Tardy Respect for the Women, Sort of
7/13/2003 5:24:00 AM
Poster: Poog

The women's college hoops site ran a feature with 50 questions about the upcoming season. In answer to the question which team had moved up the most in their initial top 50 pre-season rankings published in May, they identified GW. Colonials had been ranked #39 which seemed at the time to be absurdly low to me...and I wrote them as much. Current comment about the Colonials was that they goofed in their assessment because of the site's own poor homework on them (they only cited Ugo's return and forgot about CJ). My biggest worry is that so much will be epected and NEEDED from our incoming Christ the King PG. But I still believe that Colonials hoops on both sides of the aisle will eplode this year. It would be nice if that could translate into more fannies in the seats...and more shirt sales for ziik. Hey, maybe we can all pitch in and not only help herve pay for this site, but get one of those revolving advertisements on the official scorer's table. Well, OK, maybe we can just make sure that herve's epenses are covered. Which reminds me, herve, when you get done defending OSU athletic academics, you ought to let us know when and how much you'll need to keep this place running for another year -- I can never keep track of all of this.

Want to start promoting the women's team more? Start scheduling UConn and Penn State on a regular basis.

Women have been playing UTenn and UConn over the last several years as well as other top programs, home and away and in tourneys. Both UTenn and PSU are on the schedule this year. The problem has been winning those games against top 20 teams, not scheduling them. Cast different stones or cast them somewhere else, dirtysouth.

Poog--what are the best women's games at Smith this year? UTenn? PS? are they at home? anybody else?

I don't understand the umbrage being taken when, 1) I don't know what the previous schedules for GW and 2) there is an attempt to make a valid point. However, if you are looking for an argument, I would highly suggest to take your vaunted teams to play schools such as Duke, NC State, North Carolina in home and home series, promote the hell out of them instead of just hanging a banner outside the Smith Center saying "Basketball Game tonight" and blowing up a basketball balloon in the Marvin Center, and maybe try to hold the games in a different venue, such as the MCI Center.

I thought GW had beaten NC & NC State recently, no? and sought out UConn, Tennessee, etc.? Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, Florida, and others? Iowa State? aren't these gals traditional basketball bigtimers? heck, what do the GW bball women need to do? take on Furman, Stetson, Mercer and Mississippi College to get a stamp of approval? Maybe the Citadel, VMI, or Mary Baldwin? personally, I think the GW women are the best looking team out there, year after year, and they should get some points for that, too.

The umbrage was taken because you were accusing GW of not playing the top teams without having any idea whether they had or not. In fact, they have played a collection of the better teams in the women's game -- Rutgers, Penn State, N.C State, Tennessee, Connecticut, Florida, Villanova, etc. at home and on the road. As for playing in a venue other than the Smith Center, that is a fool's errand. It costs big bucks to rent the MCI Center and there is no epectation, let alone a guarantee, that they could draw enough fans to cover the bill. Criticize GW and its fans for that but it is simply a cold hard reality. GW has traveled to top places and brought in strong opponents to D.C. Over the last 5 years or so, they have basically lost far more than they have won; prior to that GW was winning its share of the big games. Our respect will have to come from beating some of those top OOC teams since the A-10 is not a women's powerhouse conference. But in the big scheme of things, GW is better than #39 going into net season. How much better will be determined, as everything ultimately is, on the court. As for the sign "Basketball Game Tonight," I don't know, it tells people what's going on. The horse still has to want to drink the damn water.

I do apologize for not taking the time to memorize the women's b-ball media guide; unfortunately, I have more important things to do. As in recently, I don't recall GW coming down to North Carolina while I was there to play any of the Tobacco Road teams. The newspapers are pretty good about the women's basketball coverage. But, then again, I haven't read the media guide to know the previous years schedules.

Well 2 years ago I was down in Raleigh to watch the women play at the Hurricanes arena. Guess you weren't there because I don't remember seeing a sign out front that there was a basketball game that night instead of a hockey game. I believe the Wolfpack were up in D.C. the year before that but since I haven't memorized that year's media guide yet, I couldn't quite say for sure. But it is good that you have more important things to do so you don't have to bother with pesky facts or fairness in what you post about the women. But hey, it's just a little unimportant squabble in the family...we'll both get beyond this.

I was on the airplance with the NC St. women's team flying out of DC after they played us here. I am certain that game took place.

I'm not a big follower of the women's team (soory Poog, just not enough time to add them), but even I know they consistently do play the kinds of teams tht Dirty South criticized them for not playing. Dirty, your post was flat-out wrong and your "media guide" response compounds it. Admit your mistake and move on.

I think that we are looking in the wrong direction if we epect that new PG from Christ the King to help us immensely. If you look at the history, GW has been dominated ny some pretty decent post players. This has alot to do with the fact that McKeown dosn't coach the post as much as he coaches the guards. With all the stress that would be placed on the girl, I would rather continue to have Marsheik run the point and let the young one toughen her skin for the year after. As far as schedualing is concerned there are home games this year against Oregon, Boston College, Tennessee, and then 2 games vs. Penn State and possibly Kansas State for a tournament. As long as our girls can pull off some decent wins, then there is no reason why Women's College Hoops won't be putting us in the Top 10.

Whenever I am criticizing a person, team, or event, I do my best to emphasize that it is a criticism. However, my original response was a comment about how to improve women's attendance, not a criticism. I believe that a REGIONALLY known team, coming to play on a regular (meaning yearly) basis, may help out attendance, and that can be applied to any sport. The three Carolina teams I mentioned have lousy attendance. More people attend the Carolina women's soccer games than go to Carmichael Auditorium for the women's basketball games. The only time there is a crowd at Cameron is when the Duke women play UNC. I was at a NCAA game of NC State-Youngstown State @ Reynold Coliseum in 1998, and there may have been 50 people there (and that's not including the cheerleaders from both sides, pep bands, etc.) You would never have a problem getting tickets to see a game at any of those places, even for a NCAA game. I can personally vouch for that. I apologize if my heavy sarcasm has offended anyone. I have only been up in Northern VA for a year- don't quite know everything up here yet about GW.

As a relative newcomer to GW and the area, Dirty South, let me give you some insight -- the handful of us who post here treat GW sports as the religion that it is. The rest of the area, especially the media, are heathens. We preach to the choir and play the Rodney Dangerfield role as GW fans. The Carolina triangle you speak of is known as Tobacco Road; the path to GW is known as the Road Not Taken. We speak of many solutions that work in theory but rarely succeed in reality in this area. We are a very small breed here...a breed that cares. Welcome to the club...but unless you're very resilient, you might want to temper your epectations a little...or find a good mantra to chant. Works for me, anyway. Yammmmmmmmm...Yammmmmmmmm...Yammmmmmmmm.

I agree with Wishful Thinking about the women's most important need/position. In the 13 seasons I've followed them, the best seasons were those with Tajama Abraham at center. Yes, we had a solid all-around team, especially in TJ's junior and senior years, and yes, we had solid point guard play with ecellent ball-handling. But it was the should've-been all-American center who stirred the pot.

Much as I enjoy watching Ugo play, she simply is not as good an all-around athlete at the position as TJ was. That's not a criticism of Ugo, who's served us well and is an eceptional shot-blocker. It's simply stating the truth.

Disagree on this one. When Colleen McCrea was injured and unavailable to play the point, GW's offense bogged down. Obviously the big girl in the middle is a tremendous advantage, and I agree that Ugo is no TJ, but we've played in the NCAA's with an undersized center. A true PG, which incoming CtK Locascio is supposed to be, will transform the Colonials offense. As big a Davidson fan as I have been, that's the position that has plagued the team the most dating back to Kristeena's entrance on the scene. Settling down at that position a la Retta and Amy at avier, should do wonders for GW.

Dirty South you are welcome to come to all of the women's games. Season's tickets are absolutely the best deal in town. And you get a well coached team to watch.

I agree with Poog and ELJ. Our big women have been finesse players, weak and unable to rebound against smaller but stronger players. Our guards have been downright inconsistent. Cathy Jones can be one hell of a player. It's just that one night she can't miss, and the net night she's disappeared. Our point guards have shown promise, then either gotten hurt or failed to develop.

We could still win all our games against lesser competition, ecept for avier. It was just the Stanfords, Tennessees and UConns who blew us out. Now if Rock had a se change....

That's why, and how, reasonable, knowledgeable fans can disagree, Poog. Obviously, we'd both love to have a super-guard as well as a super-center. For that matter, the same applies for the men.
