First two years as coach

I know. I know. It isn't fair. But let's look at first two years of recent GW coaches:

Mike Jarvis

19-12

16-12

Tom Penders

20-9

15-15

Karl Hobbs

12-16

12-17

Mike Lonergan

10-21

7-9

Does anyone have faith that this year's freshman can lead us next year to 18-12 -- like Hobbs did in his third year?  Lonergan better have a great recruiting year for next season. Maybe we could even have a point guard with twice as many asists as turnovers instead of one with almost as many turnovers as assists. I can't remember a weaker point guard since John Kuester roamed our sidelines. I know McDonald is only a freshman, but he is the weakest starting freshman point guard in decades.

Come on, he didn't get the loaded teams that Jarvis, Penders and Hobbs inherited.    It's not the coachs fault the players locked up with 8 minutes left!

ML needs at least two more full recruiting classes.  Nigel Johnson could be a huge find.  ML needs the chance to land some players before we can look at his records.  His job status will depend on his next two recruiting classes.  The next 6 or 7 guys he signs are the key to our team's future, and his future too.

Comparing apples to oranges as Jarvis and (especially) TP inherrited talented teams while KH inherrited a complete train wreck.

Stubborn?

Name a coach who isn't.

They're basically cat wranglers.

OK, we were 4 or 5 good possessions from going 3-0 against X, TU, and the Bonnies. This makes me laugh. AND starting 4 of the 5 freshmen.

Some of you guys have fruit salad for brains.

wicked, it's great to live in fantasyland but then reality sets in and we're 1-2.  ML is going to have to own this team at some point. i agree we are close but don't make it out to be more than it is. there are many many teams that lose close games that's really nothing special and GW always has it's share.

newtman, I love you so much when you use words like fantasyland with me.... seems I have been calling them preeeetty close, man.  Keep up the good work, newtman. I very much appreciate it when people tell me that I was wrong when i told you where we would do well and were we would not and which matchups were good or bad. As I have repeated in almost MV-like style, we suck at endgames mostly besause we have (for a number of reasons, some caused by the staff) no senior leadership and freshmen.

I think, btw, that the most cogent comment today (or last night) was that the staff has choked-down McDonald to the point where he is not creative. In the long run, he will come back, but we have a guy who will not take chances and a guy like Bynes who may have hit one shot in the last minute during his entire stay at Foggy Bottom. Those two guys are handling the ball. If you don't respect the shot then you can take away the pass all day long. The problem that GW had was they were missing Garino in the last set. He gives you that connecting entry pass. He will work to offload the guard and also pull defensive players away from the paint.

So, we were 4 or 5 plays from being 3-0.  That would be where most GW fans had us 0-3... we are 1-2. The one was a 20-point win--totally unexpected even at game time by most. It was a crush.

i agree wicked. plus if we scored more points than our opponents in each game we'd be undefeated. LOVE YOU TOO. you're clearly THE BRAIN!

Wouldnt record against relative Strength of Schedule be a better comparison.  The current A10 is not the same A10 that Hobbs had to deal with.

"They're basically cat wranglers."

Made me laugh, and then I googled it, and made me laugh again, particularly because of the large grain of truth there, good stuff.

As to deciding ML's fate based on a 1 and one half season of coaching cats he inherited plus a bunch of freshmen, we have no reasonable choice but to give it time.  I think they actually look pretty close to making this work, but that Temple loss really was painful.  I blame the refs...   :)

I'm not a big believer in moral victories.  Teams that go into Offense-Brain Freeze for long stretches of games seem to do it over and over.  When you become The Team That Loses the Close Ones", sometimes you find a way out of it as players mature or you get some new blood, and sometimes, it becomes your defining characteristic.  I sure hope the coach and players aren't using the officiating, as bad as it was, as an excuse, because we had that game in our grasp and another basket and a couple of free throws and it was ours.

re: cat wranglers.

I was not referring to the urban dictionary definition. The youtube minimovie about the guys herding cats on the open range is what I was thinking.

I got it from a cartoon I saw, maybe in the New Yorker, about "herding" cats.

Anyway, the youtube version of cat wranglers is just about exactly what I mean about coaches.

Anybody who's got more than 2 kids knows how tough it is to keep them on the same task, too. I recall my brother saying something like, "You know, we should have stopped at two. But at least now I know, if we all were drowning and I could only save two of them, one with each hand, which one I'd let go"

He couldn't coach, either.
