Smith Center Renovation
4/25/2008 2:49:00 PM
Poster: thinker

I just met with Dan Rocha, who is the head of Development for the Smith Center renovation.  There are a number of important points that came out of the meeting.

1)  Dr. Knapp is deeply commited to the project and he personally put together the $10 million deal with the Smith and Kogod families.

2)  Dan understands that there needs to be a significant change in culture with the entire athletic department at GW for this renovation effort to succeed.

3)  Dan is a very serious and determined guy who is going to do whatever has to be done to build up the program at GW.  And there are major changes coming down the pike.

4)  For all of those (including me) that have complained about how things are run AND want to be a part of the solution or have questions, you should contact Dan and he will give it to you straight - no nonsense - no bullshit.

5)  His email is: drocha@gwu.edu and he will talk to any serious GW basketball fan and lay out the plan.  He is also receptive to input.

6)   You can't complain that no one listens anymore until you talk to him.

Count on thinker for valuable, BS-free information. Nice job, man. Seriously.
I was thinking the other day (during the Final Four) that what separates us from the rest of the college basketball world is mouthy but cash-poor fans like me.
At Kansas, they write checks. At GW, we don't.
The buck stops here, and so does the team.
We really do overachieve.

Thinker, Sorry for asking, but I have not heard of him.  Do you know his background?  I am not in anyway doubting you, just interested in the guy who is heading this up.  Thanks for the info.

Mike K,

Like a ton of guys in alumni affairs and development he is new.  He started in May of last year.  He seems to have a relatively close relationship with Dr. Knapp.  He went to school at Penn and graduated from Temple.  He coached basketball in HS or AAU.  He clearly demonstrated to me that he understands what it will require to take GW athletics to a higher level.  He was etremely tough and pragmatic in talking about what kinds of changes have to occur if that is to happen.  He was very focused on the needed changes in the culture.  People are going to do things differently or they're going to have to move on.

When he talked about coaching basketball he talked about going into the game to win - by whatever means the letter of the rules allowed.  He isn't a guy that seems to be interested in just showing well.  He talked about winning and that in this project losing is not one of the options that he sees on the table.  He was a very persuasive guy.

But PLEASE don't take my word for it.  Contact him and talk to him and see for yourself.  drocha@gwu.edu

I think we can also epect a rollout of the effort soon with invites to season ticket holders and AD club members.  There is a pretty elaborate power point/slide presentation that they've put together and he intends to increase dramatically the communications between GW and the fan base.  He actually didn't ask for any money.  He said watch and see if we start to do things better and he'll be calling later when he's demonstrated that the school has changed course.  I've heard plenty of pitches in my lfe in many venues and he was impressive.  I think just what the doctor ordered.  And we'll see what happens.

I think this is great and take it as a positive sign that people in charge want to move forward to help make the university a first class institution!  On another note - with notta hater stirring the pot.  How is it that the owners of the Nationals seem to be going out of their way to include their alma mater in the new stadium (pre-season game, Luther Rice night etc.), but the owner of the Wizards seems to sit on his hands?

Mentz, I think KU's got plenty of "mouthy but cash-poor fans" as well.  A lot of the Bull Gators (big money folks at UF) I know aren't alums and just have more money than they know what to do with through inheritance or dumb (i.e. entrepreneurial) luck.  DC being a transient community just isn't flush with those kind of folks like Gainesville or Lawrence are.

Don't much care what Mr. Pollin does since he's cast his lot with the Hoyas. But kudos to the Lerners for their efforts in general and toward GW in particular.  Here's hoping the fans reciprocate...it was tough sitting through last night's game other than the fact that Olsen and Guzman are on my Strat-O-Matic team.

Abe Pollin ahs been etremely ill for quit some time, but with that being said he is and has always been a staunch supporter of his alma mater...He was actually going to be recognized this year by the university, but his illness prevented his presence and he did not want to be recognized in abstentia...

Also, where do you come up with the fact that his loyalties lie with the Hoya's?

Pollin has been a member of the GW board and I remember seeing him at the occasional game when I was a student (and both of us were MUCH younger). I think the "he is in with That School Down the Street" rep is because his buildings have hosted That School Down the Street's games while GW has toiled in Smith Center obscurity (of course, you can't fault the business sense behind that, not that it matters to some). That and GW students get no special breaks on ticket prices for Bullets or Caps games...

4/10/2008 12:19:00 PM
Poster: Poog

Never said his loyalties lay with the Hoyas...just that he cast his lot with the Hoyas. GWAA accurately captured my thought process behind that statement.  Pollin single-handedly made the Caps happen in this area and built the MCI/Verizon Center. I have absolutely nothing against him. But with the Lerners I see some GW love that I don't seem to see from Abe.

I am a big fan of Abe and Irene; their philanthropic commitment to Washington DC (and other broader based charity) is  beyond the comprehension of most.  The Lerner family has hardly demonstrated a similar commitment. It's not even close.  By the way, how do you like all those empty $300 seats at Nationals Park?  I think it's a disgrace that they've priced those seats that way....what a horrible message to send to DC, particularly after the city was held-up to pay for the stadium in the first place.  Unless they give them away, I bet the majority of them are empty for most of the games.

I hope this can stay at the top for a while until all the supporters, complainers and just fans contact Dan.

I plan to write to him and call him, here are some of the points I'm raising:

1.  Replace auiliary gym space behind main bleachers for new concourse, consisting of circulation space, bathrooms and concessions.  Food venues and a GW gift shop, along with trophy/display cases.  The walls should be covered with murals, plaques and other installations celebrating the history of GW athletics.

2.  Replace the cinder block walls behind the baskets with ground level seating.  Here and in the upper sections, try to increase overall seating capacity of Smith Center by at least 1,000.

3.  Up to date and epanded locker rooms and support facilities for teams and staff.

4.  Improvements to entrance areas and eterior.

What else?

4/14/2008 2:03:00 PM

Noo! Replace the cinder block walls with shark tanks! Remember?!

But on a more serious note, I would say altering the lighting so that the stadium isnt always kinda dark and maybe upgrading the video screen.  It doesnt need to be Nats stadium, but we arent going to impress anyone with a board that looks like it was installed in the 80s.

Scoreboard got updated appro 5 years ago.  I highly doubt this is one of the priorities of the renovation.

4/14/2008 2:54:00 PM
Poster: Poog

Other than not always being up to date with who's on the floor, GW's scoreboard is as good, and typically better, than the ones in every venue I've seen them play in.  Maybe the programming needs to be updated but I would think that's a user issue,

NJ - you forgot the Morton's Steakhouse some people want so they can enjoy a fine steak and their favorite bottle of Cabernet while watching the game.  I would like to see 1k in seating added, but at what point will that draw too much heat from the Communist Party of Foggy Bottom who will seek support from Norton and City Council to derail the renovation.

4/14/2008 7:13:00 PM
Poster: NJ Colonial

notta:

Etra seating capacity shouldn't be a problem - the new campus master plan calls for higher density development along 22nd Street, so epansion of the Smitty is consistant with this goal.  The new hospital, the Marvin Center epansion, three new residence halls and townhouse row, the HellWell, the law school epansion, the Media and Public Affairs bldg., the new Elliott School facility and the new B-school (Duques' Hall) ... all built despite neighborhood opposition to GW growth.

In all seriousness, I'm not sure the point is about what design you want in the building.  The point is to raise money to pay for a design that they already have.

Thinker - we should not think, just give money?  I haven't seen a plan yet.

You should think NJ Colonial, and then you should contact Dan Rocha.  We can all pretend we're King for a day and say what we want at the Smith Center.  The person to tell that to is Dan Rocha who has to raise the money for it.

Dan Rocha is not in charge of anything but helping to raise the $$$. You should all keep that in mind.

King for a day?  I'm a long-time season ticketholder, an alum with two GW degrees and a huge Colonials fan.  Why shouldn't us loyal fans make suggestions for a project we fully intend to support?  As members of the university community, we all have a right to speak up about matters affecting GW.

4/15/2008 4:19:00 PM

Of course you have that right NJ Colonial as you rightfully should.  It's just that you need to have that discussion with the GW people that can actually do something about it.

Truth is Truth,

Yes Dan is in charge of raising the money not the design.  AND if you want to kick in a big chunk of money I'll bet you can have some input on some of the design features.  Mostly I would guess that the basic design is done, though so the process now is about raising money for it.

Any Senior Class (graduating) members out there: I understand that the Class Gift to the University this year is going to be a Victory Bell, to be installed somewhere prominently on campus.  The first location that came to my mind was the University Yard, but how about incorporating a place for it in the renovated Smith Center - on the eterior, maybe at the corner of 22nd & G streets?  Could be part of the new design work.
