To the kids who voted 290 schools ahead of GW (or 583 ahead of Howard), if you really want to go to a school in Houston, Tulsa, Moraga, Iowa or "Deliverance"-type places in Georgia ahead of The George Washington University and the Nation's Capitol, then be my guest. We do not need you. In fact, to quote Washington insider and frequent GW hospital patron Dick Chaney: "Go f*$# yourself".

A b.s. list of no value and even less scientific criteria. Why does crap like this get published in the first place (oh yeah, actual journalism costs too much time and money!).

Any word on how the males at Wellesly voted?  Come on, W&L over Duke lol.   What about VMI at 60 ahead of some no-names like UNC, Cal, Cornell, UCLA, Wake, Wash U., Hopkins, Michigan, Carnegie Mellon (which fell behind uh, uh, uh Randolph Macon). . . some of the factors are going to provide weight to military schools or schools with strong ROTC programs - debt and jobs out of school.  But please this is not even crap.

People still care about the US World and News rankings?  We've been flirting with the top 50 for at least a decade of this subjectively stupid list for awhile now.  At least the school made a concerted effort to race to the top of the most epensive list.  We're #1!

the forbes list is bollocks..that's common (anecdotal) knowledge but i'm not sure why you singled out regions instead of schools? there ARE good schools in all of those locations (rice, grinnell, georgia tech, emory). Many of which are as academically strong, if not stronger, than our alma mater. Your attack makes you sound as uninformed and ignorant as those that put this crap list together...

I get it, we have the monuments...that was so important to my higher education!!!

No, GW has access to the top offices (public and private) in the country. While someone at Rice might have dreamed about an unpaid summer intership at a law or congressional office, I was able to work at one part time and get paid while going to GW, that is the opportunity the school offers. I had classmates doing on-air stand-ups for regional TV broadcasters, working on international trade negotiations, researching at the Library of Congress and working in a major urban ER all while going to school. So they graduated with far more eperience than someone elsewhere. And then I had decision makers teaching classes, too. And THAT is what makes GW a better place than Grinnell or Kenyon. Sure, being able between classes to wander over to see the first airplane or the original Star Spangled Banner or the Hope Diamond or the Gettysburg Address was no bummer either.

Really, GW South? Because based on your name, I'm inferring that you're from the South, yet decided when it was time to go to college that you'd rather go to school in the nation's capitol. Apparently the region that you're so vehemently defending wasn't good enough for you. The point of the comment you quoted was to say that it is better to come to a school in a great city that also happens to be the center of our government than to go to a school in a small town in the South where there's nothing beyond the school, an attitude you yourself seem to have, as it brought you to GW.

There are a lot of great schools in the south, both in big cities and small towns. I came here because I wanted to get out of Tennessee and study geography, and I liked the school.

The one thing I didn't like though was people's opinions of the south. I remember one time I was at a party and a girl was doing a video for a class and when she heard I was from Tennessee, she asked, seriously, how I liked being in a city. Come on, there's a whole world out there.

I have nothing against the South, in fact DC is in the South if you define it as the region south of the Mason-Dion line. I do have something against picking non-selective schools that offer nothing more than being in small towns where the university is the economic mainstay ahead of GW (or AU or Howard or Catholic), as the kids in this non-scientific survey did. There are fine schools in the South (Tulane, Richmond, William and Mary, GA Tech) but then there are not so fine schools in the South and elsewhere that are ranked ahead of GW (note, Moraga is in California and Iowa, like Moraga, is not in the South). This is not about geographic snobbery (I could have mentioned the parts of Big Sky country where the men are men and the sheep are scared, guess I should have).

GWAA - I didn't take it as an attack on the South specifically - I read it more as a GW sentiment I heard a lot, which was that anything outside of the Northeast or California was a bunch of cow humpers, so I apologize if that was not your intent.  I did indeed look at GWU because of the great work opportunities while in school, and was able to take advantage of them for more four years there (which just ended).
