We were driving south at about Eit 3, and I picked up a Phillies postgame show on the radio. Richie Ashburn was interviewing some Latino ballplayer -- sorry I can't recall who .. and in an attempt at sympathy, noted that the player had broken his wrist in two places earlier in the season.

To which the guy responded, "Si. I broke it at Shea Stadium and in Cincinnati."

Meant to add the classic line by the Tampa Bay Bucs coach (was it John Robinson or some other e-California-based college coach?). Just after the team's 26th consecutive loss (the first 26 cames in their history), he was asked "What do you think of your team's eecution?" The answer: "I'm all for it."

Back in the late 70's to early 80's, the Flyers had a goalie, Pete Peters. One night, after a big win, he was interviewed live from the locker room on the 11:00 news. Looked like he had just gotten out of the shower as he was naked, at least from the waist up. As he's talking, it looked like the camera was drifting south. I guess the camersman finally woke up and it thankfully stopped going lower. They go back to the station, and the sports guy comments on how great Pete Peters has been. They then go to the weather and the weatherguy (the late Jim O'Brian) states: "For a second there, I thought we were about to find out how great Pete Peters really is!"

My freshman year ('95), we beat Umass up in Amherst when they were ranked #1. Following the game, ESPN interviewed Shawnta, who said that the reason GW was successful was that "we went after their juggler," as opposed to the jugular.

Poog's Bill Stern reference (for the blissfully younger set, Stern was a sportscaster and author of a book called Bill Stern's Favorite Sports Stories) brings to mind a classic story on Stern himself.

He was given to naming the wrong player on key football plays: e.g. "Jones breaks free. He's at midfield! The 40! The 30! The 20!" At that point the spotter whispers in his ear, and Stern picks up with "... and he laterals to Smith who takes it in for si."

So anyway, one year Stern is tapped to fill in for the great Clem McCarthy on the radiocast of the Kentucky Derby. The American Sportswriters Association sends him a congratulatory telegram, and adds the caution: "Be careful, Bill. It's difficult to lateral a jockey."

One of my favoties, made better because it's GW-related. As told by Jayson Williams, I think in SI: It's the end of a Nets game, and they're getting blown out, and Jayson Williams, Yinka Dare and Benoit Benjamin are sitting net to each other on the bench, killing the final minutes. Yinka notices the 'C' on an opposing player's jersey--I think it was John Stockton, but memory fails--and asks Williams: Y: Jayson, was does the 'C' on his jersey stand for? J: (curious as to where this will lead) I don't know, Yinka, what do you think it stands for? Y: (after a pause) Caucasian? B: (breaking up upon overhearing this): Man, that Yinka sure is crazy! Everybody knows Caucasian stars with a 'K'!

...when Charles Mann intentionally "eposed" himself during a post-win locker room press conference. He actually put one leg up on the bench so everyone could get a good view. There's got to be some truth to "size matters" for some women, considering the dazed looks from the female anchors and calls to various radio stations the net morning asking for dates with Charles.

This is a good thread. It's a story also involving the late great Richie Ashburn from the '62 Mets. There was a Teas Leaguer and Ashburn comes charging in from centerfield and Elio Chacon, who didn't speak English, goes charging back from 2nd base. Ashburn yells "I've got it." Chacon runs him over because he didn't understand. Between innings, Richie asks Joe Christopher, who also spoke Spanish, what he should yell. Yo lo tengo. Two innings later -- same thing -- Richie yells: "Yo lo Tengo." Elio backs off -- Ashburn gets flattened by left fielder Frank Thomas, who didn't know what "yo lo tengo" meant. He told that story at his induction at Cooperstown.

Of course, there were several great stories in Bouton's Ball Four. My favorite was Jim Pagliaroni (sp), the second string catcher for the Seattle Pilots. The guys were on a plane talking about the most difficult thing a major league ballplayer has to do. One guy said it's hitting a knuckleball. The third baseman said fielding a slow roller; an outfielder said going straight back on a line drive. Pags said, "no fellas, the hardest thing a big leaguer has to do is eplain to his wife why she needs penicillin injections for your bladder infection."
