The Hatchet On The Schedule
6/15/2009 12:37:00 PM
Poster: Section 105

Here is the Hatchet's story on the men's and women's basketball schedule:  http://media.www.gwhatchet.com/media/storage/paper332/news/2009/06/11/Sports/Basketball.Schedules.Take.Shape-3747325.shtml?reffeature=htmlemailedition.

Although Kvanz refused to confirm meeting Navy in the BB&T, there was an item about it in the Post this morning.  Personally, although I like Navy as an opponent, it drops GW's stock a bit as they play another mid-major rather than the usual major big conference teams.

Better teams will play us now because we are a guaranteed win for them.   We meet Navy in the BB&T.    We still appear to have difficulty even filling out a schedule.  The prospects of making our conference tournament where 12 of 14 teams go are not very good.  We went an entire season unable to put even 3000 people into a 5000 seat arena even once.  We lose to the likes of Longwood and Coppin State.  We have become American University...from 5 years ago.  Today we can only aspire to be Amercan University of the present.  Not that long ago, we were on top of the world.  If any program is looking for a manuel on how to run a program into the trash heap as quickly as possible need to go no further than Foggy Bottom.  (If indeed the schedule is completed by mid June but for the contract signing and it is not the full 13 OOC games...)

The HATCHET story shows the UNC Wilmington game as November 15 and the East Carolina game as November 22. Unless I'm misreading my calendar, those would be consecutive Sundays. Does that seem likely? I don't recall a whole lot of GW games on Sundays.

"There will be no GW Thanksgiving Classic this year."

Did anyone here know that we had one?  Honestly, I had no idea that they were billing whatever uninspiring opponent we played as part of a "Classic" - at least since we got rid of the Red Auerbach Classic years ago.

Nevermind.  Apparently it was the women who played a Thanksgiving Classic. DIdn't know that either, but I don't follow as carefully so I could have easily missed that.

One piece of constructive criticism for Dan Greene, though -- you missed one of the single most important questions: Since JK is saying that "for practical purposes we're done... We just don't have the signed contracts" are the men planning to play 13 games this year or have they given up again?

The schedule is better. A lot better. So by formula, the team must be worse. A lot worse.
10 wins might be a struggle.

Jack Kvancz has become a combination of Arthur Carlson, Larry Tate and Michael Scott rolled into one.  Scheduling major conference teams isn't done on a whim.  You have to be persistent (you know, wait your turn for 9 years).  You have to give up something to get something.  We can't get anyone good to come to our small gym, but now we can get teams due to the renovations (despite the gym size remaining the same).  Seriously, this man has become a complete caricature.  With each of his quotes, I no longer know whether to laugh or cry.

FQ, I think the "classic" took a hit because of the NCAA rules on tournaments - I think it would count as two games and even schools like Columbia, Teas Southern,  SUNY _______, do not want to waste games.  If that does not work, then I suggest that Red took the torunament with him to make sure they will not tarnish his name anymore.

I don't know whether the size of our arena is that important to some major schools that have (or hope to have) recruits from this area. For the women, as an eample, Tennessee's first visit was because Kara Lawson was from this area and it was a deserved homecoming.  There would of course be schools that could benefit by side events such as alumni gatherings.  Certainly Virginia Tech and West Virginia would benefit from stirring up their Beltway base.  In conclusion, I think using arena size as an ecuse for non-scheduling might be overstated.

Ah, so November and December aren't the same month? Looks like I need a refresher course in reading comprehension. Thanks for the information, Mentzinger.

Back to my original question: a SUNDAY game against UNC Wilmington?

While the sunday games would allow GW to avoid the thorny issue of playing on during Shabat, the conflict with 'Skins games seems pretty self-defeating, unless the AD thinks that by the time hoops season rolls around the 'Skins will be so out of playoff contention that their bandwaggon fans will have free time on their hands...

Ross-Man is right about Tech and West Virginia but those were just eamples of schools that have large local alumni groups.  Let's try Penn State as a better eample of a school that lots of local alumni but no regular local venue.

"They are who we thought they were" - Dennis Green

Each time a new article comes out, posters have a pavlovian refle which requires a repetition of all things said perhaps 1000 before. There hasn't been a novel thought on this board for many months regarding the OOC schedule. This board used to have some insight and some reasoned debate 6-8 years ago. Now it is nothing but a "bitch" session designed to continually bring up past scheduling offenses, assign blame and remind everyone how much smarter the poster thinks he is than the powers that be. If Kvancz and Hobbs resigned tomorrow, some of you guys would think it was great until you realized that you would then have nothing to talk about here (at least for awhile). Even as someone who is inclined to agree that schedule needed major fiing from the past, the constant drone and invective just turns off a number of people who might otherwise be sympathetic to the cause. While your cause may be just, the messenger and tactics are killing the message.  As soon as some of you figure that out you might actually see some real change because senior GW administration will stop viewing this board as it currently does (a near-comedic collection of know-it-alls, whiners and non-contributors who haven't earned the credibility necessary to call for anyone's job). Fair or unfair, real people, real money and real concerns get attention. Drive-by internet rantings go into the ash heap of not serious. So if you want to affect real change you might want to spend less time repeating your wit and wisdom here and find a way to present your concerns in an organized and coherent fashion to those that actually matter.

I'm suitably chastened.

How many people will co-sign this letter:

Dear Mr. Kvancz,

A game like Oregon State, with the added attraction that the President or his family might attend, which has the potential to be a public relations coup for the program, falls into your lap, and it gets scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend, when many students and other potential attendees will be out of town or otherwise tied up.  Please tell us if anything could have been done to play the game at a better time, and if not, whether you care.  Thanks.

Alumnus, count me in.

Seneca, what this site ought to be is a vehicle for the basketball program to monitor what's on the minds of their students, fans and paying customers.  I'm convinced that this site has served this purpose in the past, like when reserved seating privileges were going to be removed from endzone seating only to be reinstated.  Or when unused tickets were organized by GWIslander and donated to charitable groups.  And yes, it's also a site where individuals may vent, sometimes out of frustration and sometimes just to be entertaining.

Had people done things your way by approaching KH, JK, Dom, Dr. Chernak, etc. and indicating how dissatisfied they've been with the schedule the past 5 years or so, do you really believe that we would have seen a more competitive schedule in any of these years?  Do you really believe that making our feelings known in person would have made any difference?  I'd have to say you're very naive if you really believe this.

It would be insane for the basketball program to ignore this site.  Then again, I recall JK once mentioning that he didn't know how to work a computer.  So I suppose anything's possible.

I am glad that we have the opportunity to provide comic relief for the administration.  If this board does not truly reflect the sentiment of the fan base, then the administration can turn to the other shills and yes men (and the money doners) for their pats on the back and epressions of "job well done".  If in fact we are playing a full schedule this year, given the upgrade (I saw no preseason top 25 or even top 50 teams on the OOC schedule), I will give the AD credit.  However, the articles that were posted suggest that this is not a certainty.  If you wish to criticize because comments made were premature, that is fair.  However, to state that this is an old issue...well it is an old issue, but sadly it remains a current problem, and if the administration does not want to hear how unhappy the fan base is, well that is kind of sad.

Alumnus,

GW gets a home game with a BCS program in Oregon State, add in a possible appearance by POTUS, and you're bitching about the timing of it?

Really?

Maybe that was the only time OSU could make it out to the East coast.  Maybe Craig Robinson would only agree to this if he could spend Thanksgiving with the Obamas.  Maybe this is the only time Michelle knew she was going to be in town.

Who cares?  It's a home game vs Oregon State.  Take it and say thank you.

And if there's even an hint of THE ONE gracing the Smith Center with his royal presence, there will be no shortage of devotes of OBOMANATION to prostrate themselves in front of HIS devine being.

The game will be a sell out (just like Obama) :)

Bobo, you're a turd.  You criticize me for wanting GW to get something out of the game and you throw in two completely gratuitous slurs about Obama?  Do you have an eight-year old who feeds you puns on Obama's name?  Have a great weekend.

I'm okay with my comments going on the Internet ash heap despite the nice scolding.

Perhaps the administration is taking stock of its dwindling fan base (honestly, pretty much just us) and trying to put together a real schedule. We'll see if we don't have a full slate of games, like say 330 or so other NCAA Divison I schools.

That would prompt some well-deserved bitching and perhaps an even greater lack of season ticket renewals along with the lectures about us few dedicated fans not being sufficiently whatever,

Gee Seneca....maybe we should stage a sit in?  Or sign petitions?  Or some other remnant of the 70's and 80's.  This is the age of the blog.  If you don't like it, stop posting here.  Maybe we'll even notice you're gone.

As for the game on Thanksgiving weekend, it makes all the sense in the world.  Gives the President's brother-in law a chance to spend Thanksgiving day with the first family for their first t-day in the White House.  That's usually how these things happen.  And there ain't nothing wrong with that.
