GW continuing the international route under Maurice Joseph. Get Javier Langarica, 6-9 forward from Bilbao, Spain. Will be in 2017 class.

Looks like a player will need to add bulk but has great size and is skilled and athletic finally some positive news.

front row center5/17/2017 11:12:43 AM

From the video it looks like we just signed another international 6'9 lefty.  I agree some added bulk will be nice. It looked like he could be pushed around by smaller players in the paint. Maybe that was just positioning, but added strength is always nice.

mike k5/17/2017 11:14:03 AM

Looks like he was still looking for a scholarship in Feb 2017

mike k5/17/2017 11:15:00 AM

Welcome Javier!  Best of luck on and off the court.

Another addition to the collection!!

Wow, that's a lot of travelling he's got going on there, even by today's standards.  That said, a welcome addition.

gw725/17/2017 12:50:36 PM

International. Good. Is the player?

goggles5/17/2017 1:15:02 PM

Has some skills. Inside and outside. Is he a legit 6'9?  Just 17 right?

notta hater5/17/2017 1:25:58 PM

Don't get me wrong - I love the US and I love GW, but who would want to leave Bilbao?!

long suffering fan5/17/2017 1:50:14 PM

I thought the same thing, Rocket, about the traveling.   Now...can someone explain why we should be excited about this recruit, as I couldn't find anything else on him other than the You Tube scouting report..  Bo...since you seemed to have the inside scoop, could you share what impressed the staff?  Still hoping for more immediate help in the form of an immediately eligible transfer, because right now we appear to be a bottom feeder with Yuta, Steeves and, um...ugh...(did I mention Yuta?)

greenpoint ny5/17/2017 2:23:58 PM

LSF - Bottom feeder? Not sure about that. We have a young team and a new coach with little experience. I wouldnt expect us to compete for the a10 championship anytime soon. Just because javier doesnt have a "rating" I wouldnt assume he is not capable of playing in the league. Why is everyone so confused lol Mojo is building the team he feels can compete regardless if you think the player is impressive or not. These kids aren't coming out of HS/Prep. Most if not all will need to work on their game, gain weight, and understand the system mojo wants to implement. One damn video and the critics come running..people need to relax this isnt kenutucky basketball for god sakes.

the mv5/17/2017 2:25:00 PM

VerbalRecruits has him as a 2 star player with no other schools having offered.  Could be a diamond in the rough, a complete bust, or something in between.  This one really screams "who knows?"

That said, I'm wondering Bo if this is the "more good news" coming our way.  There are still some open spots so maybe Bo had someone else in mind.  If this was it, I am hopeful you have some additional information.  The mere fact that we signed someone to fill out our roster who hadn't appeared to make much headway with other US schools strikes me more as news than good news.  I am hopeful you can add some nuggets to help add more excitement and optimism towards this signing.

the dude5/17/2017 2:36:31 PM

First observations:

1. Glad to see a return to an international recruit.

2. Has some good ball skills, handle looks ok. He's a lefty but shoots from long range right handed! Could serve him well if he's ambidextrous or quasi ambidextrous.

3. Primary skill, even though most of the film shows methodical drives to the rim, appears to be a his 3 point range at 6'9.

4. Not a great athlete.  Doesn't look very explosive or hoppy, so he'll need to do it at this level with skill, finesse and range shooting.

5. Makes me think this is what Steeves HS film from 5 years would look like.  At first glance I see him in that vain, Steevesish.

nj colonial5/17/2017 2:44:27 PM

More good news... I like the MoJo momentum!

the dude5/17/2017 2:45:01 PM

Two more:

6. 17 years old

7. 7'0 (reportedly) wingspan

ziik the tentmaker5/17/2017 2:45:31 PM

He looks like he needs a shoulder transplant (bilateral), a first step, strength, and quickness.

He looks an awful lot, in terms of overall talent, to be the functional equivalent and a big guy who just transferred out of GW.

I wonder if he will last more than 2 years.

(Sorry to sound so suffering-like)

bo knows5/17/2017 2:54:39 PM

Yes this was the guy but I believe we are close to perhaps one more big. That one is not yet wrapped up. If I hear otherwise, I will let you all know.

I posted some of my response in the other thread MV. He is a European big - well-skilled, technically sound. He will need to adjust to speed/strength of US game. He is versatile - can play inside or shoot threes. Passes well. Stretch 4 would be where I see him initially. Will be in rotation but how much will be dependent on his adjustment and the development of others on the roster. I doubt he takes A-10 by storm but do hear he has potential down the road. More skilled than Kevin Larsen but not nearly as strong. Matt Johnson will work with him and get him right.

Hope this is a diamond-in-the-rough, not the Second Coming of Matt Albitron (pun intended).

the mv5/17/2017 3:01:06 PM

Thanks Bo.  Good to hear he's projected to be an immediate rotation player as we will really need the help in the frontcourt.

thinker5/17/2017 3:46:29 PM

I think I have mostly sworn off the notion that I have any ability to project HS players based on mixtape highlights.

I am still stinging from my optimistic reports on Jonathon Davis in HS.

In my head (not out loud) I watched Marfo highlights and thought - MAN that will really translate.

So I will say that if MoJo really wanted him then I want him and hope that he'll be a good player for us.

long suffering fan5/17/2017 4:08:53 PM

Greenpoint...I know "bottom feeder" is a bit rough, but we start off with the general proposition that while we may get some contribution from the incoming freshman class, I am seeing nothing along the lines of an "impact" player who will step in and become a major factor in the Atlantic 10.   If we are not going to dwell near the bottom, we need to see a big jump from Toro, Smith (who also most show an ability to stay on the Court for more than 12 minutes per game without fouling out) and Bolden, each of whom are potentially nice players but we are hardly talking Garino, Larsen and JoeMac.   No juniors on the team and the only seniors/graduates are Yuta and Steeves.  So, unless I am forgeting someone (no I have not forgotten Williams), we have five players who have played before, with only Yuta as someone I would consider a solid A-10 player at this point.   Or let me put it another way...if we were at a conference game last season and they announced that Cavanaugh, Sina and Roland would not be playing, what would you think our chances would have been?

gw695/17/2017 4:33:06 PM

Unfortunately I agree with LSF--no impact player other than Yuta.

Who knows about the new kid.--could be a good addition or end up

like Cimino or Paris.

greenpoint ny5/17/2017 4:36:21 PM

LSF im not arguing that we are even .500 or higher team this year. My point is that "growing pains" are going to be discussed early and often lol. I cant say im not a little intrigued by the 180 mojo has created. Will this work? I have no idea..When I think of bottom dwellers I think of fordham lol I would love to see us land a solid transfer but I also am realisitic that the we have some drawbacks. The GW brand can only do so much and Im not necesssarily convinced players place a top academic university as a priority during the recruiting process. Personally, I like the energy Mojo exerts and it looks like he is bringing in players that have high energy/good character/academic ability. If Javy is as skilled as Kev and is more dynamic I would be extremely happy. Yuta, Bolden, Smith (w/o fouling) can be solid players next year. Lets stay positive! Raise High!!

bigfan5/17/2017 5:37:24 PM

Welcome Javier!

You will be in a great international city.

Listen to your coaches and work to gain weight and strength, especially. If you work hard and take advantage of academics, friendship and sportsmanship, it can be a great four years.

shit5/17/2017 5:54:00 PM

We're fucked next year

bigfan5/17/2017 5:55:05 PM

With the pleasantries out of the way, video looks good.

But who knows what level of competition? Looks like neither strong nor quick opponents. But hard to say from these clips.

Don't know if he is a reach or a diamond in the rough, but kudos to Mojo for at least keeping the international pipeline going. At this point, we are getting a bit anxious to say the least, so this is worth a shot if he is a quality young man off the court.

Appears to be at least somewhat reminiscent of Yuta, though not a fluid or even as quick.

Really nice shooting touch, at least from the videos. Though largely unguarded, really nice touch. For decades from Jarvis to Mojo, we are not great about freeing up three-point shooters, so hope this can change.

Also, after watching four years of Kevin Laren who was a great contributor and highly skilled in some areas, but didn't take advantage of his size, one word to Javier: dunk.

im4gwu5/17/2017 6:26:00 PM

If he needs to get bigger and stronger and is willing to work then Matt Johnson will get him there.

2 6:34:29 PM

@Thinker If he's from Bilbao he will probably request this flag:

Basque Flag

crispus attucks colonial5/17/2017 6:35:38 PM

sorry that was me ^

notta hater5/18/2017 6:27:24 AM

when I read the posts I think how moronic we really are (I am including myself) in assessing the folks based on  "highlight" clips posted on social media. He looks decent to me. He does travel a bit (which means his first step quickness may not be that quick) and he does seem to scan the court. I have no idea if he can defend or if he has any intention of getting into the paint to rough it up a bit. He looks a ton better than some of the others I have seen come into our program in the past 25 years as a "big" however. I can wait and see and instead for the time being focus on whether the Nats can get a bullpen before mid-June.

thinker5/18/2017 9:50:05 AM

Thank you Crispus for your definitely improved flag selection!

That gives me an idea for another thread - If each player could choose their own personal flag (based on anything they want) to be displayed at games - what would we imagine it would be?

bo knows5/18/2017 10:01:08 AM

Thank you Notta. This is what the Dude has never understood. Player evaluation is NEVER done solely or even mostly just off of tape, especially highlight tape. MOCO Observer who I hope will come back to the board watches game tapes and goes to see kids in person BEFORE recommending them to any school. It is a hard enough business to properly evaluate because you have see how a high school game/AAU game translates to college. Apart from the evaluation of where a player is currently there are intangibles like can he get stronger, does he have a work ethic, good character, are weaknesses fixable or can be improved etc. These intangibles and talent evaluations cannot be done in cyberspace and only a fool suggests they can.

bigfan5/18/2017 10:33:01 AM

Taking coach's word Javier can play and worth a shot at this point, anyway.Especially given his size, though he needs some bulk which we hopefully can give him.

Do feel highlight reels hardly tell the whole story. Though in Javier's case, seems to.have a sweet shot in the ones on the video. Question is he can get it off in much faster-paced competition.

And again, welcome Javier!

Curious about one thing: did we scout Javier live in Spain?

bo knows5/18/2017 10:47:19 AM

Not certain Bigfan but I believe the answer is yes. Will try to find out.

greenpoint ny5/18/2017 11:49:10 AM

I showed the Javy video to a friend who played D1 basketball and he sees potential. He feels that if Javy can develop and outside game it would dramatically help our athletic guards go to the rim. The key was that he moved well for his size (even if he traveled) lol. Appears to me that Mojo's plan is on track by picking up a skilled big.

the mv5/18/2017 11:49:27 AM

Bo, while you are finding out, I'm curious as to whether any other American schools showed interest.  Internet searches are showing nothing but as we know, this is not the ultimate authority.  Did any other school offer a scholarship?  If not, did any come to see him play in person?

notta hater5/18/2017 12:33:42 PM

with draft day upon us, I have a question that feeds into the questions on this board. How many players in the NBA draft this year who are playing overseas were recruited for college at all? I see some prospects who are born in 1998 and as old as 1995. Does this mean there is untapped potential out there?

rich maier5/18/2017 2:30:15 PM

LSF, how many 'bottom feeders' did Lonergan sign while at GW?

hondo6/8/2017 1:30:24 AM

Man with all the acrimony you would hardly know GW signed Javier
