Ryan Roberson - Triple A Toledo Mud Hen -- Great Start

Roberson who in the past has had some rough starts to the season, seems to have really worked on his pitch management. The bad news is that he is backed up behind 3 guys who can play first in the Tigers organization. On the other hand, they are good enough to all be in Detroit, giving him a promotion to AAA Toledo.

Right now, Ryan is hitting .318, but seems to be working on contact and the results are there. He had been a power hitter who, when he was hot, would just tear things up, but with that came some cold streaks and strike outs. He is sitting on at least an 11 game hitting streak with only a handfull of doubles, but what he has done is make contact and draw walks. Amazingly, hitting down in the order, he is sitting there with more walks than strike outs.

Of course, it isn't unusual for someone to be hitting in the 300's at this point of the season, but it is interesting to note how he is doing it. We all know that stats can lie about true intent of a hitter, but you have to like the numbers, none the less. Ryan has proved in the past that he can string together multi-hit games. Right now, in 11 games, he has only two (yesterday and 11 games ago). What I like is that, if he can keep this up, a guy with his size and speed who can protect the plate can be a perfect cover hitter for a star at the major league level.

For comparison's sake, last year, Ryan played in 7 games at Toledo, in those games he struck out 7 times. In the last 10 games, he is sitting with 6 strikeouts and 7 walks (last year, he had no walks). His OBP is in the 385 range. If he can stay near that point, Ryan will be major league bait sooner than later. If the Tigers are backed up at first base, they will pull a trade to shore up some other area.

After three or four series, reality starts to set in with clubs. They know that what they have isn't cutting it. Best wishes to Ryan as the temps start to rise and the ball starts to fly. Those hard singles might squirt through to the fence and those long fly outs may drift over the fence.

Thanks for the update.  Enjoyed watching him play at Barcroft and his ever-present family in the stands.  1B is an easy position to get buried in but it would be great if he could get that cup of coffee and turn it into a long and productive meal.

Hitting Streak grows by a game. Sense of guilt that I could have caused the end of a streak is no more. Of course, Roberson did find a way to fan 3 times. ... what the heck.
