You guessed it; looks like GW is working the family connection again...

I have no bone to pick here, but does someone have any idea of how any sons and daughters of famous basketball players or coaches were as good as their fathers?  The children of Jim Larranaga, Gary Williams, and Lefty Driesell were merely average or even below it.  And the same can be said for the daughters of Karl Hobbs and Joe McKeown.

Doc Rivers has a son that played for GU/Indiana and a 2nd son that is the concensus top PG in the country and is headed to Duke.

I think the more relevant factor isn't whether his father is a college coach as much as his father is an ex NBA player.

John Lucas' sons were strong college players as were Harvey Grant's.

I did ask about "as good as their fathers."  I did not ask if they played.

Bryce Drew (father Homer Drew, H.C. Valpo.) also comes to mind.

Nobody mentioned Real Madrid/Pittsburgh Condors' Walt Szczerbiak yet. Not a bad father-son combo.

Stephen and Seth Curry come to mind (sons of Dell Curry).  They were under-recruited coming out of high school but seem to have panned out as decent ball players....

(not done from a google, but off the top of my head) didn't Pistol Pete's Dad play college hoops and coach?  What about that Bibby kid who is still in the NBA?  Give me 10 more seconds and I can likely think of about five others (BTW, I am not even going to the land  of say . . .  Nolan Smith of Duke whose Dad played at Louisville or Kobe Bryant whose pop played for the 76rs with Dr. J before he left for Europe - he's not all that bad, is he?)

I think the winner is Joe and Kobe Bryant.  I thought of Rick Barry's boys and Luke Walton, but I was curious as to whether the sons were better than the fathers and few were.  And Kobe did not go to college.

Then there's MJ and his son, one-time GW recruit Jeffery Jordan who I think walked-on at Illinois but walked-off some time later.

Marshall looks very small (only 160 pounds). He needs to work the next year on bulking up and increasing his strength.

Jimmy Baron at URI was one of the best shooters I've ever seen in the A-10, playing for his father.

Jimmy Walker/Jalen Rose:  Both strong NBA players.   Jalen had a longer career and more seasons with impressive stats, so it seems arguable he was the better NBA player in his time.  Mike Bibby, mentioned earlier, was (still is?) a better NBA player than his father, Henry.

Pete Maravich's father, Pete "Press" Maravich, actually played in the NBA's predecessor for a season, so Pete qualifies as well as a vast improvement on his dad as an NBA player.  (Had to look this one up).   Kiki Vandeweghe's father, Ernie, was a Knick in the early days, making Kiki a qualifier as well.

although techinically not within 109's parameters - I do recall some buzz when I lived in St. Louis that SLU had a shot at Danny Ferry because his father played for the St. Louis Hawks (I recall choking on my lunch laughing at the guy who told me and was serious).  The jury is still out on the May tree (Sean and Scott), Tito was a bust who cost a coach or two a NCAA investigation, his son Al collected a ring on that Florida all Gen II team and now plays with the Hawks, Dunleavy is thought to be better than his father - but I thought his father was a tough SOB who could play.  I never saw his father, Dolph, but all of the Orangmen I knew during the late 80's and 90's swore that Danny Schayes' Dad was the sh!t and was a HOF player.  Shawn Kemp I think was reported to have scores of kids - so somewhere there has to be a good one - right?  I do agree that 109 is right that grabbing a player because his father could play will leave us with herve's point about Sheed who made me upset everytime he took off his warm-ups and walked to the scorer's table.

Diehard (even if it's only every other game): While it's never been a requirement for posting, how many of us have seen Marshall play or read that much about him to be able to make a semi-inteligent assessment of his skills.? 109's introduction of a discussion about bloodlines would seem to be a very reasonable detour, especially when the offspring of guys like Jordan and Ewing didn't quite pan out as fans probably hoped.

Touché Poog.

Btw, my intentions when I originally decided to use my name was that it was a play on the word diehard in the sense that every other game I watch I literally die...hard...because the losses are so bad. But I think i might just take that off and go by DiehaRd now.

ESPN Rates Marshall as an 88

Strengths:
Marshall is long thin wing that has a smooth game. He runs the outside lane on the break with long strides. Marshall moves well without the ball and scores with his excellent mid range game with slashes and floaters from the wing and along the baseline in addition to pull up jumpers where he uses his length to shoot over smaller defenders. He is a good ball handler and good drive, draw and kick passer as well. Marshall is also a good area rebounder on both ends.

Weaknesses:
Adding strength should be at the top of Marshall's to do list. He also must extend his range to where he can make the three point shot a consistent weapon.

Bottom Line:
Marshall is a thin wing with a excellent mid range game. He can score inside the arc in a variety of ways and has a great feel for the game. He must add strength and extend his range but has tremendous upside.

Notes

Son of former UConn and NBA forward Donyell Marshall...
