A couple of ralignment articles
A couple of ralignment articles

I found a couple of articles today that are pretty interesting. The one in the Post talks about the Great East (The new name for the B.E. football conference) and the new Big East, which the Post says will have UMass and avier etc. in it, will be competing against each other for a new television contract. It has a quote from Jarvis in it. The other article in the B.C. paper says that the football and Basketball split is further along than people think. The B.C. paper also has Notre Dame in the new football conference. I thought they may be heading to the basketball conference. I wish GW was somewhere in the mi, I'm even seeing St. Joes name brought up, but I guess GW is just not in the picture. Like some here have said, if all of this only happened 5 years ago, I think GW's name would be brought up in some of these stories.

That's a real crappy conference put together in the BC article. Bringing in the worst team from the Patriot League? For both sports, what a huge difference between the haves and have-nots. For football, it was nice of them to give Notre Dame a permanent spot in the title game. Is this the best they could do?

This feels like the start of a long, painful decline for the GW basketball program. By the end of all this, the GW-AU rivalry will really mean something.

Well if N.D. does go to the Great East then the new basketball conference will probably take 7 teams to fill itself out (so they have a 12 team conference). How many of those will come from the A-10? The 2 strong contenders from CUSA are Marquette and Depaul. From the A-10 it appears that , Dayton, UMass, Rhode Island are all real possibilities. Could it go even deeper than that? They would still need one more team on top of those to make 12. I guess they could go after St. Louis in CUSA, or maybe keep it more East Coast with Temple or St. Joes. As I said earlier if GW could lobby its A-10 counterparts to make it a 14 or even 16 team conference maybe we could sneek in. But what motivation do any of the ADs have to help us? They are just looking to insure their own positions at this point. If you look at that new Big East midwest division, with St. Louis it would have only 5 teams, GW should offer to be the 6th (no matter what the travel schedule looks like). It's better than going to upstate NY to play the Bonnies.

Perhaps it's the Pollyanna in me, but I do not think that GW will be pressing its nose against every basketball conference window when all is said and done in this realignment. I'm just going to sit back and let Trachtenburg and Kvancz do the worrying and the legwork on this to put GW in the best possible position. And I have every confidence that they will, even if we are not thrilled with the final result.

I appreciate your optimism Poog, but I just don't see what GW has to offer aside from being in a large market (which is negated threefold by the fact that G'Town already trumps us in every other category). Even if we were a school that had an invogorated student body and alumni base (ala Dayton), then things would be different. But in our good years, we would sell out the Smith Center only a third of our games.

I visited the A-10 message board where a poster said that the A-10 should kick out the Bonnies, Duquesne, LaSalle and Fordham and invite 4 B.E. teams into the A-10. In response a avier fan said why not kick out GW too and invite all 5 B.E. teams. His argument was that the Smith Ctr. was like a high school gym and with G'town in the DC market playing at the MCI Center, why would they need a 2nd DC team? Kind of harsh.

Although I am a pessimist in all of this, my response to the avier fan at the A10 board would be that you would have to kick out St. Joes for that reasoning too. I know St. Joes has been very competitive in recent years, but on a long-term basis, GW should be a better program. And I actually think G'town playing at MCI isn't that much of an advantage. Yes, they are able to draw more (which they always do), but the place is still empty and it simply doesn't lend itself to a great TV backrdop. I honestly can't think of a worse arena to watch a good college basketball game on TV from.

Smith Center is definitely less a high school gym than is St Joe's. Also, I think there is a lot of academia politics and personal relationships in these realignment discussions, not just the obvious athletic things we see on the surface. Plus, there are other sports at these schools that enter the equation in some fashion. I don't begin to understand how this all plays out but I'll continue to stick by and back our Ben-Hurs in this chariot race.

As a Dayton fan I can tell you we have no idea what will shake out of this so called epansion the Big East is mulling over, but for sure anything is possible after the way they clustered the ACC fiasco. How many had a dollar on V.Tech getting in and Cuse and Boston College getting shafted after they'd already agreed to take them both in a unanimous vote? The whole thing hinges on if the two sports split and how many schools to invite when they do. I don't give a rats ass about the football side but I'm definitly concerned what happens with all the b.ball only programs. There's a possibility the two Ohio schools could be out of the A Ten but I've seen many rumors that don't have Dayton included, and in fact also eclude the Muskies. If by chance we do leave, I think the A Ten will survive quite nicely if you can hang onto Temple who'll always be a big name in basketball, and invite a couple of solid schools from maybe C.USA to take over a midwest presence if the league wants to continue having teams out this way in the future. As I said we may still be here when the dust settles so I'm just going to sit back and watch all the goofiness for the net few months and hope whatever happens the ATen stays strong and viable into the future.

I personally have total faith in Jack that GW will not get screwed in this whole process. Since GW was one of the founding teams of the A-10, I don't think that we are going anywhere. I think that some teams from the A-10 will join the newly formed "Great East", but there will actually be more teams taken from USA instead. I think that USA will be defunct within 2 years and the A-10 will take a few teams from there. As far as Georgetown playing in the MCI Center, who gives a crap. They only averaged a little over 5000 fans a game last year at home, while GW averaged 3,900. so they had 1,100 more people at each game, but they were also spending an additional $10-15K for each game played there.
Realignment possibilities

If the BE football and basketball schools split, here's my guess at how things will shake out. The A10 will lose either two or three schools and while it will hurt, I think it will survive and still be a decent conference, especially with teams like GW and LaSalle that have been down recently looking to be much improved over the net few years. Here goes: Big East with 9 teams Georgetown Seton Hall St.John's Villanova Providence Marquette DePaul avier Dayton Big East 10 teams - add UMass Big East 12 teams - add St.Louis and Charlotte If they go to 12 teams, they'll have East and West divisions. UMass covers the Boston market and becomes the 6th school in the East along with the 5 current Big East schools. The other 4 schools 9 are all midwest schools so they would probably bring in St.Louis for travel purposes and Charlotte because they're in a growing market. Villanova will have no parts of Temple, St.Joe's or LaSalle, Georgetown will have no part of GW and Providence will have no part of URI being in their conference. The Big East is all about covering as many markets as possible and they will not want multiple teams in one city. I don't think there's any way Temple gets invited to the football side either. I'm getting the feeling that the BE will go with either a 9 or 10 team conference. If that's the case, the A10 will still be in good shape. If the BE goes with 9 teams, the A10 can decide to not add anyone and remain a decent 10 team league, or you can replace Dayton and avier with Charlotte and your choice of Butler, Western Kentucky, Holy Cross or one of the CAA schools (VCU,ODU,UNCW). If the BE goes with 10 teams and the A10 loses UMass in addition to U & UD, you can bring only Charlotte in for a 10 team league or add any two of the above if you want to keep the two division format. I guess we'll find out soon.

Poog - You know you're probably my favorite poster on this board, but gotta disagree with you about the St Joes Fieldhouse. Small? Yes. High School gym? no way. Place has tremendous character and no bad seat in the house. Easily the loudest place I've ever watched a game in. To me, it's almost the perfect college gym. Smith Center has more seats, but that's about it. On a semi-related note, this year St Joes is the home team for the "Holy War" - the St Joes - Nova game. Usually, when St Joes is home, it's at the Palestra. This year, it will be at the First Union Center as ESPN has picked up the game and demand for ti is already through the roof. St Joes is also in the COaches Vs Cancer and the Pete Newell tourney vs either Cal or Stanford. All this happened once Nelson pulled out of teh draft. At least 1 A10 team will be getting a ton of hype this year...

I made my first visit to the St. Joe's gym this past year. I agree with you Philly that it's a unique place with good seats and acoustics. However, walking through that building and buying my pretzel in the little lobby, and having to go through the side door to get into the facility reminded me of the HS eperience of going past the principal's office, making a right at the wood shop, and going just past the art room and the gym is behind the double doors. At least the Smith Center is a separate edifice. That's what I meant by the reference. And one day, those twins will witness a GW victory in person...at St. Joe's, at the Gola Arena, at the Liacouras Center, or at the Smith Center when they come down for their campus visit.
If Dayton is not safe, what about GW?

Look I know its all about TV and BIG $$. GW is a distant 3RD with small alumni interest (i like every one of you) and even less local pull. We'd be a great get for the MAAC, but I don't see how we make the grade in the current economy to stay as close to the big boys as we are now. So what's Dayton have to do with this? They have serious local support and they got disinvited from the Great Midwest in gentler times. If GW stays competative whatever the fallout I'll be happy, but not that happy.

The really sad thing is that if we'd hired, say, Mike Brey instead of TP, we'd be in a MUCH better position right now.

Are you sure about that? People in the athletic department had a big sigh of relief when Notre Dame beat Maryland- they were etremely worried about playing a Mike Brey-coached team, and one of them told me that Mike Brey was turned down by the administration to return here. The person who told me works with the men's basketball team (and isn't a college kid).

I recall Brey being contacted very early on after Jarvis left. He was putting his name out there and was rumored for everything from Seton Hall to ND. He interviewed a few times with GW but everything was very quiet, then he quickly pulled his name out of the hat and became ND's coach. I'd always heard it was completely Brey's decision, but my memory and information may be incomplete.

prior to the Jarvis hire, Brey wanted GW very badly, but GW considered him too immature. There was an effort of sorts to hire the Damatha coach as head coach, with Brey as assistant head coach and putative successor to Morgan Wooten. Brey and Wootten were both offended, and that was that as far as Mike Brey went. Would he have fit GW? Gee, what do you think? Would he have a likely successor on staff as an assistant? I am guessing yes on that, too. Nothing like choosing uncertainty over certainty, as far as GW's selections since it dumped Bob Tallent.

On the Notre Dame athletic site, it says that Mike Brey was hired on July 2000 @ ND, but that he was not chosen when the job went to Matt Doherty in 1999, so you may be right, Herve.
