Did you know?...App.St. is in Boone, NC, 713 miles and a 7 hour drive from DC... also has Charlotte on its schedule this year...is a member of the Southern Conference (as was GW and West Virginia back in the Jerry West days)...is ranked #8 in the Preseason ESPN/USA Today poll for D-IAA football...nickname is the Mountaineers (which means GW will have three games vs. "Mountaineers" this year)...Bobby Cremins coached at App.St. in the 70's...current Coach is Houston Fancher...coach touts the two "very challenging" tournaments this year...App.St. has five opponents scheduled with finishing RPI's in the Top 100 last year...VMI left the Southern Conference this year; Elon joins...2003 Southern Conference Basketball Tournament was "The Mountain Dew Championship"...the Southern Conference introduced the 3-point shot to college basketball in 1980, and things have never been the same...Deter Coakley, Dallas Cowboy, was a three-time All-American for App.St...Annual Mountaineer Fun Fest is THIS WEEKEND! I'll see you there! Larry King

I recall making fun of Marshall at Marshall, Delaware at Delaware, and Navy at Navy years ago. On each occasion, after I ate my words, they gave me "acid reflu" all the way home. Go ahead, laugh at ASU. Or were you the guy who laughed at AU last year, or maybe 10 other years? Laughed when GW went to lose at Bradley? Hey remember I O W A? GW needs to win these games, then get back to play the big boys and beat them. If I was scheduling, I'd be happy to play most any better known school twice for every return trip, to build up the schedule and to add some marketability to the Big Red Tourney. Should we keep the Big Red? Hey, its less of a laugher than the Indiana Classic. Check that one out every year--Indiana schedules 3 guaranteed wins.

BTW, App State is a powerhouse in I-AA football. App State is also in a dry county- Watauga- and their big rivalries are with Western Carolina and East Tennessee State.

App State is a long drive away from Asheville, NC- it's at least a four hour drive from Biltmore to Appalachian State. Enjoy the Dan'l Boone Inn there in Boone and the new Holmes Convocation Center.

Isn't Boone where they found that freak Olympic and abortion clinic bomber? The one that the locals wouldn't turn in because the "feds had it out for him?" Yeah, think I'll pass on that trip!

Hatchet Man, the guy you are thinking of was found much further West. Probably about 3-4 hours away. By the way, Dirty South overstates the distance to Ashville. Having been to both Boone and Asheville within the last year, I can tell you it's not a 4 hour difference (probably more like 2 or 2 and half). Tim4, I would suggest making the trip -- it's beautiful around there and you won't have to travel that far to find a bar.

I was just being a little toungue in cheek. Any team with a 19-11 record, even losing four starters, can't be sneezed at. I didn't mention that their likely starting SG nearly lost his hand about two years ago and was out last season for rehab. He will likely start again this year. Also, there are a lot of old connections between the schools and some of our competitors this year.

Years ago I worked with a journalist whose resume said "Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize." Left unsaid was that he had nominated himself. NOBODY gets a FREE SHIRT unless Herve, Mrs. Herve, FQ, BM and ELJ nominate and vote on it. Besides, the shirt carries an obligation to be worn, and BIG RED carries an obligation to be worn at The BIG RED TOURNEY. Cherry Red. Mandarin orange. A great and enduring ZZTop combo.

I hear it's a stoner school. Lots of kids taking glass-blowing classes and what not. And some stoner kids from my HS in Knoville went there, so there's some evidence I guess. Maybe their players will be like Lamar Odom and get high before the game. Ecept play badly, unlike Lamar.

App State is a nice school. It has more undergradustes than GW and probably ranks as the third best academic school in the UNC system behind UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State. It's about 2 hours from Asheville, 1 1/2 from Charlotte and 1 hour from Winston-Salem. It's in a beautiful part of NC and has nice skiing in the winter. They opened a new basketball facility recently which I believes seats about 10,000. I think UNC played there. I would not take them lightly. They do have some BB tradition. Buzz Peterson coached there as well as Bobby Cremins and Press Maravich(Pete's dad). All in all it would be a nice trip although the leaves will be gone and not time for skiing yet.
