Not sure why there is so little current information about him on the internet (at least in the free sites).  The only 2017 update that I have found was a tiny blurb from verbal commits that said he has offers from New Mexico and Siena, interest from Texas, Memphis and Auburn, and said he was still considering George Washington.

notta hater3/26/2017 1:28:36 PM

good to see we are still on his short list. Pun intended

boom3/26/2017 2:13:48 PM

One would think a 2016 guy like Darnell would have signed a long time ago. I don't believe he had any other offers besides GW last year.  Something is amiss.

bigfan3/26/2017 4:53:52 PM

Will carry his bags to the dorm if he comes.

But hard to see it, since it looks like he and his family, including his GW famous father, were pissed off at what happened.

Just thinking about that. How the hell did we wind up making the decision not to admit, when Darnell was admittable for NCAA standards, so late that both Darnell and us were screwed?

Power struggle?

ruserious3/26/2017 5:08:15 PM

ML wanted Darnell, until he didn't

3

hippo man3/26/2017 7:57:21 PM

Ask Shawnta about that lol. Nothing could be further from the truth Ruserious. So I have to ask Ruserious?

2

hippo man3/26/2017 7:58:24 PM

Ruserious like Baghdad Bob lol

I think there are likely to be an usual number of moving parts to Darnell's college destination compared to most players. Otherwise he would be in college somewhere already.

kaj5/18/2017 12:16:34 PM

And the saga finally comes to an end.

5'3 Darnell Rogers tells me he has committed to Florida Gulf Coast Congrats Darnell !!

thinker5/18/2017 12:26:42 PM

Were Dooley and Shawnta at GW around the same time?

the mv5/18/2017 12:35:12 PM

Dooley was at GW long before Shawnta.  About a 10 year gap or so without looking it up.

But yes, you know what's coming next.  Had the school opted to hire Joe, Darnell may very well be a Colonial (or, we would know with greater certainty that academics was the issue that kept Darnell out as opposed to other peripheral noise taking place behind the scenes.

If you were to try and think of the schools/coaches that represented the biggest slap in the face to GW by signing Darnell, FGCU/Dooley ought to be in your Top 5.

gw695/18/2017 1:12:20 PM

I find this upsetting.

long suffering fan5/18/2017 1:23:07 PM

Call me "Sour Grapes", but there is probably a reason that Darnell landed up in a lower tiered conference.  If Darnell was the "chip off the old block" that many of us was assuming he was, I strongly suspect he would have been playing in a higher conference.  Perhaps it was GW that soured on Darnell rather than the other way around.

notta hater5/18/2017 1:28:27 PM

I am glad to hear. I hope that he and his family are happy and that he has a great time in college and on the hardwood!

bigfan5/18/2017 1:33:10 PM

Irony is thick enough to cut with a knife on this one.

Fla. Gulf Coast fans are in for a treat. One that should have been ours.

the dude5/18/2017 2:47:47 PM

Have you considered for a moment that maybe LSF is right about this? Just think about it.  Zero others offers, sat out a full year, lands one year later at Flordia Gulf Coast.  Why do you think Darnell was some magic fix? Just the name?

gw695/18/2017 3:06:25 PM

Thanks LSF and Dude---feel a little better.

mike k5/18/2017 4:21:58 PM

best of luck Darnell.

squid5/18/2017 4:42:22 PM

:(

best of luck to Darnell. Wish he were here. FGCU is a rising school.

rich maier5/18/2017 5:02:58 PM

good luck Darnell.

bigfan5/18/2017 5:29:44 PM

Said to be around 60-70 percent of Shawanta.

We (at least basketball people) wanted him, as sure Bo will confirm.

Which would have helped us last year. No one knows how a freshman will turn out (Marfo was not what we expected, though had potential). Hard to imagine in Darnell's case, we couldn't use a small, quick point guard, even for quick spells.

Think Dooley knows a bit about D1 talent.

Not a savior, but a help inan area of weakness.

Also in terms of publicity, which we need, since he is shorter than Shawnta and fan interest, which we need.

Regardless of whether he was a starter or a sub, wouldn't any of you have liked to have seen him on the court?

ziik the bureaucrat5/18/2017 5:37:47 PM

Thanks for another smart post, BF

I have to agree, there are plenty of good reasons to want Rogers at GW, and, I have heard of no reason to pass on the guy.

No matter, I look forward to seeing GW add FGCU to the schedule, and play two when GW travelss South, FGCU and a second worthy Florida opponent

Maybe, in honor of the circus going out of business, GW can play bpth FGCU and Central, and knock off college bball's largest and smallest competitors

I will be exceptionally curious to see how Darnell does in college. I always felt that he could only be successful if his team really designed a system that was suited for his unique attributes. That's probably why he had limited scholarship offers - most teams are not going to want to do that. I was never clear on how ML would fit Darnell into his mostly slowed down half court offense.

With all of the guards MoJo signed, it never appeared that GW was in play the second time around.

It would be awesome to see Darnell excel at FGC.

2

the dude5/18/2017 8:59:01 PM

I wanted him, I don't think the evidence suggests he was likely to be a good A10 player or the answer to all of our ills, but it would have been fun to see and I'm glad we went after him. There was clearly some qualifying issues and ESPN scouting did give him a good grade FWIW. FGC sounds like a good fit.

bigfan5/18/2017 11:21:28 PM

Was okay with NCAA clearinghouse.

However, agree he would have been fun to watch.

long suffering fan5/19/2017 12:21:50 AM

Sorry for those who were not following team when Shawnta played.  A truly unique and remarkable player.   A 6'8" sharp shooting power forward crammed into a 5'4" body, with lightening speed.   For at least a few months, we got to dream of the "second coming", but alas, it was not meant to be (or more likely illusory).  Wish him well.  I would watch a college game for no other reason than to see someone his height playing.

bobo5/19/2017 8:41:09 AM

Joe Dooley has it rolling now at FLGC.  He's brining in a bunch of good talent, has 4 strait 20 win seasons with 2 strait NCAA trips.  They are brining most of their team back thiis year with preseason favorite for Atlantic Sun POY and one of the 10-15 best PGs in the nation in senior Branon Goodwin.

Rodgers will be in back of him but should get some minutes for a team that is clearly a better team and a stronger program than GW right now.  GW likes to play FL teams so it would be fun to see GW go up against Dooley and FLGC sometime in the near future.

1

mentzinger5/19/2017 10:45:47 AM

I was about the only one on here wondering why we didn't even interview Joe when hiring ML, in the same way we're all wondering why we didn't interview anyone before hiring MoJo. I guess it's too hard interviewing candidates for your organization's third or fourth highest paid position.

3

the mv5/19/2017 11:54:42 AM

I'm pretty sure there were others Mentz, myself included.  I described ML at the time that he was being considered as an uninspired choice, one that was clearly rubber-stamped by Jack Kvancz.  The fact is that ML won me over due to his obvious passion for wanting to be at GW (talking about how he would take the Metro while a student at from Catholic U. to come watch Chester Wood play games was just amazing), his absolutely tireless work ethic (the guy practically lived in high school gyms; he was the anti-Penders during Tom's GW tenure), and his ability to both gameplan and make in-game adjustments.  I definitely did not see eye-to-eye with him on all coaching decisions but that's OK.  I had a ton of respect for what he was building at GW.

The school failed to do due diligence insofar as surveying the landscape and interviewing other candidates.  We have to live with their laziness, ineptitude, penny-pinching or some combination of these things.  As for MoJo, I am very hopeful that he will also win me over similarly to the way his former boss did.

bobo5/19/2017 12:14:22 PM

Once again GW's loss is Florida Gulf Coast's gain. The future is bright...for FLGC.

When even the suffering one takes the optimistic angle I am inclined to do the same.

If Dooley and Darnell make multiple Dance trips while MoJoBall raises more CBI banners, just how venomous will the environment here be? Would love to see FGCU meet GW in the Final Four (the NCAA one), and hope it happens.

the dude5/19/2017 9:54:35 PM

Only one of those two Coaches was handed an NCAA Sweet 16 team, loaded with returning players.

Might have to wait a few years before any grand declarations, otherwise some dissapointment in comparison is nearly inevitable.

thinker5/19/2017 10:47:06 PM

Mentz,

I kind of remember some kind of meeting with Dooley and GW back then. Was it at an airport or something like that? Does anybody remember that or am I just hallucinating? It wouldn't have been a "real" interview either way

mentzinger5/20/2017 10:20:43 AM

Thinker there is no evidence we've called Dooley, inquired about him, met him in an airport or shadowy parking garage, nothing. Ever. Why? Best active GW alum coach, and not even a call?

1

ziik the tentmaker5/20/2017 10:24:54 AM

Because too many GW jackasses thought Gimelstob was right and Joe was wrong.

Even though, the entire team backed Joe.

ruserious5/20/2017 10:25:23 AM

Do you think every time an inquiry is made, a phone call is placed, a question is asked, it is made public?

2

mentzinger5/20/2017 11:04:20 AM

I think if we inquired and no one heard about it, it's because he rejected us. Either that, or we didn't inquire. Which is it?

He went to FGCU one year after we hired ML, so he was clearly looking. Was he spurning GW overtures to hold out for FGCU? That would say a lot.

1

gw725/20/2017 12:17:49 PM

If you are bitching about ML being gone can't also be bitching we hired ML instead of Dooley.

2

bigfan5/20/2017 12:24:46 PM

Would it be allowed to express any question at all as to why we didn't contact an experienced coach, a celebrated recruiter and alumnus AFTER ML left?

1

mentzinger5/20/2017 12:44:30 PM

I can, GW72, if I believe both events are the manifestation of a dysfunctional administration, as I do.

You're allowed to have opposed hiring ML because of the lack of due diligence, and then an ML fan who doesn't have total confidence in the manner in which he was fired and replaced. Not mutually exclusive. In fact, sort of the same symptom.

2

gwstaff5/20/2017 1:17:47 PM

Shawnta, please tell these people what Pat did to your son Darnell.  He would have been perfect for GW this year. The fans deserve to know the truth and not the lies posted on here by Pat's media machine that trashes your son.

3

bigfan5/20/2017 5:06:19 PM

Actually believe he or his wife already did that.

ruserious5/20/2017 5:37:01 PM

It sickeningly obvious who GWStaff is.

bigfan5/20/2017 6:52:15 PM

By being screwed by us, looks like Darnell dodged a bullet.

Or an implosion.
