Ok, so this is what I came up with, scenario-wise.  Is it accurate?

Charlotte AND Bona lose - #10 seed, play at 6:30 Thurs

Charlotte OR Bona lose - #11 seed, play at 9:00 Thurs

Charlotte AND Bona win - #12 seed, play at 2:30 Thurs

How did Bynes come back?  Wasn't he on crutches last week?  It feels like GW missed a hundred free throws.  Armwood had the play of the year with his put-back slam. The game was frustrating on so many levels.  Key possessions were squandered, key guys were sitting on the bench in the 2nd half for who knows what reason.  I'm just glad they got out of there with a win.  It is funny how much of a difference one point can make, and that last three by Dayton was a half second late.

With that small difference, the posts here would have turned into an angry mob (and I would have joined in).  That is college basketball I guess.  No, make that - that is GW basketball.  It's enough to drive you crazy.  Congrats to the team for playing tough and hanging in there.  You could see how happy they were at the thought of Brooklyn walking off the court.  The Internet stream had a lot of good cloe up shots of their faces.  They deserve to celebrate tonight.  Don't we still need Charlottoe to win?

If I understand it correctly, if Richmond, Dayton and GW are the only teams that finish 7-9, each would be 1-1 in games among the three.

It then goes to who did best against each team in the conference beginning with the top ranked team in the standings.

Richmond owns a win over one of the top teams, I forget whom.  They get in for sure.

At that point Dayton and GW remain as the only two teams.

What I don't know is whether it then goes to head-to-head or if they go down the standings until their is a different between the two teams against common opponents.  If it is the latter, Dayton owns a win over Xavier and would get it...but I don't think that's how they do it.

So...I think we're in, but I wouldn't bet my house on it.

MV..I noticed our assists overall were low today..lots of one on one--especially by our guards.  I'm assuming it was part of the game plan....I guess we ddidn't have any clear cut match up advantages?

Free throws! Cripes. Making layups would be nice too. But the put back slam is history big time. Large numbers of Dayton fans and some gveaways meant the place had life.

Fly, utter sarcasm on my part.  Joe played his heart out and came up with a number of huge baskets.  Great team victory today.  The low assist total was largely due to a number of matchups where GW tried to break down defenders one-on-one, mostly Lasan but others as well.

Hard to get an assist when most points were scored either on a) drives, b) put-backs, and c) free-throws (they made a lot, they must missed A LOT).

So what was the best "call" of the game:

1. Any of Garino's final three fouls in which every block/charge went against him?
2. Lillard's final foul in which he sneezed within five feet of JoeMac?
3. Larsen's fourth foul in which his rib bumped the Dayton player's outstretched arm?
4. The blocking call when Smith scored with 35 seconds left in OT?
5. The foul right before JoeMac went 0-for-2 from the line when a Dayton player got within three feet from him about 40 feet from the hoop and with the shot clock running low?

And that's just off the top of my head from the final 10 minutes.  Both teams have incredibly legitimate beefs with how badly the game was officiated.  They called EVERYTHING including many things that weren't there.

Yes.  We are in!

No matter what, we win the tie-break.  One bad thing is that Bonnies loss could actually mean the 10 seed and a possible game with Xavier, the one team I really didn't want to play.

No matter, I think that win took a lot of pressure off and the team will play loose, and be really dangerous.  I don't think they will be tight, I think they will just be fired up to play.

So is Bynes' legacy that he is the poor man's Willis Reed?

BTW...I am proud of you, GW.  This was a game that you had to win...and you won it.  Armwood...I will love you till the day I die.  That put back dunk is the kind of shot that only happens against GW, not for us...until now.

Really felt it going the other way at 79-75. So did the many Dayton fans.

What a gutty performance, especially by Bynes. Did he really have a broken leg, they said on the radio. Assuming it would be  a stress fracture if that report is correct.

Late in the game, Bynes was fouled on a three and went down. After that, several times he was pulling on the toe of his shoe, like maybe he couldn't feel his foot.  I thought he was out there as part of Senior Day and would leave the game for good at the first deadball.  What a heroic performance.  And, he simply played the point better and with more assurance than I've ever seen him play it.  JoeMac had an excellent game as well and he stepped up big time near the end of the second half to make key plays.  Smith was great.  Larsen got big rebounds when we needed them.  Our offensive rebounding was stupefyingly strong.  At one point we had 17 offensive rebounds and they had 1.  Kromah had his usual weird game but made a lot of headsup plays and tough baskets.  And Armwood, who did a whole bunch of stuff for us, that putback gets him a diploma from the Carl Elliott School of Huge Plays in Huge Situations.  I almost didn't believe what I saw until they showed the replay from around 3 different angles.

Now free throw shooting, ay yi yi ... 20-42??????? If we'd just made 3 or 4 more, no great shakes, no need for the heroics.  Well, worry about that next season, I guess.

The referees were ridiculous, but at least they called both teams many times for breathing on each other.  Certainly helped us to get Dayton's big men and best shooter out of the game.

On to Brooklyn!

As a former official, I'm not one to rag on the refs, but the officiating today was terrible. Game was painful to watch, little to no flow because of simply too many fouls.

Poster: The MV

Doug, you're not even going to mention:

the Armwood first half foul where he was playing perfect defense, fronting the post man with one hand while gently touching his back with the other hand

the Garino clean steal near midcourt that led to the Coach Lonergan tech

the Dwayne Smith tech for hanging on the rim so as to not go feet first into the head of a Dayton player

3/9/2013 8:23:23 PM
Poster: Long Suffering Fan

I agree with you on the first 2, MV.  On the Dwayne dunk, he was celebrating, not practicing safety.

3/9/2013 8:25:02 PM
Poster: GWAlum2001

Two random coaching staff notes...Lonergan standing at half court on the sideline all by himself while the refs were checking the final replay, I think he would have literally either collapsed or gone after the refs if the call went the other way.  And Turner went completely berserk (with joy) as he walked off the court.  Not a great season obviously in their eyes, but I am sure would have been viewed as a complete failure had we lost today.

3/9/2013 9:28:31 PM

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. This was a great finish, but it hardly has the significance of Shawnta's shot or Sarah Jo's putback or Lemire's flaying elbows. I am not even sure it tops the "Carl Elliot has left the building" ending at Dayton. Still, hopefully this is the game that shows the program is pointed in the right direction. Heck, look at LMU's run in the WCC tournament... why can't that be GW, too?

(BTW, The Mount rolled past those other "Colonials" today and now has 18 wins and is one away from dancing; makes that loss look less dreadful).

3/9/2013 11:55:15 PM

MV, as I mentioned that was only off the top of my head in the final 10 minutes.  There was an unbelievable number of terrible calls both ways.  Both teams got absolutely shafted numerous times.

GW wins immediate tiebreakers over DAY and STB because of head-to-head wins, moving to 11th place for rematch with UMASS

3/10/2013 9:28:10 AM
Poster: fbp

Once we beat UMass in game 4 thursday nite we will match up against the #3 seed on friday nite in the same 9pm time slot.  this will be a matchup against either Butler, LaSalle or Temple if they beat VCU today.  Each would have 5 losses.  and apparently the dynamics of the tie breakers change depending on whether its 2 teams or 3.

  • LaSalle 11-5: beat VCU, beat Butler but lost to Temple and lost to St.Louis
  • Butler 11-5: lost to St.Louis twice, lost to VCU, lost to LaSalle, beat Temple
  • Temple11-5:  (would have) beat VCU, beat St.Louis, beat LaSalle, lost to Butler

Based on this and if i have FQ's explanationation right, in the event of three 11-5 teams Temple would be given the #3 seed followed by LaSalle as the 4 seed.  Butler would be the #5 seed and lose the bye.  Go Temple!!

If Temple loses today, they become the 5 seed and by virtue of their win over Butler, LaSalle would be the #3 seed and our quarterfinal opponent.

Our semifinal opponent once we beat either Temple or LaSalle, would be VCU if they win their game against the #7 vs #10 seed [Xavier vs CH/StJ/Rich ? (not sure how these 3 would be seeded)]

note:  VCU will be the #2 seed whether they win or lose today and St.Louis has clinched the #1 seed.

All in all not a bad sequence of matchups.  (one can dream....)  GO TEMPLE!!!
