Guys, if there is anyone who can help with this situation, I'd appreciate it.

Friend of mine from college in Michigan is a four-year Army vet who is enrolled at GW starting in the fall to finish his degree. He is having a problem securing housing because he has lived on Army property for four years and Army property doesn't count as rental history. So many (or more accurately, all) apartment complees in the District that he has applied to have told him that he would need a co-signer because of this. He also has the new GI Bill, which allows him to spend up to $2k on rent per month. This is guaranteed by the government, but complees are giving him crap because it's not "guaranteed income" from employment. He has no one available to co-sign a lease for him, parents are out of the question.

I have told my friend to get in touch with the VA and see if they would write a letter eplaining his benefits, how they are guaranteed by the government, and hopefully that will satisfy the "income requirements." If this doesn't happen, he might be screwed on that front. I have also told him to start focusing more on private landlords and eplaining his situation. Hopefully he can find a landlord with a military background or sympathies. I have also told him to check with the GW Student Vets to see what they have to say, he's obviously not the first vet to have this problem.

Start with the GW Housing office.  Vice President Chernak could help too and if necessary, contact the President's office as well (Barbara Porter, Chief of Staff - (202) 994-2266.

GWU Veteran Students services should be able to help.  They have a new Veteran Services coordinator named Mary Waring that has just started, but will be a great resource.  I just met with her today.

There are complees that are military friendly, might be a good idea to ask other veterans, etc.  I personally don't know of any (I am not military), but my understanding is it takes a little proactive footwork, but they are out there.

Also, consider speaking with someone from the Student Veterans of America.

I have a friend on active duty working for the Navy.  He lives in Courtland Towers in Courthouse.  He said the person in charge of leasing is former military and was very fleible about the lease, knowing he might be called overseas again.  Not sure if he wants to live on campus, but seems like a good place to check out if he's willing to make the (5 minute) metro commute from Arlington.
