Any more information about the alumni game August 11, or did I just hear about it in a dream. If so, it's pretty sad that I'm dreaming about GWHoops, and not something a lot more exciting.

Yes there is a game that day

gw05098/4/2017 3:58:56 PM

Wut.

The email says its Saturday August 12th, not the 11th.

Dear Colonials Fan,

The GW Men's Basketball Program is about family. Whether in the Smith Center, the Tin Tabernacle, Uline Arena or Conmy Hall, if you were once a Colonial, you're forever a Colonial.

That's why I'm inviting you to join us to watch our alumni game on Saturday, August 12, at 11:30am, as part of the GW Men's Basketball Reunion. Players from across all eras of GW Basketball will come together on Tex Silverman Court and relive some of their best memories. I hope you'll cheer them on in the stands.

Tickets are free, but we ask that you RSVP by clicking here. Keep an eye on my Twitter feed for updates on who's expected to play. I look forward to seeing you in the Smith Center.

Raise High,

Maurice Joseph
Head Coach, GW Men's Basketball

Thanks...you're right. I emailed them but never heard back from them...is anyone going, and do we know some of who's going to play?

rocket8/7/2017 9:41:56 AM

Mojo Tweeted a reminder this morn but without any details.

I plan to go with a few other season ticket-holders.

Be good to know who is playing to build interest.

man, awesome line up. bummed to miss it!

gw alum abroad8/10/2017 11:56:36 AM

A couple of names I do not recognize (Jeff Alston? Don Ardell? Someone please refresh my fading memory). Also, interesting to see SirValient listed.

But the thought of seeing Pops, Monroe, Shwanta, Hall, TT, Elliott and KING all on the court at the same time gives me a stiffie!

Alston was a walk on

Buff 86 Blue 43. Pinnock, Armwood and Val Brown with 25 each

bigfan8/10/2017 2:17:28 PM

Very impressive! Figured Joe and Chris, of course. Should disseminate this lineup in another email.

Don't think Sir Val is an alumnus. More like attendee, but interesting that he is coming. Maybe GW was more important than he thought at the time.

Would recommend Tyler takes it easy. Good for him to spend time with Pops, who can provide NBA advice.

If there is no plan for a reception afterward, there should be one that includes fans.

mv colonial8/10/2017 2:33:04 PM

If I remember Don Ardell was the early to mid sixtys. don't think he was a starter. If I am right he was president of PKA and was associated wit Prevention Magazine.

nj colonial8/10/2017 2:53:44 PM

Wow, great rosters!

pkgw8/10/2017 3:06:33 PM

i will not be in town but this looks like a fun pick up game.  Hope they have some highlights.

pkgw8/10/2017 3:08:01 PM

My only wish is that more of the 40+ year old crowd would have shown like Dirk, Sonni and Glen

2

danjsport8/10/2017 3:20:21 PM

interesting to see Shawnta on the list

4

the dude8/10/2017 3:34:23 PM

Haha, I know Dan, hopefully that puts an end to the BS about posts about Darnell and Shawnta.  The great Shawnta Rogers back in action will be great to see.

5

the dude8/10/2017 3:39:30 PM

David Pellom who transfered out as well.  Would be nice to see Kethan back, Lasan too.

As for Glen and company, those guys are about 50 years old.  This is a very young alumni game, with guys who have graduated last year playing.  Shawnta is in pretty great shape, but Glen would be the first to tell you he can't keep up with these guys these days.  Fantastic though to have so many guys back on campus, I hope the outreach with the alumni improves greatly.  Should be honoring these guys a lot more frankly.

bigfan8/10/2017 3:55:50 PM

Would really be good to see some on the Sweet 16 team, but realize it is getting to the point where they may not be able to play full court against the likes of Joe and Tyler and more recent graduates.

Which just shows how time passes.

dmvpiranha8/10/2017 4:11:56 PM

It appears the starting lineups are (from the dots next to the name):

Buff - Chris Monroe-Pops Mensah-Bonsu-Tony Taylor-JR Pinnock-Isaiah Armwood

Blue - Tyler Cavanaugh-Mike Hall-Alex Mitola-Carl Elliott-Joe McDonald

I think the Buff has a better roster overall from top to bottom, but the Blue has more players with a winning mentality. Hard to count out Mike, Carl, Shawnta, and Tyler. Between those four they could win the entire game for the Blue. Does each team have a coach? Wonder how they'll do substitutions.

gw alum abroad8/10/2017 4:33:13 PM

If it is anything like the games my age group plays, anyone needing the defibulator has to come out and sit on the bench...

1

free quebec8/10/2017 6:07:51 PM

Shawnta, Tyler, and Mike Hall on the same team is pretty sweet. As long as Brian Bynes doesn't shoot :)

3

the dude8/10/2017 6:40:23 PM

Annual occurrence I hope? I dont recall this being played in past years.  Mojo's idea?

2

bm8/10/2017 8:40:31 PM

Apparently Michigan State has done this a couple of times.

2

gwalum20018/10/2017 9:14:25 PM

This looks amazing...I am going and will try and take some video/pics

2

sw8/10/2017 10:09:29 PM

I have a dillemma.

I really want to attend the alumni game, but it conflicts with European football. Does anyone have suggestions for a wifi connection at smith center? Should I just suck it up and get unlimited data for a day?

2

the dude8/10/2017 10:11:59 PM

BM, it sure has the feel of a Mich St type of thing.  The best 5-7 from this game should play in a GW alumni team in "The Tournament" next summer.

2

minsk8/10/2017 11:57:16 PM

video please! These lineups are outstanding. Thanks Mojo.

Looking forward to seeing this game!

This year, GW has combined Colonials Weekend (Parent's Weekend for undergrads) in the Fall with the annual Alumni Weelkend in October - I hope that they make this game an annual event and maybe have it during the new Colonials/Alumni Weekend when more students are on campus and alums are in town.

4

bigfan8/11/2017 1:22:08 PM

Good idea to play on alumni weekend, though it now gives us a treat in the summer doldrums.

Seems weird to combine Parents and Alumni weekend. Two very different constituencies, except for the occasional alumn who has kids in school at that very time.

nj colonial8/11/2017 3:55:50 PM

Bigfan:  by combining the two, it brings current students and parents together with alumni and this should help increase school spirit.  The main goal is to emphasize a lifelong relationship with GW - every student becomes an alumnus so why not start early.  Plus the budgets for both events combined can result in bigtime entertainment and events.

1

gw alum abroad8/11/2017 4:03:33 PM

Then again, the kids want their parents out of their hair, the parents want reassurances their kids are OK and then to be able to liquor up and the alums want the kids to turn down the hippity-hop music and for the parents to go back to Ohio (or wherever it is people stand on the leff while riding Metro escalators!).

gwalum20018/12/2017 1:22:16 PM

What a fantastic event.  Standing room only, a few hundred people there.  Went to triple OT.  SirVal, Monroe, Big Shot Carl trading baskets at the end.  Carl doing what he always did, make ridiculous shots with time running out.

Great atmosphere, did a lot to restore my faith in the program.  Well done Mojo/Nero!

101 - 98 I think it was. Elliott twice hit clock beating shots to extend the game. Very entertaining. Szczerbiak, Tallent (coaching), Cavanaugh (coaching), and a handful of otthers also present.
