Actually a 2012.  Looks like he's on track to being an elite recruit.

Jamal Lewis, 6’1” sophomore guard – As the tourney bore on, Lewis improved, helping carry DC Assault Gold (16U) to the 17u championship. He’s athletic, a competitor, and by continuing to develop is becoming the point guard many envision when comparing him to e-NBA player Kevin Johnson.

Hard to imagine someone from Sidwell Friends and at that size being a true midlevel D-1 prospect, but the upside would be presumably not worry about academics or the Post coming back and saying his prep school wasn't good enough.

I do not want to be a downer for GW bc my degree has GW on it, however, if the guy is at Sidwell and can play, he aint headed to GW.  Think long and hard.  If your son could sign with any school in the land, any school - would you really convince him to sign at GW?

    notta, BigFan,

Sidwell isn't a bad team and they are very young. I had the very good fortune to sit net to another Sidwell soph and his mom at dinner last month. You are right, the kids are very smart and great team players. These kids have great background and good support. In my case, both mom and dad played D1 ball. They run the Princeton offense in their backyard (joke, but they can talk a 1-4 attack).

The best part? They attack the press.

Finally, on the school, it isn't as easy as one would think for kids to get into elite programs, such as Harvard.

The guys also don't see themselves in the elite university bo. Lewis and this other kid play in Summer programs that are pretty aggressive. Once you get to college, you pretty much are responsible for the quality of your own education. A school like GW actually benefits from a smarter recruit and knowledgeable parents.

I'd say, the biggest problem is that GW is right here in town. You can walk to GW's campuses from Sidwell (in town) in 35 minutes. (of course, Tuna Can reminds me that you shouldn't walk along Fohall Rd as you will most certainly be struck by a speeding vehicle and get launched into someone's tennis court). Most kids want at least a bit of distance. BUT, as we are finding, not at the epense of ending up in Blacksburg. That's the pen.

my remarks were not a slap at Sidwell or the program.  I played in the league which Sidwell orginated -- the IAC and I have had relatives start on the hoops team for Sidwell as early as 1973.  My point is Sidwell, Landon, St. Albans, St. Stephens, Prep, Bullis, Potomac etc. are elite schools.  The conversations at lunch are not just about sports and the kids are likely to want a ton of things in a school - including living away from the watchful eye of their parents and being with other friends and peers.  There are a ton of Bucknells, Holy Crosses, Cornells, Penns, Dartmouths, Browns, Colgates, UVa's, Wakes, Northwesterns, Stanfords, Rices, UNCs, Dukes, Cals, Vandys, BCs, ND's, W&M's, Michigans, UCLA's, that fit the bill and permit a person to get a hoops program and an education that he prefers that do not start with George.

notta, I don't think that you are wrong, but it often is very simple. GW is an attractive school, but not for local kids. I had to laugh that you listed one of the schools that had mom holding her head. The main point about sophs are that they are growing and who knows what position they will ultimately fit.

(or in the spirit of the "new" Virginia, if you go to church or not)

If you're not seriously dreaming about that elusive pro career, why wouldn't you choose academics first and athletics second? Pro scouts will still find you if you turn out to be far better than the league you're playing in.

Blackberry do not make me a snob about GW (which although I may be wrong I think is the only school in the A-10 which sniffed the top 50 in US News and World Report), but outside of GW in the A-10 which school would you see as a "peer" of Holy Cross, Lehigh, Lafayette, USMA, USNA, Bucknell, or Colgate?  Temple?  LaSalle? UMass? Duquesne? St. Joe's? Charlotte? - oh wait St. Bonaventure?  You are talking about an elite group of DC area private schools that use schools like these as safety schools - maybe.  The lunch room conversations at these schools include: "Hey did you make it to Senator 's pool party last weekend?"  "Is your Dad going to race this summer out of Annapolis or Newport?"  "Congratulate your mom on being named to the Supreme Court for me."  They have three and four kids in private high schools at the same time at $28k per kid.  For crying out loud the Gores, Bushes, Clintons and Obamas all have direct connections to those last schools from either attending, having a sibling attend or sending a child to those schools.  They aint aiming to go to URI, they want to go to Brown - they get that they may not be headed to the Pistons.

ESPN has him as a combo/shooting guard - rated 88

    Jamal Lewis

    Shooting Guard

    CLASS: 2012

    88

    SCOUTS GRADE
    Grading Scale

    • Washington, DC Hometown
    • Sidwell Friends SchoolHigh School
    • 6'0"Height
    • 165 lbsWeight
    • 31Position Rank
    Strengths:

An athletic, scoring combo guard. He is a playmaker that can create for himself and others. He shoots a variety of shots and can run them off when he catches hot. He played more off guard in this event but showcased his point guard skills with his ability to play off a ball screen and set up his teammate for a bucket in transition or spotting up. Jamal slashes to the basket and adjusts well off of contact to complete the play.

    Weaknesses:
At times he can get sped up or hold the ball to long that leads him into turnovers.

    Bottom Line:
Lewis displayed excellent lateral foot speed on defense and plays with great urgency on both ends. Lewis is capable of big scoring numbers when he gets into the flow.
