Non-conference schedule
8/12/2003 11:58:00 AM
Poster: Kleos

Not sure if anyone has posted a link to ooc schedule yet. Most of these games may have been discovered already, but if nothing else, it provides some gist for conversation. It would be nice if the game at Teas could be picked up by a regional broadcast at least. Since the time isnt set yet, that is presumably what they are hoping for. As stated by someone else, I think the Big Red should consisently invite George Mason and American. This years slate doesnt have much of a storyline.

Two games against Ap State? That seems odd. Do we really have to do home-and-home with them to play in the Red? App State plays La Salle too at the Paradise Jam. No other A-10 teams though.

Maybe I'm completely off base here, but what interest does it serve for us to play at Fairfield and at App State? You mean to tell me there is absolutely no other team in the nation, none of the 316 other D-1 teams, that we could play on the road that might actually help our RPI? If we want to be noticed, which I'm debating if that's the case after this ridiculous schedule, we're really going the opposite way. I understand we can't book top teams in Smithy, and with that, the Red, obviously. But why are we playing low-level D-1 teams on the road? Anyone?

Could App State be a potential new A-10 team? Yeah, I doubt it too. I can´t remember GW scheduling a non-conf team twice in the same season before. Kind of sad. But I have to think the braintrust looks at it this way: Like SUNY-B last year, the games at Fairfield and App State will be those schools´ big home game of the year, with the crowds pumped and the joint jumping. What better atmosphere for a young squad to get its ducks in order before the conference season? GW used to play Fairfield occasionally in the 80´s (remember seeing a hack-fest in New Meico during the 1-27 season, which was too bad because GW had only 8 healthy bodies and couldn´t afford to foul guys out) and the Stags are not a bad opponent for a frosh-heavy team coming off a losing season (and losing its top scorer). While there is STILL no CA or New Orleans trip on the slate (and as a fan of road trips I MUST protest at that), it looks like a harder non-conf than I´d have epected (at Teas, at UNC-C, WVU etc...). Of course, I don´t plunk down $$$$ for season tickets to see App State and Towson, so maybe I shouldn´t complain.

Very disappointing. I agree that one of the App. St. games has to be an error because if we had really scheduled them in the Red, you'd think that we'd not be playing them in the first round in hopes that we could aviod playing them twice.

What really disappoints me is the fact that we only have 4 non-conf. home games -- 2 of which are the Red. Why so few?

Last year some plausibly eplained the schedule as being designed to give Hobbs fleibility for this year, but after two straight years of few home games and playing teams on the road that don't have much PR upside, I'm curious to hear speculation about the philosphy behind our schedule.

The second game against ASU is correct -- it's on their website as well.

The reason is simple. The way we get teams into the Red is to pay them or play them at their place. Some schools want the money, some want the game. If we do the game this year instead of net, so what?

That leads to why AU and GMU have minimal or no interest in the Red. They can make more playing in a more major tournament somewhere else or just taking an away game with a more major school for a bigger payment. And, in the case of AU, we are willing to play them home and home anyway. Besides that, if we value our unbeaten streak in the Red, any area team presents a real threat because they would clearly be up for the game.

And finally, any one who thinks our RPI is important this year clearly spent too much time watching Fantasy Island. We haven't been over .500 in five years -- let's walk before we run.

Lowpost, good to know your ambitions are limited. I disagree, though. From this year forward our goal should be the NCAAs. That may be a stretch, but the NIT is certainly a legit aspiration and the RPI does make a little difference on that front (even if it's mainly about money).

years ago GW and Marshall played each other twice in one year. Marshall at Ft. Myer, after GW went to Marshall to lose a tourney game. Marshall used to be a decided home court advantage. Likely still is, and I bet ASU is too. That's why I prefer GW make STETSON one of its designated opponents. Its a Big Name School (no heehaws now), yet we can beat them like some old hat. Don't like STETSON? St. Leo's is just tooooo obvious. How about VMI and The Citadel?

At least according to their schedule. I agree with the sentiment that playing Appalachian State twice in one year is bizarre. Surely of the 300 plus D-1 basketball schools we could have gotten someone to come to the Big Red without us having to return the trip the very same year. Perhaps we used the allure of a trip to Appelachian State as a recruiting vehicle. Think about how much the American dollar could by on there.

Note that we play them twice only if they beat W&M in the first game (and of course, we win over St. Francis). App State averaged 84 points a game last year (2nd in nation?) and had a 19-10 record. Their RPI was higher than the other Red teams, ODU, Towson, FIU... and GW. Thankfully, they lost most of their team to graduation so we may be spared a nasty surprise.

I guess my question is why is scheduling teams for the Red so important? It doesn't appear to be a big money maker for GW where hungry local alum can finally get tickets into the Smitty because students aren't around for the holiday. I missed the tourney during those years when it wasn't being played but I'm not sure that those 2 OOC games add much luster to the program to the point that it's important to agree to a home and home in the same year. I agree with the idea that this team needs to learn to play together and win some games but I'm afraid I must join those who lament the fact that we can no longer legitimately poke fun at Georgetown's Hostess Cupcake schedule. Ours appears to be a Twinkie.

This returns us to the question I posited a few posts ago- why even bother having the Red Auerbach tourney then? I can understand playing one of those schools; however, when American wants to play home-and-home and a local rivalry is available to the taking, I don't understand. I am of the belief that you play the best in order to be the best- maybe playing this type of schedule will get more OOC wins, but the big question is will that schedule challenge the team for the real important games, the conference games?

Agree with the sentiment that the Big Red may have outlived its usefullness. I vote to make it a local tourney by tell AU, Howard, Towson, UMBC that the only way we meet is at the RED. If they say no, it's their loss.

If it can't become local tradition, end it net year. 2 home/home w/ the likes of Creighton, Bowlning Green, Davison, Holly Cross, VCU, Marshall, WKU, SFU, Butler, Detroit, Siena, Eastern MI, etc, etc, etc (yes, even Steton) would be much more interesting and productive than the low level garbage their shiping into the Smith Center these days.

Would be nice if American is in the Red tourney; ditto if Navy is in the Red tourney, too. That would be nice if the Red tourney could be a mini-version of the BB&T tourney- for the BB&T you have GW and U of MD; for the Red you have GW and American/Navy every year. I wrote that in the previous thread "Couple of Things". Even suggested putting UDC in place of Navy if Navy didn't want to play in it. Having a annual tourney between Howard, UDC (since Georgetown won't play), American, and GW sounds good to me. Heck of a lot better than any of the tourney fields from either this year or past years. Unfortunately, if it goes this way, Poog can't hoist the championship trophy and have a later catered dinner in the AD club (just playing with you, Poog.)

Can we please stop talking about getting AU, Navy and GMU at the Red. I've been reading posts about have a "local" Red field for years now. Do you think we've got St. Francis because we'd rather have them than Navy or AU. Those local schools do not want to play in the Red and they won't no matter how many times some one posts here that they should. Howard is just low enough on the D I food chain that they'll take the game. We aren't getting AU and Navy at the Red, plese stop posting it like it's a new idea and no one has thought of it yet. A couple of things on the scheduling front. While I agree with "The Smith Center" that talking about having a local Big Red is ridiculous, clearly we can't get those teams. And ziik is correct when he says that as long as Red is around so will the tournament and I think that it will probably have to eist even for a while after he's not around. Still there has got to be something we can do about it.

Why does this tournament need to be on Thanksgiving break? My memory may be failing me but I'm pretty sure that in the Karl Hobbs regime we have had 3 OOC games at the Smittie (including 2 this year) while the students were not on Thanksgiving or Christmas break. Not only is this stupid, because it negates the little homecourt advantage that the students bring, but I also find it to be highly insulting, I think it shows a complete lack of consideration for a group KH should be trying to pull in.. On the plate this year, Towson and Fla. International, oooh that is an eciting lineup.

Secondly, why in the hell isn't American on this schedule. We are forced to play little App. State in a home and home to get them to come to the Big Red, but American gets to play us at there gym, without ever making the trip to the Smittie...That really bugs me...

I'm glad we have Teas on the schedule, and trips to Fairfield and Appalachain St. don't really bug me, hopefully those are a couple of W's...So the schedule is not a complete disaster. In the end I feel like our hands our tied with the BB&T and the Big Red and the schedule is not going to work in our favor until something is done about it (or we put a couple of really good seasons together, but hey I'd settle for one of those)...

Tim4: You're absolutely right about AU getting us to go to their high-school gym with obviously nothing in return. Since when does AU have greater pull than us? I notice every year they play a few nice OOC games, at Florida St, Penn, Villanova, Florida, Cincinnati. Seems like we're saying, "hey, we have one Top 25 OOC game plus the BB&T, that's all we need." What an absurb route to take. This team needs to be noticed, not tucked into a little corner of the world such as wherever the hell App St is. I've noticed a lot of you have said they want eplanations for this schedule. Consider me part of that group.

The Red is going to stay; for some sick reason, Kvancz and the rest of the cigar boys in the athletic dept. look at it as an homage to Red Auerbach, even though I think the old man would wretch sitting through any one of these games. So, since we're stuck with two cupcake games (hopefully), let's try to schedule a less brutal Temple road schedule. There has been a great deal of discussion on how many top-level teams won't take us in their building because we could beat them. Well...I think that perception has drifted away, and even if it hasn't, since when are we more scary than Temple? Ever? If they can schedule games at Penn St, Wisconsin, Indiana, UCLA, Syracuse, etc, why in the name of Lewie Helton can't we?

I've racked my brain trying to figure out our goals in playing at these horrible sites with likely less than 2,000 people and no TV/radio/electricity. I've scrapped up nothing. Ecept there's some ultra-wealthy GW booster that happens to have an unhealthy love of App St basketball, and lives in Fairfield, while his son goes to Fla Intl and daughter goes to Towson. So there...anyone have better ideas?

I have no problem with the Auerbach tournament. Get to see a basketball double header, and nothing wrong with having a couple of bunnies on the schedule that guarantees us the two wins, even though one team is usually better than epected. And, if you look at the attendence numbers the last couple of years, they are comparable or even higher than other home games (sad but true). Although I find it a nice Thanksgiving weekend activity, I would enjoy the games more when the students, dancers, cheerleaders, band, etc. are around, so I wish it was some other weekend. Otherwise, bring on the SUNY Binghamptons, Appalachian States and Yales, and Go Colonials!

Two games vs. App. State in the same year is a real bummer. If it wasn't for the BB&T, our OOC schedule would look more like a IUPUI schedule than a traditional GW schedule. There was a time when we complained that no one wanted to play us. Now only nobodys want to play us. It is certainly time for us to get rid of the "good" losses, because these wins aren't going to do us much good in preparation for conference play.

Wake me up when conference season starts. Admittedly I have no idea what it takes to construct a schedule, and I have no doubt it is difficult, if not impossible, to get good teams to play in the Smith Center, but come on now. If we are going to play these god awful squads lets at least make them local. If they won't do only one at the Smith Center, then at least do a home and away with George Mason and American(where is our home game?)and Navy. Go on the road to a big ten or PAC 10 school if we have to. At least we have Teas, but our schedule still compares favorably with Fordham and the Pittsburgh Dukes. Disappointing.

I agree with Smith Center that the suggestion of local teams in the Red has been discussed ad nauseum on this board. Where we differ is that I believe the members of this board should make it known that we would rather, horror of all horrors risk defeat in the Big Red, than schedule absolute cupcakes. I find it completely unbelievable that some form of local gathering could not be arranged. American, Howard, and George Mason have all played in our gym in the last five years. They have done so willingly and without GW providing an outlandish dowry of comely dancers. It is my feeling that for whatever reason the insistence on winning the Red is driving the schedule. Big time programs dont always win their invitationals, see Kentucky two years ago as an eample. Losses in team hosted tourneys happen. Big deal. It's not like our winning the Red garners much attention, at least with other local schools we'd get some attention. So maybe letting the muckety mucks know our position would help. Methinks this seasons lightweight and unknown teams may have Hobb's fingerprints all over them. Maybe he's figuring net year the ante could be upped.

If this is true and keeping the earlier debate over Jarvis era in mind, I'll take those days back desperately. We weren't afraid to play real D 1 teams. This schedule would make Craig Esherick happy or even his moronoic moral-free mentor. Was St. Leo's too much in demand to snare for us. Playing Fairfield at Fairfield is plain stupid. If we are going to play a team like that, why not at home? This is really a weird schedule. Let's hope we are not counting on the RPI for anything, because it looks like we are in the 300's in out of conference schedule strength.
