Walked in at tip-off (6:15). Chris, Jaason and Greg were in attendance as was Dom and a couple of other familiar faces. Leroy Charles was coaching the “GW” team. No rosters available so I had to figure out the guys by myself.

The first half started very fast with the “Colonials” breaking the unwritten summer rule of no-defense with intense man-man and going for steals and taking charges. Lots of fast breaks led by TJ with 2-3 options at the basket. The score at the half was 53-34. That’s with the clock not stopping at all during the half. I’ve seen a bunch of other Kenner scores and that’s just impressive. The second half deteriorated a bit (and Travis Garrison seemed to play more) and we won it 39-38 for a 92-72 final score. Pops, TJ and Mike sat out the end of the second half. Chris (and Dom) had a massive grin on at the end of the game, as did I.

As free throw said, THIS IS ALL WITHOUT OMAR AND CARL! (Ok BM, stop hyper-ventilating) BUT IT’S ALL WITHOUT CHRIS AND GREG AND DARNELL AND TAMAL AND MARQUIN!!!

Now for the player impressions:

TJ – Didn’t recognize him at first as he’s put on a lot of bulk (I assume as a result of the off-season emphasis on the weight room that KH was talking about). He hadn’t slowed down and made a lot of defensive stops, a few patented drives to the basket and a lot of outside shots. He actually took a hard charge in the second half of a summer league game! He also threw up a lot of no-look ally-oop passes, which is not a problem when you have three guys waiting above the rim for the dunk (Pops, Mike, Jaz). Any decent PG is going to enjoy playing with this recruiting class very much.

Ale – The un-Koul. He is very fluid and has good hands and has a whole arsenal of moves around the basket. Fast up and down the court and ready to eecute with the fast break. Unfortunately he doesn’t have Koul’s bulk either and it showed when Garrison was on the court when he was pushed out from under the basket and disappeared offensively. Took a few mid-range face-up shots which seemed to baffle the defense.

Dario – Was very active as usual and didn’t shoot particularly well as usual and made a few good defensive stops as usual and turned it over a few times as usual. He could start on GMU, but I don’t know how much PT he’s going to get unless he picks a role and gets really good at it.

Mike – I get goose-bumps thinking about his future. Played intense D, boarded, lots of tips and dunks & steals. The kid is very fast and has great body control. As the article said, he took two jumps for everybody else’s one. Think of Jaason with more bulk and a bit more attitude. One issue was that he didn’t take any outside shots, which he’s going to have to do in KH’s system.

Pops – He dunked 37 times. The guy lives above the basket. Ally-oop city baby! Think of Jaason on pogo sticks. On one sequence, he blocked a shot on the opponent’s fast break, grabbed the ball and dribbled through traffic down the court and was fouled on the tomahawk attempt. Swatted a bunch of shots. Also not much of an offensive threat outside the key.

Jaz – I would be really, really ecited about him if we didn’t have all the other guys this year. Bulkier than the other forwards, but still very athletic and with great hops. More of a classic rebounder and inside player with short shots/dunks and a decent bo-out.

Maurice Murphy – Kid from Columbia (U that is) ran the point for a while and scored a bunch of inside/outside points. His mom thought I was a scout.

Troy Hayden (?) – Last guy off the bench. Wasted a few possessions with wild shots.

Holloway:

Travis Garrison – Maryland recruit. Think of a slightly smaller c.web, without the offensive skills. Mickey D’s All-American, but you couldn’t tell by this game. Had a good defensive effort though and cleared out the area under the basket pretty efficiently.

Chris McCray – Maryland recruit. As has been reported in other Kenner reviews, he is not impressive at all. Made a lot of drives to the basket and either lost the ball or put up a wild shot. His outside shot wasn’t working either. He was maybe the 7th best player on the floor today.

Isaiah Swann – Top 15 player in class of 2004 who would be a top ACC level recruit if he had his academics in order. Going to Oak Hill instead. Ran the point and scored most of the points for them

A couple of other guys from Holloway looked real familiar (A-10?, UMD?) and were not stiffs at all.
