Story in today's Inquirer about Maureece Rice - has a quote from Hobbs as well.

Every story has many sides, typically more than we ever truly know or understand. It's just never clear whether nice talk and double speak ultimately protects or harms the individuals involved.

"I was kind of left out. I wanted to know what I was doing wrong so I could correct it," said Rice. "But there was no way to get an answer, so I got frustrated and just said 'I'm done.' "

Clear as day?

My understanding is that Hobbs was planning to hand the keys to the team over to Rice that year.  He had some death/illness issues with his Mom and Grandmom the Spring/Summer before and just showed up at GW with a totally f'ed up attitude.  It completely caught the coaching staff off guard.  They hadn't ever had a problem with Rice prior to that and he was angry and disruptive from the start of the year.  At one point early in the season, Rice went home to Philly and simply didn't come back to GW when he was supposed to with no word to the coaches including missing some practices.  This may have been the incident that led to Rice being suspended the first time -- at UMBC (I believe) - when JK told me to my face that Rice had the flu.

Things never really got better and Rice was kicked off the team after getting into a fistfight with Cheyanne Moore in the lockerroom after a game in the Spring.

Rice has always spoken ill of Hobbs since and Hobbs has never said anything critical of Rice in public since.  All really just too bad.

Another example of Jack Kvancz's dishonesty.

Correct Squid - could you please tell that to LFO who can't finish a post without including Kvancz etc. whether it is remotely relevant to the topic or not.

Too bad he is not talking about playing in Europe as a springboard to something else.  He is not getting any younger.  Dreams are nice, but at some point you have to wake up.

Did he get his degree? If not, I hope he's not dragging his butt on getting that done. There are lots of jobs he'll be qualified for, but if he wants coaching at an "educational" institution, he'll need to at least be able to check off that box. Breaking another guy's legs isn't a qualification for doing much.

Diageo: You know I'm on your side of that fence. But try to remember, it's Herve's playpen.

It's not at all shocking to me that Jack lied right to Thinker's face.  There are many examples of dishonesty that came out of our former AD's office.  I suspect, that if pressed, Maureece would confirm the serious dysfunction that was GW basketball during his last two years here.  I'm of the opinion that much of that dysfunction eminated from the offices of Jack and Dom.  And, to me, it's sad for Maureece. He had the talent and the tenacity to take his game to the next level.  But the program let him down.  I think if there was more excitement, the program had been run professionally and Jack hadn't begun to back Karl into a corner, things could have worked out differently for Rice.  I know he had some issues at home, but I think he would have flourished at GW in his senior season and beyond.   Instead of reading an article like this, we should have been reading about how well Reece was doing in Europe, or maybe even the NBA.

He's actually one of my favorite KH era players. Never seen a guy with quite his feel for the game. If anything, LFO, I'd say GW gave Mr. Rice an outsized opportunity, based on his rather checkered high school academic career. He and Omar were poster children for the worst of KH's excesses. The school paid for it, actually having to go out and publicly announce GW does not require a high school diploma for admission. Rice then walks away from a degree that's now generally worth around $225,000. I don't think he was screwed, just one of the scores of young kids in the college recruiting game who failed to cash in his end. Hard to see any winners, except do you remember that stepback-J dagger to beat Xavier in Cincinnati?
