Former Montrose Christian PG Ty Johnson transferring from Villanova 2 days before the season starts. Former top 50 recruit. Pure speculation, but does anything think we'll get involved? There are certainly some connections there.

Apparently transferring after Fall, so we have some time to see if a sport opens up.  Here is a thread from the VU board on him before he announced his decision.

Played at Montrose but from NY area so no real DC connection. Doubt ligtning will strike twice with the Nova transfers.

Question:  If he transfers out after the fall semester, but doesn't play any games, does he have three years of eligibility remaining or two and a half?  I'm guessing the latter.

Unless things have changed, he is enrolled, so it is 2.5 ... I believe. He is eligible after the fall semester ends, I believe. As so many other things have changed, I could easily be wrong. Someone else was in this position a while back. Not sure who... maybe Regis.

Just not sure why he would deny himself the playing time for the first semester if he doesn't get anything out of it.

BM, there is a terrible conflict if all he is doing is getting some out of C. games in and he is planning on leaving for some other destination. Conflict is also why I think that ending up at GW is a far fetched idea. It would look a lot like tampering. Basically, he has to cut his ties with the program if he is going to leave Nova after this semester.

btw, not to "muddy the waters," but this is also why there are probably volumes of materials associated with the Wells situation vis-a-vis X and MD and the NCAA rulings.

Finally, at this point, it is much better for the student to complete his current semester at Nova, even if he knows that he will be moving on. The last thing that he should do is mess up his classwork on top of extending his career in college. This is an opportunity to get a Masters. It gives him a chance to make a reasoned decision and also to get the class work to a good level.

per the regis situation...

each player has five years to complete four seasons of participation.  if a sophomore plays the first semester and then transfers, he has to sit out and then only has 1.5 years left, because he can only play in four different seasons.  that's what happened to regis.

if you transfer mid-year but did not play any games during the fall semester, then you are eligible for the second semester and you have 2.5 years left because you only played in one season (freshman year) at your first school.

A little bit of Facebook stalking shows that Lonergan recently became friends with Johnson on Facebook. So who knows....

The key, however, is the athlete's standing in class. One day = 1/2 season in the fall.

MV, I saw a video where Nigel Johnson said that he was interested in Nova. ... funny. As with most of the videos out there, timing was hard to establish.

Re: Ty Johnson

He got neutered by Jay like every other decent recruit.  A solid candidate to be Jay's next annual transfer.

Re: Ty Johnson
The kid is a pg who can't beat his man off the dribble and has no jump shot. Other than that he's ok.

I read that Villanova board from time to time and they show NO MERCY on the Villanova players and coaches, some of you may think that a couple posters here are rough on GW, they have nothing on those Villanova posters!! LOL

About Ty Johnson, based on the way he played in high school, I'd expect him to become one of the top guards in the A-10 if he transferred to GW, but the problem is, wouldn't bringing in a point guard cut into minutes and development of Joe McDonald, Keithan Savage, Nick Griffin and the other guard(s) who GW is recruiting for 2013?? It must be a tough spot for Mike Lonergan because I don't think he could've imagined that a player like Ty Johnson(he may have been a top 50 player coming out of Montrose in 2011) would be available to him.

He would definitely be a good recruit for GW -- Here's what his ESPN recruiting profile said:

Strengths:
Johnson is lead guard with terrific size, strength, and length for his position. He sees the court and puts immediate pressuring on the defense by advancing the ball with the pass or the dribble. He can make plays in the quarter court by shaking his man to either side and utilizes his size and athleticism to finish at wide angles away from his body. He is also adept at using the ball screen, able to read his defender and either turn the corner, reject the screen, or pull-up from behind the arc. Defensively, he has all the physical tools necessary to blossom into a lock-down defender.

Weaknesses:
Johnson isn't quite a pure point guard and tends to be much more effective in the open court than he is a half-court game. He is a streaky perimeter shooter who will do his best to avoid shooting the long range jumper and is unlikely to shoot a high percentage at the next level. While he has all the physical tools to eventually become a good defender, he needs to get much lower in his stance without gambling or standing up. Johnson also needs to improve his ability to play without the ball in his hands.

Bottom Line:
Johnson is best described as a power guard who needs the ball in his hands to be effective. He is an undeniably talented playmaker who must continue to develop his point guard instincts and improve the consistency of his jump shot to take his game to the next level.
