The key part of this article for me is that the 5 Big East hoops schools can't start a new league without waiting many years for an automatic bid. That means if there really is a split and the Big East kicks out the 5 Hoops schools, they would almost have to join another league. If the A-10 is willing to dump some of it's dead weight this could be an opportunity for us (and our autmatic bid) to "come to the rescue" of the BE 5. Can you imagine a 14 or 16 team A-10 that's dumped Fordham, SBU and Duquesne and added the BE 5 and maybe DePaul and Marquette. So unlike most of our previous talk, if the BW 5 get left out of the BE, it may be the A-10 that holds the cards and not the BE 5 and Georgetown. There could be an upside to all this.

Not sure what the big deal is over an automatic bid. If you had a conference with the remaining 5 from the Big East, , Dayton, Marquette and Depaul I don't think you are going to need an automatic birth to get some teams into the dance.

I don't think you'd want to start a league and go 5-10 years (which is the time frame I think) without a bid, yeah you're gonna get teams in for men's hoops which is the main factor, but all your other programs will be SOL too and for a lot of non-revenue sports that means there is no chance of getting in. Most sports don't have 64 team tournaments. For eample there are only like 4-8 total at-large bids into the NCAA Lacrosse tournament. Georgetown isn't going to like not being in a league with an auto for LA. Another eample is that there is no way that league ever gets a team into the Baseball NCAA's.

The NCAA can grant an automatic bid before the 5yr waiting period is up. I believe it did so for the WAC (or 1 of those new Western conferences). It would do so based on the strength of the conf. A BE C-USA merged conf should be attractive enough to warrant a bid after a year or two.

That was a really informative article, instead of the gloss over that we're use to seeing. It makes GW's prospects seem a little bit brighter. It appears the B.E. football schools want to lose the basketball schools pretty bad, so my guess is they will offer ND whatever they want to get their vote. Despite the Catholic connection I could see ND voting with the football schools or abstaining. Just a guess though. If a new A-10 emerged with those 5 basketball schools and some C-USA schools, do you think the conference would jettison some teams like Duquesne, Fordham, the Bonnies, and LaSalle to make it so it's not a 20 team conference? My guess is they wouldn't. Perhaps they should set a minimum that the schools must pay in their AD budgets and those who are willing to commit the money can be a part of a new A-10. Wasn't Duquesne kicked out for this reason a few years back? I think it's actually a fair requirement.

We all know that many (but not everyone) would love to see Duquesne and Fordham tossed out of the league. But after that, things get tricky. If there was ever a time to get rid of St. Bonaventure, it was in the spring, but the ADs showed suprising support for the Bonnies. So, I would be skeptical to see the Bonnies go. LaSalle? Their program is on the upswing again (finally), and their ties to the other Philadelphia schools may actually help them stay in. And then who else? If push comes to shove and everyone wants the new 5 from the BE, GW would have to be on the chopping block b/c you must figure that G'town would get its way over us. I'm skeptical the A10 could nab the BE5, and if so, I still think GW loses out.

GW could be on the chopping block, but I think it would have the money and pull to stay in, unlike LaSalle. Maybe to stay GW would have to promise to upgrade the Smith Ctr. Plus GW and G'town could be in separate divisions of the conference. LaSalle is on the upswing (I think they had a better record than GW last year). But could a new conference support 4 teams in Philly? Plus what about good teams like St. Louis and UNC Charlotte who bring in completely new markets? I don't see Villanova accepting teams like St. Joes and LaSalle in a new conference, maybe Temple, but that's about as much of a nightmate scenario as I could imagine for them out of all of this. It's almost as bad as G'town having to join a conference with GW in it. I'm sure the Presidents of these B.E. schools are brainstorming any possible way to avoid all of this and in the end will probably come up with something.

LaSalle did not have a better record last year. They tied with us, but we earned the tie-breaker edge. However, the league made the inane decision to award LaSalle an etra win because they had the good fortune to lose to St. Bona while Terrell was still playing; therefore awarding them the home tourney game we earned.

Duquesne is investing a ton of money into improving its physical plant. The on-campus arena sits a slight more people that the Smith Center, but it is new, doesn't have a bad seat in the place, and is being remodeled- a new weight room for the varsity athletes and a separate weight room is being added. The locker rooms are being totally renovated, and the entire athletic department moved their offices into another building that is only for the them (that building was totally renovated, too), has renovated its aquatic facility, renovated its wrestling practice facility, and has an on-campus football field that is also used for soccer and lacrosse. BTW, the baseball team also uses a major league baseball stadium as its home field in addition to an off-campus one built only for Duquesne. The current administration @ Duquesne has made it a priority to get better in athletics. BTW, Duquesne placed 211 student-athletes on the A10 Academic Honor Roll. GW came fourth with 158.
