Kathy Orton---boo

Hey all, Quickly my only question about the crazy substitutions has already been asked by someone (GWDad?)...Why can't Pops and Tamal be on the same floor?? I felt like pops on the high post and Tamal on the low post was effective last year...Does anyone disagree with that? If so why?

Secondly, Kathy Orton came up to me yesterday and said something to the tune of "Ugh, I hate these fans. I've been trying to quit covering this team for years. These are the worst fans around." When pressed for why she added, "I just hate them, they don't cheer and they're vulgar." Kathy, maybe you could start covering "better" teams if your stories on the GW games weren't half retarded...In her defense, someone did come up and heckle her after the game, which may be part of the reason she hates the fans...Happy thanksgiving everybody.

Maybe this is a dumb question but who does Kathy Orgon write for, never heard her name before?....and what the hell is she talking about when she says the crowed is vulgar. The only chant the student section did that was negative towards FIU was the tighty-whites chant for the big guy who had his jersey tucked into underwear while he was shoting FTs. And that was just funny as hell, even the FIU fans were laughing at that chant.

Orton writes for the Post and I understand that she graduated from Gdub. As for vulgarity, I've rarely heard any on our side of the Smithy (blue seats). The students say unkind things once in a while but nothing terrible as far as I know. One interesting thing, however: the PA announcer, for the first time in my memory, asked people at the game not to make racist or seual comments (I think that's hoew he put it), rather than a more general warning about behavior. Maybe something is happening that I don't know about.

Kathy Orton is just pissed she got moved off press row -and rightfully so. Why should she take up space when she writes about three sentences a game? Granted the Post editors may dictate this but her writing is poor and she makes factual errors. So I say it's great that Kathy thinks we have the worst fans - at least now we've got something to go along with the worst sportswriter and worst newspaper. The feeling is mutual Kathy!

Sounds like Kathy is dissapointed in not moving forward at the Post, which usually is less likely a problem with the beat than a problem with writing skills. Maybe she'd feel better if we fed her well before games (the food in the AD's Club absolutely SUCKED last night -- salad, corn, pasta and jambalaya-- haven't they heard of Atkins or The Zone?). Maybe Cathy doesn't care for Mark Plotkin (who now sits in the Blue Seats just behind her). We do have some die-hard fans in the mid-court blue seats that can use some pretty vulgar language towards the referees; they'd give Robin Ficker a run for his money, but they usually aren't hard on the players. I've always thought that if we could get them toned down, GW might be a nice place to bring your kids to a game, but considering where they sit I'd imagine they give quite a bit of cash to the AD's club. I was pretty nasty myself to certain referees (in GW Intramural Sports) as a young lad but am now much more well behaved since I sit near Red, Chernak, Dom and Jack and their families. FYI --The pre-game announcement is an A-10 sanctioned script.

GW Basketball and the Washington Post is a hate/hate relationship if I've ever seen one. I think GW fans are pretty tough but not vulgar. A good number of the students are also hockey fans from the Northeast. Perhaps Kathy should go to a NJ Devils or a NY Rangers game to see where a lot of GW fans are coming from.

Quick search on "Shawnta Rogers" in the Post archives has a bunch of 1,000 to 2,000 word articles by Wilbon, Feinstein, Delinger et al writing on our Colonials (I know that may sound unbelievable to new fans). I think we had fair coverage when we won consistently, but face it, we've stuck the joint up for quite a few years now.

Not to sound like a Post apologist, but just a couple of FACTS: 1. The students yelling "Bulls..t" (without the omitted dots) at most fouls called on our players may be widespread in college ball, but it's still jarring to many of us. 2. Orton has been a strong supporter of the GW women's team for several years, and yes, guys, the women do represent our university.

The legitimate beef is with the sports editor(s) at the Post, not with Kathy Orton.

Orton was probably referring to one fan in particular - sitting in the second row of the blue seats, far right section (if you are facing the court from the seats). This fan was all over Omar from his first touch - banging, screaming, flailing body parts, and pretty much humiliating himself by taunting a nice kids who tries hard. Not sure if that fan posts here, but he should be ashamed of himself and just shut his mouth. The team doesn't need that negativity and neither does Omar. That helps nobody and just bothers everyone around him, including Orton I'm sure. (Also, Hatchet posted their article last night)

LSF does not sit on the right side. Now, I ride the refs pretty hard, tho some in my section ride them just as hard. Kathy used to sit in front of us, but now she's in a corner, all by herself, and no bluse seats behind her. And one of the major reasons FIU was close was some pretty lousy calls for most of the second half. First they were calling invisable walks on us, tho I'm sure there were some real walks. Add that to the real walks that FIU got away with very close to started the roll. One time an FIU player had the ball, left the floor with both feet and came back down without dribbling. No call.

FIU's big guys were all over our guys, taking balls away while on our guys backs. their arms wrapped around ours. So I spent a lot of time asking them if they knew the rules about walking. I called thei lousy refs. Now I have cut down my swearing to relatively little. So maybe vulgar is defined as riding the refs?

Unfortunately BC, I find that you are often way out line with you criticisms of the refs. Both at the games and almost every post game message you write includes complaints about the refs as if they have it in for GW. Believe me they don't. Having played basetball for many years and coached a little amateur ball, I always felt that the fans that complained about the refs all the time understood the game the least. They blame the refs for the team's defeat with little understanding themsleves of the game. They also don't understand that most of the refs calls (and non-calls) are split second decisions with no time to think about which team is most adversely affected. So please back off the abuse, both at the games and in your posts.

Now if I could stop being who I am, I would happily shed my ranting at refs. And I know their job is hard. But I know what a walk is, and I'm pretty sure I know when one player is draped over another.

If one watched Duke or another highly ranked behind a lower ranked team, you will find that in the second half, the lower ranked team starts committing really cheap fouls and the Dukes can slap the ball, wrists and other body parts without a foul being called.

I don't necessarily think they do it deliberately, but they can be quite subjective in therir calls.

GW is not Duke and the ref's couldn't care less whether GW wins or loses. Not everytime someone is touched is a foul. There is no bias either way regarding GW. The ones that always complain about the referring don't understand the game and use it as an ecuse when their team loses. It gets old.

Getting back to the original theme of the post, I must agree with Kathy Orton. I worked for the SAC- Spirit Office last year. Unfortunately, quite a few ,and more than people on this board may think, people in the blue seats use blue (no pun intended) language, are very derogatory towards the student-athletes, and were the first ones to bitch and whine when little kids would be chosen over an adult for a free t-shirt. The student section, yes, can get offensive, but, unfortuantely, that is to be epected. However, there have been many a game when the students are encouraging, along with the cheerleaders and the dance team, to stand up and active support the team in a positive way. With the eception of the St. Joseph's game, in which one veteran blue seater told the Spirit Director "Write this down: This is a first in GW history that the blue seat section is actually standing up", the blue seat section either continues with its rants and vents, looks at the student section like it has lost its mind, or just sits on their hands and is quiet ecept when to yell at the refs. Some of you may respond by saying this is not true, or that I'm totally off base- I was on the sidelines of the floor for every men's and women's basketball game last year, and I am stating first-person point of view evidence of what I saw.

I guess Kathy has never been to a redskin's game. But one thing RS should note (I don't ride players BTW) those same people who yell at the refs, standup and cheer the team on when a good play happens, while much of rest of the blue seats sit in a stupor.

I do not like riding the referees as I think that more often than not, the referees are used as an ecuse for poor play by the team. (The only things that get on my nerves relating the referees are inconsistency, too many touch fouls and being out of position to make the call). While I might not be one, I still get a big kick out of the referee riders, many of whom sit in my general vicinity. Same for many of the guests whom I bring with me to the game. Most of it is clever and funny, and I think comes with the home court. It also comes with the job of being a referee. My favorite: when a referee told one particularly effective heckler that he would meet him outside after the game. I have never heard this heckler or any of the others using vulgar language. Still, the hecklers are part of my enjoyable GW eperience. I swear, one heckler gets so upset that his skin changes colors, to a bright red, only to change back when composure is regained in a few seconds. Even though BC appears to be off base on many of his complaints, I revel at his sincerity and thoroughly enjoy the passion of his beliefs, as he truly believes we play each game 8 vs. 5. As for heckling the players on either side, please, just don't do it. Boo and jeer unsportsmanlike conduct of a player, but leave it at that. They really are just students.

I have defended Kathy Orton before and I will do it again. I work on the stat crew at games and I have know Kathy for years and consider a great friend of mine and of GW hoops. I am not calling you a liar Tim but I would be shocked if Kathy said that she has been trying to get out of doing GW games for years. That is not the Kathy Orton that I know. She is an alum and a big GW fan and she has never said anything negative to me about covering our games. In fact she preferes our games to the other local colleges that she covers. I'll ask her about it today at the Red (if she is assigned to us this weekend). If you were adding that quote in for emphasis I think you may have gone too far.

I am also suprsised that as a memvber of the student media you would so outwardsly attactk Kathy and her writing. She reads this board and you are now going to have to sit near or net to her for the rest of the year. I don't find that behavior very professional. You'll will find that int he uber-competitive field of sports media you need all the friends and contacts you can get. Burning bridges with someone who writes for the biggest print media outlet in our market is not a good idea.

Finally Kathy asked to be moved down to the end of press row, she was not moved there against her will, and she does tire of the handfull of fans that sit behind her in the first few rows of the Blue Seats. I have to admit that there are times that I feel the same way. I think when you sit in those seats every game of every year and you hear the same handfull of fans making the same old jokes and screaming the same old insluts at referee it can get tiring. I agree that the A-10 does not have the best officials and there are several times a game that I wish I could yell something at them. However, just hearing the same people complain about the same things (some deserving and others not) over and over can get real old real fast. It's just a fact of life that comes with sitting on press row. Those fans have a right to cher/complain at games, just like Kathy has the right to try and not hear it if she doesn't like it. It has gotten under Kathy's skin and she prefers to sit on the base line where she can't hear that handfull of fans. I can easily see her saying that to Tim4, but I just can't believe that she would make a comment about trying to get out of doing GW games. Even if Kathy felt that way (and she has told me the opposite several times), she is a GW grad and far to smart to tell student radio that she doesn't like working our games.

I just don't understand why so many posters on this board keep attacking the small handfull of people hat actually support GW. Turn you venom to Georgetown or Maryland or avier, even the refs. But at least once a quarter someone decides to blame Kathy Orton or Brad Bower or Dom Perno or God knows who's net (maybe it's the golf coach's fault) for our struggles. I don't get it.

Negative fans can be annoying, like the two dudes who often sit in front of me in the student section and complain and yell at our players the whole time. If you don't like the players, don't come, or shut up, in my opinion. Having our fans telling our players they suck won't help.

Golf Coach- I have no real beef with Kathy personally, I wish she would write more complete stories, but I am aware most of the fault regarding lack of GW coverage lies with the editors.

My point is,I have no reason to come onto this board and make something like that up. This was only the 2nd or 3rd time I've ever spoke to her. She could have been in a bad mood, or there could be any number of reasons for her comment. Yet, she came right up to me, unprovoked and said "I've been trying to quit covering this team for years" and then said something derogatory about the fans.

I wish nothing but the best for Kathy, I hope that a successful GW season will lead to better coverage from the Post. I did think it was worth mentioning on this board though, because she plays a rather important role in the GW basketball community as a "beat" writer of sorts for the Colonials. my two cents.

If it is only the 3rd or 4th time you've spoken to her why do you have to immediately rush to the board to try and post something negative about her? People who know her better (not just me) have posted that this seems like something odd to hear about someone who is usally a big supporter or the program.

That's my point, why are we always looking for signs that GW staff and serious fans are somehow closet GW haters. We are all part of a small army of GW supporters. Why do we keep bashing each other. Bash Georgetown, bash Temple, bash the refs, but why do we bash each other and the players on the team. I don't see what good your post serves. You certainly aren't helping your future in the sports media world and you are only making Kathy more frustrated at the constant abuse she gets from this board and from fans at games. She isn't the enemy but she joked with me last night that she was epecting to see "Kathy must go" signs at the Smith Center. She is one of our few friends in the sports media world. We should be nice to her, not go nit picking looking for signs of negativity in her writing or comments.

Tim, I have no beef with you, because I know that you are trying your best to spread the word about GW sports through campus and the local area. That's why if you make a mistake on a broadcast I don't post here trying to point out how wrong you are. I just don't see what good a post like that does.

2 points:

1) Tim just posted what she said? I doubt she'd deny it. Unless she told him it was off the record, I don't think he did anything wrong. However, I think what she said is sad.

2) As one of the fans who has sat in those blue seats for the last 1 years, I think these complaints are ridulous. The things that are yelled are mild compared to other schools. Vulgar language is rare. 90% of what myself and other fans around me yell is positive, but we do occasionally ride the refs. The only reason Kathy Orton, Golf Coach or others even notice is because there are so few fans in attendance -- in a larger arena like MD's, I don't think they the voices would stand out like that or be noticed.

As for whether these criticisms will mute me, the answer in a decided no. Last year was my first year sitting down there and I know for certain that I got us about 3 calls. There were times when a specific opponent was doing something (moving screen, pushing off, etc.) and after riding the refs for a couple of plays and then during a dead ball they suddenly called it (and each time I'm thinking of it was the ref who was standing near me when I was yelling about it who made the call).

Don't believe me if you want. Call it my own ego if you want. But I know I've gotten a couple of calls for us and I won't stop, nor should BC or others who want to heckle refs when they think the refs have made a bad call.

First off, Thanks for the respectful back and forth Tim4. As I've said, I don't have any beef with you, you do as much to spread the word about GW hoops as anyone.

Second, FQ, I think you misunderstand my point. You have the right to cheer the team and the refs. I agree that we have to cheer and work the refs and sometimes the opponents to get calls and get into the visitors head. However, just like you have that right. Kathy has the right to want to sit somewhere where folks are yelling insults at the players and coaches on her alma mater. I've talked to Kathy several times about our fans. What she doesn't like is the negativity at our own players and coaches. For eample tonight after W & M got off to the hot shooting start there were several fans behind be yelling at Hobbs and our players. A guy got hot and we didn't pick him up early. We shut him down for the rest of the half but our fans were already down on our guys and our coaches. This is what makes Kathy mad. She is a big GW fan and she hates it when the fans start ripping our own guys and coaches, usually minutes into the game.

No one is saying that fans should be quiet or shouldn't cheer, just that you should be positive and our fans, at least the ones right behind the blue seats are far from positive in regard to our players and coaches. This is what bothers KO and I don't think it makes her a GW hater if she rather sit somewhere that she can't hear it.

What is also being pointed, and repeatedly missed, is that people on this board talk about low attendance, the need to get more people in the building, etc., yet who wants to come, after paying a lot of money, to an environment that either they don't enjoy or want their children to be eposed to. Ehibit A: The football game I attended tonight was totally unenjoyable, and one reason was the man sitting behind me. Every other word out of his mother was a cuss word, along with him repeating "Hit the motherf****er" every twenty seconds, with the alternating "Someone kill the godd@@@@ quarterback". Sitting four seats on his right was a 10-year-old boy whose father paid 45 dollars to hear that crap. What parent in their right mind would want to bring their young kids to hear that? You want the parents to bring their kids to the games, because that is how you replenish your fan base. However, not only is the venue non-family friendly, you have these people in the blue seats cussing up a storm. People can say that they have a right to do so, that they paid for those tickets and so that gives them the right to say whatever they want. However, that means that people aren't going to pay high ticket prices just so certain individuals can epress their freedom of speech. Maybe I'm not really eplaining myself very well after being out in the cold for five hours, but I think that is why Kathy Orton may feel that way if she did epress that viewpoint to Tim4.

At that point in the game, I was confident that we would correct the problem so I thought those 2 fans were being unduly harsh.

Hoewver, the negativity you refer to isn't widespread. I think you have overstated it and Kathy has blown it way out of proportion. Like I said, the negativity is nothing compared to what you'd hear at a bigger program.

The negativity is much better so far this year, but Kathy has not sat in front of the blue seats this year either, what she and I am talking about comes mostly from last year. Thing got pretty negative and critical last year at times. We're winning now so the feeling has been mostly positive from the crowd. Like you said, even you heard a few comments that you thought were unappropriate last night and that was in a win. The past few years have been different. No one is saying that you don't have a right to cheer or even be critical of the players and coaches. It happens in every gym in the country. But this whole thing started when Kathy said she'd rather sit somewhere that she can't hear the negativity. She has that right too. If we just had more fans in the Smitty you wouldn't be able to hear anything but yelling.

Ya know, maybe if she could come up with a real story, aside from the usual "who beat who" pap, she'd get noticed and move on to a beat she considers more desirable. Would she rather be on the crime beat? How about interviewing Red? Talking to the assistants? Spending some money on a call to Jim Calhoun? Driving to App State? If she has been doing anything more than phoning in her stories, its barely noticeable. How about a story on the stinkin shirts? OOh its too late.

Wow, her unprofessional conduct was outed and rightly so, by Tim4, years before she outed herself as hating GW fans.

Really can't imagine a group of blue seaters that are worse than other fans.

Beyond the serious self-hating issues as a GW grad herself, really poignant find, Herve.

Here's some "support" from even earlier:

I caught less than 5 minutes of the Maryland-Illinois game.  In that short span, there were two different times where the fans chanted "vulgar" chants, clearly audible on TV.   You just can't tell me that GW fans are more obnoxious or vulgar than the average college basketball crowd.  My guess is that one of the fans yelled something critical at Kathy Orton one time and she holds a grudge against the whole fan base.

When slights reach epic proportions--love it.

Tell me that this isn't fun for a GW fan, eh? (re: Maryland basketball)

Now that I have read the prior news I take the golf coach position that it is a wedding in hell:  (1) she does not relish the GW assignment for many reasons; (2) the Post kills her stories; (3) the Post sends her back to GW.  In the words of the Stones: "paint it black"

Maybe Kathy Orton is transitioning to other things? Today she's a guest on the Got Plans Going Out Gurus chat to discuss holiday events.

Please say it's for good!

Forget about an article...no preview capsule in today's Post featuring a game against Kansas State?  Nothing on the women's overtime victory over ODU last night (other than the score appearing in the scores section)?  We have hit an all-time low with the Post.  I've complained about it for years but it has never been this bad.  I think Mr. Nero needs to make a phone call to mend this fence.

I am not defending Kathy's statements but the lack of coverage should have absolutely nothing to do with any personal animosity she may have.

Checking my records, I see that I did get an order from Kathy for a shirt, which I filled back in early 2003. Maybe she did not like the bra I had sewed into it. Some gals are so sensitive.

Again, as someone recently ushered out of a newsroom, believe me, there's no "there" there anymore.

Or, it could have been the card I sent her, offering a free fitting.  Who knows?

Actually, I did get some pretty bizarre requests back then. I have shirt records, but with office and home moves and several major medical issues, I'd have to actually look for them. I filled a 40 cubic yard dumpster during my first move, but kept, I think, everything related to GWU, GWHoops, and my files on the Clyde Tolson Will Contest.
