FYI: Vernon Macklin to transfer from G'town

TOTALLY idle speculation, but he would EACTLY what we are looking for to replace Diggs and he wouldn't have to relearn a new city!

Herve, I thought the very same thing when I read this in the paper.  No relocation epenses!  Gets to play in DC and put up the kind of numbers that he thought he'd have the chance to at Gtown.  As much as I detest the Hoyas, I'm not above snatching up their leftovers.

the problem with chasing an e-GU is that some of the players leave because the books have gotten to them as well - GU is very good at letting those kids go and letting them make statements that infer that the "system" that was not a good fit was the on-court system.  I would be interested to see where he lands.

Unless GU has the guts to play GW at the Smitty, Foggy Bottom is a no hoya zone.

Since we're talking about Vernon Macklin, I think it's fair to note that he has to be disappointed with his limited playing time over his first two seasons (he averaged less than 13 minutes a game this past season and 8.5 minutes over his last 12 games) and that with talented big men set to arrive as freshmen, his departure has everything to do with receiving more minutes elsewhere.  Regarding academics, unless you know for a fact that Vernon is struggling academically, I'd just as soon leave this out of the discussion.

4/24/2008 1:42:00 PM
Poster: curseofkangy

But don't we have a right to be told if he is struggling academically?  Where is Georgetown's transparency?  I find this loathsome and detestable that we can't be told all the reasons for his chosen departure.

4/24/2008 1:47:00 PM
Poster: alum1

To Mailvan's point, it's none of our business why he left unless he or the school decides they want us to know.  It's a private institution and they're under zero obligation to tell you anything.

Having said that, I think it's fair game to speculate about it if you want to.  It's just as much speculation to say he left for reasons of playing time (which I believe) as anything esle.  Speculation is speculation.  But don't pretend that we're "owed" an eplanation about his academic standing.  We're not.

I thought I made it somewhat clear that my tongue was firmly in cheek, but perhaps not.  You know, regarding the departure of a member of our men's team towards the end of this last season...

Figured you would jump on that one, since it disn't require any original thought, "Thinker."  I don't like you're new name, by the way.  I would have gone with something more simple.  One word only.  Like "Jackass."

I did not mean to say he was struggling.  I only meant to convey that when kids leave GU it is not always the court issue.  JT was very good about letting the athlete indicate why he was leaving.  Sometimes it's not that they are failing, it's the eacting standards GU puts on them, i.e. monitoring class participation, etra mandatory study halls etc., the kids burn out and want a more ideal college atmosphere that they see some of the other kids on campus enjoying.  A question rears its head when the biggest thing that kept Macklin on the bench is leaving -Hibbert - and he then says he is leaving too when objectively he would seem to have a fair shot of taking the spot over - in a darn good conference.

Something for almost everyone...curseofkangy, it didn't go over my head one bit...it just wasn't the slightest bit funny.  Or, it completely misrepresents my position on the Rice situation, which is a different situation to begin with.  Not once did I ever post that we had a RIGHT to know why Reece was dismissed from the team.  My position was simply that the program should be more forthright in communicating things like this to their supporters/followers.  And, I was consistent in agreeing with the fact that I understood if the school was legally bound not to publicly discuss this (to obviously abide by the law).  However, I continue to remain unconvinced of this.

Alum1, you can't be as naive as you appear.  Speculation is speculation, it doesn't matter what it's about?  How about what it's based on?  FACT: Macklin was a Parade and McDonalds All-American coming out of high school.  FACT: He did not average playing more than 13 minutes a game in either of his two seasons here.  FACT:  Two very heralded high school seniors, Greg Monroe and Henry Sims, are playing for Georgetown net season and since they play the same or similar positions to Macklin, there was a realistic possibility that Macklin would not have significantly increased his minutes net season even with Hibbert leaving.  Now, let's look at the facts surrounding why he may realistically be leaving due to academics.  Wait, I don't know any of these facts, do you?  Assuming you don't, this makes my point that Notta's comments may pertain to Georgetown in the past (and aside from Egleston who is now at Delaware, I'm not sure who else this applies to) but that there are no available facts to specifically support the notion that Macklin is leaving due to academics.  Therefore, it's pretty unfair to the player to raise this notion based on virtually nothing.

Poster: alum1

geez mailvan, hate to see what kind of diatribe you'd go on if i actually disagreed with you.  actually, as i pointed out, i tend to agree with you that it's probably all about playing time.  but i certainly do think that people are free to speculate otherwise all they want.  if you want to take it to the net level, i suppose he could have been so weighed down by the academic situation that it affected his playing and that led to less playing time, no?  i wouldn't believe that myself, but it's perfectly reasonable that people be able to speculate on that all they want here on -- drumroll please -- a message board..

4/24/2008 4:58:00 PM
Poster: mailvan

Alum1, I recognize that we were in agreement over playing time being the reason for the transfer but that's not what I was addressing.  Where we are in disagreement is over the notion that people here should be free to speculate about anything in any manner.  Not if the speculation is derogatory in nature and lacks any real basis to begin with.  Speculating that Macklin can't cut it academically at Georgetown would certainly be derogatory in nature.  And, the discussion would be different if someone had an actual reason to believe that he was flunking courses, missing classes, etc.  But to suggest that he's leaving over academics for no other reason than because others have left Georgetown for this reason is entirely unfair to Macklin.

4/24/2008 5:02:00 PM
Poster: alum1

Actually, I agree it's unfair.  I guess where we will forever differ (respectfully hopefully) is that I'm of the mind that in this forum people should be free to speculate on or epress whatever opinion they want, and we shouldn't be telling anyone what they should or shouldn't.  Fair game to disagree as strongly as you want. Just my humble opinion.

My alum1,

Since this is ---- drumroll --------- a message board where people should be free to speculate about anything regardless of whether it's fair or not, let's speculate about you.  Hmmmm I wonder why you are so belligerent on this board?  I wonder why you like to call people names?  Anger issues?  Relationship problems?  I wonder why you are so resistant to actually making smart arguments?  Are you unemployed or unsuccessful in love or finances?  Anger toward men?  Hmmmm . . . Gay?  That's OK, nothing wrong with being gay.  My best friend from college is gay.  Yeah I think you might be gay.  Of course I can't really base that on anything specific and I don't care if you're gay or not since I don't have any problem with gay people and who cares because everyone is free to speculate about anything regardless of fairness or relevance because this is a messge board.

To get this back on track, can we all agree that we all (or most of us) hate the cowardly Georgetown Hoyas?

This guy had good size and some games where he scored decently. His size is especially welcome.

I would be leery of transfers as we seem to have gotten burned (Middleton or whoever he was who never stepped on court, to say the least or Cheyenne who was an ACC starter, but can't even complete a dunk for us without clanking it off the rim in his eternal quest for style points.

On the other hand, Spoon panned out well, though unfortunately it seems lil 'bro was eposed to the team's dysfunction this year.

Rather get a JUCO (who believes in schoolwork) who is eligible to be an immediate disappointment than a transfer who takes an etra year to display failed epectations.

But when I saw it in the paper, I thought the same thing as Herve: despite  his evil current team, this guy's certainly worth thinking about.

Let's get this back on track with an interesting poll question.  Assuming we will have room for Mackin in 2009-10 and assuming that his game is very much along the lines of what GW could use (a big, athletic player who can run the court and provide an inside presence), would you want GW to "recruit" him or are you of the mindset that any former Hoya is not welcome at GW?  I'll cast the first vote by saying that as much as I can't stand Georgetown, I'd love to see Macklin in a GW uniform.

How crazy would it be to the GW psyche if we took a transfer from GTown?  Personally, I'd jump at the chance since GTown is now a re-established national program.  However, think about the students who attended GW because they didn't get into GTown or feel GW is less prestigious an institution.  Can you imagine the smack GTown students could talk if we took their table scraps?

Again, personally I could care less.

for the record, we have taken at least two transfers from maryland (magid and karver) and at least two from navy (nordmann and hopkins).  at least one gw player transferred to howard (rene harry, who never played at gw) and i seem to recall another.

a gw coach moved to gtown and a gtown player is now a gw coach (or whatever you call lockhart).

this is no big deal, but, given the numbers (scholarship limits), can it even happen?

for those who doubt the value of transfers, I offer the following list  (no jucos that would be a different list), all of whom contributed to gw:  bob tallent, bob lindsey, bob nordmann, byron hopkins, brian magid and, yes, regis kounjia

Bill Brigham who accompanied Mike Jarvis from BU and was mentioned elsewhere has to be the #2 transfer into GW behind Bob Tallent.  Diggs would look a lot different inside if he had a skilled solidly-built forward like Brigham on the floor with him.

You guys may not want Vernon Macklin. He seems to be VERY similar to Regis Koundjia meaning a 6-9-ish very athletic, highly touted prep player who failed to live up to epectations in college. In my opinion, V.Macklin and R.Koundjia were guys who were able to dominate high school and AAU ball because of their height and spectacular athleticism, they never worked on the fundamentals of the game(post moves, catching the ball) and they were eposed in college.
