Not hugely exciting, but a smart move to grab a school with a basektball emphasis, given the alternatives or lack thereof.

I see Davidson as "Butler Lite".   A small school without a football probram that was in a midling conference that is committed to basketball and has great recent success, perhaps mainly due to the efforts of an outstanding coach.  I call them Butler lite because although both schools have had multiple NCAA appearances of late, Butler has made it further at the dance (2X final 4 as opposed to 1X to elite 8).    We were all very happy to have Butler enter the A-10.   I am not sure why all of us are not almost as happy to welcome Davidson.

Everything McGlade does is infinitely better than the absolute best thing Linda Bruno ever did (except maybe leave).

C'mon herve, I used to love Linda Bruno's TV contracts that saw the conference available on a channel that was not even present in the A-10's geographic region.

Not to totally hi-jack this thread, but there is some justice in the world:

http://www.skylineconference.org/news/2010/12/22/GEN_1222104309.aspx

Here are the power-packed members of the Skyline Conference:

  • Farmingdale State
  • Maritime
  • Mount Saint Mary
  • Mount Saint Vincent
  • NYU-Poly
  • Old Westbury
  • Purchase
  • Sage
  • Yeshiva
  • St. Joe's - L.I.

Sounds about Ms. Bruno's speed, of course, that was 3 years ago and it could be the Skyline Conference has already grown tired of her empty chair doing her job as well as her.

LSF, Davidson has a recent alum still alive in the NBA playoffs. I can't remember the last time we had an alum dress in regular season game post Pops and Hall.

Wow.   Had no idea that's where Bruno was.   That's quite an indictment of her reputation in the college sports world.   She could t even land at a low major league or a highly paid position inappropriate college sports?

The Presidents and ADs control so much that its hard to know, as a fan, what is or isn't the Commish's doing, but that tells a lot.

As for Davidson, great basketball addition and keeps us in Charlotte market. Very interesting to now have VCU, Richmond, mason, and Davidson - when roughly a dozen years ago we were the southernmost school.   Will be very interested to see how they so.

Lastly, credit to Nero, who I think was a driving force behind this.

Davidson will officially join the Atlantic 10 today. Solid addition. Which program could be next down the road? Don't count out Stony Brook.

Davidson could even get us, or at least the A-10, some WaPo or local news coverage if they can drag out the ol' Lefthander when Davidson is announced or comes to town to play us.  I bet he's got some wild and woolly stories from his Davidson days.  I knew those teams were good, but looking back at his record, damn if he didn't get them to the Elite Eight twice.

Can only imagine the excitement that would be generated at a recipient conference's schools if they were adding GW to their membership. This is a solid pickup for a smaller but similarly situated academic institution. Driven by men's bball but consolidates Atlantic coast stretch with school likely to stick around.

only 1 or 2 teams in the nation made it as far as Butler did to the NCAA championship game twice in two seasons. that is not a downgrade on Davidson resume.

let's hope we have better luck against Davidson than when i went to GW in the late 60s and early 70s. Lefty did pretty good for a guy who many said couldn't coach winning conference coach of the year 9 times in 4 different conferences. he might have gotten MD to the Promised Land if Moses didn't go pro. Davidson is Butler very, very, very lite.

Kind of ambivalent about this addition.  I understand that there aren't any Xavier's or Butler's out there to add.  I wish the A10 would just hit the pause button on future additions until things play out. There are enough teams to field a conference right now.  There is no need to stretch to add teams that really aren't A10 caliber.

Davidson is a good school academically, and I like the move South.  There are some good teams in the Midwest but would they join knowing that Dayton and SLU might be leaving?  The northeast doesn't have any strong programs right now, or they would be obvious additions.  And yes, if Linda Bruno were still running the show she would have quickly added Iona and Fairfield and thought it was a great move.

Wow, I guess that what makes for horse racing.  I couldn't imagine doing any realistically better than George Mason and Davidson.  (Assumes SLU and Dayton will be leaving and are not being replaced with Missouri Valley or other midwestern schools.)

Based on local alum from Davidson (including doctors, lawyers, execs, and elected officials) I see people at Davidson, Richmond, VCU, GMU and GW games. I am not seeing the folks rolling into Providence to see the Butler or Depaul games. I think it's a good pick-up both media-wise and being affiliated with a good academic school with a solid tradition.
