For those of you who don't know, these previews are written by an A-10 fan who does a pretty good job of being objective (although he tends to overrate his team, UMASS, a little in the pre-season) -- unlike most reporters, he actually reviews game tapes so that his previews are educated and worthwhile. In a separate thread on the A-10 board, he predicts GW to go 16-13, 8-8. Unfotunately, that 8-8 finish still leaves us 5th in the West in his book.

Gotta love the reference to our brutal OOC schedule. Is Amherst playing UMass? Always instructive to read WH's observations. I still believe that Elliott is the one baby Colonial who will have the biggest impact but the proverbial time will tell.

For a team that lost all 8 A-10 road games last year, Poog, I'd say a GW visit to Amherst might pose a problem. Such is basketball life away from home! (-:

That was a nice win, Free, although it merely evened up the season series, didnt it? I seem to recall UMass beating GW in DC. I epect GW to be better than UMass, but the Minutemen are good enough to beat the Colonials in Amherst. Young guys and the road arent the greatest mi!

It only evened up the season series if you consider the A-10 tourney equally important as a mid-season game. I'm not predicting a win at this point at UMASS, but GW outplayed them last year for most of both games. A bad last couple of minutes for GW (a sign of their youth) and some questionable late-game coaching by Hobbs helped give UMASS the win at Smith Center, and then we got them in the big game in the A-10 tourney. This year, we still are still young, but I think UMASS is less eperienced. I wouldn't count that game as a W for UMASS yet.

I am not counting any game as an automatic W for UMass this year, Free. Just going by the book and pointing to the difficulty most teams have of winning on the road. UMass is good enough to beat GW at home. They lost some players, but guys like Rogers and Brand had their own baggage. It should be an interesting game. In my view, GW has to win it, and the players will know it. The last win at UMass should give them confidence. IF I had to bet, straight up, who I think would win, right now I would go with the Colonials. They are my darkhorse team for net season.

Hobb's can beat up on the Towsons and Boston Universities on the road, but to get to the net level, Hobbs has to show he can at least beat LaSalle, St. Bonaventure, Fordham, Rhode Island, and Duquesne on the road. Duquesne has crushed GW the past two years @ Duquesne.

Great preview that hits the nail on the head. Just one correction, GW beat on the road ecept that Linda´s refs added an etra 0.1 seconds to the game so that the conf.´s one contender wouldn´t be pegged with a late season loss to an also-ran.

I've been at the last 2 men's games in Pittsburgh against Duquesne. We did not get crushed by them last year; in fact, I believe we had a lead at halftime. Besides, results of the last 2 years aren't necessarily indicative of what this year's more eperienced and vastly superior talent will do. I remain of the belief that GW AS A TEAM will do better without Monroe around clogging the lanes and needing the ball. No knock on Chris...I just think the lineup will be more productive with better distribution.

WH, if GW is your choice for darkhorse, why do you have LaSalle finishing ahead of them? Aren't you having it both ways by picking GW to finish behind, but dubbing them the darkhorse candidate over LaSalle anyway?

I make my picks based on the finish in A-10 play. LaSalle has an easier sked and an easier opening to league play. That's what ultimately dictates where I place teams. It does not necessarily follow that one is better than the other, especially when losses in league are so close. The other reason I pick LaSalle is because I think they have a better backcourt, which I think is key in A-10 play. GW is an anomaly for our league. A hugely talented team in the frontcourt. That said, if Thompson improves as a "point" guard and, say, Collucci nails down the two-guard, GW will surpass LaSalle. That means Collucci has to start hitting his shots again and adapt to a supporting role of opening the inside for the big men. The difference between LaSalle and GW, at this point, appear to be very small. I do think that GW, with greater talent and depth, has greater upside potential. But I do go a bit by the "book" - even if its my book -- in making my predictions.

WH, I don't think the season will ride on Collucci's back at all this season. Hobbs has some talented recuits coming in this year (we've heard this before, I know), so I think Collucci will have to fight hard to get significant minutes. I will admit you've been on target far more that I have, but my preview of Pinnock, Lucas and Elliot leads me to think of them as big time contributor's by January.

You are right, BC that GW's success doesn ride on Collucci's back. Yet I still think this would be a much better team if he returned to form and won the starting role. He should be mature enough to help settle down a young team and, if his shot is back, provide the necessary outside punch to open the inside for the bigmen. One of the problems I see for the Colonials is that they have too many bigname players out of high school. Everybody is young and everyone will want shots. It would help to have an upperclassman willing to accept his role and be a complementary part. I look at GW's backcourt this way. What a young team needs, more than anything else, is stability in the backcourt. That means a point guard who doesnt turn it over and gets other players involved. Clearly, TJ still has some learning to do in both areas. For a shooting guard, the hardest thing to learn is what is a good shot. Implicitly, that means knowing when to dump it in to the big guys, when to move to get open, and when to actually take the shot. Collucci, being senior, could really help out because of his eperience. If he isnt shooting well, however, the new guys will have plenty of opportunity. Still, I firmly believe GW would be a better team if Collucci played to his potential and won the starting role. No matter how good the other young shooting guards are, they will make a lot of mistakes of youth. You saw what that did to GW last year. GW has enough youth already. They need some eperience, too.
