That is as big a win as we've had in years. I put that OVER the UVA win this season because it is impossible to beat "our refs" down there. DELIGHTFULLY SHOCKED! Too early to start drinking! SO FUCKING HAPPY!!!!!!!

Lot's of home-made clothing going to be burned in Richmond.

Spent final three minutes repeating to my dis-interested family: "I don't care if they win, I'm satisified with their play." I lied. OH MAN DID I WANT THEM TO WIN!!!!

Garino and Joe, so clutch.

Being a road win makes it so much the better. GW needed to prove that it could beat a marquee team in a pure road game.

Agree with Herve this is bigger tha UVA because of time and place!

Agree. Bigger than Uva. What a job by ML

By: BWK (14 posts) - 2/6/2016 2:16:30 PM

The set plays in the last 2 mins were a thing of beauty, even with the McDonald miss. We wanted it more.  That and Lonergan coaching his face off made the difference.  Great game Pato. You are legend.

By: Gw212 (2/6/2016 2:21:02 PM)

sorry bc. Not sure how that happened. Havoc going on today. Nice back to back wins. Pato, Joe , TC, ML....  The whole team won this one.

By: herve (9,159 posts) - 2/6/2016 2:21:09 PM

Another thing that makes it sweet is VCU played well, including hitting FTs they NEVER hit while we were missing FTs at an unusual clip. I'm certain VCU was positive they didn't play all that well and we got lucky because that is their fan-base in general, but facts were those were two good NCAA tournament teams playing it out in an entertaining game. There was a lot of skill on that court.

By: maypoman (671 posts) - 2/6/2016 2:23:58 PM

I listened on the radio and I still don't know exactly how we won, particularlywith our free throw shooting. . I do know that Garino was sensational and that Larsen, Cavanaugh and Joe made4 big plays down the stretch. Great effort!!!

By: maypoman (671 posts) - 2/6/2016 2:26:06 PM

I forgot Mitola. His ball handling was a steadying influence throughout the second half.and was a big reason our turnover numbers were much better!

By: NJ Colonial (1,980 posts) - 2/6/2016 2:28:35 PM

It is soooo good to be a Colonial!

By: herve (9,159 posts) - 2/6/2016 2:28:45 PM

Gotta love the Richmond logic:

"GW didn't cause the win, we caused our loss."

By: Gw212 (2/6/2016 2:32:21 PM)

It seemed like we were not just holding the ball for one shot today on offense. Much more fluid. Some big 3 balls and went to basket when it counted. I liked the minutes given out today and always want Joe ,Pato and TC on floor when it counts

By: RKelley (152 posts) - 2/6/2016 2:40:59 PM

8-18 from 3PT land, a very good day. You hit homeruns, you win ballgames.

Great play today from the seniors. Garino was absolutely unstoppable, Joe was absolutely clutch. Those two played intense, smart basketball.

Cavanaugh was excellent. Larsen trucked it through some tough matchups.

Also Mitola, Swan, Hart all added a little something.

On paper, the surface numbers don't paint the whole picture, but Yuta played a very solid game today.

At the end of the day, GW just beat VCU--undefeated in conference with one of the country's longest win streaks--in their packed house. From KenPom 82 to right back in the hunt.

W vs UVA at the beginning, W vs. Seton Hall toward the middle, W @VCU down the stretch. 18-5 record, with 2 losses within 7 to top-25 opponents.

great win, ball movement and I agree Mitola was a very stealing influence. His ball handling ability made a big difference. Unbelievable we won there and couldn't hit free throws at our 76% rate during the game.

By: BACCAS92 (705 posts) - 2/6/2016 2:54:56 PM

1. We should be well on our way to the Virginia state championship. 2. Can we be "that" team? You know the one that has a good player step up in the NCAA Tourney and carry them deep in the Tourney. Garino would be that guy. 3. No screw ups from here on out. Finish winning 6 of 8 and at least 1-1 in A 10 tourney (assuming bye). 4. We should have won easier but free throw shooting was horrible. Seniors really stepped up but Joe missed like 5/6 free throws. VCU ended up shooting poorly and made some inopportune turnovers. Usually like we lose. Man wish we had Saint Louis and Richmond games back. We should have had Dayton as well.

By: Mentzinger (3,646 posts) - 2/6/2016 2:59:23 PM

Limited turnovers with our continued good press break, controlled glass (for the most part), great help D off screens at the arc, and just grit to overcome missed lyups and a bad night at the line. MVP Garino. Lonergan for A10 coach of the year.

By: thinker (2,825 posts) - 2/6/2016 3:05:09 PM

Can't really enjoy this victory because this team is so shitty and disappointing.

By: The Dude (529 posts) - 2/6/2016 3:08:26 PM

MVP goes to Pato, ML co MVP.

Pato can make a bid for 1ST Team all A10 with play like this.  VAMOS Pato!

How about that 3 possession sequence of the 1-3-1? Pato's "A"game couldn't be touched by the bad guys!

Saw last 1/2 of the game in wilkes-barre. What I saw was amazing. Maybe what ML said in the Hatchet had an effect. Wow! Now about that free throw shooting

By: RKelley (152 posts) - 2/6/2016 3:25:29 PM

For most of his career, Joe McDonald has been the guy that overcomes the mental wall that the team hits against big opponents, when momentum is dead in away games, and in other up-against-it situations.

He's a high-leverage performer. It sets the real captain apart. His three pointer tonight was the winner. It's what changed a well fought loss into a season-changing win.

The offense looked great. The ball moved more crisply, and they were getting good looks from 3PT range. Setting up the three pointer and respecting it's value is important for this team. They won that battle tonight. On defense, their man looked good against a very athletic team and the 1-3-1 was excellent in the second half.

Mitola's smarts and court vision, ballhandling, speed, and shot make him a huge asset for this team. Very good game tonight in 21 minutes. Matt Hart played just 4 minutes and hit a 3 pointer. I'd still like to see more time for him. He always does good things. Yuta looks really good at forward. His abilities make him tough to beat there.

Patricio looks like an NBA player. Now that he has a three-point shot, he's moved from a good Euro/Argentina player to a possible NBA guy. 6'6'", speed, length, hands, leaper, shot.

By: vcufan (2/6/2016 3:39:11 PM)

Congrats on the win everyone. I think having Cavanaugh was the difference in your 1-3-1 zone, and it caused us to miss a lot of shots and bunnies. This loss really helps your team more than it hurts us. On to the next one!

By: Tennessee Colonial (1,179 posts) - 2/6/2016 3:48:06 PM

How we won? We were agressive and even when down by 9 we kept coming back. You could see VCU begin to wilt. Horay for us!!!!!

Answer? NO!

By: bobo (3,178 posts) - 2/6/2016 7:53:00 PM

How did VCU become the #1 team in the A10?  Forcing TOs that lead to offense. They are by far the best team in the leage (and one of the best in the nation) in forcing TOs.  Those TOs have lead to an exceptionally high FG% for VCU as they've shot 55% on 2pt FGs in league play.  They've also shot 3pt FGs well, often coming in transition.

GW beat VCU in Points Off Of Turnovers 15-4 Saturday.  That's the key to the game right there.  GW had 12 assists and only 10 TOs vs HAVOC. They also outscore VCU in points in the paint 32-26.

Larsen and Yuta had solid defensive games, as did TC.  McDonald was terrible at the line and missed the bunny at the end but his late 3 was huge.  Garino was the best player on the court. Love Lonergan praising him after the game for working all summer on his 3pt game and that paying off for Garino this year.

What does the Committee look for when giving out bids? First and foremost is Quality Road Wins.  Saturday was a Quality Road Win for GW.  Congrats!

By: Alumnus (2,050 posts) - 2/6/2016 8:00:38 PM

Great stuff!  I was at something all afternoon and could only take peeks at the ESPN website scoreboard.  I saw we were close at the half and then suddenly VCU had a 9-point lead in the first two minutes of the second half, and thought, s--t, this is just what happens over and over.  The next time I checked we were back within 2 or 3 and then we had won.  It's just great for these coaches and players, they deserve the good times.  Really looking forward to the St. Joe's game now.

By: herve (9,159 posts) - 2/6/2016 8:01:28 PM

GW 10 turnovers whole game
starters average 33 mins
All GW starters finish with 3+ fouls (don't ask a VCU about that though because their guts tell them different)
Goss somehow did not register a minute, but did register a turnover. Nice. Baseball season right around the corner.
Swan: 3pts, 3 minutes
Yuta: 2 pts, 6 boards, 1 block
PGs (Mitola/JoeMac): 2 turnovers
JoeMac: 11pts, 5 rebs, 2 steals, 1 block
Melvin Johnson: 4-13 FGs
VCU: 76% FTs (67% for season)
GW: 52% FTs (76% for season)

If I am Mitola I am drinking a tall, frosty one tonight because he proved to himself why he transferred. Check that one off his already impressive list. Next!

By: RKelley (152 posts) - 2/6/2016 9:23:45 PM

I just watched some of the UVA game tape and Jorgensen was sick. I really hope that player comes back before the end of the season. He's a stud talent, he just needs to glue it all together.

PJ makes things happen. His assist rate is the best on the team and is 9th in the A10.

Every player can't be firing on all cylinders all the time. Mitola has been excellent lately. But it would be huge if PJ and Yuta could get it going again.

I come home from big game.  Win playing with Colonials style.  GW advantage with courage for VCU Rams fans not good like Smith Center. Joe McDonald play like lion.  Garino advantage with to much skill for Rams.  I feel happy for GWU for Alex Mitola also has contributor game.  Also advantage for coaching to GW.  VCU make a home advantage but not good enough to defeat GW for VCU fans not nice.  I go to many game and GW versus VCU today best for sure.

What an excellent game of college basketball. Lonergan is a fantastic coach and knows how to scheme well. Basketball is all about matchups and theme with teams that have had our number this year is that they all feature multiple mobile big men. Your defensive scheme killed us and we had a few too many guys trying to drive against the trees. Normally our pick and roll looks better but GW blew it up with hedging. I'll be at the game in D.C. and am hoping for a similarly exciting contest. Until then I hope GW continues to make its way into the March conversation as I think your squad matches up well with BCS teams.

By: Free Quebec (6,340 posts) - 2/7/2016 12:04:20 AM

Didn't have a chance to post until now.  Had to record the game and finished around 3:30, but busy and couldn't get to the board until now.  This place can be brutal after a loss, but sure is fun to read this after a win like this.

Road wins, baby.

Lots have been written about Garino's tough play, about Joe and Tyler and Kevin and Mitola making plays in the cluth, but Bobo is the only one who mentioned Yuta's D.  Absolutely key to the game.  He was incredible today.  Causing so many problems with his length and movement for VCU's gaurds.  And I love the fact that he hasn't let his extended shooting struggles this year affect the rest of his game, the way many Colonials have over the years.   6 more boards today to go with the stellar defensive effort.  Second game in a row I thought he played at an all-league defensive team level.

We had a couple of times where we went under screens and let Lewis or Johnson hit open threes, but mostly contested everything. When Brooks hit an NBA three and that crazy contested shot over Joe, I was ruing the fact that teams hit shots like that against us even when our D is good, but ultimately VCU missed late shots when we needed them to.

Also loved that ML didn't come out in the 1-3-1 to start the 2nd half (that I recall) but sprinkled it in.  Even more, I loved that when it did work a couple of possessions, he didn't stay in it for too long to let VCU get comfortable. I think random possessions to keep opponent off balance is much better than staying with it until teams figure it out.  Great job by ML.

Also loved that we attacked all game.  My favorite play was the Cavanaught rebound and outlet to Garino, who just beat everyone down the floor.   Well, that and the Joe three and the KevLar/Joe combo rejection at the end.   And the Jorgenson block (that forced a travel) after Lewis beat him and Paul barely got a hand on it).  And the MItola scoop shot (second game in a row with a move like that). And the Swan three and block. And the Hart 3 late in the half.

Loved it all.   Great, gutty game.

Have to say, though, that rematch at home is going to be tough in a few weeks.  VCU will want that revenge badly and home court can't save us. Need to pay as tough as we did against them.

And against St. Joe's. Big game coming up.  Need to be the aggressors in that one too, and never get back to playing not to lose or playing to run our stuff, rather than to win.

PS.  Interesting that their coach wanted a three because he thought they'd lose in OT.  Says something about how he thought we were playing, but also wonder if that kind of a comment shakes his team's confidence.

By: NYCOLONIAL (15 posts) - 2/7/2016 12:35:14 AM

Great game!  Great win!  Kudos to Pato and the entire team!  And thanks to vcufan and VCUStudent for their most gracious comments.  I wish all of us were capable of displaying that kind of character more consistently.

Incidentally, did anybody else notice repeated moving screens by Michael Gilmore (#11) which were never called?  Any other thoughts about the refereeing?  Like many of us, I suspect, I find it hard to be objective about their decisions and non-decisions when I am so invested in the outcome, but I thought overall they were otherwise OK.

By: Bigfan (2,829 posts) - 2/7/2016 5:26:26 AM

Yes,kept referring to the moving screens in Chat.

Seemed glaringly obvious.

Want refs to notice in rematch.

But let go of it post-game because it was such a great outcome.

I had to listen to the game in the car while I was driving - I legitimately thought I may get in an accident!!! Amazing win. So f***ing happy.

Two things: I just spent the better part of an hour reading through the VCU message board. I don't know if I've ever seen fans complain about the refs so much. Since I wasn't watching, what are they complaining about?? Second, does anyone know a link to watch replays. I saw it was on CBSSN but can't find any replays.

By: MD-DC (147 posts) - 2/7/2016 9:56:37 AM

Nevermind, found the highlight!

By: Bo Knows (705 posts) - 2/7/2016 10:13:56 AM

Yesterday was a great win to be sure. No need to rehash the analysis already posted since it about covers it. However, this game once again goes to show that it is a long season and what is today may not be tomorrow. Seeing the big picture requires the long view. That's why nitpicking every loss like it automatically means something for the future is flat out nonsensical. We have a good coach and good players. Trust the process a little more it will do wonders for your blood pressure.

By: Free Quebec (6,340 posts) - 2/7/2016 10:14:45 AM

What they are complaining about is that they are one of those teams that think you can foul every possession because the refs can't call it all (like URI, but not as goony).  They slap and grab and hold (and set moving screens) and throw shoulders into screens (Cox) on basically every possession.  They often play d with one hand on the guy with the ball.

The refs don't, in fact, call most of it, therefore whenever they do call it the dumb "our refs" portion of their fans genuinely don't understand what is and what is not a foul.   Also they didn't notice that Cavanauh got taken out of the first half by an absurd makeup foul (well, sort of a makeup in that the fans booed a good call, so they immediately called Tyler for nothing to make it up, which was his second foul and put him on the bench most of the first half)

Like the URI game, they called nothing the first ten minutes or so such that when they started calling some of the fouls the fans just assumed they weren't fouls.

By: herve (9,159 posts) - 2/7/2016 11:11:51 AM

It's funny because with the sound off the whole game, I thought the officials missed an enormous amount of physical play, including knocking our players literally to the ground on drives with no calls. There was one sequence up top, where JoeMac was simply dribbling and a VCU player literally ran straight at him, shoved him and nearly knocked him over. It was bizarre because JoeMac staggered, regained his dribble, everyone waited for the obvious call as play came to a stop, yet nothing was called. There are countless instances just like that. But it's a game, there's momentum and crowd momentum, and the refs naturally get sucked in, especially when VCU starts playing everything at full speed. The board fans over there largely seem to just be in shock that they lost at home and need to explain it to themselves. Every third comment is rationale, but in between it's some tough reading.

By: BM (5,673 posts) - 2/7/2016 11:18:43 AM

Funny no one mentioned Tillman shoving Cavs to the ground on that last shot (which is why they got the "rebound" on the airball).

By: Rich Maier (17 posts) - 2/7/2016 11:38:23 AM

We Won! Please stop with the bad ref business. Totally unnessary after a hugewin. Let VCU complain about the refs.Let's celebrate GW's big victory. (Vegas said odds are this will not be a well received post.)

What an incredible home court atmosphere at VCU.   Wish we could create a home environment like that more often.   We won because we did what we have had a hard time doing, namely we kept our particular Pato, notwithstanding the incredible advantage VCU gains because of their great fans when playing at home.   Hope the atmosphere at the Smith Center approachs that on Wednesday, when we play what I feel may be our most important game of the year (even if the VCU may have lessened the importance just a tad).   Presently, 5 teams have legitimate shots at the NCAA from the A-10,  GW, Dayton, VCU, St. Joes and the Bonnies.   I think the conference is looking at 3 bids, maybe a 4th.   Needless to say, a win vs. St. Joes would be huge in nudging us ahead of them for that bid.

By: Bo Knows (705 posts) - 2/7/2016 3:47:22 PM

What would the GW hoops world ever do without the "objective" Dude calling a pile of shit a pile of shit except when he later comes back and tells us it was really filet mignon?

Well, time to beg again. I was flying a jet to Philly, and then a piston engine puddle jumper to scranton, pa. Time 12 noon or whatever, Central to Eastern time. I got to my destination and tried to pick up the game. I saw a little of the game first half and the second half. I had 4 nieceses and nephews (Ages2-9)  wanting my attention during the game. And you know what the game was like. Insane.  But uncle, "see this, and uncle look at that" and maybe I get to see a little of the game. Normally, at home, I evict my wife from the room and huncker down. Now, how can I get a replay of the game so that I can relish the unexpected victory? I just found replays. LSF, someone, come to my rescue. Herve!?

BM, I just rewatched the end of the game and you are totally right.  Tillman did completely shove Cavs to the ground.   Plus, even before that, Mo Allie Cox set a completely illegal screen to try to free Johnson (including throwing his shoulder into Garino).   Refs really swallowed their whistles to give VCU a chance.

Funny no one mentioned Tillman shoving Cavs to the ground on that last shot (which is why they got the "rebound" on the airball). Oh really?!

That's Tillman laying on the floor after getting tripped by Cavanaugh on the final play. Korey Billbury is also getting smacked on the head by Watanabe.

While VCU does still force many turnovers, they don't rely on them in order to score nearly as much as under Shaka. They are very efficient as a team offensively and score well in the half court, not as much on fast breaks or in transition. Half court offense won us the game against St. Joe's down the stretch. Lack of forced turnovers was not the reason we lost to GW.

VCU fans are complaining about the officiating because the officials missed some obvious traveling calls on GW, and blatantly missed the shot clock violation, which was the last straw:

However, even with the poor officiating, VCU had plenty of chances to win, but couldn't convert some easy buckets. Credit GW's length for that.

Uh oh. Not the last straw!!

The game was two days ago and you are wrong.   You are a loser vcufan.

By: vcufan (2/8/2016 2:18:18 PM)

Great, educated comeback Quebec! I can tell you put your heart and full thought process into that. We'll see who the "loser" is after the blowout on 2/27/16.

By: Free Quebec (6,340 posts) - 2/8/2016 4:52:32 PM

Didn't mean VCU is a loser (the program is clearly a winner, other than Saturday at home vs. GW).  I meant you, personally, for going on another team's messageboard two days after a loss to complain about the refs in a game where you got ridiculously favorable treatment, are pretty much the textbook definition of the word.

I mean, I'm a dork who spends way too much time in Herve's playground, but even I'm not as pathetic as what you are doing.

By: vcufan (2/8/2016 6:26:40 PM)

Hey asshole, I was clearly responding and quoting posts from YESTERDAY, LAST NIGHT, INCLUDING YOURS. Don't turn into a punk and get personal just because I haven't read this place in a couple days and came back at you with facts and photo evidence. No VCU fan even mentioned the refs on here in the first place. You can thank your fellow fans for that.

By: vcufan (2/8/2016 6:28:58 PM)

And my point was you, Mr. Quebec, will be the loser on here bitching on 2/27, since you couldn't read between the lines.

Don't you have a future opponent or can you not find their message board?

^ Yes.

I just watched JoeMac's missed putback....unbelievable! He could make that thing in his sleep normally!

Here you go big guy/gal! You get out there and wreak some "havoc"!

I just rewatched the game and Tillman clearly knocked Cavanaugh down and then tripped over Cavanaugh's legs opening the door for a Billbury rebound and layup, which fortunately he somehow choked. Only a rabid vcufan would have the audacity to complain about the refs failing to call a foul on Cavanaugh for creating a trip hazard.

By: vcufan (2/8/2016 11:17:35 PM)

So what about Billbury getting rapped on the head by Watanabe? Could that have something to do with "somehow choking"? What about the missed shot clock violation?

vcufan, with all due respect, it's really a bad look to be sticking around whining about a loss in an opponent's forum 2 days after the game. Move on, for your own sake

Perhaps we need to use simpler words this guy can  understand: go away.

I wonder if vcufan is the Ramnation's version of The Dude?

By: Bo Knows (705 posts) - 2/9/2016 10:33:02 AM

2cents - BINGO! Maybe we can propose a steel cage match between the Dude and vcufan. That would be entertaining.
