlantic, recently shared this unforgettable experience that passes.

It seems to have fallen far that "Basketball without Borders" in Mexico, where the NBA players saw their conditions, projected and posted becándolo. "That night I cried with emotion. And at 7 months was at Montverde Academy in Orlando, "he said Garino, by outlining the beginning of the story.

After a logical time to adapt, the 18-year-old boy began to feel at home and then yielded, not only within the court. "I thank my manager Mr. K had the courtesy of giving me this opportunity, my teachers who have guided me along the way of education, and my coaches, who are daily plotting my path and giving shape to my dreams" . It takes a while, pauses in the story and thanks to all. A great gesture.

In addition to earning a spot on the team, be a reference to their peers, get the award for best player of the tournament Kingdom of The Sun in Ocala where he was crowned champion and one of the best in the competition, with a record of 13 wins and 2 losses, Garino also accumulated awards "in life."

When he returned from his break in 2011, was chosen as "prefects" a very important position within the educational community, since, according to reports "should gather a lot of the studied conditions: high grades, good character, good with students and teachers, have a leading position and be approved in all interviews with teachers and staff hierarchy and the Director. " And about his role, which had only 11 guys over, described: "We have to check the rooms at night and notice the time off phones and computers. We organize trips every weekend, working with management getting new families and new students, and enjoy lots of benefits, for example, do not have hours of supervised study. We are free to study in our rooms or anywhere in the school. "

But its not enough, on its merits, was named "Honor Councils", "a group of 10 qualified students who have the function to judge the students who commit serious offenses, hear their statements and in some way if necessary to defend the school authorities. "

Although everything seemed to go well, a change greatly disturbed "Duck". Kevin Sutton, his coach since he entered Montverde, did not renew the contract and Kevin Boyle. "It was hard not to find as ever in his office," Garino said about his former coach. "He was my mentor during my first year in college, I shared many weekends with his family, and felt part of my life," he said. "I had to await the arrival of new coach and start over again to earn a place in the team," said the Mar del Plata.

After the uncertainty, talent and sacrifice, Garino formed man of white teas, which "has an important sport curriculum and their only goal is to win." Boyle brought players in the positions of Union emerged kid and it was very cold in the relationship with their target, as "not get involved with us on the staff. On the court we were just players and off the court the relationship does not exist. "

It's time to play and preseason games, the title alternated marplatense kid as a bodyguard, eaves and a power forward. "I told myself that the hand came last. My head was spinning, I did not know what to think. Did not talk much with us. And I wondered if I was putting in all positions closed because none of them and believed that any time I stood on the bench. But before the official season, one day I said to Patrick, I like all positions, you're a versatile player with excellent vision, we will have a good season this year. "

Beginning in August, will leave a strong emotion, follow the path he wants to travel. Just as he had to get away from Mar del Plata, his friends and family, now have to leave Orlando. "I leave all this will cost. This wonderful and my teammates. We are one big family everyone will be difficult to close this stage, "said Garino, who chose George Washington University, seduced by the minutes of the game that will have. "With the coach, Mike Lonergan, we understood from day one and speak clearly. There is a covenant commitment between the two and I loved it. It's the type of people looking into his eyes and squeezed his hand hard. I have confidence in him and know that I transmitted the same, "said the boy and said:" My desire is to play from the first year as much as possible. But I know that I expected a big challenge. I have on my team players who are four years older, but that does not worry me. My head is already adapted to this system and I used to work hard. I have overcome many obstacles in these two years. I have many strengths and very hungry to win. "

Textual

THE VISIT OF THEIR PARENTS

"I spent the Christmas and New Year, accompanied by my parents came to visit me and we can not travel because we are in high sports season. It's nice to get a dose of family, revitalizes the soul. And I was joined on the tournament as when I was in Mar del Plata. We really enjoyed those days. "

HUMAN EXPERIENCE

"We played in Memphis, Saint Judes benefit of the hospital fighting cancer in children and is home to about 500. I was lucky to go and moved me. I realized that not everything in life is basketball and you can not be a sleepless night or low hunger for losing a match. You have to enjoy life to the fullest and without depriving yourself of anything. "

Player Spotlight: Patricio Garino

Headed to GW, this Argentina native has a unique game, capable of defending, shooting, and passing. In his words, “basketball in Argentina is more team basketball”, a philosophy he expects to be present in Foggy Bottom. The presence of former Montverde Academy head coach Kevin Sutton on the staff there was a further boon, though Sutton did not recruit him to GW, head coach Mike Lonergan did.

First year MA coach Kevin Boyle revealed Patricio is even better than he’s displayed in NHSI action. “He’s playing, like I said, in tremendous pain” given a knee injury, “or he’d be at 12 points. He’s short arming everything and he’s pressing a little bit, because he really can’t get open and finish”.

Garino should be an excellent A10 player.

I had mentioned that Patricio needed more lift on his jump shot.  The tendinitis to the knee makes perfect sense as to why we're not seeing that.

In discussing the relative merits of highly rated Anthony Bennett today a Gator Country poster made this statement which was highly complimentary of Garino's play:

"I watched the Monteverde/Findlay prep game. I have to admit I was somewhat disappointment in what I saw from Bennett. He is a beast physically but had no real presence in the game at all. Seemed like he didn't want to play in the post at all and was always hovering around the 3 point line. Even though he was the biggest guy on the floor he had no rebounding presence at all and was getting dominated by Monteverde's Patricio Gurino (George Washington commit)"

I must've missed this, but Northstar Basketball ranked Pato the #150 recruit in the country for 2012.

5/9/2012 12:17:20 PM
Poster: Dolphin Michael

BM and SMF, if anyone even watches one or two games, that assessment is close to being on the mark. His game has about as many pluses in it as Mike Hall's did coming into GW. His recognition is very high and he is a great passer. His passing is great. Most people can recognize bad passing skills, but it takes a good basketball fan to recognize a passer who always gets the ball on the money and at the right time. The guy sees the game. Add to it that he was playing on bad wheels and he was defending and rebounding the post and covering the 3 very actively--even blocking shots.

I would say #150 is fair. Pato may not start for GW, but he will definitely see significant minutes. He makes other players better (as they say). Garino will go to the hole if he gets rushed when catching on the perimeter. No knock on Mikic, but he has a much more complete offensive game. BUT, at the same time, he will make Mikic a better player when they are out on the court together.

Finally, Pato will make the transition of the two guards McDonald and Savage that much less pressurized, since he is, in the classic sense, a point forward. Again, I wouldn't try to pidgeon-hole guys into the line-up. Assuming the same ballhandling from Kromah this next year, playing Pato at 3 makes having Kromah at 2 not that big a liability and, indeed, will cause some severe matchup problems for our opponents.

I know enough Spanish to know mala suerte ain't no good. Looks like he's down 6 weeks with that knee tendinitis.

@AleRPerez: Garino fue convocado a la gira por Angola pero una tendinitis de rodilla (6 semanas recup) lo dejó afuera. Mala suerte para un buen proyecto

I think it's Mala suerte for the Argentinian team, but buenas noticias for GW.

Garino out six weeks with tendonitis in the knee is good for GW? Will he be back in time for the trip to Italy? Seems like the 10 days of pre-trip practice and the games overseas are going to be pretty vital to this team being able to put it together this season.

Since we knew he had tendenitis, its good news to see that he's skipping the Montverde China trip and the Argentina (?) Angola trip to rest up.

Six weeks means that he should be ready for Italy, but even if he's unable to play in Italy, he'll still be with the team and should be absorbing everything he will need to know.  Granted there is no substitute for playing but the only real remedy for tendinitis is rest.  Better that he rests up now.

Well, he's definitely not resting his joints on his vacation back home.  Apparently, he started playing with the Mar del Plata U19 team for a regional tournament...

Spanish Article

I wonder if our coaches know about this.

Long interview with a Argentine blog.  The translaton is stinky, but you get the gist.

The article is worth it just for the translation. It is also nice to see that the players in the NBA from Argentina get in touch with him.

I'm worried now because I don't think the flex works well for the grassroots support base position.

herve, I'm not partial. In fact, I like the wisonsin swing a bit, but whatever, we have to involve a bigger diet of screens to force bad defensive decisions. I figure that the size/development factor is mostly to prepare the team for being more physical in the screening and rebounding areas. We also, of course, get endourance and speed.

If we are going to step up our game, we have to be much stronger than last year. BTW, this is especially true down in the blocks where, a double-low set with a seal by the second man can free a big for an easy lob and shot. Usually the plays work early, than, also later as the the defenders tire or weaker players have to come into the game for guys in foul trouble.

Of course, it isn't bad when it is a 10 minute walk around Larsen, and a 5 minute walk around Paris... space eaters. They both pass well. If we rotate the ball, they both have been around long enough at high enough levels to learn how to pin their man. I'm not suggesting 20 ppg out of the 5, but enough to impact the game and enhance the scoring options for others.

Sum greater than parts.... Take a guy like Garino and give him a passing lane to a guy cutting to the hole with a half a step from a screen and you have 2. Freshmen or no, I look for a higher offensive efficiency this year, not to mention more points on putbacks. Garino is relentless on the glass. In that respect, he is a lot like Walt from days gone by. He will get an additional 4 to 6 points off the glass on putbacks.

Larsen knows this because he was a pain in the side of Montrose when they played at GPrep.

Just remember, DM. The key to strength always is dynamic tension.
