2013 Recruiting Summary
5/30/2012 12:43:04 PM
Poster: BM

I put together a list of the known targets for 2013, categorized into three positions.  The PF position is a bit broad with mostly inside/outside guys with an eye for a rebound and/or bulk.  Power Wings?  Rebounding Wings?  Too bad Carrera is a 2012.

We have three spots openning with Bynes, Smith and Pellom graduating.  Lasan could also transfer out without sitting a year if he graduates on time (and is so inclined).

The listed players are ones we have offered, or at least they say we have offered.

My Ideal three would be Rene Castro, Josh Hart and Kris Jenkins (edging out Schilling).

PG

Kyle Davis

Rene Castro

Nigel Johnson

SG

Nick Griffin

Josh Hart

Davon Reed

Deshaun Morman

Jon Severe

PF

Kris Jenkins

Khris Lane

Gavin Schilling

Jordan Fuchs

Jamall Robinson

Christian Hairston

I would expect shooting to be a priority next year, more than a PG or even a PF (note: Jenkins can shoot, as can I think most of these PFs)

The PGs are also all shoot-first types in the mold of TT.

Great job BM. Rene Castro and Kris Jenkins might not be that much of a stretch since each has developed strong personal ties to the coaching staff. GW has a chance. Davon Reed and John Severe are out of our reach. Deshaun Morman has academic challenges that are insurmountable to obtain qualification. I would be pleased with Nick Griffin and Ahmad Fields plus one. If we do not sign Fields , watch him attend St. Joes and haunt GW for four years. The problem with reaching for the stars is that you might be everyones second choice. You strive for chicken but end up with chicken salad. Despite this, there is optimism surrounding the program. I plan on doubling my season ticket allotment. I will keep my fingers crossed on the recruiting scene.

9/19/2012 2:57:02 PM
Poster: herve

If you ran a list like this last year you'd see lots of lines drawn through potential recruits as well. This staff seems to cast their net much wider in hopes of getting a few bites. Also, when you bring-in five new players, you're recruiting is bound to narrow a bit.

9/19/2012 2:58:34 PM
Poster: LA Fan

I feel a little bit the same as adclub.  Were they too ambitious in thinking they could get some of these guys?   There is still time, and if they land Severe and Embiid, it would be another strong class on paper.  But that's a big if.

9/19/2012 3:19:00 PM
Poster: ziik the shirtmaker

This year's new guys are the core of the team. Like herve suggested, the likelihood of a big new recruiting class of frosh may be slim. But, there is the whole, new, great big world of transfers. Hopefully, they know how to get to the nation's capitol; and ML seems amenable to taking chances.

I'm not about to be prematurely pessimistic.

9/19/2012 3:49:02 PM

Actually, this year's recruiting class is absolutely critical. You don't need 4 studs, but you need 1-2 to go with this current class.

If you think back to the good Hobbs years, we landed Omar, Mike, Pops and Kireev.  That class started to get it turned around,  But it was the next class of Carl, JR, and Ricky Lucas that really pushed us over the top.

i think they can sell some good players that the nucleus is in place now and we are just 1 or 2 great recruits from being a threat for a nice March run.

9/19/2012 4:49:04 PM
Poster: BM

I think getting either Castro or Severe is critical to calling this a mildly successful class.  We Lose Bynes and possibly Kromah is a guard light team.  Most of the top PFs we were targetting are gone, which has been pretty disappointing.  Hopfully they have a few other guys working in the background.

9/19/2012 4:50:32 PM
Poster: ziik the shirtmaker

I'd agree, FQ. But, to my recollection, that's the sole example of GW having two good years in a row, and the total number of guys who stayed was not a big one. Watch, Poog or DM or LSF will come up with another couple of consecutive years. Maybe.

We already have one 2013 recruit. I'd be real happy with 1-2 more guys who are 2013-14 eligible, and c an play. More than that, and GW suddenly is looking a litlle bit like a program. That would be a welcome shock.

9/19/2012 5:14:57 PM
Poster: adclub

BM, I agree with that assessment on Castro or Severe desperately need one of them to commit.  The total lack of big man recruitment has me worried.  But I suppose with Larsen & Maragakos filling the middle for a while we have some flexibility.  To have my druthers, I would like another pogo-stick like Armwood waiting in the wings.  IMO, Joel Embiid is a pipe-smokers dream, I would use the strikethrough on that one immediately.

9/19/2012 5:56:16 PM

There has been nothing to suggest Kromah is going anywhere.

9/19/2012 6:16:04 PM
Poster: Free Quebec

ziik, we landed Alexander Koul one year, Shawnta and Yegor then next.

I believe we landed Nimbo Hammonds and Antoine Hart one year, then backed it up with the Kwame, Vaughn and Yinka class the next.

In fact, I'm not sure you could think of any GW NCAA team that didn't land have back to back classes in whcih both classes had at least one big time player.

9/19/2012 6:35:40 PM
Poster: thinker

If Kromah graduates this year, then there's a good chance he would leave because:

1)  If he has another bad year adjusting to ML and the flex he'll want to leave and ML will be just as happy to have him leave

2)  If he has a really good year there will be tons of teams that would love to have him come play for a year

9/19/2012 6:38:42 PM
Poster: ziik the shirtmaker

Of course you're correct, FQ. But I was thinking more in line of two consecutive classes of 3-4-or 5 freshman who are solid contributors and who stay 3-4 years. There was a year like that in the 70's ( two nice, big classes in a row), but I think 4 of 6 guys in the second class flunked or transferred out. And, I recall a GW coach saying once that he had a (one) big man, so he did not need to recruit one for the next year. We were recruiting weenies. I don't expect 5 more quality freshman this year, but it sure would be nice to add 3, at least.

9/19/2012 6:41:28 PM
Poster: ziik the shirtmaker

I have had the same dreadful thoughts respecting Kromah as Thinker. In fact, unless ML has the colonials on a roll, Kromah would be a dope not to transfer to a big name program, where he can negotiate a bigger contract. He could be the icing on some program's cake.

9/19/2012 6:59:05 PM
Poster: Free Quebec

Yeah, I don't think you can expect back to back classes of 4-5 stars.  There aren't usually that many scholarships open, let alone enough minutes for that many stars.

But if you can land 1-2 strong ones in the second year that's what it takes.  Griffin appears to be a stellar shooter, so maybe we're well on our way to that.

9/19/2012 8:49:11 PM

Alternately, the staff didn't want any of these guys anyway because  they found a 6'11'' shot blocker and rebounder during the Italy trip and are stashing him away in some New England prep school.

Lightning could strike twice.  Right?

Question for BM: are the players that have been crossed off the list above all signed LOIs or verbally committed to play somewhere other than GW, or are we no longer recruiting them. Or, are they crossed off the list because we don't have a realistic shot a signing them because we're not their shortlist?

9/19/2012 9:42:29 PM

All of the above, with the proviso that as always, all I know, I get from the web.

Thanks BM. I ask because of recruits like Josh Hart, who as far as I've read hasn't committed, but has shortened his list according to some sources. Early on it looked like we were recruiting him hard, but now it looks like his list is down to Villanova, Rutgers, & Penn state. Unless he's the top SG on each school's list, isn't there a chance he could end up somewhere else?

9/19/2012 10:48:32 PM

He hasn't mentioned GW in a long time.  I guess it's possible, but likely wishful thinking.

Keep in mind that at this time last year, neither Maragkos or Garino had been posted about on this board.  My guess is that there will be other 2013 recruits that are NOT on the above list...maybe some  more foriegn born players.

9/20/2012 11:29:13 AM
Poster: adclub

I was looking at previous threads last night to see when recruits committed or were mentioned as targets and generally it was around or later than now.  Bobo, I have the same hopes but would like to see some of DC's top talent, especially from the likes of Episcopal/Landon/Sidwell/Gonzaga along with Team Takeover in the mix.  I would love to build on the local recruiting success we had last year.  Additionally, the further the assistant coaches get away from kids they coached the weaker the connection becomes.

I've read the thread twice, BM, and you are making me nervous. Should I be?

9/20/2012 1:29:39 PM
Poster: BM

Don't know if nervous is the right word.

The "New Coach" luster wears off pretty quickly and you have to transition to the "Great Program" sale to potential recruits.  I know ML & staff are believers in GW as a fantastic school, but you need the wins before you can fully sell the "Great Program" argument.  KH failed in that transition, partially because of Omargate and, I think, partially because he never bought into The George Washington University.  I'm very hopeful ML and Nero will be successful in capitalizing on a winning program.  Now let's go get the wins.

I also would suggest that the cupboard is no longer empty.

Talk about counting chickens.  The team hasn't played so much as an exhibition game against an NCAA-member opponent but the recruiting class has already been declared great, so we're into considering whether we'll have two great recruiting classes in a row, and some are worried that Kromah's going to have such a great season that he'll get snatched up by a BCS-level program.  Nothing

9/20/2012 4:14:27 PM
Poster: Alumnus

Nothing ever happens at GW like a player who had to be rested for tendinitis at 18 or so years old turns out to have a serious chronic problem, a key returnee whose wrist is injured misses the whole season, a hot prospect or two discovers he really can't function under his college coach's system, or anything like that.  I'm optimistic but I'm looking forward to watching this team actually play.

9/20/2012 4:19:04 PM

To me, it's impossible to discount how big of a recruiting advantage it was to have a 2 week Italian vacation at the beginning of this year.  I'll bet this trip was heavily sold to this year's recruits.  That's pretty much a one time thing - and it looks to me like they used it well.

9/20/2012 4:24:56 PM
Poster: ziik the shirtmaker

Alumnus, you sound like you've got some premature aging thing going on. Get a checkup. Heck, this is GW. I've seen us all have false optimism when we've had.essentially, no recruits and nobody coming back, either. Whatever it takes, get a pick-me-up.

9/20/2012 4:35:36 PM
Poster: Alumnus

Ziik, I re-upped for my tickets pretty soon after I was notified, and am looking forward to the season, more so than in a few years.  I think it'll be great fun to watch the new guys in action.  That's a pick-me-up.  Does anyone really need to spend their time speculating what the lineup will look like when Phase 3 of the Master Plan kicks in 2-3 years from now?  Maybe those are the people who need a pick me up if their lives are too vacant.  How does that saying go, if you want God to laugh, tell him your plans?  My friend who died in his early 60's around a month after his diagnosis and my colleague who just died at 51 when he seemed to be pretty healthy might have a lesson for us about "plans".  I'm trying to live in the present.

Don't get all realistic on me now, Alum, because there aren't enough electrons for me to list my maladies over the past decade.

My "joke" is that my body is in open rebellion against the rest of me.

I'm sorry for you and the loss of your friends. Sometimes, illness in a friend can be harder to take than your own.

You just did not sound like your usual self, and I was thinking that maybe  GW had some other "Alumnus" es coming here in your stead. I'm glad you're upbeat about the Buff. I hope the rest of life works out well, soon.

Ziik, I appreciate your good wishes and I wish you the best possible health as well.  I've been around people who are close to me for several years who have chronic health issues, and I have a little (I emphasize "little") more understanding than some people do about what life is like when you have limitations.  I know it's not easy.  I don't want to be dire about these things.  Looking forward is good and obviously necessary.  I just think there's too much looking past the present.   My main hobby these days is playing music with other people.  I used to sit there and wait for my turn to play a solo and ignore what the other soloists were playing.  Lately I find it's a lot better to listen to them and my time will come anyway.
