GW has interest according to @Ballin365dotcom

ESPN Rates him as a 78

Here's their scouting report:

Strengths:
An attacking young swingman with plenty of talent, Severe shows some early signs of upside and potential. He gets to the rim north to south as well as east to west with a quick first step and good economy of motion. He runs hard in transition, has dexterity putting the ball on the floor and finishing, and actually prefers to drive left. Severe is also a capable shot maker off the catch or the dribble with terrific shot preparation for a youngster. We like his frame as well as he boasts a naturally strong core with long arms.

Weaknesses:
At first glance Severe doesn't have any noticeable flaws. When he gets it going he's able to put the ball in the basket in a number of ways. Consistency is his biggest challenge right now along with continuing to develop his I.Q. and decision making. Defensively, Severe has the physical tools to eventually be very good and only needs to solidify his fundamental principles.

Bottom Line:
A good looking young prospect who shows a lot of positive signs offensively, Severe is one of the top young swingman in the New York City area in the class of 2013.

It would nice to get in this pipeline from CTK, as Mason has done well with Pearson and Edwards. I think GW's last connection was Kristeena Alexander, who transferred in.

At first I read that as a verbal.  then, I realized it's probably him saying he's visiting GW more as a courtesy to reward GW for recruting him hard than becuase he really has us at the top of his list.

NBEBasketball

Jon Severe (NY Lightning 2013) – Severe is a hardnosed NYC guard who can really space the floor by knocking down jump shots. He established the long ball early in a win over D-One Sports and then utilized a strong shot fake to sneak past defenders and get into the paint. While Severe’s scoring mentality serves him well at times, I would like to see him create for others a bit more. He has a tendency to force the issue offensively rather than letting things come to him and could be even more dangerous if he learns to pick his spots.

Jon Severe (NY Lightning 2013) – Severe listed Florida State, Cincinnati, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Drexel, Seton Hall, Providence and George Washington as schools in the mix for him while acknowledging there were probably a few others he couldn’t think of. Of those schools Severe stressed multiple times that George Washington is pushing for him the hardest and really making him a priority but didn’t necessarily suggest that made them his leader. He said that all the schools are basically equal at this point. Severe plans to narrow it down in August once he has time to step back and process everything.

NY Post update on Severe taking the reigns at CTK, mentioning GW and several others:

Motivated by playoff ouster, Severe ready to lead Christ the King

Last Updated: 9:57 PM, July 28, 2012

Posted: 9:41 PM, July 28, 2012

Jon Severe hears it all the time. Everyone, from friends to classmates and even opponents, ask him how it feels to be the one who will be taking the bulk of shots next year for Christ the King.

Severe stops them.

“It’s not going to be anything new,” he tells them. “I’m not that type of player. I’m going to play team basketball.”

The graduation of UConn recruit Omar Calhoun and the likely transfer of rising senior Isaiah Lewis has -- and ultimately will -- shine a light on Severe, the highly recruited 6-foot-2 shooting guard. He does see an opportunity to emerge as the Royals’ leader, along with fellow soon-to-be seniors Jordan Fuchs and Malik Harmon, but Severe doesn’t expect his role to suddenly change.

CHRISTINA SANTUCCI
Christ the King's Jon Severe is ready to lead his teammates this winter.

He’s not going to start jacking up 20 shots per game. During last winter’s frustrating season, when every win was followed by a surprising loss and CK was upset by Mount St. Michael in the CHSAA Class AA intersectional quarterfinals, Severe took mental notes of what was missing.

“Last season nobody communicated,” he said. “We didn’t have any leaders. Everybody was basically doing themselves.”

Severe is quick to note that’s not a knock on Calhoun, the school’s all-time leading scorer. Calhoun, Severe said, was quiet by nature. Severe isn’t exactly chatty himself, but he plans to change.

“I know what to do to win and I how to talk to my teammates, not bringing them down, making them better,” Severe said.

As soon as the AAU season ends Sunday night, Severe said he will be at Christ the King every day working out, and will reach out to his teammates to join him.

Christ the King coach Joe Arbitello doesn’t think he will have one players next year people will look to, but a group of them, six or seven guys that will play for each other. Being that Severe is the highest recruited player back, is coming off a big high school and AAU season, he will be looked to even more.

“Guys respect that fact he was never one of those guys that tried to proclaim he was better than someone else on the team, he’s always been quiet and gone about his business the right way,” Arbitello said. “Being a leader in that respect, I do think so. When the younger players look up to someone, they look at Jon. His game speaks for itself. He doesn’t need to do anything to make himself look like a better player.”

Severe has enjoyed a big AAU summer with the New York Lightning, getting the chance to play on the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League circuit and leading the Lightning to the finals of the Nike Invitational in Augusta, Ga. recently.

His recruitment is on the rise, with offers from Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Xavier, Dayton, George Washington, Seton Hall and South Carolina, among others. Severe plans to cut down his list in August, begin to take visits and commit sometime in the fall or early in the winter.

He’s more focused on his final year at Christ the King, getting the program back to where he feels it belongs. That has nothing to do with taking more shots, Severe said, it’s about leadership and accountability -- qualities he is ready to take on.

“It’s my senior year, I want to win,” he said. “I don’t want to lose in the playoffs.”

Obviously Severe is being recruited by a bunch of majors and he would be great at GW.  I wonder if the coaches think that we really have much of a shot - ML & CO have already gotten a verbal from a 2013 SG - Nick Griffin.  Also obviously there are still a number of ways that things could work out -- such as Garino being able to play SG and whether Lasan ends up staying for his redshirt senior year.  But the 2012 graduating seniors are Bynes, Pellom and Smith - and GW clearly is in the market for forwards and point guards as well as the one big guy from Florida.  Obviously there are some Savage fans who believe that he could be a backup PG but I think ML still wants to get another PG next year.  Then one wonders if 2 SG recruits in 2013 makes the roster a bit lopsided with too many SGs - potentially Savage, Lasan, Griffin, and Severe.

9/16/2012 8:21:45 PM

It gets a bit more complicated since we're also recruiting Rene Castro hard. He's more of a PG than Griffin and Severe, but also a huge scoring threat. I guess Griffin is being pigeon holed as a shooter.

BM, Lonergan will go with a lot of guards, if they are 6'2 and above. I think that the most confusing thing to a fan is that we watched Lonergan coach last year's GW team that he didn't build. Right now, we have 3 legit guards and 2 small forwards who can handle the ball. I could see him building the number of "GUARDs"   on the roster to five.

Also, he isn't the "water-bug" kinda guy--however, if they were really good, I could see him take a small guy. The problem is on the defensive end.

Of course, this is based just on watching him and his teams. We may see our team start to rain 3's just as long as they are open looks for good shooters.

Severe plays the combo position and the new URI commit is a top 100 scoring PG.  I'm implying that Severe may think twice about signing with URI (or URI may back away from Severe).

URI's top 100 recruit EC Mathews wants to exclusively play pg.  He indicated that URI would allow him to do that right away and he would be able to learn the position from Dan Hurley, Bobby Hurley, and Preston Murphy who all played pg in college.  He does not see himself as a combo guard.

URI's other top 150 commit of the weekend Hassan Martin, who was in Kingston with Severe this past weekend is a forward.

Hmmm...

From thi$ interview, it seems like we're still recruiting Severe too.

"The only [reason] I'm considering George Washington is [because] I'll be able to start my freshman year as a scorer," said Severe, noting the staff's intention on playing him right away. "They want me to come in as a scorer and, as years [progress], they're going to put me in as a slasher."

I don't think he was assured a starting spot.  I think that meant they would start him out as a scorer, before making him a slasher - I don't really know what that means, but I didn't read that to mean that he would automatically be in the starting lineup.

I would say to stop recruiting him for that comment.  We don't need guys who are only considering us because they think they will start here and that's it.  GW basketball has been in a serious rut over the last few years, but this program has had some good years.  There is no need o belittle it with a comment like that.  Have fun playing at Duquesne Jon and watch in a couple of years when your team is losing to GW by 20.

From Rivals

2013 Christ the King (NY) 6-foot-1 shooting guard Jon Severe could have chosen between four Atlantic-10 schools in the fall, and could have finished his recruiting process, but instead waited things out. His recruitment has blown up because of that move.

As he is playing his best ball during his senior campaign, Severe no longer has to decide between St. Bonaventure, Duquesne, Rhode Island and George Washington, although all schools except for George Washington are still involved with him.

Since Jon Severe is not Scott Boras playing one suitor against another for a larger and longer contract, one would have to feel that GW should be concerned about Severe's delaying his announcement until after the spring signing period. Certainly maximizes his flexibility assuming everyone currently interested stays so. Positive reaction attributed to him concerning Creighton's recent involvement in his recruiting and their entrance into the new Big East at least suggests that GW confidence in being able to land him may be wavering. Not sure where the May 22 timing coincides with NBA draft declarations but no doubt his recent accolades tip the scale in his favor. Probably not so for GW. Big question is whether ML and staff have a Plan B target and whether they would pursue it proactively.

Mrs. herve has weighed-in and says acl/pcl injury. With good rehab and rest he would lose 15% max of what he had before and, because of his age, could be 100% of previous capacity. Here's my cliff notes version before she started saying things I no longer understood (and really fast too): it was a non-impact injury which means he took-off funny or it was already somewhat unstable and the force of taking off for the dunk caused the in-air injury. He could initially walk-off because the body had not kicked-in to cause swelling, but once the severity of it is recognized, the body become highly unstable.

Regardless, PLEASE choose GW. It's a great school in a great city and we really want to win...and can offer starter's minutes in October.

First thing I thought when I saw the post was what does Mrs. Herve say?

Thanks, Herve, for letting us know. He would be able to play this year, it looks like.

herve, fairly common situation--that's how I blew out my left/stronger knee and, and why I wasn't a consistent dunker after that. (LOL)  --  however my experience at UH was like that where you just hear/feel pop and at first it seems almost OK.

Well that's over.  At least we don't have to wait until May 22nd.  So what's next?

Oh, apparently the Dukes are in it too ... so this could sting even more over next four years

"Jon Severe forgot to mention Duquesne on his cut list. The 2013 SG is officially down to Pitt, Wake Forest, Fordham, SHU, WVU & Duquesne."

Wow. We can't make the cut but Fordham and the Dukes do. Ouch. Start lining-up the rabbits and the hats and somebody page David Blaine's glass box.

Not really. Nobody stopped recruiting Nigel after he committed to GWU, right?

Now's the time to step things up. Let Severe know that GW really, really, really wants him, and keep charging after him.

But, keep pursuing options as though ML is building a program, with or without this guy; and fill the gaping holes we have with whatever guys we can recruit for the next 1-2 years, until ML and his coaches have better, stronger, and more compelling connections for those 4 year commits.

My guess, old TP will be happy to give ML a short list of recruitable JUCO's who can play the backup at point, and take over the designated 3 point shooter spot from Mikic. Maybe even a guy or two who doesn't have to stop the entire flow of a game to shoot. And all of Tommy's boys can run, even if they can't even spell defense.

Loyola Jimmy can help out, too, directing departing guys from both Sienna and Loyola to the Buff. So long as there are phones, there's recruiting.

And, Northeast Oklahoma A&M School of Mining and Welding has 2 or 3 guys who might fit. Together, they may give us a solid player.

I have no idea why anybody would give up, just because of this post. He's a kid. He has no idea what's best for him (GWU). And if he decides to go elsewhere, the world is our oyster. (ziik, jr. told me that, just a day or so ago, when I got some bad medical news. So, its got to be true.)

I don't think you give up, but it kind of says that GW isn't exactly at the top of his mind.  All ML can do at this point is tell Severe that if he comes to GW he will start, and a lot of the offense will run through him.  I know some people here would say a guaranteed starting job is ludicrous, but ML has to feel the pressure to land guys like nothing else right now.  His future job security is kind of on the line.

The starting role offer is something ML has tried with Nigel and Kromah in recent weeks, and it didn't work with them.  But I'm not sure what else he can say to Sever right now to get on the final schools list.

So let me get this straight, the best player in NY, at best, might go to Pitt, or Wake, or Seton Hall.

Poor Severe  he has as much chance at winning an NCAA game at Pitt as he does with GW and Pitt makes the tournament every year.

Good for them?  No, not quite my initial reaction.  I'm as magnanimous as the next guy but come on.  Wonder if Lonergan, who spent countless hours watching this kid play,  said "good for Fordham" when he heard the news?

Players fleeing, verbal commits  de-committing.  Losing a recruit to FORDHAM!!! sorry but if Lonergan does not come back from the Baltics with  a player, I am officially pressing the panic button.

We already knew he wasn't going to GW. So you'd rather him sign with Pitt or Seton Hall?

No, Good for Fordham.  Good for the confernce too since Fordham's been dragging us all down in the RPI for too long.

Really glad he is going to an A-10 school.  Mike Lonergan is going to land a player - even if he has to go to Lithuania, Estonia or Kazakhstan to do it.

 Not really that surprised.

1. He went local.

2. At the very least, he knows he'll be able to chuck shots up and have freedom on a bad team.  If Fordham starts winning, he could potentially be seen as the guy who catalyzed the turnaround.

+1 CT Colonial, makes sense for him and it's always good when top talent goes to the A10 - particularly Fordham.

Interesting place this board.  Four posters are "happy" that he stayed in the A10.  Happy that a guy we really wanted and who was also considering some major programs is ending up at a school that we will have to play against 1-3 times a season.  Sure Fordham gets better, but I'm not sure how happy anyone here will be if it comes at GW's expense.

Pecora interview re Severe. Pecora mentions Severe placing high value on a Ram degree and them selling what the alumni network means decades from now. He talked about the advantage they had b/c many Catholic league games were played at Rose Hill. Added Severe is a natural scorer.

As much effort as GW put in without even making his cut list, it sounds like Fordham/asst. coach David Duke put a tremendous amount of effort into keeping Severe in the five boroughs.
