Twitter is on fire about Greenberg getting the axe at VPI today.  I don't think I'd be sheding a tear for this one.

Lucky for him he can take whatever job he wants instead of his former employer being a vindictive jerk and interfering with his future.

Bad Karma, eh!?

Maybe he can take the UDC job and be re-united with Nigel Munson.

Just too bad VT didn't have Jack and Dom running the show. I think they would have let Greenberg dangle for a year or two and tried to detroy his career, just like they did to Karl.  The only difference is that Greenberg would have probably been a deserving recipient. 

One wonders whether LFO tries to be an imbecile here or whether it just comes naturally.

I like Greenberg, though I realize others don't. Have followed him closely in recent years.

No matter how you feel about Seth Greenberg, his departure was truly gracelss. AD at Va. Tech is an asshat of the first ordre, and it is being noted nationally.

What Va. Tech did, with its clasless, clownish athletic director, makes KH look like he had parades and roses strewn at his feet upon departure.

He resuscitated Va. Tech basketball and had only ONE bad year, instead of four. In fact, everyone knows he should have gone to the NCAA's at least once and probably more in recent years. Someone on the commitee had it out for him. We all know what it is like to be sharfted by the Kremlin-like NCAA selection committee.

They actually announced a press conference hours before bothering to notify Greenberg who was WITH A RECRUIT at the time.

Unlike us, they will be hurt by losing his recruits, one of which apparently lit up the Capital Classic the other night.

FQ, Great point, maybe Greenberg and the current coach could have a hotdog eating contest for the position.

There is probable backstory to all of this involving assistants and the way they were treated. Just look at the number of assistants he has had over the years. Following 2009-10, he lost 2 assistants (including DBOs), Following 2010-11, he lost 2 assistants, following 2011-12 he lost 3 assistants. That's a tremendous rate of tournover at an ACC school since only one became a head coach (Courtney at Cornell).

Terrible coach. He schedled down and couldnt convert top-shelf lineups into winners. His teams at USF had NBA talent and never made the tourney, so why VPI would have given him a promotion and banked on anything more than the abysmal performance he turned in there is beyond me. Hasta.

Don't think Larry Brown would williingly coach in the same conference against UNC, but I get your point.

Never was impressed with Greenberg, what a whiner!  Everyone season, with the whining.

When Greenberg was at Long Beach St., I remember there being a bunch of stories about people yelling anti-semitic things at him from the stands (I assume during Big West road games, though I don't recall). Because of that, I always had sympathy for him, though I stopped caring about him after the Nigel Munson incident -- even if Hobbs' tampered, ultimately you have to consider the big picture for the kids' future.

the timing is similar to kh's firing last year.  i wonder if the greenberg fans at va tech will be as upset as the hobbs backers were.

 The VT AD stated he based the firing of Greenberg on the loss of assistants by VT over the last few years and not the team's record.

However, no reasons were given for the turnover of assistants. Or why Greenberg was at fault for the turnover.

Last year my undergrad alma mater. UF, lost two assistants. One left to become a head coach at Wyoming. The other left to to serve as an assistant to his father at Louisville. This year UF  lost an assistant because a position opened at Kansas when an assistant there left to become a head coach and the assistantant had been a long time assistant for Bill Self before he left to become a head coach at St. Johns. That's the loss of 3 assistants in 2 years. In othe words, major colleges lose assistants for various reasons and the tunover of assistants is not a per se  basis for the firing of the head coach. 

It was reported that Greenberg's assistants were, for the most part, leaving for lateral positions, not promotions.  That was part of the AD's concern. 

Reading between the lines of what the AD said, he fired Greenberg because he didn't like having a jerk for a coach.

Greenberg's contention was that the school badly underpaid their assistant coaches which is why the revolving door existed.  Seth is a pretty volatile guy so it is feasible that the assistants left because of money, or because of friction with Seth, or both.  And to answer SMF, Seth was never an assistant coach at GW under Gimelstob. (That combination I most assuredly would have remembered.)

Feinstein has excellent points.

VA. Tech AD is a total classless ass.

Reporting is that Lutz is a serious contender for VT job.

Entertainment value of watching Lutz aside, what a step up for an ACC program-- guy fired from Charlotte.

I hate to see some guys get fired.  However, I thought I called this two months ago.  As to him missing the tournament - guys get fired after getting in the NCAA and missing one year.  Va. Tech was stuck in a spot.  Like his alter ego KH - when he was forced to purge the schedule of smoke and mirror patsies, his team had a losing record.  A few upset wins here did not impress. In the end, SG had nothing to show for a program that has an incredible amount of money to spend.  Time to go.
