Went again today. Symonds (GW) had 7 or 8 players today, including Pinnock, Lucas and Eliot. We also had the same 2 who filled out last weeks team, a skinny white guard/forward from East Carolina and 1 or 2 others. We led just about the entire game and won by about 12. Opponants were much better than last week, but they only had 5 or 6 players. I was again very impressed with Pinnock, especially his ball handling. He is like power forward with point guard moves. Still not shooting from the outside. Lucas reminds me of Nimbo Hammands. I am impressed with his shot and his overall play. He is a scorer. I think Eliot is a player. Had some incredible moves to the basket and showed that he too can hit a 3 point shot. GW will have lots of ball handlers and even more speed this season, if this is indicative at all of the games of these 3 recruits. The game was once again played at a fast pace, with little emphasis on defense. Most impressive player on the court may have been the point guard recruit from George Mason, who played on the other team. Reminded me very much of our TJ with his quickness, vision of the court and 3 point shot. Looking about the same height as TJ, maybe a bit taller (it is really hard to tell heights in this league), he was actually the recipient of an ally oop dunk. Unlike last week, there was more interest in the stands for this game, with larger numbers in attendence. Spoke some with Mr. Symonds before and after the game. Anyone know his connection with GW? A very friendly game who loves talking basketball, especially GW hoops, with anyone who will talk to him. Again, for you junkies, you should be there.

Whoops sorry about the double post.... I was in attendence as well. The word athleticism really doesnt do JR justice. He can jump out of the gym. He was on the recieving end of a sweet alley-oop from carl and just missed on another one. Lucas is the shooter we have been looking for, not as athletic as JR but can still run the floor and is consistent from 3 point range. Carl Elliot is the real deal, great handle, floor vision, can create his own shot, hit the 3, and will have some success posting up smaller point guards. He had some ridiculous moves in traffic and pretty much controlled the whole game. Jaz played on the other team, hit a couple threes but really wasnt much of a factor in the game. The other teams point guard was a player. That alley-oop he threw down was pretty amazing (carl almost blocked it by the way). JR, Ricky, and Carl will all contribute this year, most immediately Elliot I think. He is gonna take a ton of pressure off of TJ this year and I doubt we will see Omar bringing the ball up too much. Mike Hall sat on the bench with a brace on his wrist, didn't appear too serious. If Jaaron can play this recruiting class could be as good if not better then last years.

Oh yeah, JR if you are reading this that windmill you were doing in practice was ridiculous, if you pull that on a break away in a game could go down as on of the greatest dunks ever at Gdub

I also made it to the game and left very impressed. Elliot lived up to all my epectations. He has great size, quickness, vision, and smarts. He is an ecellent ball handler who drives hard through the lane, but can also stick the three. His defense also impressed. He lined up against the opposing point, small forward, and even center (albeit, the Symonds team was a little thin today in size and beef.) He seemed to always be around the ball and came away with two or three steals from the backside. While I agree with LSF that the GM recruit was special and perhaps more flashy (amazing hops for his size), I would say the most complete player on the floor was Elliott. Now, that is no knock on you J.R. if you're reading. J.R. also delivered as advertised. Pinnock is ultra-athletic and has a sick vertical game. He displayed his amazing jumping ability with some vicious dunks during pregame and half and even jumped tipoff. His ball-handling was very effective and he seemed to be hovering round the rim for tip-ins all day. Absolutely pure energy! The ealier comparison to a smaller version of Pops was right on. Lucas is definitely smooth. He is not as flashy as Elliott or Pinnock, but he blends in nicely with the flow of the game. He already possesses a sweet mid-range stroke that will hopefully etend to beyond the arc shortly. While he hit a couple of threes, he didn't seem to have the same consistency in his release. However, you can see he has a scorer's mentality and seems unphased as he keeps looking for his shot. I believe smooth Ricky quietly hit for 15 pts. All in all, the freshmen trio have differing styles but their games compliment each other quite well. I can't wait to see their skils mied in with last year's returnees as well as Lafonte and Rock. As for Coach Symonds, you gotta love his enthusiasm and spirit. It's definitely contagious. Who needs a program or play by play guy when he's coaching. He's that vocal. Mike Hall joined the team on the bench sporting a small wrist brace. Hopefully, nothing serious. I know it's only summer league and I am sure I am overdosing on the the campus Cool-Aid, but I left this afternoon very optimistic.

Was Jazz the one with cornrows? He was light skinned, like Jazz, and nobody else seemed to fit his discription. They only had 5 or 6 players, and I know he wasn't one of the guards or the big fat center. Also, do you know who #2 was on the other team? He seemed like a nice all around player? Didn't the Mason recruit remind you of TJ? How tall did you think he is? While the similarities between JR and Pops are obvious, Pops is bigger and probably stronger but cannot handle the ball, pass or create anything like JR.

LSF-I am not sure what number Jaz was for the other team. GWA2001 noted that he saw him. I did like #2's game, though. The Mason recruit might have been taller than TJ but not by much. They did have similar games, but the Mason guy may be a slight step quicker and TJ appears to have a better jumper. However, I don't want too speculate too much after just one game. Did you see the Mason kid try to jam driving the lane through traffic of 2or3 guys? Missed the dunk, but showed a lot of courage. As for the comparsion between J.R. and Pops, it was strictly based on athletic ability and energy. Both players seem to bring it all the time and boost the rest of the team with their spirited play. No doubt, Pops is bigger and plays the 4 or 5 while J.R. is more suited for the 2 or 3 with his ball handling.

Thanks for sharing all the good news. I'm still trying to not get to ecited. This year's basketball team sure sounds like it could run just about anybody into the ground, if it can play good defense. We didn't see a lot of that last year.

Yeah the lighter skinned guy with the corn rows on the other team was Jaz. Didn't get the ball much but showed a decent jumper. Anyone know who the other guy on Symonds was with the headband? It was tough to get a read on how tall our guys are. Carl, Ricky, and JR are all about the same height it looked like, in the 6'4, 6'5 range I think.

Not to jump too far ahead but it seems like an NIT bid is already an achievable goal for this season. I know these Kenner League games aren't meant to be taken too seriously, but we're talking about adding these new Freshman players to a GW team that could already field a decent starting 5 with the returning players. Of course there are a lot of ifs. In my opinion the main question this year is the same as last, will Tamal be totally healthy? Also, how much improvement will we see from Hall, Pops and Omar? Monroe was a great player, but it just seems like all of these Freshman will make GW a more talented team than last year. I can already see Elliot starting in the backcourt with TJ, and Tamal, Hall and Pops in the frontcourt, with a bench that has pretty strong back-ups at every position. Can Hobbs mold them all into a team and build some chemistry? If he can, I think this coming season will be a lot better than the last few, all of which have been pretty painful.

Thanks to GWAlum and MSC for information. Don't want to be debating starting lineups yet, but...I see Lucas starting as a freshman. Even from Kenner League games, you can see he is a versitile scorer who can shoot a three, which is just what this team needs with the loss of Monroe. (No, I am not saying he will be replacing Monroe's numbers yet). Front court will somewhat be dictated by opposition, especially as it relates to playing time for Tamal. Again, can't say too much about the athleticism on this team, with Pops, Omar, Mike, Lucas, Pinnock, Eliot, TJ.

I am not ready to predict the starting lineup, but you gotta love the projected depth at guard. Last year we were lucky to have 4 man rotation once Miller went down -T.J., Chris, Greg, and Omar (perhaps out of position). This year Hobbs can choose from T.J.,Carl, J.R., Ricky, Lafonte, Greg and still keep Omar at small or point forward. The added depth should keep the team fresh, help cut down on tired turnovers, maintanin their legs for late game perimeter shooting, improve defensive match-ups, and allow the team to press more.

A couple of people have asked about Number 2 (with the headband) on the Myers and Alterman team (Jaz Cowan's team). He is Kevin Mickens who will be attending George Mason as a juco transfer in the Fall. The other Mason player people have mentioned is Tony Skinn, who will be entering Mason as a Sophomore in the Fall.
