herve not to throw out the race card, because I know you are not that way - but other than his race what about RGIII is like Akili?  Akili was not highly recruited, went to a JC and worked his way up to Ore. and played one year at DI.  He missed training camp and it became clear could not grasp a field in motion at the college+ level (he bombed in non NFL stages as well),  RGIII was one of the most sought after QB's in HS because not only could he run at track speeds (BTW, Herve my daughter ran at Penn this week - shameless plug) but could hit medium deep throws with rarely seen accuracy - somebody compared his accuracy to Aikman.  We would have heard of him earlier in college but he got hurt.  However, he was under center as a freshman.  During work outs they noted he was very accurate with short throws and knows how to change speed and throwing angle (side arm, three quarter arm etc.) to let the receiver adjust to the ball to maximize his ability to run after the catch.  I am sorry, I just do not see the comparison.

you said you liked him better when he was named Aklli.  I just do not see the comps.  A guy who plays less than 15 games in DI.  Who has a strong arm but nobody says he had touch.  Was taken third because the higher rated passers Couch (also a bust) and McNabb were already gone.  I recall that Smith had huge question marks - he had not played many games.  There were many flops during that era:  Russell, Leaf, Couch, McNown, Harrington, Carr, Ware, Shuler, Klinger . . .

I am just kind of confused why you would select a black flop when white flops or black sucess stories (McNair) were on the table?  (I am not a Cincinnati fan so I cannot remark on the can't miss or savior part).  I thought your post was kind of odd and resembled some other posts I had read pre-trade on the Cleveland Browns blogs in which folks seem kind of upset when in discussing the Browns need to move-up to draft RGIII was met by some Akili Smith comparisons.  but I believe your heart - I will drop it.

notta, can I compare RGIII to Charlie Batch?  Batch was pretty light-skinned so I'm hoping their difference in shade will allow it clear of your censor.  If you won't give me Batch can I have Mark Rypien?  He's a Native American so that's got to be far enough to slide under the radar.  Since Griffin was born in Japan can I compare his footwork with Asashoryu who was also born in Asia?  I'm confused.

It seems like you can make your argument, notta, that an akili RGIII comparison isn't accurate...without involving race.  I definitely see your point with the things you've raised.  I suspect that Herve was prodding the Redskin nation (perhaps he's even included) more than making an indepth comparison. 

Only Herve can answer these questions with absolute certainty.  That said, let's not make Notta out to be a hater or even out of left field for raising this.  If I had to guess, I would say that Herve was making a fairly innocuous joke without giving any real thought to race.  At the same time, the fact that RGIII reminds Herve of Akili, even in a joking manner, can not likely be attributed solely to playing style and expectations.  Whether conscious or not, the fact that Herve used Akili as his reference likely has something to do with race.  I do not believe there was any malice or bigotry behind the reference, yet at the same time, I do get why Notta would raise the question.

I actually meant to say he reminds of Roman Gabriel. Does that make everyone happy? If we parse this out anymore we'll be down to a click language. The only thing more annoying than Redskins fans are.....I actually have NO IDEA how to finish this statement and/or if there is a finish to this statement.

I WAS a HUUUUUGE Bengals fan until about 1991 when I pretty much stopped watching all pro sports. I freakin' loved 'em. It's true. I can't name one player on their team now, nor can I name a player on almost ANY NFL team. I like it that way.

The NFL, to me, is the only pro league that's worth watching regularly, despite the annoying buzziness around each game and the interminable reviews of plays.  I think it's the only sport where the players' continued physical growth makes the game more fun to watch. It also helps to have only 16 games.  The rest of professional sports has become one long grind.
