I got this email response from Damon Sayles, HS Basketball Reporter from the Dallas Morning News who "broke" the initial story last month on Matt Albritton's verbal to GW:

Sorry for the delay. Matt signed with GW on April 16.

He has nice touch from 3-point range, and he rebounds well as a 6-4 guard.
It'll be interesting to see just how well he performs in college. The level
of intensity will increase heavily after his seasons of playing private
school ball.

Not a super ringing endorsement.  I hope Matt starts playing some playground ball in DC and plays in the Kenner League so he can get an idea of what "public school" competition is about.

While he didn't play for a private school, I share a similar concern about Tony Taylor.  From all accounts on this board, he sounds like a great guy and there's no disputing his numbers which were great.  However, the concern is over the level of competition he played against which to be generous, wasn't great.  I truly hope that culture-shock doesn't set in for both Matt and Tony.

Tony Taylor plays for Stepinac HS in White Plains, NY.  Stepinac IS a private school, I attended White Plains HS.  Some of my Catholic friends went to Stepinac.

Below is a link to Stepinac's schedule.   No more Power Memorial, Mt. Vernon, White Plains on the schedule.  Tony, I hope, will be great for GW but the question always is - what level of ball did recruit play in HS.  That may have been the case with this year.  Let's hope Matt cah hit the 3, and Tony can play the point.

Newtman, thanks for the correction about TT playing at a private school.  The larger point, as you clearly picked up on, is that the caliber of competition he faced was nowhere near as strong as some of the heralded programs in that area.  Of course, the first time TT has a 15 point 7 assist game for GW, nobody will be thinking about his high school pedigree, myself included.  Let's hope we see that game in 2008.

Mentz, granted Diggs isn't a 235 pound stud playing the power forward or center position, but it's harsh to conclude that he doesn't have much of a post game.  His post moves are far more finesse than power, but Rob's turnaround jumper coming out of the post is a great weapon.

What many of you fail to realize is that a kid is not just recruited based on his high school participation. In Tony Taylor's case, he was seen over the Summer playing AAU ball against top flight competition. In Matt's case, since he didn't play AAU ball, the reference points were more limited to what he did in high school. That is much more rare but on its face not necessarily dispositive as Curry from Davidson has proven over the last two years. The converse works as well. Didn't Miles attend one of the top high schools in the country as far as competition?

It all comes down to this - who do you trust more: Hobbs' (and staff) eye for talent or some guy we don't even know who is trying to make a buck (recruiting rags)? I'm going with Hobbs everytime until proven otherwise.
