GW APR mention

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/09/AR2010060906007.html

"At Georgetown (937), George Washington(936) and Maryland (913), the men's basketball programs received the lowest APR scores of all the institutions' teams. The Maryland football program tallied an APR score of 929. Meantime, the men's basketball program at George Mason posted an APR score of 995, the highest of all the school's athletic teams."

May we assume that the Colonials score was lowest of all GW men's teams because it is the only "revenue-producing" sport and the pressure to win is greater?  At least from the APR alone, we have a program that is comparable to the school down the street to the west.

Not that surprising considering it's a four-year measurement in which retention plays a substantial factor. Last year's score was 917.

So, KH's program is not getting it done on the court or in the classroom compared to all other GW sports teams. There is also his amazing PR skill set which has alienated  his team, local media, season ticket fan base, and fellow coaches.   Please remind me why he is still coveted as a coach.

MSC,

Are you just figuring out now that Hobbs and GW had a disastrous run for several years with the academic likes of Mo Rice, avier Aleander, Miles Beatty, Cheyanne Moore, Lafonte Johnson and possibly others who left either without graduating or in poor academic standing?

That has been known now for several years, such that GW self-imposed the loss of a scholarship 2(?) years ago.  There is nothing new there.  So GW's score has actually improved considerably since that dark and unfortunate moment.  But Hobbs wasn't fired and things are improving - Hollis, Opoku and Travis all graduated this year, so I'd say things are turning around.  You can hate on Hobbs and want him fired - it's just that that fact that he had a bunch of bad apples and students a few years ago isn't really a sensible reason to fire him now (it might have been then).

Thinker, you make a good point about the carry on effect with the bad apples and the APR.  Unfortunately, these were KH's recruits so he can only blame himself and his staff,  but I do understand  that there is no reversing the past.  The APR is just the latest setback.   I have wanted KH out for the last four years mostly due his lack of accountabablity, professionalism, and leadership.  I don't believe he's the proper ambassador to represent the University and its basketbal program.  I was a season ticket for 18 years but didn't renew last year and won't renew until KH is gone.

MSC,

For those who wanted Hobbs fired, the moment where it could have happened was after the 2008-2009 season.  Apparently it was seriously considered and didn't happen because Hobbs and GW couldn't agree on a buyout.  Hobbs was on a very short leash after that year and (I think) was kind of forced into hiring Ellerbe to help stabilize the program.  If he hadn't had a great recruiting class that competed well throughout the year, I think the school might well have pulled the trigger and replaced him with Ellerbe mid-season.  Clearly there should be optimism about the returning players and people can decide for themselves about the incoming recruits (I'd call it a very under the radar class), so the Ellerbe insurance plan ended and he left.  I would guess that if the team does well net year and everyone stays away from scandal then we'll be hearing about a contract etension for Hobbs soon enough.

MSC, what is this "setback" you speak of concerning the APR?  The fact that men's basketball ranks lowest among GW's athletic teams (despite the fact that this score is completely acceptable by NCAA standards)?  Well guess what?  As GW's dominant revenue-producing sport, with more pressure, travel demands and out-of-classroom time than any other sport at GW, you will find that over the course of decades, men's basketball consistently ranks among the lowest "team GPA's", both at GW as well as virtually every school in the country.  But I suppose if you see a chance to attack Hobbs, you're going to take it regardless of whether it's a fair point or not.  And speaking of Hobbs, did you really say that he and his staff have nobody to blame but themselves for several academic failures?  How about the student-athletes themselves?  Are they totally immune from any blame or criticism in your eyes?  Is a student-athlete really not at all responsible for their own academic success?  Most players under Hobbs come here understanding and accepting the school's academic responsibilities and these players end up graduating.  It seems to me that if you're going to blame Hobbs and staff for academic failures, you had better also praise them for the academic successes which represent the vast majority of players.

MV,

You're right.  KH should be absolutely thrilled the men's basketball team finished last in APR for all GW athletic teams. Impressive!   The same article also referenced GMU's mbb  finishing  first,  so perhaps,  your general observation has some holes.  Yes, I did say KH and staff should be responsible for all the early departures / bad eggs that Thinker referenced factoring into the APR.   There were red flags galore about Beatty, Cheyenne, etc... that should have been seen as risks and the coaching staff should be accountable for the results.

What I said was that men's basketball consistently ranks among the lowest when compared to other sports.  I did not say that it is always the lowest everywhere or that it is always the lowest at GW.  Mason's APR rank this year happens to be an eception to the rule.

MSC, you just have all of the answers don't you.  The red flag surrounding Beatty was attitudinal and as it would turn out, behavioral.  I don't recall any red flag during his recruitment regarding academics.  Same for Cheyene; in fact, other than his being unhappy over playing in what he felt was an overly structured offense at Clemson, I don't recall any red flags, certainly none that could be considered academic-related.  But I know it's very easy for you to blame Hobbs for taking such huge academic risks after the fact.

Just for fun, why don't you tell me if any of this year's incoming freshmen are academic risks?  That way, if they don't pan out, you can always say that you blamed Hobbs for bringing them here before any or all are dismissed.

MV,

I guess it was your alter ego that posted your original response, "both at GW as well as virtually every school in the country". Keep up the good work.

To build on what you point out, MV, I'll add that Omar Williams would have logically been a huge academic risk and he graduated on time in good standing.  Mo Rice was similarly risky coming in - yet he held it all together academically until his emotional/psychological meltdown senior year - which was mostly driven by the death/serious illness of the two people who raised him - his mother and grandmother in short succession.  How do you predict that?

MV, MSC got you admit it. you didnt hear anything about those recruits?  GW's due diligence should be a lot better than rumors we hear on this and other message boards.  or are you saying GW doesn't do due diligence?  let's face it it was a terrible period on and off the court.

Got me?  I'll still happily stand by my comment.  Newtman, how does one perform due diligence when questioning whether a player might fail out of college?  Thinker mentioned Omar and I'll throw in JR who is planning to earn his degree.  "Due diligence" might have suggested that neither player be admitted to GW because given their high school careers (academically), each could have been considered liable to flunk out.  Fortunately, KH and staff saw things in both that others may very well have missed.

It is KH's job to stress academics in his recruiting pitches and to do his best to admit players into his program who he feels will be successful academically at GW.  It is not KH's fault if and when some of these players do not live up to their end of the bargain by failing to take academics seriously.  At most, it is a reflection on KH but by no means is it his fault, which is what MSC seems to be saying.

Wrong Blackberry. What don't you go ask Syracuse what the think about APRs or go read their message boards? Check-in with UK in two years and see what their fans are discussing about APRs. This is being widely discussed and actually has a large bearing on all of the college football re-alignment that's been going on.

At the risk of the world spinning off its ais I will agree with MV. What some of you don't realize is that the NCAA has made "due diligence" a lot more difficult over the years. By limiting contacts with recruits, coaches must rely on far more third party reports often from stakeholders - AAU coaches, high school coaches, parents, friends etc. There was a time not too long ago when coaches knew more about recruits and were able to follow kids more closely. On top of that there is the natural phenomena that 18-22 year old kids just don't always do what they are told or predicted to do. That is not just a GW issue and affects a lot more than sports. Basketball players are probably not more or less likely to make poor decisions, defy authority and not listen to counseling from "old heads" than the general student population under the same circumstances. The only difference is we all know about those poor decisions because they are tracked and reported. But to say a coach should know about certain conduct beforehand in every case where there are no "priors" is just Monday morning quarterbacking.

Sure, it doesn't look good, but the bottom line is that if you're mad about this score, what you are actually mad about are events - the pre-graduation departures of Rice, Beatty, Moore, and so on - that mostly happened two, three, four years ago and have already been discussed at length.

wow, MV and Seneca on the same page . . . however, sometimes the posters really beat shit to death.  Dang like MV and Seneca have nailed it: (1) Hobbs (and Penders) is not recruiting in a vacuum - he gets sign-off from the administration so please stop suggesting this guy is out there seeking to find tough love candidates; and, (2) for you old guys this is very similar to income averaging - it reflects life at the program over a period and some of the events which helped determine the score have already been gone over and over by the site - how far up the duodenum do you guys have to travel each time?  This is not a player who murdered his girlfriend, forfeiting a ton of wins in multiple sports due to some back room payments, a coach fishing his players from the police station every week after fights at the local strip club, running a stolen car ring, selling marijuana out of the dorms, getting thrown out of multiple games for fighting, cheating on eams, getting grades in phantom classes, taking courses which belie the phrase "higher education."   - - - chill
