I just made a gift to the Smith Center project and included this comment (hope somebody reads it) - that the/a game football from the 1957 Sun Bowl victory, as well as a Southern Conference Championship hoops ball are on display in a flimsy case in the 5th floor lobby of the Marvin Center.  They are in front of a window, in full sun and I think that the old items are deteriorating rapidly.  They should be moved to a new climate-controlled and secure display in the refurbished Smith Center.  If anyone on campus with contacts at the Athletic Center reads this, please pass it along.  Also, at the bottom of this MC display case is a collection of SJT's hippos - I hope they get thrown away!

re: "scare them off", my first reaction to seeing the Smith Center was that it looked a lot like my High School gym in Kentucky.  I was not impressed, but considering we were coming off a 1-27 season I wasn't coming to GW for basketball.  Luckily, 2 years later we were Cinderella statusing and we had the most feared gym in the A-10.  Cheney had to hold his timeouts in the lane, and the benefits of such a small, cinderblock gym were readily apparent.

It really looks great so far. Those mock-ups (like the one above the "New Post" link on the left side of this page) don't do it justice at all. It's much more sleek and modern looking than you would imagine. I've also really enjoyed the few times I've walked by and there has been an open door and the scoreboard has been on. It's gonna be a major improvement over the crappy video board that was up there last year. I think my iPhone had better screen resolution than that thing.

I was puzzled.  You must have seen the email I wrote to the WAPO regarding its article that it had inside information why Fenty lost.  The article was so light on details to not be relevant.  I personally do not like Fenty, however, no matter who gets the credit, the schools seemed better, crime stats are down, the city has made efforts to beautify itself etc.  With that said, I live in the burbs and am no longer a homicide prosecutor who talks to the voiceless folks in forgotten parts of the city.  They truly may have a beef - I do not know.  I have not seen their roads, I have not read MPD reports regarding gunfire, stick-ups etc.  However, as much as I thought the guy was a pr!ck, I did not see why he lost his seat (although they said that about Anne Richards as well and she gave up her seat to Bush despite being tough on crime, eecuting inmates, having a good economy etc.).

Notta, I am with you about the reporting. BUT, we are an odd population in the USA. There were lots of claims of cronyism and that seemed to be the most common theme. To me, that's all part of politics. Some people are just better at it. As we all know, many in DC have been worse.

It is also curious that there was a claim that Fenty was ignoring most of the city and just focusing on NW and also businesses. Unfortunately, that caused an unneeded us versus them thing which is really unproductive since everyone in DC depends on many of the same services. The more attractive NW residential areas get, the more money there is in taes for the entire city. There just seems to have been a bunch of "group think" going on.

We'll see if it was a good move.

Fenty didn't have to lose.  He ran a horrible campaign and squandered his huge war chest aimlessly, without giving people a reason to vote for him over Gray. 

Whatever you think about how the city, or parts of the city are doing, he lost because he doesn't have the first clue about modern campaigning (he won the first time by default, and it served him poorly this time around).
