Hobss' Next Job

A friend of mine who regularly monitors the UConn message board tells me they all love Hobbs and assume he will be their net coach. There's something to be said for not hiring someone who's part of another school's "family." But then again, we're part of that family, too. GW is so inbred with both UConn and Boston University. Check out this ridiculous family tree. I know we all know it, but it's worth repeating... Karl Hobbs played high school ball at Cambridge Latin with Patrick Ewing for Coach Mike Jarvis. Hobbs then went to play at UConn for Coach Dom Permo. At that time, GW hired Boston University coach John Kuester, who led the Colonials to the 1-27 year. During that era, Hobbs was an assistant at Boston University for Kuester's replacement, Mike Jarvis. Mike Jarvis then became the second straight coach to leave Boston University for GW when Kuester was fired. At UConn, Perno had been replaced with Jim Calhoun and Hobbs had taken up residency there as an assistant. Meanwhile, Perno came to GW as an assistant A.D. When Jarvis left, GW hired former UConn guard Tom Penders. Then, when Penders left, we hired Hobbs away from UConn. Now, when Calhoun retires from UConn, they'll probably be looking to hire Hobbs away from GW. I think we should resign ourselves to that fact. Unless GW absolutely throws money and facilities at Hobbs at the appropriate time, I would think we're only leasing him.

I have a hard time believing that UConn would hire Hobbs for such a large national program.  By the time Calhoun retires, Hobbs will be a few years from his last coaching gig and the final years of that gig weren't great.  I'd imagine they'd go after a national name.

Former GW coaches have gone on to bigger and better things. My estimation of Hobbs is that he is just as good as his assistants. He may do well at UCONN.

As someone who goes to GW from CT and roots for UConn, that is not true. If there is a coach in waiting, it's Kevin Ollie not Karl Hobbes

The Kevin Ollie thing is message board speculation not fact. My guess is if they had to choose between Hobbs and Ollie right now Hobbs would get the nod as he has proven he can win at the D1 level and Ollie has no experience.

This would be a good thread to discuss whether how our incoming recruting class of Carl Elliot, Ricky Lucas, and JR Pinnock will do?   I'm looking foward to them.  I heard Elliot is a real Jason Kidd-style point guard.

None of this will happen. When Calhoun finally does pass away, the university will just grant him an extended leave of absense.

This might be my new favorite thread. And I'd have to say I'm most excited about Ricky Lucas.

I think it comes down to whether Pops, Hall, Omar and the other new recruits pan out.  If they do I could see Hobbs getting an offer down road in 2009 or so.

I'm just not buying the hype about Lucas.  We heard all about how Omar was going to Magic Johnson--and while he's good, he's certainly no Magic.

In 10 years I'm sure we'll all be discussing the bust of Lucas--I'll be here to say I told ya so.

FQ-- the knock on Elliot is he can't win games. However, I'd still like to see him take a long-range runner at the buzzer in Dayton, could be interesting...
