GW 2010 newest signee Chris Fitzgerlad

According to Northstar Basketball Report:

Chris Fitzgerald '10 of Northfield Mt. Hermon School (MA) has committed to George Washington

Per the New England Recruiting Website:

A skilled face-up four man with a deadly three-point stroke, the Massachusetts native will have a definite niche at the net level stretching opposing defenses and being particularly effective trailing the break and playing in pick and pop action.

I'm sorry but this better be a walkon situation. I hear you all when you say kids develop and all that but this kid is NOT A GOOD ATHLETE WHO AVERAGED 7 POINTS PER GAME IN HIGH SCHOOL. To think we have Jon Lloyd and Eric McKnight possibly coming in, I'm not happy wasting a scholarship here. I'm sure the kid can shoot but there has been no indication he can do anything else. You can find shooters at HelWell who are paying to go here

Maybe it's because I've been listening to too much Shanahan speak this off-season, but I'm enthused about the two signings thus far.  "Competition at every position."  Fitzgerald and Mikic will have to fight each other for their minutes but could be two huge (6'7/8) assets to open up lanes and mid-range games for the 7 odd players who have had to rely more on individual slashing/penetrating, particularly Ware, Smith, Bynes, Pellom, & Johnson.  Their ability to drive combined with new possible options from deep could also help the streaky range of Kromah and Taylor.  The offense was really seemed to click early in the few games Hollis started hot from deep.  Manage to get one or two of those runs per game and we could keep a few games closer or pull further ahead in the close ones.  Hopefully net year's 3HM (Katuka, Edwards, Warren) can take another step forward and command even more respect down low allowing FM (FitzgeraldMikic) some additional mobility.

“Rick Pitino told me that Mike Marra was the best shooter he’s ever seen and Chris is right on par with that,” Carroll said.  “Chris won five games for us this year.  He had 25 points versus South Kent, 26 against Blair, and huge shots in three others…Plus he is an awesome kid.”

Maybe he's best friend's with NMH's big man Majok Majok.   From watching a couple of those videos, that guy looks awesome.   BCS teams are all over him, but from what I read, he is strongly considering Harvard and maybe even Fordham anyway because academics are really important to him.  Seems to me, we can offer better academics and basketball than Fordham, so maybe Fitzgerald can help us land the big man.

I'm obviously just making that up, but Fitzgerald didn't look too impressive in those brief highlights, while Majok Majok sure did.

Seriously. All jokes aside, can somebody eplain why we should be ecited about this? All we've heard is some random New England web site as well as his schools saying he's a good shooter. The KID HARDLY FREAKING PLAYED FOR HIS HIGH SCHOOL. I don't care if you went to Oak Hill, that's weak. It's not like he's known as being athletic and having untapped potential. The more I think about it it pisses me off. Maybe we'll wake up tomorrow and find out this is a big joke or at the very least we didn't blow a scholarship here.

*Sparknotes- If we have to fight off Quinnipiac, Hofstra and the Ivies for kids who didn't play for their high school team than what the fuck are we doing in the A10???

As if this day in College Basketball wasn't newsworthy enough, reports now coming out that say Greg McDermott is leaving the Big12 and Iowa to move back to the Missouri Valley to coach Creighton. This, would certainly, put Eric McKnight's commitment there in jeopardy, so stay tuned on that situation.

How could we use a great shooter????  GW shot 33% from the 3 last year.  Only Hollis and Kromah made more than 19 3's for the whole year.  GW was 305th last year in terms of the percentage of their points that came from 3's.  Trust me - we would have won a bunch more games if we had a couple of more guys that could shoot 3's.

I don't know if this guy will be good.  He clearly is a late bloomer and not the type of player that gets much love from the rating services.  But the fact that the Ivies want him . . . Given that the Ivies now want to compete in basketball - see Cornell, Princeton, and Harvard and I'm not sure why competing with the Ivies is that horrible of a thing.

Competing with the Ivies is a terrible thing when it comes to recruiting.. They Don't offer athletic scholarships, you need better scores to get in there. The fact is late bloomer or not, what gives anybody any impression that this kid can play at a high d1 level. And I'm sorry the A10 is now a high Division 1 basketball league

Good thing we can determine his suitability for D-1 play in the A-10 based on never having seen him play or knowing how the coaching staff envisions using him. Even if he doesn't pan out as hoped, every college and pro team signing and drafting players has misses on their record.  Does anyone really think that GW doesn't need an outside shooting presence or another taller body to provide a different look and option inside?  Seems like Cornell had a pretty decent season last year, but according to the scouting services, Fitzgerald didn't quite meet their academic profile. We're just not going to get too many guys above the radar screen so a couple of late shots in the dark below the radar screen doesn't seem so wrong.

Poster: Long Suffering Fan

Without condeming the recruit sight unseen, all we know about him is he appears to have been recruited eclusively by lower level basketball programs (yes, the Ivies are improving, but they are not the A-10) and for a so-called scorer, 7 points per game in HS is not very impressive.  Given the recruiting failures of the school of late, the collective groan we are hearing from the faithful appears to be well justified.   I hope we are all wrong.  (Is there anythng less valuable than a dead eye.3 point shooter who cannot get his shot off?)

The program could save a tremendous amount of money by slashing the recruiting budget to zero. Hobbs and the assistants will be happy too. No more trips to schools and AAU tournaments across the land to evaluate players. Damn, if only GW had this information before.

I think this is the third recruit whose description talked about him being effective in "pick and pop" offenses.  Now all we need is to set a pick.  It seems like GW only has recruited players who are allergic to setting picks for shooters.  Of course, they're probably only running the "offense" that the coaches have installed.

Is there anyone who has more of a vested interest in making correct decisions regarding GW recruits these days than Karl Hobbs?  Do you realize how easy it would be for KH to keep focusing on recruiting athletes between 6'3" and 6'8" who are long, lean and can run the floor?  Obviously, there is a tremendous need to improve our perimeter shooting and KH and staff are smart enough to realize this.  Could it backfire?  Of course it can..from an inability to fulfill a role within KH's defenses to a failure to get one's shot off in time.  However, critics of this decision, which seems totally based on either the player's scoring average in high school or the other schools that were offering, are completely missing the boat on this.  We are filling a gigantic need here and credit should go to the coaching staff for understanding the importance of this.  By the way, there are a ton of 20 point scorers in high schools throughout the country who will never see the light of day in a Division1 college basketball game, if that makes you feel any better.

GW, before any recruits this year, has

4 guards- Johnson, Bynes, Taylor, Kromah.
3 centers-  Warren, Katuka, Edwards.  Two of them I have hope for.
2 slashers- Smith and Ware
1 power forward - Pellom

It seems to me that the position "lacking" is power forward, especially considering the jury is still out on Pellom.  So to bring in Mikic and Fitzgerald adds depth to a position where GW previously has little depth.  Maybe all 3 stink.  Maybe 2 of the 3 are good.  Sure- he wasn't highly recruited, but so be it.  If it's a hit- great.  If it's a miss, it provides a little bit of depth at a position that needs it.

Two words: Gordon Hayward.
No, I'm not comparing the two. I'm just saying guys like Mikic and Fitzgerald can ecel if put in the right system and coached up. And our need for deep shooters should be obvious.
There have been enough recruiting weirdnesses at GW lately to merit some concern. But for those of you fretting because, based on the recruiting services we haven't recruited Jason Kidd's clone, get over it.

4/26/2010 11:21:00 AM

PF is an area of need for GW, but I think there's a question of whether these recruits fill that need.  Are Fitzgerald and Mikic PFs in name only? The reports are that they are both thin, rather unathletic players defensively and strickly perimiter shooters offensively with no inside game or ability to get to the hole.

Hollis was also a perimeter player as a PF, but he was also a very good rebounder, could score down low and block shots.  Doesn't appear that Fitzgerald or Mikic help out anywhere else but outside shooting.  Mikic seems to have more promise but there's a question of his actual size (is he really only 6'4" as posters here claim?).

Alumnus' question still stands: When has Hobbs' offense ever set screens and picks to free up these types of set shooters? If these kids don't get picks set for them, it's really had to see either succeeding at GW.

Why stop at Gordon Hayward comparisons?  Larry Bird was a white, jump shooting forward from Indiana too.

Gordon Hayward reportively received offers at Purdue and Michigan.  Fitzgerald did not.  Other than skin color, these players have very little in common.

You people aren't getting it. Sure there's a possibility that he'll pan out. But stop comparing our offensive scheme to Butler or even a team like Richmond. The fact is we need athletes. Shooters are great and it seems like Nemanja is a shooter who's also an athlete so I love that pickup. This other kid is not. As for needing help at the power forward position, what good is having a power forward who stands at the three point line the whole game. Pellom doesn't have a post up game but at least he can rebound and finish above the rim. If anything a 6'8 "three point epert" is a stretch three.

Here's my ultimate complaint. We're not gonna get the all americans and that's fine. But it's disheartening to see even Fordham bringing in better classes than us. Cornell had a great year this past year because they were all seniors and had a fantastic coach. Our programs are not comparable otherwise in history as well as where we play. Compare avier's Justin Martin with Chris Fitzgerald and see how big a disparity there is.

bobo-

of course they are power forwards in name only.  But I can't tell you any PF who played with Hobbs that had an inside presence.  Omar played at the top of the key or outside on the perimeter.

If we count Diggs as a PF, he'd be the only one.  So if Hobbs offense isn't going to run with a PF for the inside, having guys to fill that void won't do much good.

I just want to be clear -- I watched several of the youtube videos posted of his team.  My impression is based just on those, which is decidedly limited, not based on who else recruited him or what his scoring average was.  I'm also one of the people who has said we need better shooters (and a better offense that frees up those shooters).

That said, I am ecited about Mikic, but not so much about this kid (but I'll be rooting like crazy to be proven wrong).

In the brief clips, Mikic looked fluid and savvy and had a quick release.  Also seemed to have reasonable quickness.

In the clips I watched, Fitzgerald looked fairly slow.  His release didn't seem all that quick (it wasn't slow or anything, it just didn't jump out at me as a quick release -- maybe more like a Collucci-speed release than a Kromah.).  He's not even on the court for most of the baskets in the 3 or 4 videos I watched (and when he is on the court, whether he's the one shooting or not, he's virtually always just hanging around the 3 point line, and never seems to be aggressive going to the glass.  Even on the one blocked shot by Majok Majok I saw, Fitzgerald is standing in the paint, looking a little lost).

Again, I have seen very little -- just 50 or 60 of his team's baskets on youtube, very few of which he was even on the court for -- so I'm definitiely not qualified to judge.

But unless Hobbs was inspired by Cornell and St. Mary's and is adjusting his offense to put shooters in better position, I'm in the group that considers this a head scractcher, despite saying we need more shooters.

DanJ:

You said that Fitzgerald and Mikic add depth to the position GW is most in need.  What position is that?  If these recruits aren't PF on offense or defense, where do they fit in?  Phellom is at least a good rebounder and shot blocker on defense.  Doesn't look like Fitz or Mik contribute those catagories or add any bulk down low.

So what PF skill do they add?  That being said, I still like Mikic as he appears to have a more complete game and has been more productive on the court.

I don't know DEA - here's Fordham's class so far:

2010  Player Commits
NAME POS HT WT SCHOOL RANK GRADE STATUS NOTES
Jayon James Small Forward 6-5 225 Paterson Catholic H.S. (NJ) SF #34 90 Verbal
Branden Frazier Point Guard 6-2 180 Bishop Loughlin Memorial H.S. (NY) PG #94 84 Verbal  Player has Decommitments
Danny Lawhorn Point Guard 5-10 150 South Kent School (CT) PG #145 78 Verbal  Player has Decommitments

I'll bet that Mikic turns into a better player than James (who was being recruited by Cornell BTW) and if we get Loyd - he'll definitely be better than either of Frazier or Lawhorn.  There's a question of whether we can still get McKnight and Jelani Hewitt still is listed as considering GW.   Recruiting isn't done yet - don't despair just yet.

Also, NOBODY plays 13 players.  It certainly makes sense to me to take an occasional chance on a good kid who may turn out to be a good contributor. Again, I know NOTHING about Fitzgerald.  But he played in perhaps the top prep league in the country and Hobbs recruits in that league etensively.  So at this point I'm prepared to say that the coaching staff must have seen something in this kid that they liked.  People have over learned the Matt Allbrittain eperience.  The story has been repeatedly told - Collucci saw him, called Hobbs, and offered him on the spot.  Obviously he wasn't a DI player.  Collucci made a mistake.  That doesn't mean every white kid who is a shooter will be Allbrittain.

And to build on MV's point - do you really think that Hobbs doesn't have 1000% more at stake than us fans???  You can't have a team full of Cheyanne Moores, Montrell MacDonalds, and Miles Beattys.

Thinker,

True that no team plays 13 players, but that is the total number of scholarships available.  With Fitz signed, GW is down to just 1 more this year.  If they do sign Loyd, I would hate to lose the ability to sign McKnight and Jelani Hewitt because Fitzgerald has their spots.

They also only have 1 available so far for 2011 as well - and filled it already with Erik Copes.  Obviously kids transfer out but it just seems that Mikic and Fitzgerald are competing for just 1 spot in the lineup (the thin, unathletic, set shooting PF spot).  It's very hard to see the more athletic, defensive oriented players like D Pellom and and D Smith not getting minutes at the PF spot as well.  So the 2 freshman are battling for 1 role spot off the bench.

Maybe Hobbs tells them both that they have 1 year to prove which player is better and that the loser will have to leave the program after 2010.  Competition can be good.   I would just prefer Hobbs & Co would have just went with the better of the 2 from the start and held the other schollarship for other players that fit his system better.

What makes you think that if Hobbs gets a better player this year or net year he can't move someone off the current roster?  Do you know whether all the players on the roster are returning net year?  Do you know if any players will flunk out of school this semester?  You know who knows what the team has and doesn't have?  You know who has access to tons more information about recruits?  Hobbs.  Has he made mistakes? Yes.  It is a crap shoot no matter what.  Sometimes kids don't work out despite every effort.  Nobody is bitching about Warren.  Has ANYONE seen him play?  Is he ANY good?  Nobody knows anything about him.  Me either. Two words: Andy Rooney.  Not comparing the two, but both received offers from Colgate University. Maybe with the right mentoring, young Fitzgerald can become the crudmuginous old guy spouting commentary about his daily grievances on a nationally televised weekly newshow.

Bobo, let me clarify. Players of any skill or race (since that seems to be a prevalent theme here) can be great college players despite who else was recruiting them. That was my point.
I think there are two things going on: 1) KH is trying to address a need at shooting guard; 2) the "character player" impetus has returned, my guess, from a higher-up who's looked at grades or perhaps our graduation rate as of late and told KH to get an "academic recruit" who (this time around) also can play

It is precisely these sorts of guys who can fly under the radar. They are at top programs. They fight for playing time. They do what they are told. If he goes to camps and he is boarding with the bigs, then why get upset watching highlight films of nothing but 3's?

Our two signees are fill-ins for Damian and they etend our baseline lineup with real scorers. Would I have wanted McKnight? Sure, but you have to say that with what we have, we will complete!

If we look for a guard or a top bigman, who knows????

How do you know he's a good character kid? I'm so sick of every white player being characterized as "good character kid" there are plenty of eamples from the past five years from every where around the country where this is simply not the case.

Besides, you don't waste scholarships on somebody who's a nice guy. If you're gonna do that than ask the players who their best friend not on the team is and just give them a jersey. In today's modern world if you don't have any clips about you playing basketball than you shouldn't be playing in the A10. It's that simple

DEA,

I don't assume he's a good character kid because he's white.  He's at at top academic as well as basketball prep school.  He was in heavy consideration for Cornell and Brown - not the type of schools that recruit low character kids (Harvard now is entering into the world that does).  Hobbs was recruiting multiple players on the same team and in the same league and would have seen him play and heard all about him.  He's pretty much the same profile as a kid from Chicago who wasn't considered very athletic, was the 4th best player on his AAU team, was considering GW and Princeton to study pre-med, and nobody had heard anything about him -- Mike Hall.  Now I'm not saying he's Mike Hall because NOBODY KNOWS MUCH ABOUT Fitzgerald.  Let's see how he turns out.

Well said thinker.

PLUS, a team that a coach puts out to win in high school (make that Prep) is different than at the college level. The coach has to project into the college game. I also note that he is 220 now. Give him the summer with the program and he should be a bit heavier still and much stronger. There is certainly potential there.

One other thing on your Mike Hall comparison, Hall was a huge worker and it seems that Fitzgerald is the same way. Leaving the whole white or black thing aside, after watching college ball as long has I have, there has been a lot more upside potential left unachieved than achieved. The difference may be in work ethic. You may not get this in a 4-year starter, but it is always good to have on a team.

Thinker, it's not accurate to suggest Mike Hall wasn't considered that athletic coming out of HS.  The one thing I had read about him before he got here was an article calling him the best dunker in the state of Illinois or a perfect dunker, or something like that.    He was considered very athletic.

(not to pass judgment on your point otherwise -- just to correct the inaccuracy in your post).

Thinker it's clear by saying we don't need a team full of Cheyennes that we don't need a team full of "thugs" However if you knew the players on this team you'd realize that that isn't a problem any more at all. There's no reason to take a character guy on this team right now, there simply isnt. Plus if you look at this kids twitter page (that's as good a judge as any) this kid is not eactly Tim Tebow. My point is if Lloyd doesn't sign then this recruiting class may end being considered a complete wash. You don't win in basketball with just shooters. Especially when we don't run an offense conducive to that. I would like to say I'm hopeful here but in reality I'm not at all. I predict a one year period where he gets no playing time and than hopefully for the program a transfer. Call me harsh but if we want to play with teams on our schedule  i.e Nova, avier  worrying about a kids feelings is not a priority.

DEA,

You're absolutely right about several things.  Loyd is an absolutely crucial guy for us to get.  I think that he would have an immediate impact and speed our improvement greatly.  I think that if Mikic and Fitzgerald were the only guys we got, I would be disappointed as well.  I would LOVE a recruiting class of Mikic, Loyd, and McKnight. I wouldn't ever argue to sign a guy because the big thing he brings is character - character with no appropriate skill or talent doesn't really help the team.  I certainly hope that Hobbs has recruited Fitzgerald because he sees something basketball-wise that would help the team.  I've never said that Fitzgerald is a good recruit, because, AGAIN I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT HIM.  Of course I hope he is.

I am a follower of twitter as well and I would say that there could be some iffy character guys on the team now if we were to just go by twitter.  But maybe I just don't understand twitter because I wouldn't post stuff about underage drinking and getting my dick sucked at bars -- but maybe that's my old fashioned, out of date thinking - who knows.

Knowing nothing more than what has been posted here, i've got to throw my lot in with thinker, dm and others who have taken a reasoned approach to this signing.  i would also take eception to dea's contention that what we need are athletes.  we have 10 6' 5" look-a-like athletes on this team.  for the better part of Hobb's tenure we've had an endless stream of athletes but few basketball players.  what we need are a few players to go along with our athletes.  more than that we need a few shooters.   i would love a 6-8 stud that we steal from g'town who has led the world in both rebounding and 3 point shooting but i will settle for an acknowledgment from our staff that we need to supplement our athletes with basketball players and accordingly are willing to roll the dice with a couple of late bloomers who can shoot.

Recognition of this need seems to me a bit of maturity on the part of the coaching staff and may well be part of ellerbe's influence.  we have had very little success over the years teaching kids to shoot so investing a couple of scholarships in 6'7"-6"8" shooters is not a bad gamble.

DEA, one minute you're acknowledging that it's OK that GW doesn't get All-Americans and yet in the same paragraph, you're holding Fitzgerald up against the top recruit of avier.  Newsflash dude...we're not avier and at this point in time, it would be unrealistic to suggest that KH is capable of landing comparable talent.  Or put another way, tell me what coach would be able to head GW right now and bring in comparable recruits to avier?  He's not out there.

You've picked up on a point (multiple times) that Alumnus made regarding our offense and how it doesn't free up shooters.  First of all, I don't entirely believe this.  We saw a lot of dribble drive penetration last year and should epect the same net year.  The difference is that as long as Lasan was accounted for (defensively), defenses could drop back into the lane as there was no real threat to consistently kick the ball back outside for an open 3.  This year, when there will be multiple 3-point scoring threats on the floor at the same time, penetrators should have an easier time scoring off of drives as defenders will need to keep these outside shooters at bay.  Or else, look for the number of our three point shots (attempted and made) to go up significantly.  In addition, have you thought about the fact that some facets of our offense might very well change net season due to the fact that several more capable outside shooters will have been added to the mi?

Formerly Boston Pops -- i agree with you. We need basketball players who can shoot it even more than we need more athletes right now.   However, I would caution that just because a kid can shoot it doesn't mean he's a basketball player in the sense that you and I mean it (see:  Seco Camara, Andrei Svirvidov, Matt Albritton, etc.).

I suspect how people are responding to this signing reflects whether they think he is a basketball player who can shoot it, or just a shooter.

You've hit on a great point MV.  I think that if we can sign Loyd who would appear to be quicker than TT, you also potentially can get some minutes where they are both on the floor at the same time.  I've heard for two years now how TT is such a great shooter but doesn't shoot much in games.  If you take some of the PG duties away and put him in the off-guard spot you add still another shooter.  Hobbs' system doesn't work well if we don't have good shooters and we don't have good finishers at the rim.  We didn't have much of either this past year and yet we were right in it until the end in a bunch of losses.  Add some shooters and the whole dynamic can change.

Thinker for the most part I agree with you. We both clearly want the same thing in terms of the program and there's nothing we can really do to affect who comes here. With that being said, if we don't get either Lloyd or another unknown recruit who can create their own shot than this offseason is a failure, straight up. Shooters are great but think about four years from now for a second. These two guys Fitzgerald and Mikic offer the same thing and likely won't play with each other. This is a problem. I do agree if we get another good player than I might lighten up a little about what i'm seeing. Either way we're going to be good for the net couple years with this year's freshman class. Still, it would have been nice to maybe add on a little bit.

Hey Newtman, Jabari Edwards played in 29 games for GW at the 5 (in the paint) and averaged over 10 minutes a game and averaged 2.3 rebounds over the season. My point was that from "the camps" the reports were that he could play and rebound in the paint. His prep team had him on the perimeter when he got on the court. How Hobbs uses him will probably be very different (or not) than how he was used at his prep school. I would think that, if he played 10 minutes of basketball with GW and plays it in the paint, he will accomplish 2.3 rebounds in that span. That can be done if he only manages to snare missed free throws by the opposition.

The kid was behind a top recruit for GW and may be a valuable GW addition. We have to see. That's why the camp reports are important.

DM, been trying to keep up with Fitz but all i've read is that he's a perimeter player.  i haven't read anything about him being an inside player or a rebounder. (i'd like to read the report, thanks.) my point is he didn't play inside and didn't rebound in HS so i wouldn't count on him being a force for us in the paint.  as i said i think he could be a solid addition.

do you see either Mikic or Fitz ever starting at GW with KH as coach?

The point about camps was in some North East Prep recruiting news. It included a reference that he hasn't missed a shot in a month. (joke)  ... I don't disagree with you, but, as you mentioned, as a fan we have to do some digging to even get why the coaches went a certain way. Also, someone made the point that you have to think that the coaches saw him play A LOT having scouted his teammates.

Remember that Hollis was going to be a 2 or 3 in Hollis' mind when he came to GW, but he played 4.

Do I see him starting at GW? Who knows.... Net year, probably not, but after a couple of years in the system, we may find him being a glue guy, just like Ware. GW also had a lot of missed assignments from the 4 and 5 positions. The one game I went to last year was St Joes. For once I could watch the bench reactions as Pellom made a few (many) mistakes on the full court defensive pressure... (and one complete boneheaded move from Opuku that allowed the 3 that pretty much iced the game).

Provoked by your question and herve's piece here, I went to look at the steal stats from last year. The one thing that people overlook is that Kromah was at or near national top 20 ranking for steals per minute. Smith wasn't bad and Taylor has a bit of thief in him, as well. We really turned teams over at critical times--not from Duke-like floor slapping tight overplay--but, more Butler-like active hands and anticipating passes and being where we aren't epected.

GW was almost always up on the boards, as well. The steals and solid board work, though not by one spectacular rebounder, but by a group effort, got GW into the lead or near enough to strike, if we could find the offense. Basically, we created additional offensive possessions.

So, what we need is some offensive punch to replace our departed scoring leader, Damian Hollis. The staff has two similar guys to Hollis.

Yes, I think that one of the two of them will start by two years from now. If guys like Pellom or Smith or Warren keep them on the bench, that might be a great problem to have. So GW ends up with a guy like Fitzgerald who can come off the bench and drop 15 or 17 against a top national prep team, is that bad? You can call me wrong.

If a guy like Chris comes in off the bench on the first substitution rotation and is left alone for a three and drains it; then another and another and the other team calls a time out down 14 in the first half, is that bad?

The point about the stats and the steals... I forgot ... is that our three 5's ... the THM didn't even collect 30 steals in 31 games. Remember my comment about blown assignments? If we have two guys who are possible big timers with size and outside shots and can be assist guys, then we are hugely better off. We may have had a group of Freshmen and Taylor (and Ware a bit) ... who would jump passes, but our 4 and 5 position was not that dangerous on the defensive end other than being shot blockers.

If you think that guys like the two guys coming to GW net year aren't possible starters then you had better take a moment to look at the guys at Northern Iowa. Mikic and Fitzgerald are like those guys. They can take it out to 14 and past the arc and then play D in the post. At UNI, those guys would toil away off the bench for a couple of years, then make some noise after a graduation or two.

To close this already too long post, I would say that I am growing more impressed with the coaching staff in the recruiting side. I am still not convinced that they have the fleibility to epand their game approach as the team develops. With guys like Mikic and Fitzgerald coming in to compliment the outside work of Kromah and Smith(and even Pellom), I think that we should be looking at installing a Princeton type package to compliment what we got.

Sadly, I think this thread contains a great deal of implied racism.  Rather than dwell on the new white guys being slow and unathletic, wouldn't the more cogent analysis be along the lines of whether we are now trying to be all things to all people?  We are a team that loves to run but now have some players who some fear will be unable to keep up.  Does our defensive pressure take a hit in echange for some better perimeter shooting?  Sorry to break the news but 5 minutes on YouTube really isn't going to answer any of these questions.  The coaching staff seems to feel that we will be a better team for adding outstanding shooters even if this means sacrificing in other areas.  Anyone is entitled to feel otherwise; however, it seems to me that you really ought to see these players play in person, as well as watch the team as a whole, before passing any judgments.

What's you smokin', Dolphin?

There's nothing in the bios or video to justify the claim that Fitz and Mik are anything like Damian Hollis.  Hollis could shoot the 3 but got more points down low.  Hollis could handle the ball and drive. Hollis got to the line better than anyone else on the team.  Hollis led the team in both rebounds and blocks.  Damian Hollis is a basketball player.  From what we know,  Mik and (especially) Fitz are shooters only.  There's a significant difference.

Relatively unathletic, thin jump-shooting PFs.  Mikic was productive in HS, Fitz generally was not (only 7pts/game).

Best case senario is that one of the 2 recruits claims the role of outside bombing PF off the bench - lets say 12-14 minutes/game by the end of the season.  The loser of this one spot competiion is politely told that he must transfer out.  This opens up a spot for a better recruit net year.  Hopefully both Fitz and Mik have been told they have a 1 season audition to stay on the team but it's highly unlikely that they will both be here this time net year.

I'd say the racism is more overt than implied.
But on a more relevant note, I'm happy to see a change -- call it a maturation -- in GW Basketball under KH. It once was gospel that only with run-and-jump athletes can GW compete. He even authored a book, "Scoring Easy Baskets in Transition," that contained no epilogue on what happens when you cannot force enough turnovers to spark a transition game.
Now at least there's a recognition that there are other facets of the game, and perhaps that getting skywalkers at all costs (read: without HS diplomas) may not be the best way to win games.
The problem, of course, is another KH hallmark: We now have appeared to swing way over to the other side of the athletic-cerebral continuum.
And that, ultimately, may be KH's epitaph: There is no middle ground.
It's all black or white, you might say.

Can anyone name a more underwhelming recruiting class in the past 15 years?  Perhaps Hobbs & Co are taking these guys by default  because noone else is willing to sign; therefore they are just taking warm bodies and not actually looking for any particular "type of player".  I hope our last signee is a stud. Thankfully, I'm still looking forward to the development of our current freshman.

Mentz, I don't know eactly how to take what you just posted. If you look at the guys who came with the first Hobbs big wave, we had a couple of very good outside shooters. It was Hall who stayed ... Most of the guys he got in those early days had offense coming out of their pores. The other thing that our very very good teams had were the ability to break off an offensive set and improvise.  Hall, Elliot and Omar could start breaking folks down and dishing. That was clear by their 2nd to last season of the Hall class AND then, there were so many other team members who could finish.

This past season, as well as Hobbs' team played, they stayed on a very short leash. Edwards had 3 alley oops in the season (I think) which would have been an average game for Pops. If Hobbs could sign another Pops, I think he would do it in a NY second. I just think that the two recruits are great compliments to the freshman class last year. They both can defend the post and rebound.

I believe we will Hobbs slowly evolve with these added talents. I could see how Hobbs would go with the wheel because he had a stable of, at best, streaky shooters who had speed and could go to the hole.

I don't see the guys coming in as "playing white basketball?"

Not, that you said eactly that.

Hobbs isn't really departing from his style as much as complimenting it. In a couple of years, our secondary breaks may be producing a few more points with these two guys. Our opponents are going to have to find them.

They are similar to Hollis in that they can play outside or in. They can defend and rebound in the paint and score from range. Also, last try with you bobo... Hollis came in as a 2 or 3 in his mind. He got moved to 4. Again, I believe that, in high school, Hollis was listed as a guard.

Not all players want this. Look at what happened to Tristan Spurlock in Virginia.

Make an argument about something.

Fitzgerald played everyday in practice against better players than you would find in most high school leagues in this area.

He didn't start. Oh well, what does that prove? He wasn't in the best 5? OK. But he wasn't in the best 5 on a team that could play and beat the best team in the nation. As others have said, the staff has seen the kid play a number of times. They scouted  and recruited his teammates and players on the other teams.

bobo, its high level prep basketball.

Finally, he spent time on the perimeter of the NMH offense because that's where his coach put him. Why?

At camps, playing against the best players from the east coast, he more than held his own on the boards and raised his reputation as a consistent shooter from beyond the arc.

OK, I have repeated things for you because you posted large big red letters.

Oh, yes, he is 6 foot 8 and already 220 to 230 lbs.

DM, you mi and match some things in characterizing KH's early classes. So let me clarify.
Yes, "they" oozed offense but "they" (by they I mean Elliott, Rice and Omar eclusively; not Pops, Hall, or even Kireev, in order to obliterate the racism argument others around here -- not me -- seem to be making) also came with "other attributes" that were less savory or, face it, they would have turned up at a higher-level D1 program.
Thus the move, ill-advised and poorly eecuted as it may be, toward the Allbrittons and Fitzgeralds of the world. "Real" students from "real" prep schools with "real" teachers and even (gasp!) Ivy League placements!
Not saying it's right or wrong ... or even that it's happening. But if it is happening, I can bet you it's more the administration's hand than KH's and that, in having his hand forced, there's some petulant shit going on with KH with regard to "academic" recruits who actually cannot play at the A-10 level, as some are alleging with Fitzgerald, just so he can register how he feels with having his program (which, remember, was VERY successful not too long ago), tampered with.

Trust me, I would take a great jumpshooter who's not an athlete any day of the week. What gives you any indictation that this kid is a great jumpshooter though. At least Nemanja played. HOW DID OUR GUYS RECRUIT THIS KID IF HE DIDN'T EVEN PLAY? It's a legitimate concern because the guys who write these scouting sites will just claim a kid is a good shooter if he's made a couple threes and doesn't do anything else. I'm overreacting a little here for sure, but the fact is Nemanja and him have almost word for word the same description from all the scouts and Nemanja played.

Yet Fitzgerald only averaged 1.2 rpg. He appears slow and relatively unathletic.  I doubt he will be a good defensive player or rebounder in the A10.  You say he will. One of us will be proven wrong.

Mikic seems to be a better recruit but people on this board has seen him up close.  They say he's 6-6 ma and very skinny. Hard to see him being a big time rebounder or low post defender either.

Neither player is anywhere the complete basketball player that Damian Hollis is: Scoring, rebounding, ability to drive and block shots.  They are just shooters.  While there's a place for that on the team, it's a very limited role.

DEA, our coaches don't read the scouting reports. The go and watch games and summer camps and deal with the players coaches.

Mentz, yeah. I did a bit, but I think that the unfortunate thing here is the words black and white. I think that Hobbs made a number of recruiting errors on misses 3 and 4 years ago. I am also assuming that he has a much better recruiting team with Ellerbe in the mi. Finally, I take Albritton totally off the picture.

BTW, I would reference you to herve's MAYBE piece and then tie in the recruit that most concerned me and I mentioned it when it became public that he signed and that is avier Aleander. He shot something like 40 percent from the line in high school. Hobbs just recruited guys that didn't fit together to make a winning team. I don't think that it is, as much about style, as about the fact that Hobbs is looking for basketball components of which he didn't have enough.

The fact that he can get some big bodies who can shoot and that they are also very good students seems to be a good thing. I see your point that it appears that he may have been forced that way, but it is also an easier sell. We also went after McKnight and Lloyd with what appears to be lesser success, however, I still hope we can get a guy like Lloyd.

I think Lloyd is the guy who can add the most change to the game and he is a GW-like guy. The reason that we can go from 16 wins to the low to mid-20's with him is that, if we get pressed, we could break with one less player committed in the back court and constantly attack after we get over mid-court. (like the old days). It was painful watching us break the press against St Joes last year... at the last regular season home game and just drop into our 1/2 court offense instead of making St Joes pay.

That's it.  We're all just desperate to have a white guy on the team.  I haven't been able to sleep ever since Matt announced his plans to transfer.  Puzzle solved.  You've figured us out.  Way to go creep.

I just can't comprehend how there have been 89 posts about a player that none of us have seen play.  He's not athletic?  Based on a youtube clip?  He didn't play?  He scored 7 points a game, he must have played some.

Aaron Ware averaged 6 points per game, and 19 minutes per game.  Edwards averaged 10 minutes a game and less than 2 points.  Bynes averaged 18 minutes a game and less than 5 points per game.  The only guys who scored more than 7 ppg for GW last year were Hollis, Kromah, and Taylor.

7 points per game sure looks good to me, especially if he was playing with other guys who score.

Danj I how many of those marginal college scorers averaged only 7 in HS

That's it danjsport - you are starting to see the light of what goes on here. We talk even when we have nothing new to say which then evolves into an argument over something else and a continuation of arguing over the same points repeatedly. And don't worry - if you missed any of the nonsense the first time,  this thread will likely repeat itself 4 or 5 times prior to net November. I am sure of one thing though, if God forbid Chris Fitzgerald is reading any of this he has to be wondering what the f*ck did I just do.

But I think he still has a long way to go to eceed the Ronald Reagan thread. What's more amazing is that many other college message boards would have this many posts, with a comparable mi of insights and inanities, in one day.  Fitzgerald may be the most discussed GW recruit since Dan Gadzuric.  Then again, we could always go back to off-season discussions about memories of Bur-Bee-Chick, Marrocco's, Pot 'O Gold, The Galley, and Kay's Sandwich Shop.

Blue Seats -- any player who reads this board should conclude their reading by saying, "What the F did I just do".

No player should read this site ever, nor should any player from another team read their own fans' uncensored message board.

If Fitzy does come on to read this board, he'll have two choices:

1. Take it as incentive to work harder and prove all his doubters wrong.

2. Conclude the pressure of GWU Basketball is too much for him and reverse his decision to play here.

- both are legitimate choices

Uh, pressure of GW basketball? A low-level, mid-major program whose games are attended by 3,000 people? Really?

Oh, and forgot to mention the lack of media coverage and being overshadowed by two perennial top 25 programs.

Yeah, but the other schools he was considering were Brown, Quinnipiac, Hofstra etc.  The A-10 is a little different than those.  So GW is not serious pressure, but it's more than those.

I think the pressure is on Hobbs now.  He has a nice salary.  GW spends more on athletics than most other A-10 teams.  This recruiting class is new territory for us.  Let's see if it works or not.

congratulations bobo - you are officially about the most stupid gw fan ive ever encountered

you think this kid is a bad recruit and you're saying you think it would be a wise choice for him to not come here after all

you are a real friend of the program lol

im sure hobbs is happy youre trying to convince one of his recruits to go elsewhere

why dont you post your stupid shit on the iowa state board, posing as one of their fans and convince mcknight to come to gw

I heard Chris Fitzgerald often plays hoop with Matt Albritton, LOL :). Hopefully Chris is not transferring after one year.

So many panties in a bunch over a kid who is yet to sign up for classes or run a suicide in the Smith Center. (Sigh). I wish Lev was still in the recap business.

So GW signs a relatively low rated recruit that appears to be very different than the proto-typical GW recruit.  Some on this board hate the fact that we signed a recruit that was not sought after by comparable programs, some on this board love the fact that we have a different type of recruit, especially someone who's skill is from beyond the three point line, while others are in the "wait in see" camp (with various degress of optimisim or pessimism). Ecept for the persistent name calling aimed at those with differing view points, I find nothing inappropriate about this thread.
