Mike Jarvis has done an impressive job at Florida Atlantic. The hustle and abilty of his team in the double-overtime loss to Miami today was something we sure haven't seen  this year at GW. It was a fun game to watch even though FAU lost.  I wish I could say the same for the year's GW games. Mike has done a great job recruiting in Florida. Did Kuester leave Jarvis with better players for his first year at GW than Hobbs left  Lonergan? I would be interested in what fellow posters think.

If Lonergan  can't dramatically improve the recruiting -- for next season  -- we will stay at the bottom A-10 the next few years -- not to mention we will need to forget NIT or NCAA.  I realize this year's team is not made up of his recruits, but to watch the disconnect between the coach and his team is discouraging. Losing at home to Bradley and Loyola is downright depressing. And Bradley lost to Drexel today.

Was not trying to bring back Jarvis a mistake?

And did Jarvis inherit better players in his first season than Lonergan has for this season?

What more do you want recruited for next year?

Jarvis is a very good coach and glad to see he is doing well at FAU- wouldn't be surprised to see them win a 13 vs 4 seed type game in the NCAA this year or next...Coming into GW, he had a fairly good nucleus in 1990- a number of seniors, plus Sonni Holland and Dirk Surles as Sophomores- Alvin Pearsall was a freshman, and I forget if he was a key contributor that year, but Holland and Surles definitely were. Jarvis had a pretty high profile win against Stanford early on, which helped, and he created a lot of excitement around campus. The A-10 Semifinal OT win that year against St Joes may have been their biggest win in many years, and was a sign of exciting times ahead (it was my first trip to the Palestra, and will always remember the atmosphere that night).

I do wonder if there was any discussion internally at GW this year about bringing him back- if this was a few years ago, it would have made sense, but ....the challenge is that he is now 65, and this could not be a longterm play. It's hard to be patient given the disappointment of the last several years, but it's going to take some time for the team to be where we would like to see them. I'm willing to give Lonergan the time he needs to build this team the right way, and then let's see what we have....my guess is that 2 years from now, we will be much happier about the team than we are today.

Whatever anybody thinks about ML, I think it's hard to not be impressed with the 4 recruits he's signed for next year.

You're kidding, right?   Sonni Holland and Dirkk Surles were way better than anyone on this team (and I like some of the players on this team).   Pretty sure Glen Sitney was still around, and Alvin Pearsall was there, a very solid point guard. 

People forget that Jarvis went to the NIT his first year.  We lost to South Carolina.

 Talking about Surles, for some reason, what I am reading about Savage kind of reminds me of Dirk.

 When I read LSF post, my fingers could not hit the keyboard fast enough. I agree four fold. I have seen Savage play. He is the re-incarnation of Dirkk Surles. Surles, imo was the fiercist quality player I have seen play for GW. Remember, he made 1st  Team All Coference his junior year and no other GW has accomplished that. He single handedly beat Temple in Philadelphia when they were top twenty and GW never beat Temple in those days. Add Sonni Holland to the class Jarvis inherited, and it is fair to say MJ  was loaded to compete. Alvin Pearsall, recruited late in the process was the steadiest four year  point guard that GW has had. Shwanta Rogers was a great player. He controlled games.  I wish we had either one right now.

Jarvis coached a terrific game vs, Miami, including a comeback from down six with about a minute and a half. Hard-nosed defense, not suprisingly, made the difference in the comeback.

TV announcers said he got jobbed on a few calls. And then at the end of the second overtime, with his team even I think or down within a single possesion, one of his players got jobbed on a little handcheck something like 35 feet away from the basket.

Jarvis had a mini-point guard, perhaps 5-6, who may have been the one with a Shawnta like shot at the end of regulation (literally one second left). MJ got down on his knees and did that trademark arm swinging gesture that looks like an exaggerated strike call. No sign of age on that exuberant outburst.

Point is moot, and we got ML. But Jarvis's Florida Atlantic has been challenging big teams and he seems to have a lot of coaching left in him.

Yup Bigfan - the point guard's name is Ray Taylor and he's also got an impressive freshman in Omari Grier. In my opinion, Jarvis was the best coach we ever had and will continue to be until someone leads past the Sweet Sixteen.

ML has better players in his first year.  He was left with more, no doubt about it.  KH was 12-16 in year one, 12-17 year two.  Monroe helped the cause, but other than that those teams were relatively young.  Whats the over/under on ML getting to 12 wins this season or for that matter next season?

 Thank you, CBO. I agree. Jarvis is still the best coach we have had until someone leads us to the Elite Eight. Watching his Florida Atlantic team Saturday against Miami reminded me of his GW days.  Sure wish we had tried to bring him back. This year's GW team is no match for this year's Florida Atlantic team. I agree that ML has better players on his first team than Hobbs had when he arrived. ML sure better win more than 12 games in each of the next two years.
